I have been to Chiang Rai only once in my life—in late 1994. I really love the weather there in winter. It was around 8 degrees celcius at night in Chiang Rai at that time. I felt like I was in heaven. I love cold weather. I’m fed up with the 38 degrees celcius here in Bangkok. In my next life, I wish I will be born in the tundra or taiga area.
I have been to Chiang Mai only three times. I enjoyed it a lot as a tourist.
Your comment inspired me to make a list of my favorite films about the northern part of Thailand. Here is the result:

--Talking about the northern part of Thailand reminds me of a recent art exhibition. It’s the painting exhibition of Pornchai Jaima at Galerie N in Bangkok. เคยขึ้นเหนือ แค่ 2 ครั้งในชีวิต ครั้งแรกคือตอนปัจฉิมนิเทศ ม.6 ไปเชียงใหม่ เป็นทริปที่มีความสุขมากเลยครับ ถ่ายรูปไปเยอะมาก ประมาณ 3 ม้วน รูปพวกนี้เอามาดูทีไรก็น้ำตาซึมทุกที จำได้ว่าพอกลับมาจากทริปก็เศร้ามากเพราะหลังจากนั้นจะมีแต่เหตุการณ์แย่ๆ เช่น ต้องไปค่ายเข่าชนไก่ (ตอนไปผมทะเลาะกับแฟนด้วย เลยยิ่งเครียด), ต้องจากลากับเพื่อนๆ, ต้องเอนท์ทรานซ์ (ผมจะสบายกว่าเพื่อนหน่อย เพราะตอนนั้นสอบตรงติดแล้ว)
ส่วนครั้งที่สอง ก็เมื่อปลายปีก่อน ที่ไปทริปเหนือกับไบโอสโคปนั่นแหละครับ อันนี้ก็สนุกดี หนาวมากกกก ร่าเริงสุดๆ และมันส์มากๆ ตอนไปช็อปปิ้งที่แม่สายครับ (ดิฉันอึ้งมากที่มีบ็อกเซ็ตรวมหนังอิงมาร์ เบิร์กแมน 58 เรื่อง อะไรแบบนี้ แล้วราคาถูกสุดๆ)
เพิ่งไปดูงานที่ Galerie N วันนี้เอง ตอนแรกคิดว่าตัวเองจะไม่ชอบ แต่ปรากฏว่าชอบแฮะ เพราะงานมันไม่ให้อารมณ์เคร่งขรึม หรือ traditional มากเท่าไร ภาพมันดูมีชีวิตชีวา น่ารัก และมี gimmick อะไรอยู่เยอะมาก ที่สำคัญภาพมันดูมี movement ด้วย
The only film I've seen shot in Chiang Mai was Vampires: The Turning. Every time I saw the Iron Bridge, I would think of that film.
By the way, there is a nice painting gallery on Chareon Rat road if you ever go there again.
Peter, thank you very very much for your mentioning of the film VAMPIRES: THE TURNING (2005, Marty Weiss). I saw a part of this film from a cable TV a few years ago. I can’t remember much of it. I only remember that Dom Hetrakul, whose look I like very much, stars in this film. Your mentioning of this film made me check its information in imdb.com, and I found some information which is very useful for me. Nophand Boonyai stars in this film !!!!!! My friends and I are very crazy for Nophand Boonyai now. I think he is one of the most interesting Thai stage play directors/performers this year. I wouldn’t have known that he stars in VAMPIRES: THE TURNING, if you hadn’t mentioned this film. Now my friends and I have to add VAMPIRES: THE TURNING into our DVD wish list. I don’t care if the film is good or not. I just want to watch Nophand Boonyai and Dom Hetrakul. :-) However, I think it’s rather unfortunate that film industry doesn’t have a proper place for such a talented artist as Nophand Boonyai. It seems nowadays many Thai artists/performers can only express their real talents in stage plays, not in films.

วันที่พี่ไป GALERIE N ประทับใจกับพนักงานมากๆ เพราะพนักงานเข้ามาพูดอธิบายลักษณะเด่นๆของภาพในแกลเลอรี่ พี่ฟังพนักงานที่แกลเลอรี่แห่งนี้แล้วได้ความรู้กลับไปเยอะมากๆ แถมพนักงานยังขึ้นไปเปิดแอร์ที่ชั้นสองให้ด้วย รู้สึกว่าพนักงานที่นี่ตั้งใจทำงาน+ต้อนรับผู้มาชมแกลเลอรี่มากๆ
