MY IMAGINARY VIDEO INSTALLATION

My comment in Graiwoot's facebook:

I want to create a video installation as a labyrinth. In this haunting labyrinth, the viewers will encounter many TV sets and film screens, showing the films of Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jacques Rivette, Dario Argento, David Lynch, Alain Resnais, Philippe Grandrieux, Peter Greenaway, Pavel Jurácek, Andrzej Zulawski, and Val Lewton. The viewers will only find the exit when they pay respect to the TV set showing THE SELF-MADE DAME (คุณหญิงบ่าวตั้ง) and find a secret door in the floor in front of that TV screen. Hahaha.

MY SOUL TO TAKE VS. TWIN PEAKS

My comment in Filmsick's Facebook on MY SOUL TO TAKE (Wes Craven, A+/A):

ใน MY SOUL TO TAKE เวอร์ชันละครทีวี เราอยากให้มี

BREAKING THE WAVES

GOOD DREAM (2010, Gorragod Nonkukedkong, A)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BDJp6nuYeQ

(From my Facebook)

QUOTATION MARK (2010, Tanakit Kitsanayunyong, A+++++)

THAI FILMS SEEN ON AUGUST 1

1.QUOTATION MARK (2010, Tanakit Kitsanayunyong, A+)
My comment on this film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwRoTkudptg

2.DISAPPEAR (2010, Tani Thitiprawat, A+)
One of the most surprising films of the year. It begins like REAR WINDOWS or some Hitchcock films, then it turns into a torture porn film, a Tarantino-esque gangster film, a tribute to KAIRO (Kiyoshi Kurosawa), and a film about aliens from outer space. Tani Thitiprawat is the real thing.

3.HANABI (2010, Sudchana Matkaran, partly animation, A+)
One of my most favorite romantic films of all time. This unambitious film captures very well the desire of a female character. Its dreamlike, romantic world reminds me of the time when I was very young, the time when I was innocent, the time when I still read the Japanese cartoons by Igarashi Yumiko, the time when I still stupidly believed that one day I would find a handsome soulmate. The film uses the song SORA MO TOBERU HAZU by Spitz very effectively.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-I9Tn6RL0Q&feature=related

The real world is cruel, way too cruel. This film is a perfect escape.

4.DEATHLESS DISTANCE (2009, Taiki Sakpisit, A+)

An extremely atmospheric film which defies explanation. The images in this film don't have power over me as much as other films by Taiki, but the film still has some unexplainable power.

5.I PROMISE (2010, Thanawate Sunyanuchit, documentary, A+)
I like this documentary very much. I think it is partly because this documentary treats the people appearing before the camera as human beings, not as instruments to support the message of the documentarians.

6.NEED 3 STORY: HAUNTED HOUSE (2010, Jinna Rujisenee, A+)
I think this film is very effective. It has a good plot. I like the horny female supporting character in this film very much.

7.NEED 3 STORY: MANIAC (2009, Jinna Rujisenee, A+)
I think this is a very good ghost film. It doesn't try to scare the audience too frequently. The filmmaker seems to believe in the power of his story, so he just focuses on telling his story carefully. and effectively.

8.ART (2010, Panja Saitong, A+)
I like the hero's friend in this film very much. This character is very funny.

9.I AM MURDERER (2010, Panit Jirawattananunt, A+)
Is this film about Thai political problem?

10.ANNITA HEART AND MACHINE (2010, Rusharil Hutangkabodee, A+/A)
I like the performance of the mother in this film very much. I think the story needs some adjustment before it can become truly great and touching.

11.HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS' TRIP TO KANCHANABURI (2010, Tivaporn Vongpan, documentary, A)
I think of this charming, unsophisticated film as a flip side of SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY. While SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY is like a magical side of hospital people, this documentary is a reality side. It wouldn't surprise me at all if I see characters from Apichatpong's films mingle with the real people portrayed in this documentary.

Though this documentary has some boring moments and is too long, it also provides a lot of laughs. It allows us to have a glimpse of the real life of these people. Unfortunately, it allows us to see only the happy side of them.

Because this film is extremely simple, it becomes unique in this festival.

I learned from FILM COMMENT magazine that Jonas Mekas wrote 38 years ago, "The most beautiful movie poetry will be revealed someday in home-movie footage. The day is close when home movies will be appreciated as beautiful folk art. Time is laying a veil of poetry over them."

FUENG (2010, Teerani Siangsanoh + Wachara Kanha + Tani Thitiprawat, A+), which is a kind of home movie, is extremely poetic. HOSPITAL VOLUNTEERS' TRIP TO KANCHANABURI, WALK TO PHUKET (2010, Tanaporn Sae-low, A+), and HITCHPACKER (2010, Sutham Jeerasilp, A+) are not poetic, because the filmmakers never intend them to be. However, I feel that with the right kind of editing, the right kind of angles, the right kind of way of seeing, these home movies/unsophisticated documentaries could have become great. There is a great potential hidden behind this kind of documentaries. I hope some filmmakers will see this great potential and use it effectively in the future. I hope some filmmakers can maximize the rustic charms of home movies and couple them with the poetic charms of experimental films.

You can watch this film here:
http://www.vimeo.com/14918391
This is a very stylish film. I like its outrageousness very much. It reminds me of the films of Seijun Suzuki, Takeshi Kitano, and Takeshi Miike. I particularly like the character whose head resembles a Buddha sculpture.

3.SWEETHEART (2010, Woratep Tummaoros, A+)
This film is very homoerotic, and that's why it may be my most favorite film of Woratep.

4.THE MASK (2010, Sittipong Patchakao, A+)
This is very haunting. I like the sinister atmosphere in this film very much.

5.IN SPACE (2009, Visra Vichit-Vadakan, A+)

I like the three states of mind portrayed in the film very much: the dream, the afterlife, and the trance.

6.CLOSER (2010, Wachara Kanha + Wisit Saonoi, A+)
This film is hard to understand, but I like the look of this film very much. Many things in it, especially the special effects, unintentionally remind of the music videos of Kate Bush in the 1980's, particularly ARMY DREAMERS, BREATHING, and RUNNING UP THAT HILL.

7.PINK LADY (2010, Piyaphong Phakuntod, A+)
I like the chemicals between the three female characters in this film very much. It reminds me of the power of PRASART (1975, Pieak Poster, A+), which deals with three neurotic female characters.

8.AN(OTHER) (2010, Apasri Titatarn, animation, A+)
I like the look of this film very much.

9.2 PHOBIA (Sompong Soda, A+)
This film may look like a horror film, but it turns out that the ghosts or the supernatural events in this film can be explained in very funny ways. This film seems like a small project. It is not ambitious. But it really works.

10.MISBEHAVERS (2010, Nattawut Poonpiriya, A+)
I like many things in this film especially the acting. However, I would have loved this film much more if the film didn't make me feel as if it wants to tell the audience, "Don't do drugs", "Please behave well", "Please think about your own parents before you spend your money", or things like that.

11.AN AUTOMATIC VIDEO LOOP: REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE AND AFTER VIEWING THE ART CENTER (2010, Scene 22, A+)
The title of this film explains it all. What is mysterious is the intention of the directors. Is all of this is meant to be serious or meant for laughing? Does this film want the audience to just follow the instructions or look down on the instructions?

12.SOMETHING WRONG IN YOUR BED (2010, Prempapat Plittapolkarnpim, A+)
One of my most favorite films of Prempapat. It depicts a disturbing relationship between a mature woman and a young boy. I like the heroine of this film very much. Though it is not as daring as MURMUR OF THE HEART (1971, Louis Malle) or KUNG-FU MASTER! (1988, Agnès Varda), it is still satisfying.

13.AESTHETIC FOR LIFE (2009, Worwon Tungcharoen, documentary, A+)
This is a lecture film which can be shown to students. What I like in this film is the fact that it can make the lecture easy to follow and not boring at all.

14.THE COLOUR (2010, Panja Saitong, A+)
Panja made many films this year. This is one of his better efforts. It portrays the sad truth of Thai society in an effective way.

15.SOCIAL EFFECTS (2010, Samart Somboon, A+)
I like the part which deals with a daughter who doesn't appreciate the gift from her father. It really hurts. And it reminds me of FROM MOM (2994, Unchalee Thaingamsin, A+).

16.NEVER GONE AGAIN (2009, Satit Khongsuk, A+)
This is a very funny film. I like the scene in which the hero searches for his lost girlfriend in the forest, and then he finds out the real reason why the heroine disappears (she wants to find a place where she can shit).

17.NEVER GONE AGAIN 2 (Satit Khongsuk, A+)
The film spends much time with the characters walking up and down a building. This is the kind of scene which is not shown in most films. I also like the way the female character introduces herself at the end of this film.

18.RIGHT ON IT (2009, Rajapruk Tiyajamorn, A+)
I like RIGHT ON IT and WAY (2010, Rajapruk Tiyajamorn, A+) very much. They don't tell original stories. The stories they told seem to resemble a thousand other films, but everything in these two films seems to be in its right place. RIGHT ON IT is very touching.

19.STOP (2010, Teera Prachumkong, A+)
I think this film satirizes the belief of some Thai people, the belief that if you donate 10-20 baht, you may win a lottery for 1,000 baht or something like that. Thus, the donation of these people does not come from generosity, but comes from greed.

20.NOISE (2010, Wanalee Teanchan, A+)

21.0 (2010, Suttipong Komhom, A+)
I can't remember now why I gave this film A+ after I had just seen it.

22.HEAVEN (2009, Nattawut Poonpiriya, A+/A)
I like the idea of this film very much. It is about two ghosts falling in love with each other.

23.MOFO LIFE SIZE DOLL 2 (2009, Alwa Ritsila + Phatamon Chitarachinda, A+/A)
I think this film is a bit too violent for my taste, and the violence seems to become repetitive. However, I like the scene in which the daughter finds the body of her mother very much, because I think this scene is a tribute to LITTLE LIFE (2009, Rungkarn Kaewsuwan, animation, A+).

24.LOST (2010, Takornpath Rojanavanit, A+/A)
The ending of this film is surprising for me, because it is unresolved, if I remember it correctly. I also wonder if this film has a subtext or a political subtext or not.

25.HYPNOTIZE (2010, Nathawut Praphong, animation, A+/A)

26.HOW A UNIVERSITY STUDENT SHOULD BEHAVE WHILE TRAINING (Naresuan University student, documentary, A)
This film is not meant to be shown in this festival. It was shown by a mistake. But it is very enjoyable and causes a lot of unintentional laughter.

27.LIFT DOWN (2009, Tawit Singnoi, animation, A)

28.ROASTED PORK (2010, Patiparn Boontarig, A)
Does this film romanticize the poor like DOG GOD AND FULL WATER? I'm not sure. This kind of stories reminds me of a poor old woman in my neighborhood who voluntarily shares some of her own food with a poor dog. How can a poor old woman be so generous like that? Much more generous than many middle-class people. However, the question is what an appropriate way to depict this kind of kindness in a film is. Maybe the appropriate way is to depict this kind of kindness in a matter-of-fact way, in an objective way, not in a romanticized way, not in a didactic way.

29.CRAZY (2010, Kasamol Thongtip, A)

30.LIGHT OF LOVE (2010, Pitchayakarn Masuk, A)
This is very funny.

31.HOW OUR DAYS ARE DIFFERENT (2010, Tanakit Roumtaku, A)

32.ONLINE (2009, Sippanon Rodkumtuy, animation, A)

33.FINISH LINE (2009, Jumpoth Ruayjaroensap + Kompech Hongha, A-)

34.SAJJATHAM (2009, Surasak Dusitsathitkaival, B+)
I think this film is ordinary, but I like the temple portrayed in this film.

35.SIAM ARAYA (2010, Thanawut Kukkua, animation, B+)
I think this is a standard advertisement for culture.

2.GOOD MORNING (2009, Sinjai Piraisangjun, A+)
I like the bus stop in this film very much. It doesn't attempt to look real at all. This is my favorite set decoration of the year 2010.

3.RUNNING (2009, Nipaporn Kunsing + Pimpetch Pimtong, A+)

4.SOMWANG 2553 (2010, Norachai Kajchapanont, documentary, A+/A)
I think this film may try too hard to be poetic, but I like some of its ideas. At first it looks like this film is just a behind-the-scene documentary about the making of SOMWANG 2552 (2009, Thitiwat Samitinan, A+), but it turns out to be much more than that. It becomes a semi-experimental, atmospheric film. It also makes me think about the documentary SECOND-CLASS THEATRE (2005, Norachai Kajchapanont, 12 min, A+). I wonder if the ruined theatre in SOMWANG 2553 is the same theatre presented in SECOND-CLASS THEATRE. If the answer is yes, I think SOMWANG 2553 can be considered as both a sequel to SOMWANG 2552 and to SECOND-CLASS THEATRE.

5.TEEN SEX IN SUMMER (2010, Nawajul Boonpucknavig, A+/A)

6.THE PLACE YOU'VE CONNECTED IS NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME (2009, Patchara Eaimtrakul, A+/A)
I don't understand this film, but I think it is not as "strange" or "unique" as I wish it could be. The images in this film look too much like the images in many Thai experimental/atmospheric films, though the part about the woman makes this film a bit different from others.

7.HAPPY TICKET (2010, Apichart Sukontaprauk, A+/A)

8.WAR AND PEACE (2010, Patana Chirawong, A)
I don't remember much about this film. If I remember it correctly, this is a kind of films about kids or a kind of message films that I don't normally like.

9.MIND (2010, Thintavan Burawat, A)
I think this film gives me the same kind of feelings I get from some cult films. The first part is effectively mysterious. The second part in which the monsters appear looks a bit ridiculous, but the funny looks of these creatures make them very memorable. These creatures may not be appropriate to appear in a serious film, but they would be very useful in a cult film. The funny and strange feelings I get from MIND remind me of THE BODY BENEATH (1970, Andy Milligan).

THAI FILMS SEEN ON JULY 29

1.WE WILL FORGET IT AGAIN (2010, Napat Treepalawisetkun, A+)

My comment on this film:

2.TO WALK NIGHT (2009, Tani Thitiprawat, A+)
Tani is one of the most interesting Thai filmmakers emerging this year. His films combine different genres like no one else. This film begins like a romantic comedy, then it turns into a psychotic film like FUNNY GAMES, then it focuses on the mind of the killer like TAXI DRIVER, then it turns into a zombie film, which surprises every audience. Wachara Kanha stars in this film.

3.1BY1 (2009, Tanachit Moongkoonkumshound, A+)
Wachara Kanha also stars in this psychotic film. It begins with some cartoon drawings, telling about the emerging of a serial killer like the one in SAW. My favorite scene in this film is the elevator door scene. I think it is very powerful. The moment when the serial killer tries to imitate Bruce Lee is very funny and surprising.

If torture films can be compared to steaks, I think Alwa Ritsila's films are raw steaks, DEPT OF KILL (2009, Panit Jirawattananunt, A+) is a medium rare steak. 1BY1 is a medium steak. TORTURE ROOM (2010, Patiparn Boontarig, A+) is a well-done steak. Each of them is delicious in its own way.

4.FLY AWAY WITH JOHN WATERS (2009, Rut Ngarmariyakul, A+)
This film is very funny and lovely.

5.ANOTHER DAY TO PHD (2010, Viroj Suttisima, A+)
I don't know if this film is a documentary or a mockumentary. I don't know which parts of this film are real and which parts are fiction. At first I thought this film is a documentary, but the ending of this film makes me question what I just saw.

6.VERDICT (2010, Atithep Ngamsilstian, A+)
This film is a guilty pleasure. I think the male student in this film is cute, and that fits very well with the story about a female teacher who may sexually abuses her male student.

7.SECRET OF GODFATHER (2010, Yongyut Nethwong, A)
Chaloemkiat Saeyong is an editor of this film, and I like the editing near the end of this film very much.

8.SHIFTING CULTIVATION (2010, Pisut Srimhok, documentary, A)

THAI FILMS SEEN ON JULY 27

1.BEAUTIFUL DAY (Krissada Tipchaimeta, A+)

I don't really understand this film in my first viewing , but I like its ending very much. It gives me a very good feeling.

3.AFTER THE WIND (2009, Tulapop Saenjaroen, A+)
I like the scene in which the twins stare at the sky. It makes me feel the power of something which is beyond "story", "plot", "characters", or "what is visible". It makes me feel something invisible, something which is beyond the frame or the image on the screen.

4.BAD-GOOD, 2013 (2010, Viroj Suttisima, A+)
I like the political aspect of this film very much. It is very brave.

5.FIRST LOVE FIRST LAST (2009, Wachara Kanha, A+)
Normally I don't like romantic films, but this film is an exception, because it really surprises me at the end. This is a romantic film in which the hero and the heroine never meet each other.

6.THE MOTORCYCLE (2010, Anupong Aramboot, A+)
The bottom scene is one of the classic scenes this year.

7.SAFE ZONE (2010, Chakorn Chaiprecha, A+)
I like the political aspects of this film very much, especially the mentioning of the case of Thanakorn Piyapoldirek, who was shot dead at a balcony of a condominium.
http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/investigation/39089/in-the-wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2010/05/rip-to-kumpan-bazoos-friend-who-was.html

8.STORYTELLING (2010, Sompot Chidgasornpongse, A+)
I don't think I understand the intention of the director in my first viewing of this film, but that is what makes this film interesting. In this film, a man tells a short story to a woman, while we see some seemingly unimportant activities of them. What should I focus in this film? The story being told? Their relationship? The connection between the story and their relationship? Their small gestures?

9.THE CIRCLE (2010, Alongkot Duangruksa, A+)
I like the art direction of this film, and its story makes me think about my life, my friends' lives, and the fact that we should be happy to see the guy we love get married to a woman.

10.RELEASE (2010, Wacharapol Saisongkroh, A+)
Some of Wacharapol's films have the same weakness—they are didactic. This film is also didactic, but I like it very much, because its message is very surprising. I couldn't guess its message during the first few minutes of this film. I also wonder if the message of this film can be interpreted in a sexual way or not.

11.COMBINATION (2010, Manasak Khlongchainan, A+)

I like the idea of this film—its splitting screens show the upper half of a foreign man and the lower half of a Thai woman, but I'm not sure about the attitude of this film. I totally support the marriages between foreigners and Thais, but I'm not sure if this film shares my attitude or not.

12.SAVE THE TIME (2009, Suthin Kongkoed, A+)

18.BIZARRE LOVE VOODOO (2009, Passanan Romviras, animation, A)

19.UNQUELITY (2010, Wacharapol Saisongkroh, A/A-)

I think this film is too straightforward in telling its story or sending its message. Maybe it would work better if the film is longer, so that the characters in this film can have time to breathe or do other things which can make them look more "human", instead of just being "an instrument to send the message".

20.CITIZEN TRAIN (2009, Authawut Boonyuang + Kakanang Gohnoi, documentary, A-)

I couldn't understand what the interviewees are saying in this film. I think this film may have a sound problem, which can be corrected by adding subtitles.

MORE COMMENT ON REIGN OF ASSASSINS

(My reply on Filmsick's Facebook)

15 AUTHORS

15 AUTHORS

I was tagged by Chanchana พจน์ปรีชา for this.

The Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen authors (poets included) who've influenced you and that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes...no particular order required.

FAIR GAME (2010, Doug Liman, A+++++)

FAIR GAME (2010, Doug Liman, A+++++)

I like this film very much, because I think this film is the opposite of THE DOG (ชิงหมาเถิด) (2010, Pongpat Wachirabanjong, C+).

The scenes I love in FAIR GAME are the scene in which the heroine is accused of being a communist, the scene in which the hero is accused of not being nationalistic in a restaurant, and the scene in which the hero gives a speech near the end of the film.

A TRIP TO CHOLBURI AND CHACHOENGSAO

JUN ICHIKAWA VS. TOSSAPOL BOONSINSUKH

I once compared Tossapol Boonsinsukh with Jun Ichikawa in Senses of Cinema
http://www.sensesofcinema.com/2006/38/world_poll3/#Phokaew

Reading Jun Ichikawa's interview makes me think about Tossapol. Here is a quote from Jun Ichikawa:
http://eigageijutsu.blogspot.com/2010/10/jun-ichikawa-interview.html
"That film is about how a group of friends go their separate ways. Friends can't always stay together -- a time for saying good-by must come. You might call it a youth movie [seishun eiga], but it also about a film about growing up, and I feel that growing up is a lonely thing to do. Growing up is a good thing, but the more people become adults, the lonelier they get. Growing up means saying good-by, it means losing something."

(Thanks to Merveillesxx for telling me about this interview)

I think the quote above can also be used to describe 30 (2010, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, A+++++++++++++++).

REIGN OF ASSASSINS (2010, Su Chao-bin + John Woo, A+++++++++++++++)

REIGN OF ASSASSINS (2010, Su Chao-bin + John Woo, A+++++++++++++++)

Things I like very much in this film include:

1.In the early part of the film, the heroine kills a young boy for self-defence. Thus, the film does not conform to the rule "Children and dogs always survive", which seems to be a problem in most Hollywood films. I don't hate children or dogs, but this kind of rules limits the possibilities of the plot, story, or film. Conforming to this rule makes the film more boring, such as MIMIC (1997, Guillermo Del Toro), in which some audience can predict beforehand that the boy will survive. Destroying this rule makes the film much more memorable, such as THE MIST (Frank Darabont, A+++++++++++++++), and FALLING SKY (2002, Gunnar Vikene).

2.The fighting scene in this film is very exciting. I think it is as exciting as IP MAN 2 (2010, Wilson Yip, A+++++), but the main difference is that the fighting scenes in REIGN OF ASSASSINS are more fantasy-based, while the fighting scenes in IP MAN 2 are more reality-based. I usually prefer the fighting scenes which are fantasy-based, because I grew up worshipping the fighting scenes in SUKEBAN DEKA TV series.

3.A character in this film uses poisoned needles as his weapon. Poisoned needles are one of my most favorite weapons, but they are rarely used effectively in recent action films. I think REIGN OF ASSASSINS is the only film I know which uses poisoned needles in fighting effectively. As for TV series, the one which uses poisoned needles effectively is THE RETURN OF THE CONDOR HEROES (1983-1984). The character who uses it is Lee Mok-sau, which is one of my most favorite characters of all time.

4.The opening part of REIGN OF ASSASSINS shocks me as much as the opening part of SCREAM, because characters whom I assume would be main characters are murdered within a few minutes. In the opening part of REIGN OF ASSASSINS, there are a male assassin character and a female assassin character who look very interesting, but they are murdered by the heroine instantly.

5.I love the personalities of the female characters in this film very much, including the heroine; the female assassin who is murdered in the opening part; Turquoise (the new assassin who tries to replace the heroine); and Kongdong Blue Sword. All of them look very graceful.

6.The male characters in this film are very desirable, including Jung Woo-sung, Shawn Yue, and Li Zong Han (Calvin Li).

7.I love films of which supporting characters are very strong, such as the X-Men series. REIGN OF ASSASSINS has many strong supporting characters, especially The Magician and Wisdom (the Buddhist Monk).

8.The lack of humor in this film conforms to my taste. Generally I prefer serious action films such as SWORDSMAN, SWORDSMAN II, and REIGN OF ASSASSINS, to action-comedy films.

9.I usually like films/TV series of which the heroines are very good in fighting, such as KICK-ASS (2010, Matthew Vaughn), SWORDSMAN II, SUKEBAN DEKA, GOLDEN SWALLOW, PAINTED SKIN, and THE HEROIC TRIO.

10.I think the role of Michelle Yeoh in REIGN OF ASSASSINS is one of her best roles. It is as good as her role in THE HEROIC TRIO. I'm very much disappointed with Michelle's role in TRUE LEGEND (2010, Yuen Woo-ping, C+) and had assumed that Michelle's career might be finished. Fortunately, her role in REIGN OF ASSASSINS proves otherwise.

FILM DISCUSSION IN WFFBKK 2010

I enjoyed the discussion about films late at night very much.

KING SEBASTIÃO OF PORTUGAL

The reincarnation of King Sebastião of Portugal (or the Hidden One) is presented in THE PORTUGUESE NUN (2009, Eugène Green, A+++++++++++++++)

From Wikipedia:
" After the defeat at Alcácer Quibir many diligences were made to ransom the imprisoned soldiers. Several soldiers returned to Portugal (and among them was D. António, Prior of Crato), which, added to uncertainty over Sebastian's fate, led many Portuguese to believe Sebastian survived the battle and would return to claim his throne. This led to Sebastianism: the belief that Sebastian could return at any moment. Politically, there was the belief that Philip was not the rightful heir to the throne. Subsequently there was the appearance, in Portugal, of men fraudulently claiming to be the King. During the time of the Iberian Union, between 1580 and 1640, four different pretenders claimed to be the returned King Sebastian; the last of these pretenders, who was in fact an Italian, was hanged in 1619.

In the long term, it led to the development of myths and legends concerning Sebastian, the principal one being that he was a great Portuguese patriot, the "sleeping king" who would return to help Portugal in its darkest hour (similar to the British King Arthur, the German Frederick Barbarossa or the Byzantine Constantine XI Palaeologus). He would then be known by symbolic names: O Encoberto(The Hidden One) who would return on a foggy morning to save Portugal; or as O Desejado (The Desired). The legend was vigorously promoted through the massive circulation of popular rhymes (trovas) written by Bandarra. Even as late as the 19th century, Sebastianist peasants in the Brazilian sertão believed that the king would return to help them in their rebellion against the "godless"Brazilian republic."
