พอช่วงนี้เราย้อนกลับไปฟังเพลงที่เคยติดอันดับเพลงของเราเมื่อราว 30 ปีก่อน ก็พบว่าตอนนี้เราชอบอ่าน comments ใน Youtube มาก ๆ ซึ่งเมื่อก่อนเราอาจรู้สึกเบื่อที่จะอ่านเพราะส่วนใหญ่มันจะเป็น pattern เดิม ๆ ทำนองที่ว่า “คิดถึงชีวิตยุคนั้นจังเลย”, “Life was so simple then.” “They don’t make music like this anymore,” etc. แต่พอชีวิตของเรามาถึงจุดนึง เราก็พบว่าเราอินกับความเห็นอะไรคลิเช่ ๆ แพทเทิร์นเดิม ๆ บางอันมาก ๆ (ยกเว้นความเห็นทำนองที่ว่า เพลงยุคไหนดีกว่ายุคไหน เพราะเราไม่ได้ติดตามฟังเพลงในยุคปัจจุบัน ดังนั้นเราจะไม่มีการตัดสินเป็นอันขาดว่า เพลงยุคไหนดีหรือด้อยกว่ายุคไหน เพราะเราไม่มีความรู้ในเรื่องนี้)

 

เราคิดว่าสาเหตุที่เราอินกับความเห็นทำนองที่ว่า “ชีวิตของตัวเราเองในยุคนั้นมีความสุขกว่าในตอนนี้มาก” เพราะชีวิตของเราเป็น loser น่ะ คือเมื่อมองย้อนกลับไป 30-35 ปีก่อน ตอนนั้นชีวิตเราเปี่ยมไปด้วย “สุขภาพที่แข็งแรงกว่าในปัจจุบันเป็นอย่างมาก” และเปี่ยมไปด้วยความฝันและความหวังต่อชีวิตในอนาคต เปี่ยมไปด้วยความฝันที่ว่า สักวันฉันจะมีผัวฝรั่ง แล้วได้ไปอยู่เมืองนอก, etc. แต่พอมาถึงปัจจุบันนี้ เราไม่มีความฝันและความหวังใด ๆ เหลืออยู่อีกแล้ว นอกจากการเข้านอนแล้วไม่ต้องตื่นขึ้นมาอีกเลย (อย่างที่เพิ่งเขียนไปเมื่อวาน) การได้ฟังเพลงเมื่อ 30-35 ปีก่อน มันก็เลยทำให้ย้อนนึกถึงช่วงอดีตที่เปี่ยมไปด้วยความสุขและตรงข้ามกับในปัจจุบันมาก ๆ เป็นอย่างดี

 

ก็เลยคิดว่า หลังจากนี้ ตอนที่เราแปะอันดับเพลงของเราเองเมื่อ 30 ปีก่อน บางครั้งเราจะ copy ความเห็นของคนในยูทูบมาแปะไว้ด้วยแล้วกัน เพราะเราชอบอ่านความเห็นเหล่านี้ มันคือความรู้สึกของ “คนธรรมดา” คนที่ไม่ได้โด่งดังเป็นศิลปิน คนธรรมดาที่ฟังเพลงเหล่านี้ทางวิทยุและเทปคาสเซ็ตต์เหมือนกับเราเมื่อ 30 ปีก่อน เหมือนการได้อ่าน “ชีวิต” และ “ความทรงจำ” ของคนเหล่านี้ มัน relate ทางความรู้สึกกับเราได้ดี หลายคนมักจะยังจดจำได้ว่า เขาเคยฟังเพลงนั้น ๆ เมื่อ 30 ปีก่อน “กับใคร” ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่คนคนนั้นที่เคยฟังเพลงนั้น ๆ ร่วมกับเขาไม่ได้มีชีวิตอยู่แล้วในปัจจุบัน เพลงแต่ละเพลงมัน bring back memories ของเมื่อ 30 ปีก่อนให้กับผู้ฟังแต่ละคนอย่างไรบ้าง โดยเฉพาะ memories ถึงอดีตแห่งความสุขที่ไม่มีวันหวนคืนมา และใครบางคนที่เคยฟังเพลงนั้น ๆ ร่วมกับเราในสถานที่นั้น ในเวลานั้น แต่เขาได้จากเราไปแล้วตลอดกาล

Years ago l was on the verge of taking my life , I'm a veteran with PTSD l had just returned from Iraq, l was lost and hurting l actually wanted the pain within to stop. i'll never forget the first time i heard this, i was like 9 and i was in my parent's car alone at a family friend's house waiting for them, this song started playing on the radio and up until now i thought my mind made it up

My husband of 30 years passed away in FL the day our electricity came back on after hurricane Ian. He was the love of my life & my soulmate. This is the song I'm going to play at his memorial when we do the balloon release in the end. Thank you Glen Frey for all the great music you put out over the years, but this is by far the only song i could find to do justice to our love story. My heart is broken, but I know I'll never walk alone. Please pray for me as I put him to rest & try to continue without him. And pray God holds him tight since I can't anymore.

This song is one of my dad’s favorites of all time. We used to listen to it as we drove down to Arkansas as a family in the summers when I was young… he’d put it on when we drove across the border to Tennessee through Memphis and his 3 girls, me and my two sisters, would sing this at the top of our lungs!!! And Daddy used to just laugh and laughed and loved it all! With my mommy sitting in the seat next to him up front singing along as well. My daddy passed away three weeks ago to the day today after battling cancer. This song gives me chills and brings a few tears to my eyes, as it makes me feel like my dad is sitting right beside as I listen to this and sing along. Love you, Daddy, always.

Music was so innocent and great back then!!! Great memories of being in my early 20's!! I would dress just like that and go burn up the dance floor at the clubs!! Great memories I forgot all about this song and how much I loved it. Just heard this on comcast radio! Comcast radio plays some great 90's music!

One of the best 'super groups' ever formed...DAMN YANKEES! I loved Styx from the 70s and Night Ranger from the 80s, they were some of the best rock bands with good songs coming out it seemed every year. When I first bought this CD, I thought their hit song 'High Enough' was going to be the best song on the disc...but when I heard this song, I was stunned...and I had to hit 'repeat' and crank it up really loud...it was so incredible! There are NO grunge albums that are as good as the bands from the 80s.. well, except maybe Alice in Chains! haha
