POLITICALLY LAWYER AND NARRATIVE CINEMA (2009, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, A++++++++++)

NEW THAI FILMS I SAW ON JULY 17, 2009

1.POLITICALLY LAWYER AND NARRATIVE CINEMA (Chaloemkiat Saeyong, 27 min, A+++++++++++++++)

ฆาตรกรรมสวาท ประหลาดน่านฟ้า ทำให้คนหายตัวไป/เฉลิมเกียรติ แซ่หย่อง/27.00

I'm not sure if the official English title of this film is spelled "POLTICALLY LAWYER…" or "POLITICAL LAWYER…", but I think I saw the words POLITICALLY LAWYER… in the beginning of this film. If I remember it correctly and the actual title is POLITICALLY LAWYER…, I also wonder if the grammatical error is intentional or not, because this film clearly plays with "languages" in its story.

The Thai title of this film can be literally translated as PASSIONATE MURDER, CURIOUS AIRSPACE, MAKING PEOPLE DISAPPEAR.

This film is surely one of my most favorite films of this year.

2.DROWN (Pittaya Weerasakwong, animation, 5 min, A+)

5.HAPPY ENDING (Isara Googiattipoom, 9 min, A+/A)

6.STARTING (Surasen Granto, 15 min, A-)
จุดเริ่มต้น/สุรเสน กรานโต/15.00

7.MIND CONTROL (Sutham Jeerasilp, 12 min, B+)
จิตไร้สำนึก/สุธรรม จีระศิลป์/12.00

The reasons why I love POLITICALLY LAWYER AND NARRATIVE CINEMA include:

1.Its opening scene, which shows numbers running on something like a TV screen. This opening scene makes me think about how TV news in Thailand is always distorted.

2.In an early scene, there is a text saying that the director likes to observe nature, but the director lets us watch some mechanical cranes moving for a long time, instead of watching nature like in PERU TIME (Chaloemkiat Saeyong, A+++++).

3.The moving crane is shown again near the end of the film, but this time the scene is in the late evening, not in daytime like in the beginning of the film. We watch the crane continue moving while the light is fading away from the scene. This scene, together with the story and the images which come before that scene, made me feel so sad that I cried, though I'm not sure why and I think this kind of feelings may not be the director's intention.

4. A part of the story in this film is about Somchai Neelaphaijit, a Thai lawyer whose disappearance is still not resolved today. I think it's good that a filmmaker still remembers him, though Somchai disappeared five years ago.

5.Other parts of this film make me think about some other things. I guess this film is not only about Somchai's case.

6.A character is killed in this film to protect the secrecy of something. I think this part of the story is interesting. A character in this film is called Sillamanee, which I think is very interesting, too.

7.If I remember it correctly, other characters in the film gossip about an adulterous affair, the disappearance, or the murder. I think this kind of gossiping is interesting.

8.Near the end of the film, a text asks the viewers to piece together the snippets of information scattered all through the film. I think this is very interesting, and reminds me of the fact that we may never know the truth about something. We can only piece together the official lies, the rumors, the gossip, the censored news, the distorted news, etc, which may never lead us to the truth.

9.If I remember it correctly, someone in the film says something like WHOEVER SPEAKS THE TRUTH SHALL DIE, or something like that.

10.Characters in this film question if films can really show the truth.

11.This film (unintentionally?) makes me think about the good side and the bad side of "make-believe". In an early scene, this film asks us to imagine that the following scenes take place in an airport, though these scenes actually take place in a university building. This kind of "imagination" is very funny, and reminds me of THE LIVING WORLD (2003, Eugene Green, A+++++++++++++++), which also lets the viewers use this kind of imagination. In THE LIVING WORLD, we see a dog, but the characters call it a lion, or something like that. Then we start to regard it in our minds as "a lion character", though we see a dog. This kind of technique shows us "the power of words", which can transform something into another thing in our minds.

Near the end of POLITICALLY LAWYER AND NARRATIVE CINEMA, a text asks us again to imagine that the following scenes take place in an airport, though this time the text seems to be redundant. It seems to lose its magic, or its power. It seems to be too much. It seems to arouse the viewers' resistance, instead of the viewers' willingness to obey what the text says. This thing makes me think about the bad side of "make-believe", especially when we are forced repeatedly to perceive something, or some people, as other things or as other people or as something higher than they really are. This may not be the director's intention. It is just an idea I accidentally think about after I saw this film.

12.This film plays with many elements of cinema, including subtitles, spoken languages, spoilers, editing, voiceovers, texts, role playing, soundtrack, mise-en-scene, etc.

BLOOD CANNOT BE CHANGED (2009, Wannasak Sirilar, A+++++)

BLOOD CANNOT BE CHANGED (เพื่อนสาวผีดิบ) (2009, Wannasak Sirilar, stage play, A+++++) is staged at Makhampom Studio until this Friday. It is strongly atmospheric and lyrically frightening. Sumontha Suanpolrat's acting is as sacred as Maria Falconetti in THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928, Carl Dryer).

NEW THAI FILMS I SAW ON JULY 12, 2009

2.PERU TIME (Chaloemkiat Saeyong, experimental, 18 min, A+)
กู่ก้องบอกรักนิรันดร/เฉลิมเกียรติ แซ่หย่อง/18.00

When I saw this film, I thought I experienced the world through the feelings of some frogs, some plants, or some aliens who may come to visit the earth to make strange lines in vast fields like the Nazca lines in Peru. In this film, there is a strange light in the darkness, but I don’t know what it is. Does it come from aliens? Does it come from ghosts? Does it come from a person who wants to catch some frogs to eat? The film lets me experience the world and its time in the way I like, and also lets me imagine stories the way I like. Mesmerizing. You either love it or hate it. I love it. I also love the beginning of this film very much, because the beginning of this film tells us straightforwardly that we will experience time abnormally. Charloemkiat Saeyong is a co-director of REVERSE (2007, 10 min, A+), which is a lovely weird sci-fi film about a man who tries to save the world by searching for the Book of Sufficiency on the Taksine planet.

NO VALID MATTERS AT ART CENTER CHULA

This is a news release from Art Center Chula:

No Valid Matters
By Assoc Prof Kade Javanalikikorn

At The Art Center, 7th Fl, Center of Academic Resources (Central Library), Chulalongkorn University
July 17 - August 22, 2009
Opening reception: Thursday July 23, 2009, 6-8pm

Artist's Statement
Most art viewers tend to have questions about abstract paintings regarding their meanings because what they see usually does not make sense to them. On the other hand, when they look at paintings that “make sense” to them, such as a portrait or a landscape, they seem to be satisfied with what they see and do not seem to care about the meaning of the painting.

For me, both kinds of paintings do not communicate with meaning but rather with emotions and feelings. It’s not necessary for viewers to “understand” or look for meanings; they simply need to get the mood and the feeling of the paining. The feelings that occur in the viewers obviously differ from person to person depending on personal background and experiences. Viewers who come from the same social background or experiences may feel similarly when looking at a painting. Therefore both kinds of paintings are examples of art that does not intend to convey meanings.

Some abstract paintings that most people think they do not understand and cannot make sense of, are not created to be understood; they do not offer meanings, they do not provide valid matters and do not offer anything for the viewer to seek. These paintings convey only emotions and feelings.

I want to show differences and similarities between abstract paintings which do not show any concrete things and paintings of things that we know and are familiar with. I want to show that both kinds of paintings can be perceived through moods, emotions and feelings, through the heart, without the need for meaning.

SOCIAL FUNDAMENTALISM STUDIES (Suebsang Sangwachirapiban + Powarong Boonchoui, A+++++)

I just went to see the exhibition TRUELIES (A) at Art Center Chula yesterday. I like the animation SOCIAL FUNDAMENTALISM STUDIES (2009, Suebsang Sangwachirapiban + Powarong Boonchoui, A+) very much. It is very beautiful and thought-provoking.

The information below is from an e-mail I received from Art Center Chula a few weeks ago:

"Sawasdee krub,

On Friday June 12, The Art Center had an opening reception for the "TRUELIES" group exhibition, which features works of various mediums by five artists, who are mostly Chula people. The reception received a larger group of visitors than other shows. A lot of them were students who came to see what their art (and political science) teachers have come up with as comments on and solutions to all the crises Thailand is facing.

"TRUELIES" will run until July 11. And of course, there will be an artists' talk by the five artists, who, in this case, have been assigned a role of a curator and a critic as well. Once the date and time are settled, I'll be emailing you again.

Meanwhile, I have a review by Narongsak Nilkhet (one of the young art critics from the Brand New 2009 project) as some info accompanying this exhibition.

Smiling with tears

Truths and lies aren’t always easy to identify. With a continuous, free-flowing movement of consumerism and globalisation, individuals are free to choose whatever product they want to buy and whichever information they want to receive. Yet, no one knows for sure if the facts they have in hand come with any hidden agendas. Just like what we say in Thai, one knows the face, but not the heart. Today, as Thai society is faced with crises of all sorts, there’s a phenomenon where certain people come out to propagate their ideologies to earn public trust and exploit this opportunity for their own gain. Sound judgement is an important tool for living in today’s society.

These difficulties and complexities are what everybody in society has been talking about. They are described and portrayed in different formats. ‘TRUELIES’ is another attempt to reflect the turmoil Thailand is going through and brainstorm for new solutions. Not only have all the five artists in this show shed light on these complex issues, but also added another layer of complexity to the exhibition. Each artist has been assigned a role of a curator as well as a critic.

‘Love is Blind’, video art by Top Changtrakul, tells a love story between a foreign man and a Thai woman who are having a romantic dinner at a restaurant by the river. As the waiter hands them the menus, the couple start their sweet, yet emotionless conversation. The video alludes to the social value that sees rural girls with little education wanting to take a shortcut to wealth by having a foreign husband. This trend comes from the fact that Thai women who are married to a foreigner tend to have a luxury life, receiving money from their husbands. When there are successful examples to see, others follow suit in hope of having the same fate. But whether marrying a foreign man will make them happy, that’s another story.

‘Cook Book’, an acrylic on canvas by Sujin Wattanawongchai, has multi-coloured rectangular stripes painted on the four canvases, reminiscent of national flags. Written on them are large-scale words – MONEY, POWER, POLITICS, GOLD, OIL and DRUG, all as colourful as their backgrounds. These words describe problems in Thai society today. On them is another layer of Thai phrases, equally gaudy, splattered across the canvases. They include: work for 1,500 and undress for 5,000; work hard for a comfortable life; a fighter; meet you when my husband doesn’t notice; know the face, not the heart; please don’t bullshit; dump me and you’ll be dead; not handsome but hot; etc. These are what we often found at the back of big trucks, just for the pleasure of other drivers following behind. They represent the livelihoods of people in the lower class as well as how they can always find some fun out of their lives. The bright colours of this work speak about a society of consumerism. The large English words point out the problems the society is facing. And the Thai phrases show the fun-loving, good nature of Thais. No matter how big the problems in their lives are, they fight smilingly as if things weren’t too bad.

The interactive installation “Phaa Paa (Well Wishes) to Help the Country” by Apichart Pholprasert is inspired by the Thai Phaa Paa Sa Mak Kee tradition, creating an atmosphere of a temple fair with Thai-style decorations. Apichart’s work has strings of small white flags hanging down from the ceiling to be tied with the Phaa Paa trees on the floor, which contain well wishes for Thailand. On one nearby wall is a map where The Golden Axe [referring to the shape of the country] is painted on by black colour. On the map, there are also gold leaves and holy threads. Not so far from the tree are a table and a chair where visitors can sit down to write well wishes for Thailand. And they’re definitely encouraged to do so.

The “Social Fundamentalism Studies” video art by Suebsang Sangwachirapiban and Powarong Boonchoui consists of old maps from different periods accompanied by Western classical music. The maps show how powerful nations fight for territories and have animals symbolic of these countries running around the globe. It’s obvious that the lines dividing countries changed throughout the time. They’re simply human creations. There’s also an inkjet picture by Suebsang entitled “Inter Under Condition”, depicting a spiral galaxy. In the middle is a bright shining star where a line of words, such as Inter Under Powerfulness, Inter Under Diplomatic, Inter Under Passion, spirals out of the center. The work wants to talk about how human beings are under these conditions that they’ve created themselves, playing the role of God creating things on earth and in the universe.

“Truthlies”, video art by Jiraporn Laocharoenwong, the only female artist is this show, features interviews with common people, including a motorcycle taxi guy, a shoe repairer, a street vendor, a security guard, a maid, a school student and a university student. They give their opinions on several issues related to their lives, such as politics and the economy. These are the people who are the majority of the country, but their voices are rarely heard or recognised. In this work, many interviewees are rather playful in their answers, which we don’t know if they come up with these ideas themselves or if they’re simply saying things they have listened from the media.

What the five artists are attempting to do is offer solutions to the chaos today’s society is facing. They hope to make this country a better, happier place, something we all want. Looking at the bright side, it’s obvious that the Thai people have become more alert to what’s going on around them, which undeniably affects their livelihoods. Problems come with pain and pain can be a good reminder that we all should re-examine the situation we’re in, learn from it and prevent it from happening again in the future.

B.EXPERIMENTAL FILM/VIDEO ART WISH LIST
(from Artforum magazine)

1.THE ABANDONED SHABONO (1976, Juan Downey, Chile, 27 min)
http://www.artinfo.com/galleryguide/19670/6216/115592/nohra-haime-new-york/exhibition/juan-downey-meditation-drawings/press_release/

" In pursuit of the last primitive tribe of the Americas, Juan Downey’s ‘The Abandoned Shabono’ focuses on the Amazon Rain Forest. The shabono is the circular communal dwelling built by the Yanomami Indians. The artist presents the building as a metaphor for the social structure and spiritual environment of an ecologically sound culture that is threatened by advancing civilization. "

2.ABOVE ALL I'M AN ART LOVER (2009, Christian Jankowski)
http://www.regenprojects.com/exhibitions/2009_1_christian-jankowski/pressrelease/

" Regen Projects is pleased to present Above All I'm an Art Lover, an exhibition of work by German artist Christian Jankowski. Conceptually based, his projects blur the boundaries between fiction and reality, often involving a dialogue with a specific social environment. Defying conventional notions of media and performance, Jankowski's past collaborators include magicians, fortunetellers and Customs guards. Exploring the position of the artist, he welcomes what is often a spontaneous or unexpected development as a result of his collaborations. Consequently, participants take on an active role in the work becoming contributors as opposed to subjects, and their association ultimately dictates the development of the work. Combining fictional situations with social interactions, Jankowski is able to create surprising and humorous intersections between popular culture, theatricality and the question of authorship. Employing the media of film and television, he is able to explore the art world and its discourse.

Jankowski's earnest engagement of his medium enables him to recapture art's mystery. His use of a circular mode of production presents a critique of the contemporary relationship between artist and viewer and attempts to break down the speeded-up forms of communication which have worsened our contemporary alienation. In addition, he embeds a strong sense of a human presence in his work through a transformative use of collaboration, humor, the subjective voice and the somewhat naïve manner in which he approaches technology.

(Jeff Fleming, "Christian Jankowski: The Big Wow," in Christian Jankowski: Everything Fell Together. Des Moines, Iowa: Des Moines Art Center, 2005. p. 13) "

3.Artur Zmijewski's videos from Poland
http://www.culture.pl/en/culture/artykuly/os_zmijewski_artur
" Artur Zmijewski is a radical artist, realising extreme artistic concepts. In his works, in a nearly obsessive manner he thematises the human body perceived in the context of its physicality, its base biological functions. This perspective imposes questions about the relationship between the body, susceptible to illness and decay, and the sphere of human mind and spirit. What the artist finds most interesting, are cases, where heavy bodily dysfunction and severe disease foreclose any possibility of participation in social life and even destroy the mind. At the same time, he admits, those defects create a kind of otherness, seductive and much more telling than anything we consider normal. And this is Zmijewski at his most poignant. "

6.A LIFE OF ERRORS (2006, Nicholas and Sheila Pye)
http://www.angellgallery.com/exhibitions/?detail=35
" The Pyes' oeuvre is an exploration of the magnetic attraction of opposites, and a visual depiction of the struggle to retain one's sense of self in a close relationship with another person. Compelled beyond reason, the figures in the film wage a war with one another—grabbing tokens of the other’s person (locks of hair are slyly snipped) and setting traps. Perhaps most unsettling of all, the attacks are executed consensually. A blindfolded Nick allows Sheila to lead him around and over sharp and broken objects as the soles of his feet are cut. In a parallel, climatic scene, Sheila is guided by Nick into a circle defined by a fuse. She, masked and docile, jumps rope as he sets the ring on fire. The flames, her activity, and (metaphorically) the violent passion that hangs over the entire scenario consume all the oxygen in the small space, causing Sheila to collapse. Nick meets his own fate when he delivers Sheila’s lifeless body to her bed only to fall over a rope that she has rigged to trip him. "

7.LOUDLY, DEATH UNTIES (2007, Nicholas and Sheila Pye, 11 min)
http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/an-excerpt-from-nicholas-and-sheila-pyes-louly-death-unties/
" A banshee girl burrows her way into the back room of a couple’s home, releasing foreboding wails in this expressive and captivating experimental short. When one of the lovers begins succumbing to mysterious forces, it seems the banshee’s prophecy will be inevitably fulfill. "

8.LOVELY ANDREA (2007, Hito Steyerl, 30 min)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRQ8_t1s8yk
http://www.sixpackfilm.com/catalogue.php?oid=1621&lang=en

"If all pictures became current, in that they pass by and in doing so, are connectable with one another, whether elegantly or obscenely, through translation or association—how would it be possible to fasten down a picture? Hito Steyerl’s light-hearted picture translations are about fastening things in an elegant-obscene way: In Tokyo she is looking for a photo series that she posed for in 1987 as a “rope bondage” model. While making inquiries with experts and authorities in the bondage arts (which are mainly marketed online nowadays), she found what she was looking for in a magazine archive. The cinematic tension is extremely high just now says the translator while Steyerl looks through photos of herself from her days as a film student. Something that fastens, but no biographical final revelation; instead, the discovered photographs fall into the slipstream of an informally networked archive of a life with bondage as conveyed by the media—in the sense that the master and slave games, as they’re called, have become entirely normal."

9.NACH SPANDAU (2008, Claire Hooper, 53 min)
http://www.frieze.com/shows/review/claire_hooper
" Nach Spandau (2008), a new film by Claire Hooper, is a demonstration of an artist well versed in the language, techniques and motifs of cinema. While the work comes, at times, dangerously close to a staid retread of familiar precedents, Hooper manages to engage for the film’s entire 52-minutes, as she documents one of Berlin’s most architecturally attractive Metro lines: the U7. Spanning from the eponymous terminal to the city’s south-eastern fringes, the line was designed between 1971 and 1984 by engineer Rainer G. Rummier and is a mix of decorative Modernist stylings and run-down shopping kiosks. Hooper impressionistically documents each station with a series of collaged, forensically slow pans. The film isn’t narrated, the only sounds being the occasional rumble of a passing train or the crackle of a PA announcement "

10.THE PAPER WALL (2004, Nicholas and Sheila Pye)
http://videomedeja.org/en/nicholas-and-sheila-pye

" Nick and Sheila Pye primarily work with video and photography, their projects explore themes of intimacy and emotional interdependence. In their ten-minute video titled 'The Paper Wall', a thin division stands between two characters in separate bedrooms. The two protagonists - played by the artists – use nonverbal communication of fear and desire. They grow increasingly dependant on one another while performing a series of choreographed gestures that include basic bodily functions such as breathing and urinating. The silent characters in the Pyes' moody, erotic video open the work to several potential narratives "

11.ROOFTOP ROUTINE (2007-2008, Christian Jankowski)
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=32246520673

12.SEX IS SENTIMENTAL (2009, Erik van Lieshout, 21 min)
http://www.artnet.com/magazineus/reviews/robinson/robinson2-6-09.asp

" Using a makeshift animation table and narrating the action as he goes, Van Lieshout combines drawings, collage, photographs, scrawled titles and live action into a cascade of funky imagery seemingly without style or technical guile. Artless and insouciant, the narrative nevertheless flows along with considerable verve and wit, propelled almost entirely by the force of the artist’s own charming personality. "

13.UNIVERSAL CITIZEN (1986, Peter Thompson, 23 min)
http://www.jonathanrosenbaum.com/?p=7740

14.UP! (2007, Erik van Lieshout)
http://www.frieze.com/issue/review/erik_van_lieshout
" For ‘UP!’ (2005) Van Lieshout underwent therapy, focusing on his relationship with his mother. His lofty goal was to learn tolerance and thus overcome personal crisis. Van Lieshout concludes that he is, like his mother, unable to listen. The problem is that he constantly needs to talk. But rather than being simply a mouthpiece for himself, the work forms the framework for a plural narrative structure: for his own actions and utterances, in direct speech to his mother and his therapist and as a commentary on the film we are watching. ‘I wanna be in control, on top, in control’, the artist notes soberly, referring to his ‘ego’, over which he clearly loses control on a regular basis "

15.WHY WE MEN LOVE TECHNOLOGY THAT MUCH (1985, Stefaan Decostere, 65 min)
http://www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com/professionals/programme/public-programme-schedule/film.aspx?ID=05fe7a5e-bea2-4dfe-83c2-8f8a6375da34
" The documentary Why We Men Love Technology That Much was made in 1985 to analyze the close relation between war and technology. The video shows how war, speed and technology organize and reorganize reality, until only filtered reality remains. The artists - Klaus vom Bruch in video and Jack Goldstein in paint and sound - propose their personal artistic versions of it.Since then, no radical change has occurred in the relation between war and technology. It has only became more intensified. Technology brings the logic and reality of war even closer into our daily lives. Nowadays we all are actively involved with media. Digitisation, virtualisation and automation are our major interactions on a massive scale with technology. They guideline the basic moves possible in the playing field here. "

FAVORITE THINGS IN MAY 2009

FAVORITE THINGS IN MAY 2009

A.FAVORITE FILMS

1. DEUX (2002, Werner Schroeter, Germany, A+)

2. THE HORSEMEN (2008, Jonas Akerlund, A+)
As for now, I don't think this is a good film at all. But I have to give it A+ and rank it as my second most favorite film of May because I can't deny the power the film has over me. After I saw this film on May 9, I gave it only A-. I don't think the film, which is produced by Michael Bay, is exciting at all. It has almost no suspense. I don't even like the ending. The killer hates his father because his father has never come into his room for two years. I think it is ridiculous. My friends and I would love and cherish a father like this. What we hate is the father or mother who came into our room and pry into our belongings. The ending of the film seems to support nosy parents, which is something I can't agree with.

But during the past two months after I saw this film, I have found that there are two characters in this film whom I can't stop thinking about, whom I really care about. They are Kristen (Zhang Ziyi) and Corey (Patrick Fugit). That doesn't mean I agree with what they do. It just means that I just want to hug them, console them, and say to them, "I understand your pain.” There are no other characters I have seen lately which make me want to do this. Even characters in truly great films such as THE FEAST and CAPTAIN AHAB don't make me feel like this.

I saw the Thai-censored version of this film. The rumour says that this censored version is 20 minutes shorter than the uncut version. I don't know if I would like this film more or less if I have seen the uncut version. I hate gore. So maybe I will like this film less if I have seen the full version. Maybe if I have seen the full cruelty of Kristen and Corey, I may stop wanting to hug and console them.

After I saw THE HORSEMEN, I have three wishes:

1.Someone should make a film about Kristen (Zhang Ziyi) and treats this character as well as MONSTER (2003, Patty Jenkins, A+) treats Aileen Wuornos.

2. Someone should make a film about Corey (Patrick Fugit) and treats this character as well as MONSTER (2003, Patty Jenkins, A+) treats Aileen Wuornos.

3.Someone should make a film about the meeting in prison between Kristen and Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire) from LA CEREMONIE (1995, Claude Chabrol, A+).

I also like a comment about this film in imdb very much. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892767/usercomments?start=10

" But its when the movie is over and you take a breather and you think about what you just saw....That's when you realize this film wasn't so much about the physical torment and pain we humans cause each other(in this movie it's a lot!),as much as it tells us what can happen when we get mentally damaged. When we get abandoned. When we get manipulated, get misunderstood, get lost"

In a way, I think THE HORSEMEN is a perfect antidote to such films as DEPARTURES (2008, Yojiro Takita, A-), THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE (2008, Remi Bezancon, A-), or FIREFLIES IN THE GARDEN (2008, Dennis Lee, A-/B+), which present family problems in a way which doesn't satisfy me.

So, I repeat it again. I don't think THE HORSEMEN is a good film, but I love this film, because I can't stop thinking about the pain of Kristen and Corey.

3.RULE # 1 (2008, Kelvin Tong, Hong Kong/Singapore, A+)

I think this film presents the topic of extrajudicial killings in a very interesting way. In the opening scene of this film, the viewers can't distinguish the cop from the criminal. So the opening scene of this film tells the viewers indirectly that this film is not just a ghost story, but this film is about cops turning into criminals.

The title of this film is very intriguing, too. In the film, the rule number one in the hero's police department states that the police must LIE to the public that there are no ghosts. So the title of this film implies that the real subject of the film is about the police's lying to the public.

In a later scene in the film, the hero faces policemen from another department. The hero must tell them what the rule number one for general policemen is. And the rule number one for general policemen is about how policemen can use gun when confronting criminals. So the title of this film also implies that the real subject of this film is about extrajudicial killings, too.

4.WINGED CREATURES (2008, Rowan Woods, A+)

I love the characters in this film very much. They are unlikeable, but I really like them, especially the character played by Kate Beckinsale. The character played by Dakota Fanning somehow reminds me of the former US government, because this character, who may be pseudo-religious, faces a terrible event (like 9/11), but she uses this terrible event for her own gain, and order hers friend (whose brother is a war veteran/victim, so this friend character may represent the USA military) to lie about this event for her own gain. This friend character becomes mute, like some soldiers who saw the terrible things in war but don't talk about them for the government's sake.

5. HEARTBREAK LIBRARY (2008, Jeong-kwon Kim, A+/A)

B.FAVORITE THAI FILMS

1.BODILY FLUID IS REVOLUTIONARY (2009, Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, A+)
