POLL 73: MINI-SERIES

POLL 73: MINI-SERIES

My poll 73 is inspired by DOMBAIS ET FILS (2007, Laurent, Jaoui, 180 min, A+++++++++++++++), a French mini-series I just saw. I think it is one of my most favorite mini-series of all time, because Edith de Préville, a character in this mini-series, is one of my most favorite characters ever. She is an extremely indomitable woman.

DOMBAIS ET FILS shares one important thing with other mini-series I love. They are not aesthetically interesting. I just love their stories. I decided to make a list of my favorite mini-series, and found that only two of them are really aesthetically interesting – BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ and A TIME OF INDIFFERENCE. I wonder if there are other mini-series which are aesthetically interesting or are interesting because of their "forms" or "styles", not only because of their "contents".

THESE ARE MY FAVORITE MINI-SERIES. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1980, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 894 min)

FILM WISH LIST: LATE SUMMER BLUES (1987, Renen Schorr)

This is my comment in Twilight Virus' blog:
http://twilightvirus.blogspot.com/2010/03/80.html

I have never heard of LATE SUMMER BLUES (1987, Renen Schorr) before. It sounds very interesting. Its plot reminds me of CAT AND MOUSE (1967, Hans Jürgen Pohland, A+++++), which also deals with friends before going to war.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2724/4434849387_951b55f511_o.jpg

I also haven't seen PAINTED FACES (1988, Alex Law). I think I used to be confused between this film and THE PUPPETMASTER (1993, Hou Hsiao-hsien), which I also haven't seen.

Btw, I just mentioned your article on European cinematographers in my blog. I think your articles are still very useful for me though you wrote it many years ago. I still have to refer to it or re-read it again and again.

PATH OF PERSEVERANCE: THE CHIN FROM BURMA

This is a news release from Art Center Chula:

Path of Perseverance: The Chin from Burma
By Benny Manser

At The Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University
March 10 – April 3, 2010
Opening Reception: Wednesday March 10, 2010, 4:30-7pm

The eagerly awaited Path of Perseverance: The Chin from Burma exhibition is set to open at the Art Center, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. The exhibition which will be officially opened, 4:30-7pm, will also feature a keynote address by Burmese activists.

The exhibition will feature an exceptional portfolio of photographic images by the photographer, artist and writer Benny Manser. Benny’s travels and photographs have created a potent mixture of awe and message which in turn has identified with the horrendous issues of Burma and how the world has seemingly left the plight to fend for itself.

The photographs portraying the story of the Chin ethnic group, spread out across 3 countries in Burma, India and Malaysia, are compelling, emotional and sublime. Manser’s exhibition is a journey of conscience as well as artistic resonance. It is even more enlightening that Manser, who is currently an International Development studies Student at Chulalongkorn University, has captured ‘real’ un-staged images, without manipulation or persuasion. The effect created by Manser is arresting, haunting, and has absolute authority.

The exhibition will be open to the public from March 10 to April 3, free admission, at the Art Center, 7th Floor, Center of Academic Resources, Chulalongkorn University.

About the artist
Benny Manser earned a BSc in Computer Animation and Special Effects from the University of Bradford, UK, where he achieved a first-class honours degree. Having a British father and a Karen-Mon mother, he is passionate about using the medium of photography as a way of communicating with people to gain a greater understanding of one another and help to bring complex problems to a more personal human level specifically relating to Burma.

NON-SPECIFIED GENDER

http://gay.pinknews.co.uk/2010/03/11/australia-is-first-to-recognise-non-specified-gender/

Australia may have made gender history this week, as the New South Wales government lays claim to being the first in the world to recognise an individual’s sex as officially “not specified”.

This milestone in the evolution of gender queer came about with the issuing of a ‘Sex Not Specified’ Recognised Details Certificate in place of a birth certificate to Norrie (also known as norrie mAy-Welby) a resident of Sydney.

Zie (a gender-specific pronoun) is now legally recognised by the Australian government as neither male nor female, the Scavenger reports.

It is the end of a long journey for Norrie, aged 48, who was born in Scotland and registered male at birth.

When zie was 23, zie commenced the process of gender re-assignment through hormone treatment and surgery. Zie was later issued with a gender recognition certificate as female in Australia.

However, Norrie did not feel comfortable living solely as a female.

Hir philosophy, developed through hir art and through hir work with Sex and Gender Education, a lobby group campaigning for the rights of all sex and gender diverse people, draws heavily on Eastern concepts of one-ness: of yin and yang being just two halves of a greater whole.

On hir site, zie writes: "The theorists who inform transsexual and intersexual medical intervention presume that everyone has one real gender identity at the core of their being, whether or not this is congruent with their anatomy. Even children biologically hermaphrodite are supposed to be 'really' of one gender, with the surgically discarded sex declared the 'false' one.

“Unsurprisingly, many intersexual children are traumatised by the obliteration of their sexual duality. Many as adults seek transsexual procedures to restore their discarded sex, but at the expense of the surviving sex. This is just one tragic result of our society's belief in mutually exclusive genders.

“Not all human societies see the genders as mutually exclusive. Transgender people are seen in India as "half half" , in the Philippines as "lady-boys" , and in indigenous American cultures as "two-spirited." People seen by our society as having a gender opposite to the one sex they were born with are seen by other societies as simply having two genders. Bi-gendered. In this light, the permanent removal of the characteristics of one sex to allow the expression of the other seems a total waste."

Zie goes on: “I wonder if we in Western culture would have more options for happiness if we too had permission not simply to be of one gender or the other, but also to be of both genders, if such was our nature."

Norrie ceased lifelong hormone treatment and took up a neuter identity – neither male nor female – resisting any further female or male normalisation.

In January 2010 doctors declared that they were unable to determine hir as either male or female as zie has no gonads, the hormonal system was not typically male or female, and Norrie’s psychological identity was neuter.

The rest is now history.

The irony of this landmark decision will not be lost on other trans Australians, who discovered just three years ago that the Australian foreign minister, Alexander Downer, had secretly and without consultation reversed a policy whereby trans people could obtain a passport stating their “intended sex.”

--I'm glad THE BANGKOK BOURGEOIS PARTY is the winner. This film uses darkness in a unique way. The darkness in this film still creates a lot of fear in my mind now. It represents the time and the place in which I am living, and I don't know if I will survive it or not.

--There's a recent film which I think presents darkness very beautifully. It's THE WOLFMAN (2010, Joe Johnston, A+), which is very atmospheric. The cinematographer of this film is Shelly Johnson. The dark forest in THE WOLFMAN is so beautiful that I think it is not too far removed from the gorgeous dark forest in A LAKE.

THE CRIMINAL OF BARRIO CONCEPCION

This is my comment in Zach's blog:
http://elusivelucidity.blogspot.com/2010/02/butterflies.html

I just saw THE CRIMINAL OF BARRIO CONCEPCION (1998, Lav Diaz) and my friend Filmsick thinks that it should be compared to BUTTERFLIES HAVE NO MEMORIES, because both films deal with kidnapping and a kidnapper with some sorts of humanity in him. I think the main difference between both films can be described by your words, because THE CRIMINAL OF BARRIO CONCEPCION is "in the vein of novelistic, richly structured moral exposé", but does not fully belong to "the "slow", "meandering," small-s surrealist paradigm of contemporary festival cinema".

(However, I think THE CRIMINAL OF BARRIO CONCEPCION can be called "slow" if you compared it to action-kidnapping films such as MAN ON FIRE, but it is still much faster than other films by Lav Diaz.)

This is a photo of Raymond Bagatsing, the main actor of THE CRIMINAL OF BARRIO CONCEPCION:

FAVORITE OLD SONGS 1: CRAZY -- DAISY DEE

FAVORITE QUOTE FROM JACQUES RIVETTE

I quote it from Misterio Abierto's blog:
http://misterioabierto.blogspot.com/2009/09/jacques-rivette-1.html

" To write the history of these ten years would obviously be a fascinating task, but it is equally obvious that he closer one comes to the present day, the more one gets tangled up in polemic and personal preferences. I'm judging from my own experience of reseeing at the Cinematheque the films which I first saw in 1950 or so. Murnau, Stroheim, Griffith are still great; the unimportant film still look unimportant. But when one comes to films made over the last decade, I find that some which I didn't properly understand at the time now look remarkable, while others which I admired seem worthless. It isn't easy to make an objective assessment of something that is close to you.

For example, I saw Resnais' Muriel a few days ago. I'm glad I wasn't asked for an opinion on it right away, because I have since seen it a second time; and I realize that my opinion after a first viewing would have been a mixture of polemic, bile and prejudice about the sort of film I expected from Resnais. It's difficult to absorb a new film straight away, because one begins by superimposing the film one expected, which one wanted to see, and even which one wanted to make oneself.

All these barriers must be set aside before one can see the film which is actually there on the screen, and only then can one decide whether or not the director has succeeded on his terms rather than yours. A certain distance is absolutely essential. Spontaneous reactions are all very fine, but they tell you more about the critic than about the film."

TRUE LEGEND (2010, Yuen Woo Ping, C+)

What I love the most in LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES is the scene in which I think there will be a murder, but the murder doesn't happen. What happens is the opposite of murder. What happens is the human kindness. It surprises me a lot.

Though LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES seems to preach about kindness, generosity, charity, or something like that, I think the film does this thing in a very different way from A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The ending of LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES is also very great, because it does not affirm the family value. This characteristic makes LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES rise much higher above such films as A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE FAMILY MAN (2000, Brett Ratner), or other films which teach us to be generous and love your family.

I also like the mental journey from "tortured feelings" to "happiness" experienced by the heroine in LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES. Somehow I can follow her mental journey. This is different from the mental journey in SHARA (2003, Naomi Kawase, A+). The characters in SHARA seem to be happy at the end of the film, but I can't follow their journey.

Having said that I can follow the mental journey in LA CHAMBRE DES MAGICIENNES doesn't mean that I can be as generous as the heroine in this film. If I were in the same situation as the heroine, I might not do the same thing as her.

Somehow I think UP IN THE AIR should be screened together with THE DEVIL, PROBABLY (1977, Robert Bresson, A+++++) and APRIL (1962, Otar Iosseliani, A+++++), because the differences between these films are the reasons why I don't like UP IN THE AIR that much. There's a dialogue in UP IN THE AIR which accidentally reminds me of the greatest dialogue in THE DEVIL, PROBABLY about what one will gain in one's lifetime. But while the characters in UP IN THE AIR still hold on to life, the character in THE DEVIL, PROBABLY doesn't.

The nearly-empty room of the hero in UP IN THE AIR accidentally reminds me of the nearly-empty room of the couple in APRIL, but UP IN THE AIR seems to portray the loneliness of the empty room, while APRIL seems to portray the true happiness of the empty room. UP IN THE AIR would rise much higher above APRIL, if the film chose to portray the true happiness of the empty room of a single, self-contented person.

STÉPHANE BRIZÉ AND FLORENCE VIGNON WIN CÉSAR AWARD

I'm very glad to know that Stéphane Brizé and Florence Vignon win César Award for Best Adapted Screenplay from MADEMOISELLE CHAMBON. I haven't seen this film yet, but I love Brizé and Vignon a lot from their work in HOMETOWN BLUES (1999, Stéphane Brizé, A+++++). I wrote a comment on HOMETOWN BLUES here:
