HOW VICTIMS BECOME AGGRESSORS

WEB OF DECEPTION (1989, David Chung, Hong Kong) is one of my most favorite films of all time.

DOUBLE BILL FILM WISH LIST

WRECKED (2026, Anysay Keola, Laos, A+30)

+ WARLA (2025, Kevin Z. Alambra, Philippines, A+30)

4. หนึ่งในตัวอย่างที่ชัดเจนสำหรับคนประเภทนี้ในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริง ก็คือ Vickrum Digwa ชายชาวซิกข์วัย 23 ปีในอังกฤษ ที่ใช้กริชแทงสังหาร Henry Nowak ชายผิวขาวอายุ 18 ปี แต่พอกลุ่มตำรวจมาถึงที่เกิดเหตุ Digwa กลับอ้างว่าตัวเองตกเป็นเหยื่อของ racist attack (Digwa told the police that Nowak was drunk, had punched him, used a racial slur and pulled off his turban, and showed them what he said was a swollen eye and small bruise.)

(The officers pulled Nowak's hands behind his back and handcuffed him. Nowak said, "Please brother, I can't breathe". These were his last words. He was arrested and read his rights before an officer realised he was unresponsive.)

6.1 VIRIDIANA (1961, Luis Buñuel, Spain)

6.2 L’ARGENT (1983, Robert Bresson, France)

One of my most favorite films of all time

6.3 BAISE-MOI (2000, Virginie Despentes, Coralie Trinh Thi, France)

Spoilers alert

RIP BRENDA FRICKER

I worship her performance in SWANN (1996, Anna Benson Gyles, Canada). Her performance in SWANN is the performance of a lifetime.

1. MY LEFT FOOT (1989, Jim Sheridan, Ireland/UK)

Brenda Fricker

2. HOME ALONE 2: LOST IN NEW YORK (1992, Chris Columbus)

3. A TIME TO KILL (1996, Joel Schumacher)

4. SWANN (1996, Anna Benson Gyles, Canada)

เสียดายที่เราได้ดูผลงานการแสดงของเธอเพียงแค่ 4 เรื่อง เพราะผลงานการแสดงส่วนใหญ่ของเธอน่าจะเป็นภาพยนตร์และละครโทรทัศน์ของไอร์แลนด์ เห็นเธอเคยเข้าชิงรางวัลด้านการแสดงของไอร์แลนด์จาก RELATIVE STRANGERS (1999, TV series), VERONICA GUERIN (2003, Joel Schumacher, Ireland), NO TEARS (2002, TV series), RORY O’SHEA WAS HERE (2004, Damien O’Donnell, Ireland), ALBERT NOBBS (2011, Rodrigo García, USA/Ireland), HOLDING (2022, TV series) ซึ่งเราไม่ได้ดูหนังและละครเหล่านี้เลย แต่ก็ทำให้เข้าใจได้ว่า เธอคงเป็น “เจ้าแม่ด้านการแสดงของไอร์แลนด์”

In her 2025 memoir She Died Young: A Life in Fragments, Fricker wrote that she was physically abused by her mother and groomed by a teacher when she was eight. At 14 she spent two years in hospital after going through a car windscreen in a cycling accident, later developed tuberculosis, and made repeated suicide attempts that led to periods in psychiatric care. She said she was raped at 17 and described another assault early in her career. She also wrote that she began self‑harming before the age of 10, influenced by religious imagery she saw in church

SONG OF THE SEA

From my Facebook on May 23, 2015

PHANTOM ISLANDS (2018, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, A+30)

PHANTOM ISLANDS (2018, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, A+30)

1. Though the film’s synopsis seems to focus on the boundary between documentary and fiction, that is not what I paid attention to at all when I watched this film.  As for me, the film seems very fictional, due to the acting scenes of the couple which are interspersed throughout the film, and due to the haunting soundtrack. These factors make the film seem very different from traditional documentaries, which aim to give some useful information to the viewers. So when I watched this film, I paid no attention to the purpose of the filmmaker. I don’t care what the filmmaker was trying to say or to explore while making this film. I only care about how the film affects me. And this film makes me feel as if it is an adventure film which invites each viewer to create his/her own narrative or story.

2. So when I was watching this film, I created my own story while watching it. In my imagination, the film can be used to tell an adventure story like in Dan Brown’s novels or like THE WEIRDSTONE OF BRISINGAMEN (1960, Alan Garner). The film can be used to tell a story of a couple who try to search for the lost treasure of the kingdom of Cantre’r Gwaelod, or the treasure of Atlantis, or some magical things, or the door to Twilight Zone, or a magical island which has something they are looking for, such as a cure for their sleeping sickness, or a weapon which can be used to fight a witch who once put a sleeping spell on them and put some strange poison in the man’s blood (That’s why the man seems to be in agony from time to time. Hahaha).

In order to find the treasure/magical things/magical island, the couple must search for hidden clues and puzzles lying in castles’ ruins and many other places in Ireland. That’s why the couple are always wandering around, and lead us to experience the beauty of Ireland, including beautiful forests, meadows, and seashores. There is also a man who secretly pursues the couple, in order to get hold of the treasure/magical thing before them. The woman is armed by a magical polaroid camera, which can show us things which are invisible to human eyes. The woman can also talk to animals. Horses, white birds, sheep, and cows provide the couple some useful information. But the most important information/clues about the treasure of Cantre’r Gwaelod/Atlantis or the door to magical island comes from the animals in the aquarium—lizards, turtles, fish, sharks, etc. And the clues sometimes appear in the couple’s dreams. Later, the woman has to make some kind of blood sacrifice with the help of some other people, in order to find the next clue to the treasure/island. The door to the magical island will only appear at the right spot, at the right time when some stars are aligned and the tide is right, and at twilight.

That is how I experienced or enjoyed this film. This film is not made for this purpose. It may be made to explore the boundary between fiction and documentary or explore the nature of images or whatever. But I don’t care. Hahaha. I enjoyed it as one of very few films which inspire me to create my own story while watching them.

3.It is interesting to see that this film is dedicated to Jean Epstein, Marguerite Duras, and Andrzej Zulawski. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet seen any films by Jean Epstein. But I can see how the film is related to Duras and Zulawski. I think the scenes of the couple may be inspired by Zulawski, because these scenes are full of exaggerated gestures. The love of the couple and the quarrels between them are expressed with exaggerated emotions like in Zulawski’s films, I guess.

Some nature scenes may be inspired by Duras, or at least these scenes remind me of such films as AGATHA AND THE LIMITLESS READINGS (1981, Marguerite Duras) or HER VENETIAN NAME IN CALCUTTA DESERT (1976, Marguerite Duras), which tell stories via scenes of empty landscapes.

The difference from Zulawski and Duras is that the films of Zulawski and Duras tell stories, but PHANTOM ISLANDS doesn’t tell any stories, though some viewers like I can create a story by themselves.

4. While I was watching PHANTOM ISLANDS, it unintentionally reminds me of two films by Christelle Lheureux, which are:

4.1 I FORGOT THE TITLE (2008), because I FORGOT THE TITLE also shows us a couple in a misty, mysterious island. It is also an experimental film which tells no exact story. I FORGOT THE TITLE is also very Durasian.

4.2 L’EXPERIENCE PREHISTORIQUE (2003, 80min), because L’EXPERIENCE PREHISTORIQUE presents us images of some Japanese people standing or sitting in a house throughout the film. The original film tells no story, like PHANTOM ISLANDS. But in a way L’EXPERIENCE PREHISTORIQUE tells so many different stories. When the film was shown in Japan, someone was asked to create a story to accompany the film. When the film was shown in France, a French writer created another story for the film. When the film was shown in Bangkok, Prabda Yoon, a famous Thai writer, created a very interesting story about the war in Iraq and its affects on Japanese people for the film. And the film was adapted into so many different stories when it was shown in China, South Korea, Canada, Vietnam, Netherlands, and Switzerland.

So in a way PHANTOM ISLANDS affects me in a similar way to L’EXPERIENCE PREHISTORIQUE. Both films inspire me to create a story by myself, though in the case of L’EXPERIENCE PREHISTORIQUE it is intentional, while in the case of PHANTOM ISLANDS it is unintentional.

5.Because I created my own story while watching PHANTOM ISLANDS, I found that my experience for this film can be compared to my experience for some films of Alain Robbe-Grillet, Jacques Rivette, Teeranit Siangsanoh and Wachara Kanha.

5.1 It reminds me of Alain Robbe-Grillet, because in films such as EDEN AND AFTER (1970, Alain Robbe-Grillet), the focus seems to be on the images of character postures. EDEN AND AFTER is full of strong images. We see characters posing beautifully or strikingly all the time. The relationship between “images” and “story” in Robbe-Grillet’s films is distorted or is very unusual compared to ordinary narrative films. I find that some images and editing in PHANTOM ISLANDS give me the same kind of impressions.

5.2 PHANTOM ISLANDS unintentionally reminds me of Jacques Rivette, because the story that I created by myself somehow can be compared to such films as DUELLE (UNE QUARANTAINE) (1976, Jacques Rivette), which tells a magical story in contemporary settings without special effects or CG. Jacques Rivette is one of my most favorite directors, because he used “everyday settings” or “ordinary places” and created an adventure or an exciting story out of these ordinary places, such as PARIS BELONGS TO US (1961), OUT 1, NOLI ME TANGERE (1971), CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1974), LE PONT DU NORD (1981), GANG OF FOUR (1989), UP DOWN FRAGILE (1995), and VA SAVOIR (2001). Jacques Rivette could turn “ordinary places” into something mysterious or magical. It seems like he saw magic in everyday life. And that’s why PHANTOM ISLANDS reminds me of Rivette, because this film turns images of “ordinary places” into something magical, too, by blurring the edges of the images, and by accompanying the images with haunting soundtrack or sound of invisible things.

5.3 PHANTOM ISLANDS unintentionally reminds me very much of the films by Teeranit Siangsanoh and Wachara Kanha, because these Thai filmmakers made fictional films by using “documentary images” or “images captured from everyday life”. Teeranit and Wachara are zero-budget filmmakers, but they like to make many fictional films. They have no budget to create sets or to hire actors, so they just films many things in their everyday life—views of the roads, views of some deserted houses in Bangkok, views of some wastelands—and also films some landscapes when they travel upcountry, and use these documentary images or “everyday images” to create some fictional stories in their films. In THE LIGHT HOUSE (2011, Teeranit Siangsanoh, 43min), Teeranit can tells us a story of the apocalypse by filming a deserted house. In LOSE (2011, Wachara Kanha, 70min), Wachara tells a fictional story by using some images he filmed while traveling to a seashore. In INVADER (2011, Wachara Kanha, 90min), Wachara tells a sci-fi story about aliens by using images he filmed while walking and playing with friends in a forest. In THE COLD-SKULLED MAN (2013, Teeranit Siangsanoh, 33min), Teeranit tells a sci-fi story by filming images of a farmer living his everyday life. In THE NYMPH or NANG PRAI (2016, Teeranit Siangsanoh, 19min), Teeranit tells a story about the love of a female half-crocodile, half-human, by using mostly documentary images of a tourist spot.

PHANTOM ISLANDS reminds me very much of NANG PRAI, because both films can be divided into two main parts—documentary images of tourist spots and images of actors/actresses doing something. Another similar thing between these two films is that both films show us how “images of something which seems so ordinary” can be turned into something mysteriously powerful or indescribable by the gaze of great directors. In PHANTOM ISLANDS, we see an old man’s face at the beginning of the film. The camera seems to linger on the man’s face longer than usual. And that may be the boundary between documentary and fiction. The scene of a man’s face seems to stop being a documentary and starts to inspire some imagination in the minds of some viewers. In NANG PRAI, we see the heroine combing her hair in an ordinary room for about 5 minutes. There is nothing else happening in the scene. We just see a woman combing her hair while listening to a beautiful old Thai song. In this scene, we see an ordinary woman doing an ordinary thing for a long time. But somehow the gaze of Teeranit can turn images of these ordinary things into one of the most magical scenes of all time in Thai films.

6.In conclusion, I like PHANTOM ISLANDS very much, because it unintentionally inspires me to create some adventure stories inside my head. And I think in some cases the boundary between documentary and fiction doesn’t only depend on the images themselves, but also depends on each director and each viewer. Images or scenes of a tourist spot may be documentary images/scenes in themselves, but when they are devoid of information, and when they are juxtaposed with fictional scenes, they can easily become a part of fictional stories, intentionally as in the case of Teeranit Siangsanoh’s fims, possibly unintentionally as in the case of PHANTOM ISLANDS. Documentary scenes such as the scenes in which the crew of PHANTOM ISLANDS appear in front of the camera or appear in the polaroid photo, or the scene in which a flock of sheep seem to be disturbed by the presence of the filmmaker, may be documentary scenes in themselves, judging by the purpose of the filmmakers, but they can be turned into fictional scenes in my imagination, because the will and imagination of each viewer can play an important part, too.

TRAILERS (2016, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, 180min, A+30)

TRAILERS (2016, Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland, 180min, A+30)

1.It’s too difficult for me to interpret this film, and I think Wiwat “Filmsick” Lertwiwatwongsa have interpreted it very good already. But it is also too difficult for me to describe my experience or my feelings for this film, because, like many other great experimental films, this film gives me a unique and indescribable experience.

2.My most favorite scenes in the film are the scenes in which there are some optical illusions, or the scenes in which I can’t specify who or what is inside the screen, or who or what is standing in front of the screen. These scenes include the scenes in which there is a person standing or walking inside the screen, and there’s another person standing or walking in front of the screen, and also the scenes which show a person and a fan. The position of the fan makes me wonder if it is inside or outside the screen.

I’m not sure about the meanings of these scenes, but I like this kind of optical illusions very much.

3.Maybe the film tries to present the act of watching a film. In this regard, I think this film may be compared to PENGUIN (2007, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, 40min), which is in fact very different from TRAILERS. PENGUIN is about a man and a woman who wander in a park at night, trying to find a way to see some penguins in the park. PENGUIN is a funny film, and some viewers think the film actually makes jokes about us, film viewers, because we are persons who travel to see something in the dark, no matter whether that thing is actually worth the effort or not. Are we wasting our time to try to see films? Are films really worth our efforts?

TRAILERS takes a very different approach from PENGUIN to present “the act of watching a film”. But in the end TRAILERS unintentionally makes me ask myself the same questions as I asked myself after seeing PENGUIN. Are we wasting our time seeing so many films, because many films are actually the same—the combination of light, darkness, colors, sound, characters, characters doing some activities, natural or man-made things, digital signals, audio and video signals, sadomasochistic pain, lust, sexual pleasures, identification with characters, some thoughts or wisdom, etc.

Normally I think that films are “something sacred”, and I think that “the act of watching a film” can be compared to “going to church” or “meditation to contact some divine beings” or “reading some religious books in order to gain enlightenment”. But PENGUIN and TRAILERS seem to reduce films and “the act of watching a film” to their real status. Films are just something shown in the dark. Films are just the combination of light, darkness, colors, sound, and analog or digital signals. The act of watching a film is like going to a zoo, or some kinds of daily activities which we have repeated for thousands of times, sometimes in order to have some sexual pleasures from the films, sometimes in order to have some thoughts or gain some wisdom from the films.

Though films are not sacred, and they may be something meaningless like in PENGUIN and TRAILERS, I am not bored yet with seeing films. Seeing films has become my daily activity. It’s like taking a bath. I have to take a bath everyday. Seeing films is like taking a bath with light and color, instead of with water. Like what the characters in TRAILERS do, I still take great pleasure in jumping into the pool of light and colors every day. Meaningless or meaningful, I don’t care. Maybe my life is meaningless already, so if the act of watching a film is a meaningless act which I have repeated for thousands of times, this activity really corresponds to my life.

AREAS OF SYMPATHY

1.AREAS OF SYMPATHY (2013, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, 40min, A+30)
2.BACKGROUND (2011, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, short, A+30)
3.HOTEL LA MIRAGE (2010, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, short, A+25)
4.DIRT (2012, Maximilian Le Cain, Vicky Langan, Ireland, short, A+25)
5.SCHEMA (2012, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, short, A+10)
6.SMUDGE (2010, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, short, A+)

--These are some short films by Maximilian Le Cain that I saw. I like AREAS OF SYMPATHY the most, because it is different from many experimental films which deal with landscape and abstract things. AREAS OF SYMPATHY seem to deal with some specific subjects, including old sci-fi films. This subject makes this film different.

I don’t know any titles of the old sci-fi films which are included in this film.

The scene that I like the most in AREAS OF SYMPATHY is the scene which show a woman with black cape walking past a railing fence. She walks past it about five times, with slightly different postures every time.

--BACKGROUND is very beautiful, though I understand nothing in it. I think one of the most memorable things in this film is the scenes of some electricity towers.

--HOTEL LA MIRAGE is ethereally beautiful.

--DIRT is very memorable, especially the last scene. I don’t know if I like the last scene or not. Part of me doesn’t like this kind of activity—spitting in each other’s face. Another part of me thinks this activity is rarely presented in films, so no matter whether I like the content of the scene or not, I must admit the scene is unique.

--SCHEMA is beautiful in its own way, though I think it is not very different from many experimental films I have seen. However, I prefer SCHEMA to SMUDGE, because SCHEMA seems to have a structure, while SMUDGE seems to be too difficult or too brief for me to understand or appreciate.

CLOUD OF SKIN (2015, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, A+30)

CLOUD OF SKIN (2015, Maximilian Le Cain, Ireland, A+30)

1.Like many great experimental films I have seen, this film is beyond my ability to describe it. I don’t understand anything at all in this film. It is described as “a fever dream”, and indeed it is as it’s described.

2.To compare it with the Irish experimental films of Rouzbeh Rashidi and Dean Kavanagh, I think this film is more concentrated than the films of Dean Kavanagh (I mean HISTORY OF WATER and A HARBOUR TOWN). The two feature films of Kavanagh that I saw seem to deal with many things, while CLOUD OF SKIN seem to deal with only one relationship of a man and a woman (if I understand it correctly). So I feel CLOUD OF SKIN is more concentrated.

To compare CLOUD OF SKIN with the films of Rouzbeh Rashidi, I think CLOUD OF SKIN is not as rigidly structured as the films of Rashidi. I think many films of Rashidi that I saw seem to be based on “a concept”, while CLOUD OF SKIN seem to be based on “feelings”. Of course, there might be many concepts behind many images and sequences in CLOUD OF SKIN, but these concepts are not obvious to me. I cannot tell why different parts of the film are presented in different ratios. I cannot tell why different parts of the film are presented in different color schemes: saturated colors, pale colors, black and white, etc. There might be concepts behind it, but I feel as if the decision to present any part of the film in any ratio or any color scheme is based on feelings rather than concepts.

3. Nearly every shot in this film is extremely beautiful. One of the shots that I like very much is the shot which shows the man falling downstairs. Another favorite scene of mine is the scene which shows a place that looks like an empty hotel hall, and then we see a man walking into the frame from the left side, but after he walks for 2-3 steps, he disappears, and then we see the empty hotel hall again for many seconds, and the same man walks into the frame for a few seconds, before he disappears again. I think this scene is very effective and haunting.

CHAYANIN TIANGPITAYAGORN REVIEWS "A HARBOUR TOWN"

Chayanin Tiangpitayagorn wrote about A HARBOUR TOWN in Thai. So I translated his review into English here:

A HARBOUR TOWN (2013, Dean Kavanagh, Ireland)
A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

There are some moments in this film (actually nearly half of the film) which make the film resembles a mystery-detective movie, because the character whom I assumed the protagonist of the film seems to change his face and hairstyle all the time, as if he is a detective or a spy, or as if the film was made in a twelve-year period like BOYHOOD, because in one scene his face looks clean, but in another scene he wears a moustache; in one scene he wears glasses, in another scene his hair grows longer and its color has changed. I just realized later that this is not the same character, but they look like each other very much, because they are siblings in real life.

Though I misunderstood about this thing, the film still has other elements which resemble a detective movie, especially the middle-eastern character (I guess this character is played by Rouzbeh Rashidi) who seems to come to search for something in an empty builiding. He also looks out from the rooftop filled with bird droppings and records what is happening out there with his camera. Similarly, the protagonist goes to a harbour town, venturing into a forest, meeting other characters, and receiving something. But when the audience sees the protagonist smoking, the audience will never know what he is thinking about, whom he is thinking about, or what he is looking for.

Maybe we don’t have to focus on the story of this film, because the film has no dialogues. (Though we can see that the characters are speaking in some scenes, we cannot hear them, and we don’t even know who these characters are.) The owner of the most prominent sound in this film is the nature—the sound of water, wind, rain, flocks of birds, or the storm which rages through the harbour town. The nature devours all the atmosphere and living things in this film and makes them become a part of the story of sound and light.

The last part of the film seems like a game of haunted ghosts, which puts people inside a haunted house or an enclosed dark space which has very few light sources, in order to search for some truths or to solve a mystery. But in this film we don’t know what the mystery is or who the owner of the mystery is. We don’t even know if we should solve the mystery or not. There is one scene in this film which is extremely scary, though there is a very bright sunshine in this scene. It is as if the film has become a zombie film for 15 seconds before it returns to the previous state.

In conclusion, while we are watching this film, we may feel as if we are thrown into a mysterious harbour town with a small population. We meet a few inhabitants of the town, who live under the control of the story of sound of light. There may be some mysteries, may be not. Even if there are some mysteries, we are not sure if we should solve them or not. We don’t even know how well these townspeople know one another.

RETURN OF SUSPICION (2014, Dean Kavanagh, Ireland, 93min, A+30)

What I think about this film:

1.It is easily one of the most beautiful films I saw this year. What I like very much in this film is its extremely poetic quality. It is like HISTORY OF WATER (2012) and A HARBOUR TOWN (2013), two previous feature films of Dean Kavanagh, in the way that it seems to tell no obvious stories at all. I feel “wonderfully lost” watching three films. I mean because these three films have no “narratives” or “stories” that I can cling on to, I feel “lost”. I feel as if I was drifting in strange, unpredictable currents of sound and images. I don’t know what is happening. Many times I don’t know what is depicted on the screen. I can’t predict what will happen in the future. All I can do is experiencing the sound and images of the film. And experiencing them yields a truly wonderful feeling.

I admire Kavanagh very much for these three films’ uncompromising quality. To make films as uncompromising as these, the filmmaker must be very strong-willed. Kavanagh is now one of my most favorite contemporary filmmakers. I like him as much as I like Rouzbeh Rashidi and Raya Martin. There are not many filmmakers I know who still keep on making extremely experimental feature films like this.

I admire Kavanagh not only because his films are uncompromising, but also because he is very talented. It might be easy to make a non-narrative film, or a film which tells no stories. It might be easy to place some random images next to each other.  But if you are not talented, the film you make can feel so flat, so boring, so uninspiring, or so pretentious. However, it is extremely difficult to make a poetic film which can make the viewers feel some kinds of indescribable or sublime feelings like these.

2. Talking about talent, I think this film shows that Kavanagh is very talented as a director, a cinematographer, and an editor. The film is very powerful for me, but its power does not come from the story or the performances, but comes from the beautiful, enigmatic images, and how these images are placed together.

There are so many gorgeous images in this film. Some of them are very much like paintings. One of the most beautiful images in this film is the one in which we see a reflection of drifting clouds on a woman’s face.

As for the editing, I like the fast editing in some scenes, including the first time we see the image of a girl flashing for a second on the screen, or the first time we see the image of the radiance of the sun in a forest flashing for a second on the screen, before the scene is cut to the next sequence. The fast editing near the end of the film is brilliant, too.

3. Though the film seems to tell no stories, I think the film has “a climax” for me. And its climax is in the minutes 55-60, when we see the image of a woman on a boat, a man on a train, and a woman on a train alternately. The film cuts back and forth between these three images very fast, and it gives me a kind of climax or orgasm. But don’t ask me what this scene means. I just know that it overwhelms me completely. And I think its power comes from the talent of Kavanagh as an editor, a cinematographer, and a poetic filmmaker.

4. Though I don’t know what the film is trying to tell or convey, some images or some scenes in this film inspire me to imagine some stories in my head, though I can’t imagine one single story which can cover all the scenes in this film.

This film inspires many stories in my head. For example, I think about a murder story after I saw the scene in which we see a dog walking around a moving hand which later stops moving. Is the owner of that hand murdered? Who is that figure walking around in a forest and trying to evade from other people? Are there some myterious stories or secrets in this village? Why do some characters seem to search for something or some clues in an abandoned, dilapidated house? Is the scene starring Rouzbeh Rashidi and Maximilian Le Cain a flashback of what happened in that mysterious house? Are there some kinds of dark power or mysterious ghosts in the forest? The film inspires me to imagine some stories which share some elements with TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALKS WITH ME (1992, David Lynch) and DREILEBEN: ONE MINUTE OF DARKNESS (2011, Christoph Hochhäusler), because these two films present some mysterious forests, too.

As for what is shown near the end of the film, it inspires me to imagine a story about the construction of a golf course which leads to the destruction of a forest. Hahaha. Because the film shows some images of a cartoon character playing golf, and juxtaposes it with some vulgar scenes of people having sex, it seems to stand in contrast with the scene in which we see a man caressing a tree tenderly. And in Thailand we used to have some problems with the construction of some golf courses, so these scenes inspire me to think about some environmentalist stories like that, though I know that is not the purpose of this film. Hahaha.

Though I can’t help imagining some stories while watching some scenes, what I like the most in this film are not these stories in my head. What I like the most is what I have said before—the feeling of being lost in a forest of strange but wonderful images.

5. I like the extreme close-up in some scenes very much, because I don’t know what is being shown in these scenes.

6.Another scene which I like very much is the scene in which we see two characters play with the shadow of a tennis racket or a badminton racket. It is very strange, beautiful, and eerie. It makes me imagine that these characters might be searching for a treasure or might be invoking a spirit.

7. It is very difficult to think about a film which has something similar to RETURN OF SUSPICION, because this film is very strange. However, if I have to screen this film together with a film by another filmmaker, I may choose to screen it together with some apocalyptic films made by Teeranit Siangsanoh, because in Teeranit’s films, we sometimes see characters wandering around in an old, dilapidated house, searching for something which we don’t know, too.

NON-TOUCH'S REVIEW ON "HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND"

This is a translation of what Non-Touch Rafael Ram’Jazz wrote in Thai about HSP: THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE TERRORS OF THE MIND:

HSP: There Is No Escape From The Terrors Of The Mind (Rouzbeh Rashidi, Ireland/UK/Iran/Oman, 2013)

I’m very interested in double image and persistence of vision in this film. Double image in this film is done by the superimposition of two images. Persistence of vision is a way to make moving images for human eyes. To make it simple, an image which our eyes perceive will linger in our brain for 1/25 second. So when 1/25-second-long images appear sucessively in front of our eyes, we will see a moving image. Examples of moving images include flipbooks, cinema, shaking a pen in order to make it look like being bent, or the case in which we gaze at an image for a long time, and then we suddenly turn to watch a white screen or close our eyes, we will still see the former image lingering in our eyes.

The process of superimposition in this film is interesting. We see two images on top of each other. Sometimes each of these two images comes from a different time and a different place. Sometimes each of them comes from the same place, or the same time. Sometimes each of them belongs to the same series of images, but the degree of brightness in each of these two images is different, so it causes double vision, because two lingering images are perceived and transmitted to our brain at the same time. This film is an experimental film or an avant-garde film. It has a story, but a very thin story. It is about a man who left Iran, which is his motherland, and came to live in Ireland. The film doesn’t focus on telling a story. It focuses on cinematographic techniques, and innovative editing, because it has a lot of superimposition, which conveys the memory of his journey from Iran to Ireland. This journey seems not to be so good, because images and sound in this film convey some indescribable pain.

Double image in this film is done by many techniques. Some techniques that I can observe include:

1.Superimposition which is done after the shooting, or done in the editing process. This is done by superimposing images in two layers, and lowering the intensity of the images to make them look more translucent, so that we can see through one image and perceive the other image. Normally, when we have two images, the one which is more intense will become the back one or the main one. But in this film the degree of the intensity of the images are the same, so we don’t know which one is the main image and which one is the secondary image. Sometimes one of the two images falls into complete darkness, but doesn’t fade away, so it makes the other image clearer. This is a very strange technique. The darker it is, the clearer we will see. It is the opposite of the mechanism of human eyes which needs bright light in order to see. It is as if sometimes when we close our eyes, we can see things more clearly.

There is also another kind of superimposition in this film. In this kind, we can distinguish easier which image is the main one and which image is the secondary one. In this kind of superimposition, one image has a smaller aspect ratio than the other one. The aspect ratio of this film is 1.85:1, but the aspect ratio of the superimposing image is 1.33:1, so it makes the images look like what we see when a projector beams another film onto the main film. It is as if the other image belongs to another film which is independent from the main image.

2.Double vision which is done in the shooting process. From what I notice, the filmmaker used a double lens which is like what was used in the film POST TENEBRAS LUX (Carlos Reygadas, 2012). In this category, the two images we see simultaneously are shot at the same time and in the same place, but with different lenses. The lens in the middle is different from the lens in the perimeter. I feel pleasantly strange every time I see this technique used since POST TENEBRAS LUX (Seeing this film in a theatre satisfied me very much.) We see two images of the same thing staggering on top of each other but not completely. These two images move simultaneously. And sometimes it seems as if it is not shot by a double lens, but by a broken lens, so the composition of the images is not as perfect as it should be. I like this technique very much. The shot which impresses me the most is the shot in which we see a Persian man standing on a desert cliff, but the overlapping of the two images cuts the image of the man vertically, and the head of the man is swallowed by the crack of the image caused by the difference of the lenses.

3. The flickering of images. The flickering of images is caused by discontinuous light that we perceive. Light which doesn’t continue long enough can’t make persistence of vision. The images that we see will be swallowed by darkness. What we see is the image, the darkness, the image, the darkness, ..., and continuing like this.  I regard this flickering technique as a kind of double image, because when the darkness takes over the screen space completely, we still see a blink of the former image in our eyes together with the black screen. The lingering image on the black screen is a blurred one. It is not as vivid as the image which we see in the former second. The black color makes us see blurred images, or images from the past which linger in our eyes. This technique is different from the superimposition done after the shooting which I talked about in the first category. In the first category, two images exist at the same second. When one image goes out, we will see the other image clearer. But in this third category, a flickering image is an image which is discontinued. This image is interrupted repeatedly by a black screen. The blurred image which appears on the black screen is only a lingering image which we just saw in the 1/25 second before that moment.

Apart from double images done by these three main techniques, there is also the mixing together between these techniques. For example, in the scene in which the mask seems to appear in front of a photocopying light, we see a black screen at first, then we see a blurred image of the mask, and then we see the image of the protagonist superimposed onto the mask image. When the mask looks bright, we cannot see clearly the image of the protagonist. But when the screen turns darker, we can see clearer the image of the protagonist.

The use of sound is interesting, too. The sound in this film is the master of horror film soundtrack. The soundtrack which comes in low tone kept me awake all through the film. The characters also speak with echo effect. Their voices reverberate in our ears. It seems as if the images and the sound of this film travel into our consciousness, and shatter our memory endlessly.
