ART INSPIRED BY ART

The Issue 28 of FUSE, a Thai film magazine, is available now. It has an interview of Tossapol Boonsinsukh, and he mentioned my name in his interview. I am very glad. :-)

Tossapol has finished a new project called SHE IS READING NEWSPAPER (2008-2009). It is an amazing project and connects with many art forms. If you can read Thai, you can enjoy his project in the link below:
http://yrna.wordpress.com/%e0%b8%8a%e0%b8%b1%e0%b9%89%e0%b8%99%e0%b8%aa%e0%b8%ad%e0%b8%87/

If you can’t read Thai, I will try to translate something about this project. It has many steps as follows:

1.SHE IS READING NEWSPAPER (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, short film, A+)
This short film is about the transference of feelings from one person to another person.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWwOcpknjLA

2.Pichit Trairutsakul (Tim, the drummer) and Pinyo Limpongsathorn (Yo, the guitarist) made some drum and guitar music inspired by the short film above.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsmMvMyghvs

3.Tanapol Virulhakul made a piece of performance art inspired by the drum and guitar music above. (Tanapol is the director of BUD-DHA-KALA, a mockumentary which I like very much.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1hIZdJEZQE

4.Patavee Viranuvat and Tip-apa Songsettakit made a piece of piano music inspired by the performance of Tanapol.

You can listen to the piano music here:
http://www.imeem.com/people/EPpeH3W/music/pCi5KRci/viji-and-thip-she-is-reading-newspaper-sound-of-piano/

(Patavee is also a short film director. He directed TAKESHI (2005) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqX0hC9TDGU)

5.Theepisit Mahaneeranon wrote a poem inspired by the piano music. You can read the English poem here:
http://yrna.wordpress.com/%e0%b8%8a%e0%b8%b1%e0%b9%89%e0%b8%99%e0%b8%aa%e0%b8%ad%e0%b8%87/

(Theepisit directed some short films, including CLOUD (2008, A) and CENSORSHIT! FATHER AND SON (2007).)

6.Wanweaw Hongwiwat wrote a cartoon inspired by Theepisit’s poem. You can see her cartoon here:
http://yrna.wordpress.com/%e0%b8%8a%e0%b8%b1%e0%b9%89%e0%b8%99%e0%b8%aa%e0%b8%ad%e0%b8%87/

You can watch her drawing cartoon here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0IejMutq3I

(Wanweaw is also a film director. Her films include APPLICATION (2007, A+/A))

7.Muttana Cheuweerachon (Neung), who is Tossapol’s girlfriend, looked at Wanweaw’s cartoon, then cooked some food for Tossapol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RJp58Rlgas

--I watched the performance of Tanapol three times. First, I watched it without sound, then I watched it while simultaneously listening to the drum and guitar music, and then I watched it while listening to the piano music. I like the second time the most.

--I think this kind of “art inspired by art” is very interesting. Maybe this is a kind of LIMITLESS CINEMA. This kind of things reminds me of:

1.The common form of it may be movie posters inspired by movies.

2.Some painters are inspired by films and filmmakers, such as Kirsten Everberg, who seems to be inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky.
http://www.artnet.com/artist/423916991/kirsten-everberg.html

3.The spontaneous performance of Dujdao Vadhanakorn in MEMOMENT (2009). Her performance seemed to be instantly inspired by the music of a band called “The Cucumber the Killer” and the film of Manussa Vorasingha, which was shown simultaneously on the wall behind her performance space.

4.The project FROM (DIFFERENT) HORIZONS OF ROCKSHELTER: BREAKING THROUGH THE LINES OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL METHODS, PHRASES IN ANTHROPOLOGY, AND MYTHS IN ARTS (2008)

This project used an anthropological and archaeological event—the discovery of an ancient culture in a rural area in Thailand—to inspire some artists to make different forms of art works, including photography, performance, sculpture, installation, drawings, paintings, and a documentary.
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2008/09/from-differen-horizons-of-rockshelter.html

5.BANYAN PROJECT, which has something very similar to SHE IS READING NEWSPAPER PROJECT, because in BANYAN PROJECT, an art work made by the first artist will inspire the second artist to create a different art work, and the second art work will inspire the third artist to create another different art work, and so on…
http://www.banyan-project.de/

6.Video responses, which may include:

6.1 TWO WORLDS IN ONE WORLD (2004, Prap Boonpan, A+)
I guess Prap made this film to respond to THE SIAM RENAISSANCE (2004, Surapong Pinijkhar, A+)

6.2 REMAKE-ABLE PROJECT, which had many Thai directors remake films made by other Thai directors, or make new films inspired by the old ones. This project includes

6.2.1 Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit made LIFE IS SHORT 2 (2008, A-), inspired by Tossapol Boonsinsukh’s film.

6.2.2 Winai Kitcharoen made THE NIGHT SHE LOST (2008, A-), inspired by DEK LONG (Tanwarin Sukhapisit, A-)

6.2.3 Chakorn Chaipreecha made THE TIME OF UNHAPPINESS (2008, A-), inspired by THE TIME OF HAPPINESS (Patchara Eaimtrakul, B+ )

6.2.4 Tanwarin Sukhapisit made PENGUIN (2008, A-), inspired by Nawapol’s film.

6.2.5 Patchara Eaimtrakul made MAI PAI RANGSIT (2008, A), inspired by MAI PAI RANGSIT (RANGSIT LOVE STORY) (2006, Chakorn Chaipreecha, A+)

6.2.6 Theepisit Mahaneeranon made CLOUD (2008, A), inspired by MY SWEET CLOUD (2008, Winai Kitcharoen, A-)

6.2.7 Tossapol Boonsinsukh made SAEN NAN (SO LONG) (2008, A), inspired by TEXAS SOMYOT MASSACRE: ULTIMATE WEAPON (2006, Nathan Homsup + Dhan Lhaow). This is the weirdest, because SAEN NAN seems to have no connection with TEXAS SOMYOT MASSACRE at all.

6.2.8 Professional Dry Cleaner (which includes Nathan Homsup and Dhan Lhaow) made CENSORSHIT! FATHER AND SON (2008, A+), inspired by CENSORSHIT! FATHER AND SON (2007, Theepisit Mahaneeranon).

6.3 Video letters between Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa and Nok Paksnavin

6.3.1 FROM SHUMAN TO PARISUTH: HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF (2009)
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090415/entry

6.3.2 FROM PARISUTH TO SHUMAN: ENDING THE ENDLESS (2009)
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090420/3-tales-of-two-cities

6.3.3 FROM SHUMAN TO PARISUTH: TALES OF THE TWO CITIES (2009)

Thank you very much for your suggestions, Tossapol. I just experienced the three elements at the same time—watching the performance of Tanapol and listening to the piano and the drum+guitar at the same time. And it is amazing. The performance of Tanapol is not just a dance any more. It becomes something paranormal. Suddenly the clip becomes surreal. The weirdly discordant soundtrack turns the performance clip into something so powerful. Maybe you should make a film with an extremely discordant soundtrack like this one.

In conclusion, this is what I feel:

1.The clip of Tanapol alone = something strange

2.The clip of Tanapol + the piano soundtrack = something stranger

3.The clip of Tanapol + the drum+guitar soundtrack = a very enjoyable dance clip

4.The clip of Tanapol + the drum+guitar soundtrack + the piano soundtrack = my truly sublime experience

I also want to add that actually the working in the BANYAN PROJECT is like this:

1.The first artist creates the first art work.

2.A group of people in a workshop creates the second art work inspired by the first art work.

3.The second group of people in the second workshop creates the third art work inspired by either the first or the second art work.

4.And so it continues like this

This is my reply to Harrytuttle in my English-only blog:
http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2009/05/05/art-inspired-by-art/

I’m not sure when Tossapol will have free time to make a feature film. In his interview, he said that he has become a full-time employee in a company, and that means he rarely has free time now. He doesn’t have time to compose any new songs and he only has ideas about films he wants to make, but doesn’t know if or when he will be able to make them. I think his problems are like the problems other Thai short filmmakers experience, which is-- “you don’t earn any money by making the films you want to make, so you have to have a job to earn your living, but when you have a job, you have no time left any more”. I guess that’s why some Thai short filmmakers I like in the past only made films for several years and then disappeared from the independent film circle.

However, this is a new short film by Tossapol called SUMMER STORM (2009):

สำหรับ Banyan project น่าสนใจมากเลยนะครับ
เป็นงานในระดับ "โลกของเรา" เลย ช่วงนี้นอกจากไม่ได้ดูหนัง งานศิลปะก็ไม่ได้ดูเลยครับ รู้สึกแห้งเหี่ยว :)

I also haven't visited many art exhibitions lately because of the hot weather. I suddenly melt under the sun whenever I walk out of any department stores. Hahaha.

The BANYAN PROJECT is truly fascinating. In some cases, I even prefer the second or the third art work to the first art work. For example, I prefer the children's school play in Varanasi to Radulovic's TREES.
