WOR (2008, Banjong Sinthanamongkolgul, A+)

This is my comment in Filmsick’s blog:
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20080723/entry-1

This is my comment in Peter Nellhaus’ blog about TSUGUMI (1990, Jun Ichikawa):
http://www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com/archives/2008/07/tsugumi.html#more

“Thank you for writing about the difference between the novel and the film. I didn’t know about it. I have never read Yoshimoto’s novel, but I have seen KITCHEN (1997, Yim Ho, A-) and TSUGUMI (A-). Though I have never read Yoshimoto’s work, I guess some power of her novels may be lost in the films, because both films are not as powerful as it should be. I still love Jun Ichikawa’s films, though, especially DYING AT A HOSPITAL (1993).”

DIFFERENT THINKING IS NO CRIME

I copied the news below from Prachatai’s website:
http://www.prachatai.com/english/news.php?id=721

“Labour woman leader sacked for wearing T-shirt defiant of lèse majesté law

Prachatai
31 July 2008
News

The leader of one of Thailand’s largest textile labour unions has been fired because she wore a campaign T-shirt challenging lèse majesté laws when she appeared on a TV programme.

Jitra Kotchadet, leader of the Triumph International (Thailand) Labor Union, wore a black campaign t-shirt with the slogan ‘Not Standing is No Crime, Different Thinking is No Crime’, while appearing as a guest on the NBT channel’s Krong Satanakarn talk-show programme to discuss the issue of abortion on April 24, 2008. The campaign was in support of Chotisak Onsoong who had been charged with lèse majesté for not standing for the royal anthem in a cinema.

After the broadcast, Jitra’s choice to wear the T-shirt was made a target of criticism by the Manager media group and the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) (see 130 activists and academics condemn Manager media group). She was summoned by her employer for an explanation, and she explained that she was wearing it during the airtime at that night, not working time, and her trade union was a separate legal entity that did not represent the Body Fashion (Thailand) Ltd. She insisted on her right to wear the shirt and support the cause. Her employer went silent. During that time, the trade union was preparing to make demands, which were quite strong, and they even planned to call a strike. However, things went smoothly, with the employer’s partial consent to the demands.

Jitra said that the employer however later lodged a complaint at the Labour Court seeking to dismiss her for deliberately damaging the company’s reputation by wearing the shirt. The company claimed that her support for Chotisak in his lèse majesté case created a public perception that the company also supported Chotisak’s action, hence the court case to clear its name.

Jitra said that on July 29 she was summoned to meet the employer and was told termination of her employment was allowed by the Court as of July 8, but the employer said that they instead chose to inform her on that day and the termination would take effect on the following day, July 30. According to the employer, a summons had been issued for her twice, but she had never seen them. She believed that her dismissal was part of an attempt to abolish the union, using the lèse majesté as a pretext.

As leader of the union, Jitra has always fought the employer for welfare improvements, including shuttle bus services, costs of workers’ uniforms, etc.

Jitra has been working for 16 years, and has been active in the labour movement. At her age and because of her past activities, she doubts she could find employment elsewhere.

POLL 28: SAME KIND OF STRANGE FEELINGS

My poll 28 is inspired by two Thai films and one Thai play that I just saw and like very much. They are THE THING (2008, Fari Tesprateep), PERFECT BALANCE? (2007, Parinya Janpengpen), and WAITING FOR G.D. (2008, Damkerng Thitapiyasak, Thai play). These three things have nothing in common, except that they are stranger than most narrative films or plays. They give me roughly the same kind of strange feelings. So I think I should make a list of my favorite films, plays, and also a novel, that give me that same kind of strange feelings.

I think this list is the strangest Iist I have made, because all of the things in the list cannot be appropriately categorized by using the same adjective. I think the word “strange” is actually too broad to cover all of these things, but I can’t think of any other words. Some of these things are absurd. Some are not. Some of these things are surreal. Some are allegorical. Some contain symbols. Some are about human conditions. I put all of these things into the same list just because I feel that they should be compared to one another. I make this list depending on my feelings. I feel that many of the things in this list share something in common, but I don’t know how to describe it. I just feel it.

THESE GREAT FILMS/THINGS GIVE ME THE SAME KIND OF STRANGE FEELINGS. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.ABSENCE (Peter Handke, novel)
I borrowed this book from the Goethe Institute’s library many years ago. I don’t know if it is available or not.

This is the description of this novel from www.amazon.com :
“German author Handke ( Afternoon of a Writer ) enlarges the recurrent metaphysical preoccupations of his prolific output in this latest challenging and rewarding novel. The story's four nameless protagonists meander through a surreally disconnected and flattened landscape. An old artist, a gambler ignorant of himself, a callow soldier whose self-effacing "absence" is a defense against the world, and a vain woman whose frantic mirror-staring fails to make her present to herself, "roam"--as the novel's epigraph from Chuang Tzusp ok puts it--"in the palace of Nowhere, where all things are one." As they wander across an almost featureless northern plain, the past, present and future become one and the characters' insubstantial identities collapse into one another. But when they detect legible symbols in the surrounding blankness and read them with conviction, the landscape springs into recognizable life and the characters discover their strength. In this smoothly written fable, Handke forcefully summons readers to the recognition that the essence of human life lies in the striving for self-expression even though its perfect realization must always remain elusive.”

2.THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE (2004, James Lee, Malaysia)

3.THE CASTLE (1997, Michael Haneke, Austria)

4.LE COMPLEXE DE THENARDIER (2002, Jean-Michel Ribes, French play)

The recording of this play was shown at Alliance Francaise in Bangkok a few years ago. It is adapted from Josef Pliya’s play.

This is the synopsis:
http://www.nac-cna.ca/en/nacnews/viewnews.cfm?ID=594&cat=catFT

“Outside, the world is destroyed. There was — there is? — a civil war, ethnic cleansing. Inside, life goes on as usual for the lady of the house and her servant girl, Vido, who owes her mistress her safety but is desperate to escape. Between them, words. Never a full-blown confrontation, but a slow accretion of words and phrases that gradually strangle them. Has young Vido been a little less attentive to her household tasks since she met that "blue-haired" soldier? She longs to find her real mother, her real father. She yearns to break free of her abusive bond with this haughty, cruel, endlessly humiliating woman, this "mother" who tells her, like a slap in the face: "I'm using you to reconstruct the gaps in my own childhood."

This is an excerpt from the dialogue in LE COMPLEXE DE THENARDIER:
http://entractes.sacd.fr/en/oeuvre_edite2.php?idoeuvre=265&l=ma

“THE MOTHER: People say such nonsense. Times of peace are hard. Before, during the war, you opened your windows and there were colours everywhere. They would say anything - that things would be better in times of peace, and that the lights would stop going out. And they said that a house cleaner comes cheap and all you have to do is wish for one. So people imagine all kinds of things in the middle of a war. They imagine a maid who does everything and smiles as if she means it. You dream of things being cared for, of lavender and flowers being watered. And even if it isn't true, you dream anyway. […]People say such nonsense. Times of war are easier. In the crux of winter, you open your door to an unknown woman and all your childhood memories come flooding back. Your brothers and sisters shouting in the courtyard, your mother's orders flying with the dust, little hands running like ants. And time. Time to laugh at nothing because it's good to laugh; time to chat about this one and that one, about yourself and the whole world. Time in the kitchen for endless cooking that you drag out even longer because you've got so much time. Time to live. […] People say such nonsense. There are no masters, no slaves. There are ways of living or surviving, and when you can't take any more of war and violence, you search for whatever you can get, and you take what you find. And what you find is childhood, the vast landscape of your childhood. There's the courtyard, the shouting, the voices and the kitchen. And a mother saying "Lemon" and ten little hands rushing to hand her the lemon. "Fountain" and my sisters and I were flooded with drops of water from head to toe. "Dreams" and we could sleep peacefully until noon since those little hands were there for the coffee, the tea, and the chicory. […]People say such nonsense. Times don't change. There is no before and no now. There is no here or elsewhere. There is no gratitude, no consideration or respect. Only one thing remains: self-interest. Anything can be bought, sold and paid for. Anything. There is no humanity. No humanity”

8.THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1972, Luis Bunuel, France)

9.GROB (FRAME) (2001, Nat Rittarom, Thailand)

10.HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY (2004, Lu Chunsheng, China)

The synopsis below is from
http://www.galerie-meile.ch/nav/top/artists/text/default.htm?view_ArtistItem_OID=56

“With its masterly photography and outstanding sound track, History of Chemistry (29'27", 2004) is a b/w and colour video without speech and having a mirror-like structure in which poetry and reality, nature and industry, inner and external worlds are confronted and questioned by a captain with a scanty crew and no ship, the protagonist of the third short movie by Chinese artist Lu Chunsheng (1968). It is a captain who has gone adrift, wrecked on a strange land where he is cast in an adventure that becomes a quest for practical and existential solutions. Circumstances, individual fears and the search for knowledge all impact the different characters and especially the captain, whose sense of responsibility brings him to walk alone and resolutely towards an industrial complex. By realizing and accepting the necessity of a painful decision, he starts his voyage to conquer a new territory of awareness - the inevitability of progress. By means of a hammer, the captain restarts a metaphorical process of civilization and shapes the world according to a rational framework. The voice of the main symbolic elements of the video - water, earth, sky and industry- are thus overwhelmed by the thrilling rhythm of the human will.”

12.PERFECT BALANCE? (2007, Parinya Janpengpen, Thailand)

14.SHATTER ROOM NO. 0 (2008, Teerawat Mulvilai + Jarunun Phantachat, Thai play)

15.SIDA? (2005, Santiphap Inkong-ngam, Thailand)

16.THE THING (2008, Fari Tesprateep, Thailand)
I didn’t understand this film at all. It is very weird. However, Thisisgis wrote about an interpretation of this film in his blog, and I think I agree with him about the interpretation.

Thisisgis wrote about it in Thai here:

18.WELCOME TO NOTHING (2008, Noppan Boonyai, Thai play)

19.WOMAN IN THE DUNES (1964, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Japan)

20.YASUJIRO’S JOURNEY (2004, Faozan Rizal, Indonesia)

Nathan Andersen wrote about this film in Senses of Cinema:
http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/06/38/rizal.html

“The younger man’s journey, as it is portrayed in this impressive and atmospheric debut film, is not so much a literal quest to find an older man but a spiritual quest to find himself in the foreign landscape his ancestor had wandered. The fact he never does find what he is looking for, and is himself never found again, is relevant to a reading of one of the more peculiar scenes in the film, in which the younger Yasujiro meticulously stacks a series of stones into a pillar that fills the height of the screen, then moves away, shows dissatisfaction, knocks it over, and then builds again.”

You can cast multiple votes.

--I wanted to include HALLUCINATION (2002, Sopon Sakdapisit, 16 min, A+++++) in this list, because the film is also about a surreal situation in a toilet, in which many characters can’t seem to agree whether the time is night or day. But I exclude the film from this list because the situation becomes explainable in the end. What we just saw is just a hallucination of someone who took amphetamine.

--DOPPELSTECKER (1986, Richard Blank, West Germany) also gives me the same kind of strange feelings, but I don’t like this film as much as other things in the list.

FILM AND REAL LIFE 8: "I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE" IS A FEEL-GOOD MOVIE COMPARED TO THE REALITY IN THAILAND

I felt very bad after watching the copyrighted vcd of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978, Meir Zarchi, A+). The film is too powerful for me. But I felt much worse after reading the news of Aruni Tongprom. Reality is always worse than fiction, especially in this case.

I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE may make me feel bad to watch the rape and torture scene in the film, but the film still shows that the woman succeeds in her revenge, and there seems to be no police chasing after her. Is this a kind of happy ending? Purely fictional kind of happy ending?

The reality is much worse than that. I just knew from Guru Magazine about the case of Aruni Tongprom and Aswin Wongwitaya. A man attempted to rape Aruni, so she cried for help. Aswin tried to help her by fighting with the rapist, and then Aruni killed the rapist by using her knife.

Then the court of Thailand sentenced Aruni and Aswin to jail.

What does this mean? Does Thai law wants to say that if someone wants to rape and kill us or our daughters, we should do nothing and let them rape and kill us, because if we try to defend ourselves, that means we break the law?

In my own opinion, I think Aruni and Aswin should be freed.

The case of Aruni makes me feel much worse than what happens in I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, because I can live with the fact that there are evil men around us who may want to kill or hurt us, but it’s hard for me to live with the fact that Thai law prefers us to be raped and killed, instead of defending ourselves.

I copied the following piece of news from Bangkok Post’s website:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/100708_News/10Jul2008_news03.php

“A former Thai boxer who intervened to prevent a woman being raped has been jailed, along with the woman he saved, for accidentally killing the attacker.

The incident, on Aug 29, 2005, was viewed by the Criminal Court yesterday as an attempt to bludgeon a person to death.

The judge sentenced former boxer Aswin Wongwitaya, 27, to three years in prison. The woman, Aruni Tongprom, 40, was given two years in jail.

According to the prosecution, Aswin admitted he "lightly kicked" the would-be rapist, identified only as Ya.

The woman admitted she used a knife to slash the attacker's face several times after he collapsed due to a series of blows from Aswin.

"I was frightened after seeing his blood, so Aswin and I fled. I never thought he would die," Aruni told the court.

The judge ruled that Aruni acted out of anger and also fined her 100 baht for carrying a weapon in public without a valid reason.

All the punishments were halved because the two confessed to the killing.

Aruni was a vendor of Buddhist amulets at Sanam Luang.

On the day of the incident she was asleep at her stall and was woken by Ya, a scavenger, who was drunk and tried to rape her, the court was told.

Aruni managed to escape and ran for help. Aswin responded to her call.

Aswin approached Ya and kicked him several times in Muay Thai style.

Aswin later told police that he had been a boxer before he became a street vendor.

The officers found Aswin had earlier been jailed for three years for throwing an imitation grenade at Bangkok Metropolitan Administration inspectors, or thetsakit, behind the Criminal Court.

"THE GREEN RAY" IS THE WINNER

My poll 27 ended with 6 votes. Thanks very much to everyone who participated in it. Here is the result:

“THESE FILMS/THINGS MAKE ME THINK OR RE-THINK ABOUT THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.THE GREEN RAY (1986, Eric Rohmer, France)

It got 3 votes, or 50 %.

2. FIELD OF DREAMS (1989, Phil Alden Robinson, USA)
+FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND (2007, Chaiwat Wiansantai, Thailand)
+I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T GOT (Sinead O’Connor, song lyrics)
+THE LAST TIME I COMMITTED SUICIDE (1997, Stephen T. Kay, USA)
+MISS FIRECRACKER (1989, Thomas Schlamme, USA)
+THE RAPTURE (1991, Michael Tolkin, USA)
+SHE IS READING NEWSPAPER (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Thailand)
+SOLITUDE (Alexander Pope, poem)
+VALERIE FLAKE (1999, John Putch, USA)

Each of these films/things got 2 votes, or 33 %.

11.BEYOND… (2008, Kamin Lertchaiprasert, Thai paintings)
+BIRCHES (Robert Frost, poem)
+FOR SALE (1998, Laetitia Masson, France)
+GILLES’ WIFE (2004, Frederic Fonteyne, Belgium)
+THE LEFT-HANDED WOMAN (1978, Peter Handke, West Germany)
+NEW YEAR AGAIN (2008, Winai Kitcharoen, Thailand)
+SHIRLEY VALENTINE (1989, Lewis Gilbert, UK)
+SUPPOSE THAT HE LOVE ME (1976, Krissana Asokesin, Thai novel)
+TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA (2008, Natchanon Jitweerapat + Issara Kollum, Thailand)+WHERE’S THE HAPPINESS (2007, Janejira Thanasinlapakul, Thailand)”

Each of these films/things got 1 vote, or 16 %.

--I’m very glad that THE GREEN RAY got the most votes, because this is one of my most favorite films of all time. However, I didn’t vote for this film, because in terms of “searching for happiness”, I’m not sure if the ending of this film corresponds to my idea of happiness.

I love the ending of this film very much. It makes me feel very great. I felt like crying in delight, like the protagonist of THE GREEN RAY, when I was watching the ending of this film. But I’m not sure why. I don’t understand why the ending of THE GREEN RAY can overwhelm me like that. Is it because at that moment Delphine has understood herself? Is it because at that moment Delphine has understood her heart? Is it because she can be at peace with herself? I’m not sure. But two things in that scene don’t correspond to my idea of happiness—the cute man and the green ray. According to my idea of happiness, Delphine should be happy, though she doesn’t find the green ray nor the cute man. Happiness shouldn’t depend on being loved by other people nor depend on some unnecessary things. But maybe the cute man and the green ray are not important in that scene. Maybe Delphine is happy because of other reasons, not because of these two things though they are present in the scene. I’m not sure about this thing.

Now I think I should buy a book in Kinokuniya Book Center in Siam Paragon. I notice that there’s a book called CLOSE UP 02, with an article on three films by Eric Rohmer—A GOOD MARRIAGE (1982), THE GREEN RAY, and AUTUMN TALE (1998). The article is written by Jacob Leigh. Maybe his article may make me understand why THE GREEN RAY has such a profound effect on me.
http://www.wallflowerpress.co.uk/publications/closeup/close-up02.html

--The ending of VALERIE FLAKE corresponds to my idea of happiness. Valerie Flake finds a cute guy. They love each other. But he wants to have a child, while she doesn’t want it. So she leaves him and begins her journey again. I love this kind of happiness—being independent and not needing love from other people.

--I love the poem SOLITUDE very much, though I regret I can’t do what the poem says at this moment—“thus, let me live, unseen, unknown”. If I want to do that, I should stop writing this blog. Maybe in the future. :-)

--A Thai short film called DAA (SCORN) (2008, Maythus Sirinawin, A+) also reminds me of a way to be happy. In this film, some people are scoffed very badly, but they seem to be happy, no matter how bad other people talk about them. This film reminds me that to be hated is not always the cause of being unhappy. You can be hated, and still be happy, if you don’t care about those people who hate you.

I just knew from Thisisgis’ blog that Maythus Sirinawin has posted some of his short films in Youtube. Unfortunately, he doesn’t post DAA in Youtube.

You can watch Maythus Sirinawin’s short films in the following link (I think they don’t have English subtitles):

STILL (2008, Wisarut Deelorm, A++++++++++)

I love the first part of this film very much. The slowness and nocturnal atmosphere in this part unintentionally reminds me of my life more than 10 years ago. At that time, I could still have time to enjoy watching the beautiful darkness in the middle of the night. At that time, I liked waking up during the night, lying on my bed, staring into the darkness for a long time, and felt very very happy. I don’t have time to do something like that any more. Big thanks to the filmmaker of this film who allow me to enjoy tremendously some kind of moments I have been missing for a long time.

3.1 THE TRUTH AND THE LIGHT (2000, Rob Kennedy, A+)

Description of this film from
http://www.transmediale.de/01/en/pres_emare.htm

“The two dimensional limits of the video screen are utilised to re-frame an un-extraordinary occurence. In the flatness of the video image light, colour and time abstract the landscape to create other orders”

คุณ Dechito เขียนถึง SEX AND THE CITY เอาไว้ด้วยค่ะ อ่านได้ที่นี่

ISABELLE ADJANI VS. FARIDA JIRAPAN

FAVORITE MUSICAL ARTIST

The Emperor Machine
http://www.myspace.com/emperormachine

The Emperor Machine makes psychedelic electronica music.

--------------------

I just went to see a Thai play called WAITING FOR G.D. (2008, Damkerng Thitapiyasak, A+++++), which is adapted from WAITING FOR GODOT. I was stunned by the performance of Farida Jirapan in one scene. Farida’s performance in that scene can be compared to the performance of Isabelle Adjani in the metro scene in POSSESSION (1981, Andrzej Zulawski, A+) in its intensity and uncontrollable, untamable power.

POLL 27: SEARCHING FOR HAPPINESS

My poll 27 is inspired by two new Thai short films I love – FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND (GLIN SAI LOM) (2007, Chaiwat Wiansantai) and TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA (2008, Natchanon Jitweerapat + Issara Kollum). There are many things I like about these two entirely different films, and one thing I like about them is that they make me think about my own happiness and how to search for it.

What I like the most in FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND is that I think it shares the same wavelength with me. At first this film looks like a very simple experimental, or non-narrative film to me. It opens with a black-and-white shot of a city street in rewinding mode. We see cars moving backward and we hear some cliché songs of the Beatles, such as YESTERDAY. Then we see rural scenes in color. We see the clear beautiful sky. We see leaves swaying in the wind. We see some rural people and their activities. After a while, we move back to the city and the color images fade into black-and-white.

There seems to be nothing new in this film. Nothing exciting. No new idea. But I just felt so great watching it. The film seems to let me feel the warm sunlight, breathe the fresh air, feel the wind blow, and all of that lead to a peace of mind. I don’t know how Chaiwat Wiansantai shot the images in this film. The rural images in this film have nothing special about it, but they are just right, just appropriate for me. They are not too beautiful, not as beautiful as postcard images. They are a bit more realistic than postcard images, but not as starkly realistic as in documentary films. The purpose of these images may be to convey the atmosphere, not the messages. And they truly succeed in conveying the pleasant rural atmosphere to me, who spend 99 % of my life in Bangkok. Some images in this film look like images in other Thai short films, but when I see the nearly similar images in other Thai short films, I feel bored. I don’t know why nearly similar images can cause such different feelings in me. So I guess it must be the wavelength. Chaiwat Wiansantai can make his rural scenes truly connect with me (who knows nothing about rural areas), while other Thai filmmakers cannot do it.

Since FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND doesn’t seem to tell a story and doesn’t show us a character, the film inspires me to imagine some stories or some characters by myself. Watching FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND inspires me to imagine a character a little bit similar to the one in YELLA (2007, Christian Petzold, Germany, A+++++). It makes me think about a rural boy who can’t live in his rural hometown for whatever reason. He must go to work in a city. He is sometimes happy, sometimes unhappy with the life in the city. When he feels unhappy with the life in the city, he yearns for the warm shadow of the trees in his rural hometown. But he is not truly happy in his hometown, either. Thus, he doesn’t want to settle in his hometown. Both the city and his hometown make him happy and unhappy in different ways, so he doesn’t want to stay in only one of them forever. He wants to alternately stay in both of them. His soul is torn. He is physically living, but his mind is sometimes restless and becomes a wandering ghost, like Yella.

FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND also makes me think about my own kinds of happiness. To see the beautiful sky, to see trees swaying in the wind, to see clouds passing by, like in this film, is one kind of my happiness. I also enjoy going upcountry from time to time, like the unseen traveler in this film. And sometimes when I feel bad about some troubles in the present time, I try to make myself happy again by thinking about the good old days, especially thinking about my high school friends. Thus, I like the use of the song YESTERDAY in this film, though I’m not a fan of the Beatles at all. Many elements in FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND can connect to my way of finding temporary happiness.

But does one NEED to travel upcountry to breathe the fresh air to find TRUE happiness? The protagonist in the first story in TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA doesn’t think so, and I have to agree with him. The first story in TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA corresponds to my own thinking that, in order to find a peace of mind, I don’t need to go anywhere at all. I don’t need to go upcountry, go to a forest, or go to a beautiful park. I can have a real peace of mind just by sitting in my own room and clearing my thought. To be truly happy, to find heaven in one’s own heart, I just don’t have to go anywhere. I only have to control my mind, like the character in TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA. Where we live is not the real cause of heaven. Heaven must be caused by our minds, no matter where we stay. We can have a real peace of mind, if we have just a little room of our own, though we stay in an ugly crowded city like Bangkok.

What is great about TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA is that the film doesn’t preach us or tell us the message in a straightforward, boring way. The film is very funny, and it also shows us how we can go wrong if we do anything in an extreme way, not in the middle way. The character in TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA can control his mind and be truly happy in his own room, but it seems he becomes too attached to that state of heavenly, calm mind. He is so attached to that calm state that he cannot bring himself to work or earn his living any more. That’s a good warning from this film, I think. One must try to control his mind, so that one can be happy, but one must not get so attached to one’s happy mind that one forgets or can’t accept other facts in life.

Inspired by these two Thai films, I think I should make a list of films or things which make me think or re-think about my own kind of happiness or the search for happiness. I think most films are about its characters’ searching for happiness in one way or another. But there are only some films which resonate with my own thinking in this issue.

THESE FILMS/THINGS MAKE ME THINK OR RE-THINK ABOUT THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.BEYOND… (2008, Kamin Lertchaiprasert, Thai paintings)

Each painting in this exhibition has two sides. Some of the paintings remind me that my suffering may be caused by the fact that I want too many things in my life. If I just don’t want them any more, I will not suffer unnecessarily like this.

2.BIRCHES (Robert Frost, poem)

FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND reminds me of this poem. It is about someone who needs to escape from his present problem for a while.

3.FIELD OF DREAMS (1989, Phil Alden Robinson, USA)

4.FOR SALE (1998, Laetitia Masson, France)

5.FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND (2007, Chaiwat Wiansantai, Thailand)

6.GILLES’ WIFE (2004, Frederic Fonteyne, Belgium)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AS2QVA8BL._SS500_.jpg

The wife in this film thinks that if her husband stops having an affair, she will be truly happy. But is her thinking right? Is being loved by a husband a true happiness?

7.THE GREEN RAY (1986, Eric Rohmer, France)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091830/

8.I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN’T GOT (Sinead O’Connor, song lyrics)

9.THE LAST TIME I COMMITTED SUICIDE (1997, Stephen T. Kay, USA)

10.THE LEFT-HANDED WOMAN (1978, Peter Handke, West Germany)

11.MISS FIRECRACKER (1989, Thomas Schlamme, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097892/

12.NEW YEAR AGAIN (2008, Winai Kitcharoen, Thailand)

FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND also reminds me of this short film. It is about a woman who seems to suffer from working, and can be happy temporarily only during holidays.

13.THE RAPTURE (1991, Michael Tolkin, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102757/

14.SHE IS READING NEWSPAPER (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Thailand)

The characters in this film are happy just by watching other people. I also feel like that when I watch handsome foreigners in the streets.

15.SHIRLEY VALENTINE (1989, Lewis Gilbert, UK)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098319/

16.SOLITUDE (Alexander Pope, poem)

17.SUPPOSE THAT HE LOVE ME (1976, Krissana Asokesin, Thai novel)

18.TWO STORIES ABOUT DHAMMA (2008, Natchanon Jitweerapat + Issara Kollum, Thailand)

19.VALERIE FLAKE (1999, John Putch, USA)

20.WHERE’S THE HAPPINESS (2007, Janejira Thanasinlapakul, Thailand)

You can cast multiple votes.

--This is BIRCHES:

“When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morning
After a rain. They click upon themselves
As the breeze rises, and turn many-colored
As the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust--
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
(Now am I free to be poetical?)
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows--
Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,
Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father's trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,
And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree away
Clear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup
Up to the brim, and even above the brim.
Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,
Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It's when I'm weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig's having lashed across it open.
I'd like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth's the right place for love:
I don't know where it's likely to go better.
I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

--This is SOLITUDE:

Happy the man, whose wish and care
A few paternal acres bound,
Content to breathe his native air
In his own ground.

Whose herds with milk, whose fields with bread,
Whose flocks supply him with attire;
Whose trees in summer yield shade,
In winter, fire.

Blest, who can unconcern'dly find
Hours, days, and years, slide soft away
In health of body, peace of mind,
Quiet by day.

Sound sleep by night; study and ease
Together mixed; sweet recreation,
And innocence, which most does please
With meditation.

Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

+THE OPPOSITE OF SEX (1998, Don Roos, USA)

+A PLACE AMONG THE LIVING (2003, Raoul Ruiz, France)
+THE POSITIVELY TRUE ADVENTURES OF THE ALLEGED TEXAS CHEERLEADER-MURDERING MOM (1993, Michael Ritchie, USA)

Each of them got 0 vote.

--I’m very surprised that HAUNTED HOUSES got the most votes, because this film is hard to see. But I’m glad that it got the most votes, because I like it very much. I particularly like the scene when a character treats a very cheap vehicle as if it is a very expensive vehicle. I also like the idea of this film very much. Apichatpong can tell a very entertaining story without using realistic acting and realistic sets at all.

Filmsick wrote about the obsession of poor Thai people in TV series about the bourgeoisie in HAUNTED HOUSES in Thai here:
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20071224/entry

Brian Darr wrote about other films by Apichatpong here:
http://hellonfriscobay.blogspot.com/2008/07/apichatpong-weerasethakul-connections.html

--Gloria Withalm wrote an interesting article about self-reflexive films here:
http://www.uni-ak.ac.at/culture/withalm/wit-texts/wit00-porto.html

Her article makes Mel Brooks’ films look more interesting than before. Her article also mentions the TV series MOONLIGHTING. It was shown on a Thai television (Channel 11) when I was in high school, but at that time I was not interested in this TV series. I regret it now.

--There is a scene that I like very much in a cult film called TONGAN NINJA (2002, Jason Stutter, New Zealand, B+). It’s a fighting scene in which a mike boom appears on top of the screen. When the mike boom appears, the film stops portraying only a fictional world and seems to announce to the viewers, “You are watching a film.” The appearance of the mike boom may seem to imply that the filmmaker of TONGAN NINJA was so careless that he let this kind of thing happen during the shooting. But he wasn’t careless. After the mike boom has appeared for a while, the protagonist gets very annoyed with it and suddenly snatches the mike boom from the film crew and uses the mike boom as a weapon to fight the villains.

KUNG FU PANDA (2008, Mark Osborne + John Stevenson, A)

This is my comment in Oliver’s blog:
http://riverdale-dreams.blogspot.com/2008/07/kung-fu-panda.html

LITTLE MONK'S FRIEND (2008, Tongchat Gawil, A++++++++++)

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN BIOSCOPE WEBBOARD:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=71.1410

http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/02/22/wanda.html

THAI SHORT FILMS SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME ON 12-13 JULY 2008

One thing I learned from these short films is that some films don’t reflect the real talent of the filmmakers at all. This is the case when some talented filmmakers have to make films to satisfy some professors, and the filmmakers have to conform to some rules or to make films about things in which the filmmakers are not interested at all.

Most of the English titles listed here are unofficial English titles.

BATMAN BEGINS VS. IRON MAN

This is my comment in Initial A’s blog:
http://initiala0099.exteen.com/20080703/entry

1.Thea Djordjadze
