FUNNY GAME IN THE THIRTEENTH YEAR OF DK FILMHOUSE

I went to the opening night of the exhibition THIRTEEN-YEAR CELEBRATION OF DUANGKAMOL FILMHOUSE (FILMVIRUS) at Jamjuree Art Gallery on Jan 9. Three short films were shown at the opening night:

1.ALANGKARN THEATRE (Sonthaya Subyen, A+)

This experimental documentary was shot about 20 years ago in front of Alangkarn Theatre, which was an important arthouse theatre in Bangkok at that time. Paisit Panpruegsachart made a cameo appearance in this film. I used to go to this theatre several times in late 1990s. I saw MUANG NAI MORK (1978, Permpol Choei-arun, A+), PRASART (1975, Piak Poster, A+), and CLOSE UP (1990, Abbas Kiarostami, A+) at this theatre.

2.ONE NIGHT ONE LIFE (1999, Oliver Herrmann, A+++++)

3.DAS EXEMPLAR (2002, Ulrike Ottinger, A+++++)
This film satirizes the bourgeoisie.

These three films will not be shown again in this exhibition, but the exhibition will continue until January 28.

There are also many things in this exhibition, including

1.Film projectors

2.Film poster

3.Newspaper reports on films, including the report on Sasithorn Ariyavicha

4.Brochures of Duangkamol Filmhouse (or DK Filmhouse). Reading these brochures, I regret I didn’t go to see such films as 1+1=3 (1979, Heidi Genee, West Germany) and PERFUMED NIGHTMARE (1977, Kidlat Tahimik, Philippines) at DK Filmhouse in 1996. These films are still not widely available today.

5.Reviews on greatest directors, such as Herbert Achternbusch and Marguerite Duras

6.Articles on double-bill wish lists, including the articles by

6.1 Adadol Ingawanij, who chooses SENSO (1954, Luchino Visconti) and WONDERFUL TOWN (2008, Aditya Assarat), the two films about people who cling to something in the past until it brings destructive effects.

6.2 Filmsick (Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa), who chooses two films on arguably lucky prostitutes—PRETTY WOMAN and FOX AND HIS FRIENDS (1975, Rainer Werner Fassbinder)

6.3 Graiwoot Julpongsathorn, who chooses three films on fatal car accidents—I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997, Jim Gillespie), DEATH OF A CYCLIST (1955, Juan Antonio Bardem, Spain), and THE HEADLESS WOMAN (2008, Lucrecia Martel)

7. Interview clips of Fred Kelemen in Bangkok in November 2007

8. HOLLYWOOD MECCA MOVIE GAME, which is my most favorite thing in this exhibition. This game is like a snake-and-ladder game. You can throw the dice and move your pawn. If you meet a Hollywood thing in your position, you will advance quickly. If you meet an arthouse thing in your position, you will step back quickly.

Thanks a lot for reviewing my sloppy film since it was not a proper film in every sense of the word, nevertheless I am very pleased to have an honour.

Nothing is more worthwhile than to see friends had fun with that Hollywood Mecca Game. It's very nice to read your comments about it. It's a pity all the others speak very little about it. Your word were the only valuable consolation after I got home and had the most terrible shock of my life.
