INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE HILLS HAVE EYES

This is my comment in a friend’s blog:

THE HILL HAVE EYES (2006, Alexandre Aja, A) เพราะว่าช่วงต้นๆของอินเดียน่าโจนส์ พูดถึงการทดลองระเบิดนิวเคลียร์ในทศวรรษ 1950 ก็เลยทำให้นึกถึงหนังเรื่อง THE HILLS HAVE EYES ที่พูดถึงผลกระทบจากการทดลองนิวเคลียร์อันนั้น ดูไปดูมา แล้วนึกว่า INDIANA JONES 4 = PREQUEL OF “THE HILLS HAVE EYES”

I’m not sure why I don’t much enjoy INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008, Steven Spielberg, B+). I guess it is because I can’t feel involved in the relationship between father-mother-son in this film.

However, the story about the nuclear test in this film reminds me of THE HILLS HAVE EYES (2006, Alexandre Aja, A), a film which I much prefer to INDIANA JONES 4. I really feel involved with the family in THE HILLS HAVE EYES. The “family” in INDIANA JONES 4 is so far from my real life. But that’s not the problem of the film, which I think is intended for young audience, not for me. On the other hand, the “family” in THE HILLS HAVE EYES is not so far from my real life.

(I really write in a broken English. But I want to.)

i have the reason why i dont like the family element in Indiana JOnes.

I wanna write here but not in published media cause i may be attacked by Indy fans. haha.

I think Indiana Jones franchise in the product of colonialism from 1980s in America. As we know, America attacked Germany and other communist states with the film medium. They create the James-Bonds-like character with a cowboy costumes and a sense of fun. They sent this character around the world to hunt for other country treasure and take it back to America.

But today is 2008 and these are the post-colonial era and these are the times that Bush is neo Hitler. How can Indiana Jones still survive in these period?

The answer is they (the filmmaker) must create the superfun version of Indie and สร้างความชอบธรรม (what is this word in english?) by give a sense of a family to make Indy looks more charm.

Another point that I hate this movie is that they never show that Indie kills the other man. But they show that Cate Blanchett and her Russian soldiers are so brutel by killing all the maya people (in the cave sequence).

Another point I hate the family element in this film is that…. It look likes all the big bosses behind this movie cannot accept that THEY ARE THE GRANDFATHERS NOW. So they show that Harrison Ford, who like them, is 65 years by now, is old enough to be a…Father. It’s so absurd.

Thank you everybody for your comments. I’m sorry I have no opinion on the political aspects of this film, but your comments give me some knowledge.

As always, I can offer only my feelings for the film. I hate Indiana Jones when he began to “order” Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) to study after he had realized that Mutt was his son. Many audience laugh in this scene, but I hate this kind of parental behavior and cannot laugh.

Compared to other recent films about treasure hunters, I think I like INDIANA JONES 4 as much as NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS (2007, Jon Turteltaub) and a little bit more than LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE (2003, Jan de Bont). But I think I much prefer FOOL’S GOLD (2008, Andy Tennant, A) to INDIANA JONES 4. Maybe it is because FOOL’S GOLD is a mix between remarriage comedy and adventure, and because the characters in FOOL’S GOLD are the ones I can relate to more easily.

What I can’t understand is why I automatically hate the family in INDIANA JONES 4, but find the old-fashioned family in SPEED RACER (2008, Andy + Larry Wachowski, A+/A) acceptable. Is it because of the casting of Susan Sarandon? Or is it because of the different context in each film?
