WFFBKK DAY 3

WFFBKK DAY 3

1.KOSMOS (2010, Reha Erdem, Turkey, A++++++++++)

2.INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD (2010, Tanwarin Sukkhapisit, Thailand, A+++++)

3.COLD WATER OF THE SEA (2010, Paz Fábrega, Costa Rica, A+++++)

4.MEMORIES OF A BURNING TREE (2010, Sherman Ong, Tanzania, A+++++)

5.TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STARS (2010, Lin Cheng Sheng, Taiwan, A+)

--I like it very much that INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD does not have a feel-good ending. The character of the daughter makes a very right decision at the end, because she decides that she doesn't mind at all that her boyfriend is a male prostitute who can be both top and bottom. I would make a decision like that, too.

The atmosphere of the film is like THE BEAUTIFUL WASHING MACHINE or some Malaysian indie films. It looks minimal. The house, or the dining table area in the house, does not seem to be really lived-in. It looks too clean, as clean as the restaurant with no customers in AFTERNOON TIMES (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, A++++++++++). But maybe it is because there is only the father who really uses that space in INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD, while the son and daughter normally avoid the dining table space.

The orgy scene reminds me of the ending of ODETE (2005, João Pedro Rodrigues), while the story about the father and daughter having sex with the same guy reminds me of the conflicting sexual relationships in films such as JAMÓN, JAMÓN (1992, Bigas Luna).

My most favorite scene in the film may be the scene in which the son asks whether he will die or not if he jumps from the bridge, and his handsome friend answers that he will not die because the friend will jump to help him. It is one of the most romantic scenes in Thai films for me.

I also like the face of the female owner of the resort in Pai in INSECTS IN THE BACKYARD very much. The expression on her face looks very funny while she is drinking with her guests.

--Favorite Turkish films

(in alphabetical order)

1.ANGEL'S FALL (2005, Semih Kaplanoglu)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431259/

2.AUTUMN (2008, Ozcan Alper)

3.CLOUDS IN MAY (1999, Nuri Bilge Ceylan)

4.FOTOGRAF (2001, Kazim Öz)

5.THE GIRL WITH THE RED SCARF (1978, Atif Yilmaz)

6.INNOCENCE (1997, Zeki Demirkubuz)

7.I, SOLDIER (2005, Köken Ergun)

8.KOSMOS (2010, Reha Erdem)

9.MOTHERLAND HOTEL (1987, Ömer Kavur)

10.SUMMER BOOK (2008, Seyfi Teoman)

11.WAITING FOR THE CLOUDS (2003, Yesim Ustaoglu)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418309/

--PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY reminds me of LISTENER'S TALE (2007, Arghya Basu, India, A+++++++++++++++), because what makes me worship these two films are similar—the combination between images of empty landscape and ambient music which extremely stirs my imagination.

The last part of PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY gives me the ultimate blissful experience. It is the same kind of experience I get when I saw BIRTH OF THE SEANEMA (2004, Sasithorn Ariyavicha), WINDOWS (1999, Apichatpong Weerasethakul), FIREFLIES (2005, Chawit Waewsawangwong), or from listening to such songs as TÄSSÄ MAASSA KUN NÄIN MAKAILEN by Kemialliset Ystävät.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbd71lG5pXc

The last part of the film, which shows an image of the sea for about five minutes, is as extremely beautiful as a painting. It unintentionally makes me contemplate about death. PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY, which traces the flow of water from high moutains, through the cities, to the sea, unintentionally makes me think about human life, and what the hero of KOSMOS says. He says that every man, good or bad, pure or corrupted, will die. Maybe it is like the water in PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY, which flows through beautiful landscape (happy times) and ugly surroundings (unhappy times), and ends up in the vast ocean (death).

Is PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY a message film like OCEANS (2009, Jacques Perrin + Jacques Cluzaud), HOME (2009, Yann Arthus-Bertrand), OUR DAILY BREAD (2005, Nikolaus Geyrhalter), or IN COMPARISON (2009, Harun Farocki)? Maybe, maybe not. But I don't care about its message. The only thing I care is the blissful experience I get from its images and its sound.

The reason why I like ON THE COAST (2010, Merve Kayan + Zeynep Dadak, A+) the least in GUTS SHORT PROGRAMME 1 is nearly the same reason why I worship PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY. I hate crowded beaches and crowded markets. I love empty beaches, especially the empty beach in AGATHA AND THE UNLIMITED READINGS (1981, Marguerite Duras).

I also love the reflections of the neon lights on the surface of water in PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY very much. I think these images are as beautiful as a painting, too.

(Thanks to Graiwoot for telling me about this song.)

Maybe Katy Perry is partly inspired by FIREWORKS (1947, Kenneth Anger, A+++++), which also presents gays, the assault on the street, and fireworks from a sexual organ (it's the penis firework in Anger's film). Hahaha.

--This is what Barbara Wurm wrote about CORNEILLE-BRECHT in Senses of Cinema:
http://www.sensesofcinema.com/2010/festival-reports/vienna-international-film-festival/
" Another radically sublime lesson in remobilising the “demos” was held by Jean-Marie Straub together with Cornelia Geiser in Corneille – Brecht. A woman at the doorstep of a Parisian balcony, reciting verses by Corneille. Women sitting in a living room chair one after the other, reading Brecht’s Verhör des Lukullus. The art of speaking texts in combination with breaking the linearity of expression has left the mythological Pavese territory and moved on to the ancient world of imperialism. For both Corneille and Brecht, Rome was the allegorical incarnation of the monstrosity of power, and Straub’s reading session in modern-day Paris only underlines the actuality of the need for political antagonism. One strong voice is enough to evoke Brecht’s vengeful choir of slaves and shadows – no one fears the king any more, sovereignty is shaken to the ground."

THE THIRD DIMENSION (2008, Tree Apiroom)

I like the synopsis of THE THIRD DIMENSION (2008, Tree Apiroom) very much:

SAME BLOOD (1992, Chainoi Rujiroj, A+)

SAME BLOOD (สายเลือดเดียวกัน) (1982, Chainoi Rujiroj, A+), starring Sorapong Chatree, Kraisorn Sanganun, and Suchada E-am.

I have heard that this film may be inspired by AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY (1977, Manmohan Desai), but I think SAME BLOOD is very different from the original Indian version, because SAME BLOOD focuses on the incest relationship, which I guess doesn't exist in AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY.

You can watch AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY here:

DISSOLUTION (2010, Nina Menkes, A++++++++++)

DISSOLUTION (2010, Nina Menkes) will be shown in the World Film Festival of Bangkok 2010
http://www.worldfilmbkk.com/theprograms_sections.php

Here is my thought on DISSOLUTION (A++++++++++)

I like this film very much, especially its surreal, dreamlike/nightmarish quality. I just watched it one time, and still can't understand many things about it. I think I need to re-watch it again and need to talk with some cinephile friends before I can begin to understand a little bit about it.

What impresses me the most in my first viewing is the scenes in which the various female characters stare into the camera or stare at the viewers. I can't recall having seen this kind of technique before. These scenes give me some strange feelings. I particularly like the weary eyes of the woman in the bar. These women are not just the objects that the viewers look at. They also look back at you.

The film is full of many impressive scenes, especially the "animal" scenes, the various scenes in which something is breaking, the scene in which the camera is waiting outside the door while the murder is taking place, the scene in which the man finds the ring in the fish, the scene in which the man does something-I-don't-understand on the roof of the building, the scene in which the man is walking in something like a dark labyrinth near the end of the film, and the extremely memorable ending.

What surprises me in my first viewing is that there are many characters I assumed would forge a kind of loving relationship with the protagonist, but that doesn't happen. I assumed that the woman at the post office and the man might fall in love with each other, but it turns to be the opposite. I assumed the same thing with the girl in the building, but that does not happen. I assumed that the man and the two girls who walk past each other at night might have a friendly conversation, because they seem to mutually like each other, but they don't really talk to each other. I assumed that the man might begin to have a relationship with another man in the bar, but their conversation turns to be awkward. Apart from some metaphysical talking with his friends and his relationship with the kind housekeeper, the protagonist in this film seems to float around in an unfriendly world. The world is hostile to him, and he is also hostile to the world. I like the way the film portrays this unfriendly atmosphere very much. I feel as if the unfriendly atmosphere in this film slowly weighs on me and suffocates me.

I also like the use of two-colored subtitles in this film, and the juxtaposition of the image of a lying horse with the image of the sleeping protagonist is very intriguing.

I think another interesting thing in this film is that the protagonist is very unlikeable. I think most viewers can't sympathize with this protagonist, especially after he killed the woman. I think a film with this kind of protagonist is challenging.

My highly recommended films for the EU Film Festival are LITTLE GIRL BLUE (2007, Alice Nellis, Czech), THE PRANK (2009, Péter Gárdos, Hungary), VENICE (2010, Jan Jakub Kolski, Poland), ECCENTRICITIES OF A BLONDE-HAIRED GIRL (2009, Manoel de Oliveira), and THESIS (1996, Alejandro Amenábar)

I saw THESIS and like it a lot. I haven't seen any films by Jan Jakub Kolski, but I have heard his names many times. I like films by Alice Nellis, Péter Gárdos, and Manoel de Oliveira very much.

I just saw LETTERS TO FATHER JACOB (2009, Klaus Härö, Finland, A+/A) today. Many people like it a lot. There was a big applause after the film had ended. But I think the film tries too much to be "touching". It really touches many viewers' hearts, but not mine.

UNDER THE STARS (2007, Félix Viscarret, Spain, A-) is an entertaining film. I think it's too "feel-good" for me.
