I think this film should be screened together with AND THEN (1985, Yoshimitsu Morita, A+), which is adapted from a novel by Natsume Soseki, because both films deal with characters who try very hard not to express their real feelings.
MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON may also be screened together with LA MODIFICATION (1970, Michel Worms, A+), which is adapted from a novel by Michel Butor, because what happens in LA MODIFICATION may unintentionally help clarifying the decision of the hero at the end of MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON.
If I remember it correctly, LA MODIFICATION is about a man who imagines what would happen if he commits adultery.
MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON reminds me of Sandra Oh and Aaron Eckhart in RABBIT HOLE, too, because Aaron Eckhart also hesitates about committing adultery.
I like it very much that MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON doesn't cheat about the feelings of "the wife". It is the opposite of such films as HEARTBREAKER (2010, Pascal Chaumeil, B+) and JUST GO WITH IT (2011, Dennis Dugan, A+/A), which cheat the audience about the feelings of the ditched lovers.
I just noticed that MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON, AND THEN, and LA MODIFICATION all have memorable train scenes in them. The train scene in AND THEN is very surreal, while the story of LA MODIFICATION is about the imagination of a man while travelling on a train.
