--Berenice Reynaud wrote about WANDA here:

--It may not be directly related, but this poll makes me think about other kinds of artists who create works by using their own images in a fictional way, especially Cindy Sherman. It also makes me think about the film CINDY: THE DOLL IS MINE (2005, Bertrand Bonello) and the conflicting roles of the artist who is both the creator and a part of the created work.

These artists may include:

1.Cindy Sherman

2.Katharina Sieverding
http://www.db-artmag.de/2004/7/e/3/277.php

3.Yasumasa Morimura

5.Chanon Charnphanao

6.Nawin Rawanchaikul

Most of these artists make photographs or paintings which contain their own fictional faces. Nawin Rawanchaikul also made a sculpture of himself.

WE'RE ALL ALONE UNDER THE BLANKET

This is my comment in Bioscope webboard:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=1167.0

I just saw UNDER THE BLANKET (2008, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, A+++++). As for now, I can only say that it is unclassifiable or indescribable for me. The more I try to write about it, the more I feel I unfairly “reduce” the film or the images in the film. UNDER THE BLANKET may not arouse my feelings as strongly as his previous films, but it is still as unforgettable as his previous films. Many scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET have a quality that I like very much. They make me feel free or liberated while watching them. That is not what I feel when I watch most films. Many scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET are not enslaved by storytelling, messages, meanings, or obvious connection to the previous or the next scenes. I mean these scenes may actually tell a story, send a message, carry some meanings or symbols, and have connection to other scenes, but they are not as enslaved by these things as scenes in other films. That’s why I feel free or liberated while I watch most scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET.

It may be totally unrelated, but I want to note that after I saw UNDER THE BLANKET on Friday, I went home to sleep and had a dream that I listened to the song WE’RE ALL ALONE and felt very sad. After I woke up, I cried a lot because of the mysterious sadness lingering from the dream. This song is not in the film, but I wonder if UNDER THE BLANKET had some mysterious effect on my subconscious or not. Is my dream unintentionally caused by some feelings I had while I was watching this film? Maybe not.

This is the video clip of Rita Coolidge singing WE’RE ALL ALONE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGC29fn8JFU

This is the lyrics:

Outside the rain begins and it may never end
So cry no more on the shore
A dream will take us out to sea
Forever more forever more

Close your eyes and dream
And and you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone
We're all alone

Close the window
Calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin
Learn how to pretend

Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do
Lovers too
So cast your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear
Oh, hold me dear

Close the window
Calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin

All's forgotten now
We're all alone
oh-oh, we're all alone

--------------------------------------

The post below is inspired by Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/06/received-ideas-in-cinema.html

Reading Girish’s blog about critical shorthand makes me think about description of some directors. I like how Jean-Luc Godard described some directors very much. Sometimes I don’t understand what he described. Sometimes I don’t agree with what he described. But most of the times I think his descriptions are very memorable or powerful.

I would like to copy some of Godard’s descriptions from the book GODARD ON GODARD, translated and edited by Tom Milne. But instead of copying them directly, I think it would be funnier if I separate the descriptions from the names of the directors. So that my readers who have too much free time may enjoy trying to match them.

Can you match the following Godard’s descriptions with the directors he described?

GODARD’S DESCRIPTIONS

1.An alert (name) is worth two Billy Wilders. …With (name) there is no starting point, and this is precisely his originality. Only the point of arrival matters, a scene at the very limits of absurdity in the ferociously eccentric world of the PAM, PAM, POUM of our childhood.

2.He comes on stage and introduces himself: author, composer, actor, designer, producer, director, scholar, financier, gourmet, ventriloquist, poet.

3.Even as he threw all the great human values to the wolves, he became one of the new great of Hollywood; and even as he replaced Wyler and Zinnemann in the hearts of the exhibitors, he established himself as a worthy heir to Lubitsch in the hearts of cinephiles,…

4.For it is here that his power and talents lie. He seeks the bizarre at all costs, because the bizarre is a convention and behind this convention one must, also at all costs, discover a basic truth. He seeks the madness behind reality because it is for him the only way to rediscover the true face of reality behind this madness. This is why with each close-up one has the feeling that the camera wipes these faces,…

5.The great traditional cinema means (the name of the director) as opposed to Fellini or Rossellini. It is a way of selecting certain scenes rather than others.

6.He is beyond praise because he is the greatest of all. What else can one say? The only film-maker, anyway, to whom one can apply without misunderstanding that very misleading adjective, ‘humane’.

7.He is the second greatest editor in the world after Eisenstein. Editing, to them, means organizing cinematographically; in other words planning dramatically, composing musically, or in yet other words, the finest, film-making.

8.He will also shoot a scene just because at that moment a window is opening in a house away in the background, and a window opening—well, that’s funny. This is what interests him. Everything and nothing. Blades of grass, a kite, children, a little old man, anything, everything which is at once real, bizarre and charming. He has a feeling for comedy because he has a feeling for strangeness.

9.In other words, in all his films and (name of a film) in particular, he tirelessly demonstrates that in order to create cinema we must rediscover Melies, and that quite a few light years are still necessary for this.

10.It is difficult to analyse his comedy style. Pushed in one direction, it would end up as Jacques Tati. Pushed in the other, as Marx Brothers. But as he, one of the laziest of good French directors, never pushes things to their conclusion, one often finds oneself between two stools.

11.I will simply say that, thanks to Henri Langlois, we now know—to choose at random – that ceilings do not date from CITIZEN KANE but from Griffith (of course) and Gance; cinema-verite not from Rouch but (the name of the director);

12.The most subtle film theoretician in France. He hates paradoxes, but creates them. He hates false arguments, but offers them. He hates the cinema, but loves it. He doesn’t like good films, but makes them.

13.His originality lies in having made characters out of his actors – who are actors in the simplest sense of term, moreover, being filmed in action, while he contents himself with filming this action after having, as far as possible, organized it logically in the manner of Rossellini.

14.…proves that he need not abandon the cinema provided he films characters who exist instead of ideas which exist only in the bottom drawers of old scriptwriters who believe that the cinema is the seventh art.

15.Subtlety of mise en scene is here carried to its highest degree. He is probably the only director in the world who dares to make a systematic use of 180 degree shots and reaction shots. But what in another director would be striving for effect, with him is simply a natural movement arising out of the importance he accords to the décor and the position the actors occupy within it.

16.There are several good ways of making French films. Italian style, like Renoir. Viennese, like Ophuls. New Yorker, like Melville. But only (his name) was and is French as France, French as Fontenelle’s rose and Bonnot’s gang.

17.There are several ways of making films. Like Jean Renoir and Robert Bresson, who make music. Like Sergei Eisenstein, who paints. Like (the name of the director), who wrote sound novels in silent days. Like Alain Resnais, who sculpts. And like Socrates, Rossellini I mean, who creates philosophy.

18.There was theatre (Griffith), poetry (Murnau), painting (Rossellini), dance (Eisenstein), music (Renoir). Henceforth there is cinema. And the cinema is (his name).

19.This is why his cinema of non-communication isn’t mine. Rossellini told me that I almost fell into the (his name) error, but just escaped.

20.Thus deprived of consciousness, his camera loses, despite its honesty, the two fundamental qualities of a camera: intelligence and sensitivity.

THE “FAMILY” IS THE SMALLEST CELL OF FASCIST STRUCTURES

I just read an interview with Christian Petzold in the website of Cineaste Magazine. This is a quote from the website:
http://www.cineaste.com/articles/an-interview-with-christian-petzold.htm

“My generation was taught by all these leftist teachers whose consciousness was shaped by the events of 1968. At that time the family was seen to be the smallest cell of the state, of fascist structures, that is, as the biggest piece of shit imaginable. It was the site where discipline and training was implemented. In this context Deleuze's essay on control societies impressed me immensely when I began making films in the mid-90s, just before Deleuze's death. Deleuze argues that the extrafamiliar institutions that cropped up everywhere, those hedonistic communities, the patchwork families, the communes, and the shared apartment-living situations, which were established in direct opposition to the traditional father-mother-child neurosis—that these new forms, which were and are perceived as libratory, actually embody the modern control society, that is, are modern forms of oppression that suddenly exert their force upon people.”

I knew about Cineaste’s website from Girish’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/06/links.html

What Petzold said reminds me of some of my most favorite films last year – CRY IN SILENCE (2006, J. G. Biggs) and MON FILS A MOI (2006, Martial Fougeron) – which deal with tyrannical parents. If I can choose a father, I would choose the father of Juno in JUNO (2007, Jason Reitman, A+). He is a flawed human being, but I think he would cause the least problem in my life. Apart from Juno’s father, I also like the father in THE SUM OF US (1994, Kevin Dowling + Geoff Burton, A-/B+) very much.

CUTE ACTOR: RICH CERAULO

He has a supporting role in DEATH SENTENCE (2007, James Wan, B-). I like that this film talks about gang’s random killing, which seems to be a serious social problem, but I can’t enjoy this film. I think it is not very exciting or suspenseful, except for the first 20 minutes. I think I would like this film more if it tried to be a little bit more realistic as EYE FOR AN EYE (1996, John Schlesinger, B+/B) or tried to be as stylish as THE PUNISHER (2004, Jonathan Hensleigh, A) or as THE PUNISHER (1989, Mark Goldblatt, A).

http://hellonfriscobay.blogspot.com/2008/06/jewish-film-festival-lineup-announced.html

Judging from the names of the directors alone, I highly recommend these three films:

1.A HEBREW LESSON (2006, David Ofek, Israel, 123 min)

2.LOVE COMES LATELY (2007, Jan Schuette, Germany)

3.I ONLY WANTED TO LIVE (2006, Mimmo Calopresti, Italy, 78 min)

I haven’t seen any films by Calopresti, but I have heard that he’s good. David Ofek co-directed THE BARBECUE PEOPLE (2003), which is very touching and has a very interesting storytelling structure. Jan Schuette directed THE FAREWELL – BERTOLT BRECHT’S LAST SUMMER (2000), which is great.

RATCHAPIN

I learned about this news from Wise Kwai’s blog:
http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/2008/06/thai-woman-arrested-for-refusing-to.html

I copied the news from:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080617/wl_asia_afp/thailandroyalscrime_080617052405

“A Thai woman arrested for refusing to stand as the royal anthem played in a Bangkok cinema faces up to 15 years in prison, police said Tuesday.

Ratchapin Chancharoen, 28, was arrested Sunday evening and charged with insulting Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej by not standing during the anthem, which plays to a montage of royal portraits before the screening of every film.

Ratchapin had gone to the theatre to watch "The Other Boleyn Girl," a story about England's King Henry VIII.

Other theatre-goers became angry when she refused to stand, and Ratchapin began shouting "impolite words" as a group confronted her, police said.

Ratchapin was allowed to watch the movie before police took her away.

Major Charoen Srisalak, deputy chief investigator of the Bangkok police, said the suspect refused to answer any questions during interrogation.

"She said only that she did what she wanted to do. Police charged her with insulting the monarchy," he said.

If convicted, Ratchapin faces from three to 15 years in prison.

In April, a Thai man was also charged with lese majeste, or offending the monarchy, for refusing to stand for the anthem in a cinema. Thailand plays the anthem before any public performance.

King Bhumibol, 80, is the world's longest-reigning monarch and commands an almost religious devotion from his subjects.

Thailand's strict enforcement of its lese majeste law prevents any public discussion about the palace.

A cabinet minister was forced to resign last month after he was accused of offending the king in a speech about the 2006 coup by royalist generals who ousted then-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

In April 2007, a Swiss man was sentenced to 10 years in prison -- but later pardoned by the monarch -- for defacing the king's portrait.

The same month, the army-backed government temporarily blocked the popular video-sharing website YouTube after clips mocking the king appeared.”

This is my comment in Pilgrim Akimbo’s blog:
http://pilgrimakimbo.blogspot.com/

I voted for LA CHINOISE because I love it, and I think the film is very dense. I have watched it three times, but I think I understand only 5 % of what was going on in the film, so I think observing its creation may help me understand more. However, I think I don’t have the courage to talk to Jean-Luc Godard and Tarkovsky even if I have a chance to talk to them. I love their films, but I’m afraid that I may reveal my stupidity when I’m talking. I guess Herzog and Wenders are pleasant to talk to.

POLL 24: STARRING THE DIRECTORS

My poll 24 is inspired by 17 MAY MY VALETINE (2008, Sawanee Uthumma), which is one of my most favorite stage plays of this year, and ACTRESSES (2007, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), which is one of my most favorite films of this year. These two things have one thing in common: each of them stars its own director. So I think I should make a list of my favorite films about this. I also include the stage play 17 MAY MY VALENTINE in this poll because it is the inspiration for this poll.

EACH OF THESE GREAT FILMS/PLAY STARS ITS OWN DIRECTOR. WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE?

1.ACTRESSES (2007, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, France)

2.THE ALL-ROUND REDUCED PERSONALITY – REDUPERS (1977, Helke Sander, West Germany)

3.THE CRYING WOMAN (1979, Jacques Doillon, France)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077542/

4.IN MY SKIN (2002, Marina de Van, France)

5.JACKY (2000, Hu Fow-pyng + Brad Ljatifi, Netherlands)

6.JE TU IL ELLE (1974, Chantal Akerman, Belgium)

7.KATZELMACHER (1969, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany)
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20050909/katzelmacher-fs

8.THE LAST HOLE (1981, Herbert Achternbusch, West Germany)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082651/

9.THE LINE, THE CROSS, AND THE CURVE (1994, Kate Bush, UK)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107421/

10.MAN BITES DOG (1992, Remy Belvaux + Andre Bonzel + Benoit Poelvoorde, Belgium)

11.ME AND YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW (2005, Miranda July, USA)

12.THE NINE-DAY PREGNANCY OF A SINGLE, MIDDLE-AGED ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (2006, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Thailand)

13.OBSERVATION OF THE MONUMENT (2008, Michael Shaowanasai, Thailand)

14.OUR PEOPLE (2000, Montri Toemsombat + Jacques Charrier, Thailand)

15.DEEP INSIDE (PLEUG) (2002, Chumpol Thongthab, aka Tanwarin Sukhapisit, Thailand)

16.SCHIZOPOLIS (1996, Steven Soderbergh, USA)

17.17 MAY MY VALENTINE (2008, Sawanee Uthumma, Thai play)
Frankenstein wrote about this play in Thai here:
http://lighthouse.exteen.com/20080617/entry

18.TEMPTING HEART (1999, Sylvia Chang, Hong Kong)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215240/

19.WANDA (1970, Barbara Loden, USA)

20.A WANDERING BRIDE (2007, Ana Katz, Argentina)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0813630/

You can cast multiple vote.

--SCHIZOPOLIS is also in another poll by Pilgrim Akimbo, though I vote for LA CHINOISE in that poll.
http://pilgrimakimbo.blogspot.com/2008/06/non-obligatoryofficial-poll-for-anyone.html

--I think the directors of the films above made the right decision to cast himself/herself in the film, because most of them are irreplaceable as an actors/actresses, especially Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Marina de Van, and Michael Shaowanasai.

--Jill Forbes wrote about THE CRYING WOMAN (LA FEMME QUI PLEURE) in the book THE CINEMA IN FRANCE AFTER THE NEW WAVE. Here is a quote from the book:

“LA FEMME QUI PLEURE, which inaugurated Doillon’s tragic manner, is a banal tale of a triangular relationship. Jacques is married to Dominique but falls in love with Haydee. Dominique cannot come to terms with this betrayal. This is the stuff of innumerable fictions, many of them moral fables or farces. Doillon’s treatment of the theme, however, is remarkable for its lack of complicity with any of the characters and, indeed, for its lack of moral dimension. As the title of the film clearly indicates, it is Dominique who is the subject of this study, but Dominique in her physical as much as in her emotional existence. Doillon is interested in the bodily effects of emotions such as jealousy on an individual. Thus the film is composed as a series of scenes of remarkable intensity, linked by dissolves, which provide the viewer with welcome respite, during most of which Dominique cries or otherwise behaves in a hysterical manner, whilst both the performances and the editing of the film remove narrative progression and substitute immediacy of experience.”

THE MAIDEN AND THE WOLVES (2007, Gilles Legrand, A+/A)

MATT + BLACK FOREST

MAN OF LA MANCHA (2008, Euthana Mukdasanit, A+)

FILMS I HAVE SEEN SO FAR IN THE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL

1.ACTRESSES (2007, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, A+++++++++++++++)

I have never seen any films like this in my entire life.

2.THE FEELINGS FACTORY (2008, Jean-Marc Moutout, A++++++++++)

The protagonist of this film is like Carrie, Miranda, and Samantha from SEX AND THE CITY rolled into one. She is searching for love like Carrie, is a lawyer like Miranda, and has serious illness like Samantha.

3.WATER LILIES (2007, Celine Sciamma, A+++++)

Adele Haenel is certainly one of the best actresses. She gave a powerful, unforgettable performance in THE DEVILS (2002, Christoph Ruggia, A+++++), and now she did it again in WATER LILIES.

4.LET’S DANCE! (2007, Noemie Lvovsky, A+++)

This film unintentionally reminds me of some Buddhist teachings—being born, getting old, being ill, dying. But the film presents all these things in a very joyful manner.

5.THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (2007, Julian Schnabel, A+)

I like the first part of the film very much when we see the world through the eye(s) of the protagonist.

6.THE MAIDEN AND THE WOLVES (2008, Gilles Legrand, A+/A)

I’m not sure if this is a good film or not, but this film corresponds to my romantic fantasy, so I like it.

7.FEMALE AGENTS (2008, Jean-Paul Salome, A+/A)

This is not a good film, but I always like films about cruel women like this. The character played by Deborah Francois is very morally complicated. I wish this character was in a film by a better director.

8.COULD THIS BE LOVE? (2007, Pierre Jolivet, A)

This film makes me feel more interested in ceramics.

I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE JUNO'S STEPMOTHER

(THE LAST MOMENT) (2008, Yuthlert Sippapak, B+)

-------------------------------------

This is the week of the French Film Festival, the Italian Film Festival, Man of La Mancha musical, and my sore throat. All these factors have kept me from going to internet café for the past 5 days. Since the two film festivals are still going on, that means I still don’t have much time for internet now. I’m sorry for writing very little.

-------------------------------

My poll 23 ended with six votes, including one vote from me for BU SU, DEK JOE, HI TERESKA, and MIDNIGHT RAINBOW. Thank you very much for everyone who participated in it. Here is the result.

I LOVE THESE FILMS ABOUT YOUNG GIRLS VERY MUCH. WHICH FILMS DO YOU LIKE?

1.BU SU (1987, Jun Ichikawa, Japan)
+DEK JOE (2008, Pakwan Suksomtin, Thailand)
+GETTING MY BROTHER LAID (2001, Sven Taddicken, Germany)
+GINGER SNAPS (2000, John Fawcett, Canada)
+GLASS TEARS (2001, Lai Miu-suet, Hong Kong)
+HI TERESKA (2001, Robert Glinski, Poland)
+I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A SAINT (2003, Genevieve Mersch, Luxembourg)
+LIME (2001, Nathilde Overrein Rapp, Norway)
+MIDNIGHT RAINBOW (2008, Patta Tongpan, Thailand)
+MOUCHETTE (1967, Robert Bresson, France)
+VANAJA (2006, Rajnesh Domalpalli, India)
+WISH YOU WERE HERE (1987, David Leland, UK)

Each of them got 1 vote, or 16 %.

13.BELLYFRUIT (1999, Kerri Green, USA)
+DOIN’ THE DO (a music video of Betty Boo, UK)
+FOR KEEPS? (1988, John G. Avildsen, USA)
+I, TARENEH, AM FIFTEEN (2002, Rasul Sadrameli, Iran)
+JUNO (2007, Jason Reitman, USA)
+OR (2004, Keren Yedaya, Israel)
+VIOLET PERFUME: NOBODY HEARS YOU (2001, Marisa Sistach, Mexico)
+WINNING LONDON (2001, Craig Shapiro, USA)

Each of them got 0 vote.

When I made this poll, I intend to exclude many of my favorite films about young girls which I already mentioned in my Sense of Cinema’s lists, such as CRY IN SILENCE, LOVELY RITA, ANGEL’S FALL, and STRONG SHOULDERS, because I don’t want to include these films in my polls or my lists too many times, and I don’t want to fill my poll with too many murderous girls. That’s why my poll this time is full of pregnant girls instead—BELLYFRUIT, VANAJA, WISH YOU WERE HERE, FOR KEEPS?, “I,TARENEH, AM FIFTEEN”, and JUNO. Comparing among these six films, I like JUNO the most. The other five films are realistic about the situation of pregnant girls, while JUNO gives the feeling of a fairy tale, which is a thing I haven’t seen before in films dealing with this situation. The fairy tale ending of JUNO reminds me of the tremendously wonderful ending of BEAUTIFUL THING (1996, Hettie Macdonald, A+).

I also like Matthew Boyd’s review on JUNO in Senses of Cinema, though I don’t fully understand or agree with it. I think his review makes me see the film from other interesting perspectives, instead of seeing it from only my own perspective.

Matthew Boyd’s review on JUNO:
http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/08/47/juno.html

A quote from Matthew Boyd’s article:

“Even more significant, the runners, these symbolic soldiers, are the embodiment of speed. They remind the audience and the residents of Juno’s world of the presence of institutional solidarity in their lives through the symbolic visibility of their uniforms and their routinised group action and, as runners, signify blind, accelerating progress through the currently existing institutional social model.”

If I hadn’t read his review, I wouldn’t have thought about this kind of thing. When I see those male runners in the film, I only think about temptations. Hahaha. The ending of JUNO is not a perfectly happy ending for me, because if I were Juno, I’m sure it would be very very difficult for me to stay faithful to my boyfriend when I keep on seeing those male runners like that.

BOX OF CHOCOLATE (2008, Jaturachai Srichanwanpen, A+++++)

This is my comment in Filmsick’s blog:

TWO OF MY MOST FAVORITE MOMENTS OF 2008

"THE COUNTRY DOES NOT BELONG TO US"--TEERAWAT MULVILAI

I just saw SHATTER ROOM NO. 0 (Teerawat Mulvilai + Jarunun Phantachat, A+), a stage play which is in both Thai and English. I like it a lot, though I don’t understand it. This is a production of B-Floor Theatre, which often makes totally fascinating stage performances which I don’t understand.

I also love the sound design in this play.

The details of the play can be found at:
http://www.bfloortheatre.com

I like what Teerawat Mulvilai wrote in the brochure of this play very much. Here is what he wrote:

“The country does not belong to us.
I like this sentence. It reflects the truth that as the citizen of this country we were attacked from every direction. Effect from politic, economic, it seems like our lives were swung in a room.
A room contains many people.
Every people are different but they have to be together. How do we live together is the question that we have to find out the answer.”

JEWEL AND GODARD

My friend just wrote in his blog that the song STEPHENVILLE, TX by Jewel mentions Godard.

-----------------------

This is my comment in Prap Boonpan and Chai Chaiyachit’s blog:
http://agonisticfilm.exteen.com/20080611/short-film-diary-15

-------------------------------------------------------

This is my comment in a friend’s blog:

RIDE WITH THE DEVIL (1999, Ang Lee, B+)

EVERYTHING IS CINEMA: THE WORKING LIFE OF JEAN-LUC GODARD

NUMBER -- A SHORT STORY BY TOSSAPOL BOONSINSUKH

Tossapol Boonsinsukh wrote some Thai short stories in his blog. I just translated this one into English.

http://yrna.wordpress.com/

“NUMBER

He closed his eyes and tried to reach me by his hands
He told me “eight”
He is an old friend from my high school. He came to see me in late morning.
He told me he could see every number in everything.
My house equals sixteen.
The old green refrigerator equals 0.06
The bedroom wall equals 511.
The little dog equals 0.333…
My girlfriend equals 9.1
And I equal 8.

I asked him what these numbers stand for.
He didn’t know.
He just knew that every time he closed his eyes and held out his hand to anything, a number would appear.

I invited him to take a stroll in my backyard.
The sky equals one.
The trees in the backyard equal six multiplying by six for sixty times.
The music flowing from the house next door equals a great amount of numbers.
I noted down the numbers he told in a large sheet of paper.
We got so many numbers we don’t understand.

The sun set.
I invited him to have dinner with us.
My girlfriend had already made some dinner for him.
1258”

POLL 23: YOUNG GIRLS

My poll 23 is inspired by three films I love and saw in May: JUNO, MIDNIGHT RAINBOW, and DEK JOE. These three films are about female teenagers. So I think I should make a list of my favorite films about female teenagers.

I LOVE THESE FILMS ABOUT YOUNG GIRLS VERY MUCH. WHICH FILMS DO YOU LIKE?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159277/

2.BU SU (1987, Jun Ichikawa, Japan)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204926/

3.DEK JOE (2008, Pakwan Suksomtin, Thailand)

4.DOIN’ THE DO (a music video of Betty Boo, UK)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM_9As_2VAg

5.FOR KEEPS? (1988, John G. Avildsen, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095169/

7.GINGER SNAPS (2000, John Fawcett, Canada)

8.GLASS TEARS (2001, Lai Miu-suet, Hong Kong)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279697/

9.HI TERESKA (2001, Robert Glinski, Poland)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0204926/

10.I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A SAINT (2003, Genevieve Mersch, Luxembourg)

11.I, TARENEH, AM FIFTEEN (2002, Rasul Sadrameli, Iran)

18.VIOLET PERFUME: NOBODY HEARS YOU (2001, Marisa Sistach, Mexico)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280015/

19.WINNING LONDON (2001, Craig Shapiro, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272360/

20.WISH YOU WERE HERE (1987, David Leland, UK)

You can cast multiple votes.

SPOILERS: When I say these films are about female teenagers, I don’t mean that the main topic of the films is female teenagers. In the case of MIDNIGHT RAINBOW, the female teenager in the film is actually “a state of mind” of a brutal female serial killer. In the case of DEK JOE, I’m not 100 % sure that the protagonist of the film is actually a boy or girl, but from my first viewing, I guess the protagonist is a girl who is a psychotic murderer.

I also don’t like the last painting, or actually the political statement in the painting. Can the term “democratic junta” in the painting be considered an oxymoron?

--Tossapol Boonsinsukh has released a teaser of his new film UNDER THE BLANKET. You can watch his teaser at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJTVUJIS4Dg

--Tossapol also wrote a touching story about the inspiration for his new film. You can read his Thai writing at:
http://thirdclasscitizen.exteen.com/20080609/under-the-blanket-teaser

I particularly like his sentence, “For me, the word “blanket” hides the word “blank” in it. Blank means empty, void, devoid of story or as a noun it can mean empty space or a place to be filled. The beginning of MANTA RAY talks about a man who has a big hole in him. The hole is very deep, dark, and cold. A blanket or someone should help him to get through these days and nights.”

Now I’m sure Tossapol’s new film will have the lonely atmosphere as his previous ones.

FUTURE IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE (2002, Mika Taanila, Finland, A+)

FUTURE IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE ในระดับ A+ ไม่ได้เป็นเพราะดนตรีอิเล็กโทรนิกยุคโบราณในหนังเรื่องนี้ แต่เป็นเพราะดิฉันรู้สึกตกใจกับสภาพของ Erkki ในยุคปัจจุบันมากพอสมควร หนังเรื่องนี้นำฟุตเตจเก่าๆที่บันทึกภาพของ Erkki ในทศวรรษ 1960 และ 1970 มาให้เราดู ซึ่งเขาก็ดูน่ารักดีในยุคนั้น แต่พอได้เห็นเขาในยุคปัจจุบัน เขากลับดูน่ากลัวมากๆ แววตาของเขามันดูแห้งผาก แววตาของเขามันดูเปลี่ยนไปจนไม่เหลือเค้าเดิมเลย หนังไม่ได้เล่าให้ฟังว่าเกิดเหตุการณ์อะไรถึงทำให้เขาเปลี่ยนไปขนาดนั้น หรือบางทีอาจจะไม่มีใครรู้ก็ได้ว่าทำไม “แววตา” ของเขาถึงได้เปลี่ยนแปลงไปจนไม่เหลือเค้าเดิม

http://www.avantofestival.com/2002_live/lp_kurenniemi.html

Erkki Kurenniemi
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erkki_Kurenniemi

“The most ambitious of Erkki Kurenniemi's projects was the series of digital synthesizers, called DIMI, in the early 1970s. For example, Kurenniemi's video synthesizer DIMI-O (1970-1971) converted any movements recorded by the video camera into real-time sounds and music. DIMI-S (also known as the "Sexophone") was able to generate sound and light by contact with the skin, reacting to the emotional state of the performers.”

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE HILLS HAVE EYES

This is my comment in a friend’s blog:

THE HILL HAVE EYES (2006, Alexandre Aja, A) เพราะว่าช่วงต้นๆของอินเดียน่าโจนส์ พูดถึงการทดลองระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ในทศวรรษ 1950 ก็เลยทำให้นึกถึงหนังเรื่อง THE HILLS HAVE EYES ที่พูดถึงผลกระทบจากการทดลองนิวเคลียร์อันนั้น ดูไปดูมา แล้วนึกว่า INDIANA JONES 4 = PREQUEL OF “THE HILLS HAVE EYES”

I’m not sure why I don’t much enjoy INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008, Steven Spielberg, B+). I guess it is because I can’t feel involved in the relationship between father-mother-son in this film.

However, the story about the nuclear test in this film reminds me of THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006, Alexandre Aja, A), a film which I much prefer to INDIANA JONES 4. I really feel involved with the family in THE HILLS HAVE EYES. The “family” in INDIANA JONES 4 is so far from my real life. But that’s not the problem of the film, which I think is intended for young audience, not for me. On the other hand, the “family” in THE HILLS HAVE EYES is not so far from my real life.

SEX AND THE CITY (2008, Michael Patrick King, A+)

CARRIE = NOINONG
SAMANTHA = KICHO
MIRANDA = MDS
CHARLOTTE = OLIVER
LOUISE (JENNIFER HUDSON) = BLACK FOREST
CANDICE BERGEN = VESPERTINE
THERAPIST (JOANNA GLEASON) = FRANKENSTEIN
WOMAN IN THE AUCTION TOILET (DAPHNE RUBIN-VEGA) = SENSITIVEMAN

NAKED BEYOND SKIN (Xiang Jing, China, A+)

The exhibition NAKED BEYOND SKIN by Xiang Jing from Shanghai was held at Tang Contemporary Art in Silom Galleria from May 15-June 7. I like it very much. I particularly like the hands and feet of these sculptures.

WU WENGUANG'S FILMS AT CONFERENCE OF BIRDS GALLERY

The information below comes from Conference of Birds Gallery.

Wu Wenguang: "China Village Self-Governance Project"

4-Channel Video Installation
7 June 2008 – 27 June 2008
Gallery Hours Everyday 12pm – 8pm
Opening Party: 7 June 2008 7PM

The Year 2005 saw the beginning of the groundbreaking China Village Documentary Project, which, for the first time in China, opens a visual channel from the villages by putting video cameras in the hands of villagers across the nation. This project represents a new direction for documentary filmmaking in China. In its first phase, the selected topic for documentation was village self-governance:

"What difference has twenty years of democracy in China's 700,000 villages made?" Headed by China's premier documentary filmmaker Mr. WU Wenguang and Mr. JIAN Yi, filmmaker and photographer with the EU program, a group of enthusiastic young people based in Wu Wenguang's Caochangdi("Land of Grass") Workstation in Beijing were the main executors of all these activities.

Context

Village Self-Governance
Acclaimed as a "quiet revolution," China's village self-governance system, started in the early 1980s, can be considered as a significant step in the political history of China. In this new rural governance mechanism installed and protected by the Chinese law, the state power withdraws from the rural areas while the villagers are entitled to elect their own Village Committee and to manage and supervise village affairs in an autonomous and democratic manner. In China's official terms, village self-governance covers democratic election, democratic decision-making, democratic management, and democratic supervision.

The Project

Village self-governance is China's important step forward towards decentralization and democratization. It has changed the dynamics and public lives of China's rural communities, with an estimated total population of some 900 million people. This process, however, is rarely documented for various reasons. This unprecedented project aims at empowering ordinary villagers through documentation through cameras, and seeing the changing realities from the perspective of the people whose lives are dependent on the villages. The films of this project document the daily realities rural people face in China's new village governance mechanism.

RUDE AWAKENING (1980, A+++++)

This is my comment in Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/06/cinema-revulsion.html

As for Hammer Studio, I highly recommend RUDE AWAKENING, starring Denholm Elliot. It is an episode in a tv series called HAMMER HOUSE OF HORROR (1980), which is available as a four-disc dvd box set. RUDE AWAKENING is included in disc one. I watched RUDE AWAKENING when I was a little child, and haven’t forgotten it for the past 25 years or so. I love the storytelling structure of this TV episode very much. I’m not sure how I will feel if I watch it again. But judging from my first impression, it is totally great.

7.THOMAS HARLAN – MOVING SHRAPNEL (2007, Christoph Huebner, documentary, Germany, 96 min)

Christoph Huebner directed THE CHAMPIONS (2003, A+++++), which was shown at Thammasat University library a few years ago.

Here is some information about THOMAS HARLAN – MOVING SHRAPNEL from the website below:
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=1581

“Thomas Harlan, author and filmmaker, was born in 1929 as the only son of the German film director Veit Harlan and the actress Hilde Koerber. He grew up in Berlin and as a child sat at Hitler's dinner table. In 1942 he was evacuated to Pommern. After WWII, he returned to Berlin, followed by emigration to France in 1948. An author of plays, prose and poetry he began researching National Socialist war crimes in 1959 in Poland, which led to numerous court cases against suspects in West Germany. In 1964 his father died. Since 2001 he has been residing in a respiratory clinic in Southern Germany.

"I came across Thomas Harlan for the first time in the course of a retrospective of his films at the Munich Film Museum. For a longer period of time, I had myself been working on the subject of 'children and grand-children of the Nazi Period.' I drove to Munich to meet Thomas Harlan and we decided to work on a film together." (Christoph Huebner)

The result is a full-length documentary, consisting of major and minor fragments, circling around a topic without defining it in full and without offering easy explanations. Moving Shrapnel is what Thomas Harlan called these fragments at the beginning. They enter the body by injury. They can be painful and irritating in the long run.”

POLL 22: LONELY ATMOSPHERE

My twenty-second poll is inspired by good news. Two new short films by Tossapol Boonsinsukh will be shown at Bioscope Theatre on Friday, June 27, at 1900 hrs. You can find more details in Thai at:
