--Favorite quote from LE PROCÈS DE BOBIGNY:

Lawyer (Anouk Grinberg) advises to her client (Sandrine Bonnaire): "You uphold your actions and blame the law. You deny any wrongdoing and say you're the victim of a criminal law. THE LAW MUST BE ACCUSED. And the case turned into a public event. We need to rally public opinion to our side. Historically, it's the only way to achieve progress. A groundswell of public sympathy ties the judge's hands."

A doctor testifies in the court: "There is the law of God and the law of Man, and certain actions can only be decided in that private place we call our conscience."

--I worship the content in AGORA, but I think the film is too emotionally manipulative. I wish the film was as emotionally restrained as SOPHIE SCHOLL: THE FINAL DAYS (2005, Marc Rothemund, A++++++++++).

--Favorite quote from AGORA:
Hypatia: " Synesius, you don't question what you believe, or cannot. I must. "

--Favorite quotes from SOPHIE SCHOLL: THE FINAL DAYS:

Robert Scholl: THERE IS A HIGHER JUSTICE!

Hans Scholl: YOU MAY HANG US TODAY, BUT YOU WILL BE HANGED TOMORROW.

Talking about films about ancient Greek/Roman time, my wish list includes ELECTRA, MY LOVE (1974, Miklós Jancsó), which deals with the struggle of a woman against the tyranny of Aegisthos:
http://www.kinoeye.org/03/03/hames03.php

" You're happy. I want pain.
You prefer a life of lies to speaking the truth once.
You've kissed the killer's feet. Where has it got you?
You've lied the stars down. Where has it got you?
You bought happiness and got terror. Where has it got you?
You only got fear. Tell me, was it worth it?"

I think the whole film is available in Youtube.

Ashraf Barhom plays the villain in AGORA. He doesn't look good in AGORA, because his role requires him to be like that. But I think he looks good in THE SYRIAN BRIDE (2004, Eran Riklis).

By the way, I think it is interesting that the two heroines of AGORA and POPE JOAN (2009, Sönke Wortmann, A+) do not die as gruesomely as some legends say. Is it because the filmmakers are afraid to make a feel-bad film? Is it because the filmmakers love their characters too much? Would it be better if the filmmaker tells the audience about the cruel legends by using texts at the end of the film, so that the audience will not forget how mankind were evil, barbarous, biased, prejudiced, and unjust? This is a dilemma for me. I think the endings of AGORA and POPE JOAN are fine, but I think it might have been more powerful if both films tell the audience by using texts at the end of the film about the cruel things which may have happened in the past.

The death of Hypatia in Wikipedia:

" they completely stripped her, and then murdered her by scraping her skin off with tiles and bits of shell. After tearing her body in pieces, they took her mangled limbs to a place called Cinaron, and there burnt them."

The death of Pope Joan in Wikipedia:

" One day, while mounting a horse, she gave birth to a child. Immediately, by Roman justice, she was bound by the feet to a horse's tail and dragged and stoned by the people for half a league, and where she died, there she was buried"
