POLL 54: IN THE NAME OF THE FILM

My poll 54 is inspired by the latest videos of Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook. I love both her videos, and their long, unique titles. You can see the titles of her six latest videos here:
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2009/04/araya-rasdjarmrearnsooks-partial.html

I think some film titles lack imagination, such as GHOST, GHOSTS, THE GHOST, A GHOST, or something like that; or LOVE LETTER, LOVE LETTERS, THE LOVE LETTER, or something like that. These film titles make it very difficult to search for its information on the internet.

I also have problems remembering which Yasujiro Ozu’s films I have seen. Have I seen EARLY SPRING, or EARLY SUMMER, or THE END OF SUMMER, or LATE AUTUMN, or LATE SPRING?

Araya’s film titles inspire me to make a list of these film titles that I like.

I LOVE THESE FILMS AND THEIR TITLES. WHICH FILM TITLES DO YOU LIKE?

1.ALICE DOESN'T LIVE HERE ANY MORE (1974, Martin Scorsese, USA)

2.CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1974, Jacques Rivette, France)

3.A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION (1994, Edward Yang, Taiwan)

4.DON'T USE MICROWAVE TO WARM EGGS OR ELSE THEY WILL EXPLODE! (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Thailand)

5.THE DUMB DIE FAST, THE SMART DIE SLOW (1991, Manop Udomdej, Thailand)

6.GARM (LUST) (กาม) (1978, Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol, Thailand)

7.THE GOALIE'S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK (1971, Wim Wenders, West Germany)

8.IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE, THE SOLE OBJECT OF ATTENTION SHOULD BE THE TREACHERY OF THE MOON (2009, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Thailand)

9.JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES (1975, Chantal Akerman, Belgium)

10.JOAN OF ARC OF MONGOLIA (1989, Ulrike Ottinger, West Germany)

11.THE LAST TIME I COMMITTED SUICIDE (1996, Stephen Kay, USA)

12.LIFE AS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (2000, Krzysztof Zanussi, Poland)

13.LOVE IS COLDER THAN DEATH (1969, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, West Germany)

14.THE POSITIVELY TRUE ADVENTURES OF THE ALLEGED TEXAS CHEERLEADER-MURDERING MOM (1993, Michael Ritchie, USA)

15.PRENOM CARMEN (1983, Jean-Luc Godard, France)
I think it is very interesting that the word PRENOM here can mean both FIRST NAME and BEFORE THE NAME.

16.THE SECOND AWAKENING OF CHRISTA KLAGES (1978, Margarethe von Trotta, West Germany)

17.UNPRONOUNCABLE IN THE LINGUISTIC IMPERIALISM OF YOURS (2008, Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, Thailand)

18.WHEN A WOMAN ASCENDS THE STAIRS (1960, Mikio Naruse, Japan)

19.WHO WISHES TO REPRESENT AN ANGEL, MAKES A BEAST (2007, Christine Laquet, video installation)

20.YESTERDAY'S TOMORROW (1978, Wolfgang Staudte, West Germany)
I saw this film many years ago, but I am still not sure if the film title means YESTERDAY IS TOMORROW or THE TOMORROW OF YESTERDAY. I guess it is the latter. The storytelling in this film jumps back and forth between time, so I think this film title really suits the film.

The German title of this film is ZWISCHENGLEIS, and sometimes this film is titled THE MIDDLE RAIL.

You can cast multiple votes.

Apart from the 20 titles above, I also love the following films and their titles:

21.THE ALL-ROUND REDUCED PERSONALITY – REDUPERS (1977, Helke Sander, West Germany)

22.ARTISTES AT THE TOP OF THE BIG TOP: DISORIENTATED (1968, Alexander Kluge, West Germany)

23.THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (1972, Luis Bunuel, France)

24.EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF AND GOD AGAINST ALL (1974, Werner Herzog, West Germany)

25.THE FUTURE IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE (2002, Mika Taanila, Finland)

26.LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971, John D. Hancock, USA)

27.THE MURDERERS ARE AMONG US (1946, Wolfgang Staudte, Germany)

28.ONCE YOU'RE BORN YOU CAN NO LONGER HIDE (2005, Marco Tullio Giordana, Italy)

29.WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988, Pedro Almodovar, Spain)

I also love the following film titles because the films show the opposite of the titles:

30.LE BONHEUR (1965, Agnes Varda, France)

31.LIFE IS A LONG QUIET RIVER (1988, Etienne Chatiliez, France)

32.THINGS YOU CAN TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT HER (2000, Rodrigo Garcia)

--There are many Thai films which I haven’t seen, but I found their titles very interesting. These Thai films include:

(The English titles below are not official English titles. I just tried to translate their titles from the Thai ones.)

1.CAPTIVE HUSBAND (ผัวเชลย) (1985, Permpol Choei-aroon)

The Thai title of this film can be literally translated as SHE CRIED LAST NIGHT, but the website Thaifilmdb.com lists the English title of this film as MARY JANE HARPER CRIED LAST NIGHT. So I guess this film may be adapted from MARY JANE HARPER CRIED LAST NIGHT (1977, Allen Reisner, USA).

17.OUTSIDER HUSBAND (ผัวนอกคอก) (1980, Samarn Thongsupsin)
Starring Wasana Sittiwate

She got 0 vote.

--My own vote is for Anita Mui, Deborah Harry, Janet Khiew, Liza Minnelli, Marlene Dietrich, Miho Nakayama, Miki Imai, Nico, Patsy Kensit, Sandrine Kiberlain, and Yoko Minamino.

I vote for Anita Mui, Marlene Dietrich, and Sandrine Kiberlain because I like their acting. I vote for Deborah Harry, Janet Khiew, Liza Minnelli, Miho Nakayama, Miki Imai, Nico, and Patsy Kensit because I like their songs. I vote for Yoko Minamino because I like both her acting and her songs.

--I’m a little bit surprised that Hiroko Yakushimaru got zero vote, because I think her voice is very sweet. I like her voice and the song KATARI TSUGU AINI very much. I’m very glad that this song is available in Youtube, because my cassette tape containing this song has beeen damaged by fungi.

I’m not sure if Hiroko is a good actress or not. As for her films, I have seen THE TERRIBLE COUPLE (1980, Shinji Somai, A-), TWINKLE (1992, Joji Matsuoka, A-), and ALWAYS – SUNSET ON THIRD STREET (2005, Takashi Yamazaki, C+).

--I like Janet Khiew very much. One song of her that I love is THE
BORROWERS OF THE BANK OF AGRICULTURE (ลูกหนี้ธ.ก.

You can listen to this song here:
http://www.esnips.com/doc/fbff77f4-393f-421e-a113-649abfcf2db2/ลูกหนี้-ธ.ก.ส.

This is the lyrics of the song translated by me:

BOA Bank of Agriculture
We, the farmers, can depend on it
We can get a mortgage on our own land and rice field
So that we can get the money flow

To be in debt is an ordinary thing
It’s not a shame at all to have debts
We still visit each other
We don’t look down on those who have debts
Look around you, they are all the borrowers of BOA

Thank you Thank you Thank you BOA
You are the saint You are the saviour You are so kind You are noble
Every member of the poor
You can borrow as much as you can
Contact BOA, so that it can help us

BOA Bank of Agriculture
Very reliable bank
This bank is always there for us
Whenever we are broke
We use our title deed as collateral
Whenever we have money
We pay our debts to BOA

--Miki Imai is one of my most favorite singers of all time.

JE SUIS D'UNE GENERATION DESENCHANTEE

I love the music video DESENCHANTEE by Mylene Farmer. It is directed by Laurent Boutonnat. This music video made me cry, especially the scene in which the child massacred the guards.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGxPrIhs4Lo

This is the lyrics:

“Nager dans les eaux troubles
Des lendemains
Attendre ici la fin
Flotter dans l´air trop lourd
Du presque rien
A qui tendre la main

Si je dois tomber de haut
Que ma chute soit lente
Je n´ai trouvé de repos
Que dans l´indifférence
Pourtant, je voudrais retrouver l´innocence
Mais rien n´a de sens, et rien ne va

Tout est chaos
A côté
Tous mes idéaux : des mots
Abimés...

Je cherche une âme, qui
Pourra m´aider
Je suis
D´une géneration désenchantée,
Désenchantée

Qui pourrait m´empêcher
De tout entendre
Quand la raison s´effondre
A quel sein se vouer
Qui peut prétendre
Nous bercer dans son ventre

Si la mort est un mystère
La vie n´a rien de tendre
Si le ciel a un enfer
Le ciel peut bien m´attendre
Dis moi,

This is the lyrics translated by Google:

“Swimming in troubled waters
Tomorrow
Wait by the end
Floating in the air too heavy
Of almost nothing
Who reach out

If I do get high
May my fall be slow
I have found rest
That the indifference
However, I would like to regain innocence
But nothing has meaning, and nothing will

Everything is chaos
Next
All my ideals: words
Damaged ...
I am looking for a soul, which
May help

I am
In a disenchanted generation,
Disenchanted

Who could help but
Hear any
When reason collapses
How to turn within
Who can claim
We rocked in her belly

If death is a mystery
Life is not soft
If Heaven has a hell
The sky may well expect
Tell me,
In these headwinds how
Nothing has meaning, nothing does.”

CUTE ACTOR: PAOTONG TONGJEUA

This is my comment in Screenout Webboard:
http://zaa.xq28.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=79&start=600

Black Forest

A Thai actor whose look I like very much is Paotong Tongjuea, who stars in CHAN POOCHAY NAYA (1987, M.L. Bhandevanop Devakul, A+)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3591/3459661620_f48101cfea_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3459661638_48d836f2ba_o.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3560/3459661634_9f806a279f_o.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3649/3459661630_efdc02321c_o.jpg

Desirable actors

1.Masanobu Ando – FOREVER ENTHRALLED (2008, Chen Kaige, A+)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3530/3459679234_d89e68877f_o.jpg

2.Shim Ji-ho (Seung Gi) – A FROZEN FLOWER (2008, Ha Yu, A+/A)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3504/3459661652_bf9ae2c331_o.jpg

3.Yoo Ah-in – ANTIQUE (2008, Min Kyu-dong, A+)
He looks very young in the photo, but actually he was born in 1986.

You can cast multiple voters.

MARGUERITE DURAS IS THE WINNER

My poll 52 ended with 14 votes. That’s great! Thanks very much to everyone who participated in it. Here is the result:

I LIKE THESE MULTI-TALENTED FEMALE ARTISTS. WHICH ARTISTS DO YOU LIKE?

1.Marguerite Duras (filmmaker, writer)
She got 5 votes, or 35%.

2.Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook (filmmaker, writer, graphic artist, installation artist)
+Susan Sontag (filmmaker, writer)
+Yoko Ono (filmmaker, singer, performance artist, conceptual artist)
Each of them got 4 votes, or 28 %.

5.Cindy Sherman (filmmaker, photographer)
+Laurie Anderson (singer, performance artist, violin builder)
+Marina Abramovic (filmmaker, performance artist)
+Rebecca Horn (filmmaker, sculptress)

Each of them got 3 votes, or 21 %.

9. Janice Martin (acrobat, singer, violinist, pianist)
+Joni Mitchell (singer, painter)
+Tracey Moffatt (filmmaker, photographer)
Each of them got 2 votes, or 14%.

12.Doris Doerrie (filmmaker, writer)
+Laura Mulvey (filmmaker, writer)
+Nezaket Ekici (filmmaker, performance artist)
+Nuntana Weerachon (filmmaker, writer)
+Peggy Wauters (sculptress, drawing artist)
Each of them got 1 vote, or 7 %.

17.Miranda July (filmmaker, performance artist)
+Pinaree Sanpitak (painter, sculptress, installation artist)
+Sam Taylor-Wood (filmmaker, photographer)
+Sudsiri Pui-ock (filmmaker, painter)
Each of them got 0 vote.

--I’m very glad that Marguerite Duras won the most votes. Thanks to Zach, I just watched BAXTER, VERA BAXTER (1977, Marguerite Duras, A+). I only understand 10 % of the film, because the film is in French with Spanish subtitles, but I still like it very much. The images in this film are very captivating for me, though in a lesser degree than INDIA SONG, NATHALIE GRANGER, and AGATHA AND HER UNLIMITED READINGS.

The use of soundtrack in this film is very interesting, too. We seem to hear the sound of a local festival intruding into the film space, but we only see the empty beach. We never see the festival. The using of sound of offscreen source reminds me the beggar woman in INDIA SONG, and the festival which occurs offscreen also reminds me of ABIGAIL’S PARTY (1977, Mike Leigh, A+).

I also like what Delphine Seyrig said something about death near the end of this film.

--One thing which I like very much in IN THE POOL OF STILL WATER, THERE IS A YEARNING FOR THE TORRENTIAL FLOW OF THE BIG RIVER (2009, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, A+) is that it reminds me of a small problem in my life. Maybe Araya didn’t intend to cause this effect to the viewer, but this film makes me think about the problem of how to balance between the time I spend with myself and the time I spend communicating with other people, such as playing Facebook, writing this blog, and reading other people’s blogs.

When I spend time with myself, such as watching DVDs alone, reading a magazine alone, listening to CDs alone, I feel very happy. It is a peaceful kind of happiness. Maybe this is like the pool of still water. But sometimes I also want to communicate with other people. When I talk to my friends, I’m happy. It is an exciting kind of happiness.Maybe this is like “yearning for the torrential flow of the big river”.

But sometimes I couldn’t control the balance. Sometimes I spend too much time playing the internet until I don’t get enough sleep. Sometimes I spend too much time thinking about something in the internet until I can’t focus on my work. I think I have to control this kind of yearning.

WISH LIST FOR JANUARY 2009 (FULL VERSION)

A.FILM WISH LIST (most of them from Rotterdam International Film Festival)

1.THE ANNIVERSARY GIFT (2008, Paul Agusta, Indonesia, 72 min)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQTu1BCQFnA
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1347052/
“A young man wakes up chained to metal chair in a room painted a sickening shade of pink and illuminated by a single blinding block of neon lights placed at his right. A razor blade hangs on a string before him, and sharp pink pencils are aimed at his left eye and stomach. He does not know where he is or why he is there. Periodically, a beautiful young woman dressed in floral summer dress enters the room and performs cruel and calculated acts of seemingly senseless torture. Who is she? Why is she doing this? What has he done to deserve this? And most importantly, will he survive?”

2.BE GOOD (SOIS SAGE) (2008, Juliette Garcias, France)

3.BORDER (2009, Harutyun Khachatryan, Armenia)
http://www.volyafilms.nl/main/films/Nakhsho.html
“Through the story of a wounded water buffalo we look at the Armenian-Azerbeidzjanian war with the eyes of the innocent. A universal tale told in a poetical way, against the backdrop of rural Armenia.”

4.THE DEAD GIRL’S FEAST (2009, Meathus Nachtergaele, Mexico)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74hgxdX-jhw
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3567/3449739797_f731bbaa95.jpg

5.EXHAUSTED (2009, Kim Gok, South Korea)
http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/nl/film.aspx?ID=b1de8c5c-1bc7-41e8-b496-2d2f6a0a3c30
http://www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/article.asp?parentID=99083
“Michael Hanake meets the Blair Witch Project in Kim Gok's Exhausted, a vicious kick in the pants to everyone in the audience, all in the name of "style." A man meets a mute woman, and as any reasonable person would do in such a situation, makes her his prostitute. But the pimping is the least of our problems. As we get exhausted by the grainy faux-16mm camerawork, the film gets increasingly deranged.”
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3595/3449739793_ce537399a3_o.jpg

6.FIXER: THE TAKING OF AJMAL NAQSHBANDI (2009, Ian Olds, USA, documentary)
http://www.fixerdoc.com/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1372256/
“In 2007, the Taliban kidnapped 24-year-old Ajmal Naqshbandi and an Italian journalist. Naqshbandi was one of Afghanistan's best "fixers" -- someone hired by foreign journalists to facilitate, translate, and gain access for their stories”

7.GULABI TALKIES (2008, Girish Kasaravalli, India, 122 min)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulabi_Talkies
“The film is set in the late 1990s among the fishing communities around Kundapura, in the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka. The impulsive midwife Gulabi (Umashree) is the protagonist, whose one passion is the cinema. She leads a lonely life in an island inhabited by fisher folk. Her husband Musa (K.G. Krishna Murthy), a small-time fish-selling agent, has deserted her and is living happily with his second wife Kunjipathu and their child Adda.

A family gifts her a television with a satellite dish antenna in gratitude after she attends to a difficult delivery (for which they even had to bodily remove her from a movie theatre). The arrival of the first color TV in her small island village heralds great changes in the sleepy hamlet. The women in the village begin gathering at her house once the men leave for fishing. But a few of them stay away, since Gulabi is one of the few Muslims in the village. Yet others prefer to watch from outside her shack, without entering it.”

8.THE HIDING (2008, Fukui Shozin, Japan, 40 min)
Fukui Shozin directed RUBBER’S LOVER (1996) and 964 PINOCCHIO (1991).

C.ART EXHIBITION WISH LIST

SOPHIE CALLE
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophie_Calle
“Sophie Calle (born 1953) is a French writer, photographer, installation artist, and conceptual artist. Calle's work is distinguished by its use of arbitrary sets of constraints, and evokes the French literary movement of the 1960s known as Oulipo. Her work frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. She is recognized for her detective-like ability to follow strangers and investigate their private lives. Her photographic work often includes panels of text of her own writing.

“In Suite Venitienne (1979), Calle followed a man she met at a party in Paris to Venice, where she disguised herself and followed him around the city, photographing him. Calle’s surveillance of the man, who she identifies only as Henri B., includes photographs accompanied by text”

“Another project, Detective (1980), consisted of Calle being followed for a day by a private detective, who had been hired (at Calle's request) by her mother. Calle proceeded to lead the unwitting detective around parts of Paris that were particularly important for her, thereby reversing the expected position of the observed subject”

MY TEDDY BEARS THINK IT WOULD BE SAFE TO HIDE BEHIND SOME PILLOWS

I don’t have anything to say about the latest political crisis in Thailand, because I am a coward person and I don’t know which information I can trust. I was very scared, though. On Monday, my friend called me to tell me that there was a fighting in my neighborhood and there were also some tires burning and bus burning near my apartment, but I could not go out to witness the event because people around my neighborhood were splashing water on one another at that moment to celebrate Songkran, and I hate this water thing. So I just stayed in my room. I also didn’t go to internet cafe on Monday-Wednesday because I hate the water splashing in Songkran. I just used internet today and found out that there were some shootings between people near my apartment because of political differences on Monday. No one was killed, but there were some casualties. This time the fighting, burning and shooting happened very near my doorstep. And it is a little bit strange because a group of people were shooting at one another and a group of people were splashing water at one another at nearly the same time and in nearly the same place in my neighborhood.

SICKO (A+)

This is my comment in Screenout webboard:
http://zaa.xq28.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=79&start=575

1.SICKO (2007, Michael Moore, USA, documentary, A+)

(THE AGE OF FRECKLES) (1978, Chana Kraprayoon, Thailand, A+/A)

3.GUANTANAMERO (2007, Vicente Penarrocha, UK/Spain, A+/A)

KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN

THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD (2008, Sean McGinly, A+/A)

ชอบ Tea Leoni มากๆเหมือนกันค่ะใน SPANGLISH (2004, James L. Brooks, A+) และ FUN WITH DICK AND JANE (2005, Dean Parisot, A-)

Tarence

N TOOK THE DICE (1971, Alain Robbe-Grillet, A+)

I just noticed that N TOOK THE DICE (1971, Alain Robbe-Grillet, A+) is available in UBU
http://www.ubu.com/film/robbe-grillet_dice.html

Unfortunately, the film is in French with no English Subtitles. However, I still enjoy the images in this film very much. For those who have seen EDEN AND AFTER (1970, Alain Robbe-Grillet, A+++++++++++++++), this is a good chance to revisit the stunning images in EDEN AND AFTER again.

Some scenes in EDEN AND AFTER are not included in N TOOK THE DICE, such as the nude descending the staircase scene. I guess it is because N TOOK THE DICE is made for TV, so some strong images from EDEN AND AFTER have to be left out.

FILM WISH LIST IN 2007 AND 2008

Before I start making my wish lists for 2009, I think I should compile my film wish list of 2007 and 2008, so that it would be easy for me to use it. I excluded some films which appeared in my film wish lists in the past from this film wish list, because these excluded films have been shown in Bangkok or have been available as DVDs in Bangkok, such as LEMON TREE or GLASS LIPS.

C.FAVORITE THAI FILMS
1.KON GIN MIA (1974, Dokdin Ganyamarn, Thailand, A+)
I would have given this film A++++++++++, if the film hadn’t been homophobic.

2.MEAT GRINDER (2009, Tiwa Moeithaisong, Thailand, A+)
The more time passes, the more I seem to like this film. Manotham Theamthiebrut, my favorite critic, wrote an interesting review of this film in the latest issue of Filmax magazine. He wrote about many things I didn’t notice and interpreted some scenes in the way I didn’t think of, such as the ending scene. When I watched the ending scene, I felt very happy because I thought that now the serial killer (or the heroine) can find true happiness, since she reunites with her mother (who is also a serial killer), who can understand the heroine’s pain and can sympathize with the heroine. But Manotham doesn’t think this is a really happy ending for the heroine. He thought that the heroine and her mother may fight with each other, because there is a hint that the mother might have killed her own granddaughter in the giving-birth scene.

Symbolically speaking, I’m not sure what the end of this film means. I guess it may mean that after the breaking up between the radical rural communists (the heroine) and the urban communists (the hero), the urban communists came out of the forest and entered into a normal society. But the radical communists couldn’t. The estrangement the radical communists felt in the society is signified by the scene in which the heroine walks through the market and cannot be a part of this society. Then the return to the mother’s house at the end of the film may mean that the radical communists went to China in early 1980’s. I’m not sure. Anyway, it’s just FUN guessing about the meaning of this film. I’m not serious about it.

R.GUILTY PLEASURES
SEVEN POUNDS (2008, Gabriele Muccino, A+)
I cried at the end of this film. If the film ends in a different way, such as by making the heroine pregnant with the dead hero, I would have given this film not more than B+. But letting the heroine live a life of her own and be able to fall in love with any new guys who come into her life is a kind of selfless action that really touches my heart. This kind of thing—let someone you love love someone else—is also the reason why I worship ALWAYS (1989, Steven Spielberg, A++++++++++).

Actually the film doesn’t say that Emily Posa (Rosario Dawson) will fall in love with Ezra Turner (Woody Harrelson), but the film also doesn’t deny the possibility that it can happen. And that’s enough for me to start imagining the lives of these two characters after the film ends. Maybe I just love romantic films with interracial relationships, such as GUESS WHO (2005, Kevin Rodney Sullivan) and CORRINA CORRINA (1994, Jessie Nelson).
