IRISH AND THAI EXPERIMENTAL FILMS AT THAMMASAT LIBRARY

Two great experimental films will be screened at Thammasat University Library, Ta Prachan campus, on Sunday, February 23, 2014.

HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND (2013, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, 120min) will be screened at 12.30hrs.

BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA (2004, Sasithorn Ariyavicha, Thailand, 70min, black and white, silent) will be screened at 14.45hrs.

These two films are a part of the film program FILMVIRUS DOUBLE BILL, in which Wiwat “Filmsick” Lertwiwatwongsa invited his cinephile friends to choose favorite films to screen. The details in Thai of the whole film program can be found here:

HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND

Synopsis from Rouzbeh Rashidi’s website:

There is no escape… From one side of the globe to the other, there is no escaping the faces, the visions, the ever-watchful camera. There is no escaping the mask, there is no escaping the resonating echoes of images and sounds that cross each other over time. There is no escaping the cinema. There is no escaping the terrors of the mind.

Rouzbeh Rashidi is an Iranian-born, Dublin-based filmmaker. He is a part of a new generation of experimental filmmakers in Ireland, which include Maximilian Le Cain, Dean Kavanagh, Esperanza Callado, Alan Lambert, and Michael Higgins. Rashidi has made at least 23 feature films. All of them are experimental. Each of them has different styles. HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND is a film which plays with the mysterious, creepy atmosphere of horror films. The film seems to tell no obvious story, but each viewer can create his/her own story from the images, the sound, and the scenes they experience while seeing this film. If you like “the atmosphere” in the films of Jean Rollin, but don’t like “the stories” in Rollin’s films, this film is highly recommended for you.

BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA

Synopsis from the catalogue of THE 8TH THAI SHORT FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL IN 2004:

“The sea is the place that holds all the memories of every being and everything in the world. Through the cracks of the sea emerge the images from which a tale of a lost city is woven – the city in which its inhabitants’ memories, dreams, emotions were fragilely interconnected.”

Wiwat “Filmsick” Lertwiwatwongsa wrote, “We can say that BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA is the film which talks about the birth of cinema, which has only one primary element, which is “images”—images from different places, images about various kinds of information. Images in this film are obiquely connected. The slender theads which connect these images together come in the form of unknown alphabets...(This is) the film which stands on the edge of reality and dreams, moving images and still photos, awakening and slumber, daydreaming and insomnia, things which are lost and things which are reborn.”

Some young Thai cinephiles have not seen BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA, because its last screening in Bangkok took place in 2007. But if you are fans of Teeranit Siangsanoh, Wachara Kannha, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, and Tanatchai Bandasak, if you worship the atmospheric quality and the uncompromising quality in the films of these four Thai experimental filmmakers, BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA is a must-see for you.

12.30hrs HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND (2013, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, 120min)

14.45 hrs BIRTH OF THE SEANÉMA (2004, Sasithorn Ariyavicha, Thailand, 70min)
