THE FORCE OF DESTINY (Alexander Kluge)

Alexander Kluge

YAMISHIBAI

DOUBLE BILL FILM WISH LIST: SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN

Double Bill Film Wish List (continued)

7.SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN (2013, Theeraphat Ngathong, 26.09min)

+

LE CAMION (1977, Marguerite Duras)

+

DANGER (DIRECTOR’S CUT) (2008, Chulayarnnon Siriphol, 14min)

+

A MISCHIEVOUS SMILE LIGHTS UP HER FACE (2009, Christelle Lheureux)

+

CORNEILLE-BRECHT OR ROME, THE SOLE OBJECT OF MY RESENTMENT (2009, Jean-Marie Straub + Cornelia Geiser)

I want to screen these films together, because SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN reminds me of the other four films. What I like very much in SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN includes:

1.The fact that it presents some people reading books or texts like LE CAMION and CORNEILLE-BRECHT.

2.The fact that it requires the imagination of the viewers to help complete the film. The film doesn’t show the images which tell the story directly. Sometimes we see only the back of the readers. Sometimes we see the texts on the screen. Sometimes we see some students in present-time uniform unconvincingly playing kings and princes in the ancient time. What we see on the screen and hear from the film arouse us to imagine other images in our heads. This is the technique which can be compared to the ones employed in LE CAMION, A MISCHIEVOUS SMILE LIGHTS UP HER FACE, and CORNEILLE-BRECHT.

In LE CAMION, we never see the truck driver and the female hitchhiker. We must imagine the faces of these two main characters by ourselves, inspired by what Marguerite Duras and Gerard Depardieu say onscreen.

In A MISCHIEVOUS SMILE LIGHTS UP HER FACE, we are also aroused to imagine some images by ourselves, while listening to some characters talking about THE BIRDS (1963, Alfred Hitchcock).

In CORNEILLE-BRECHT, we see and hear a woman reciting a text written by Pierre Corneille and a text written by Bertolt Brecht. We must picture the ancient Rome in our own head.

3.What is important is not only what is said, but also how it is said. In SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN, what is important is how awkwardly some students read the texts using old Thai language. In CORNEILLE-BRECHT, how the woman recites the texts is fascinating for me.

4.What is important is not only the story, but also the comments on the story. SAMAKKEE-PET-KAMCHAN does not only tell the story about the downfall of a king in the past, but it also analyzes this story, what kinds of verses this story is told, and how usefulness this story is. This reminds me of LE CAMION, in which Duras and Depardieu comment on the story they are reading. It also reminds me of DANGER (DIRECTOR’S CUT), which includes both the story and the vicious comments on the story.

DOUBLE BILL FILM WISH LIST 1-6

You can read about LE CAMION in Thai here:

HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA (1976, Marguerite Duras, A+)

HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA (1976, Marguerite Duras, A+)

Not as captivating as INDIA SONG (1975, Marguerite Duras, A+30), but much more depressing. While in INDIA SONG the voices can invoke images from the past to appear before our eyes in most scenes, in HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA the voices lose that power. The voices here can only inspire us to recall the images in INDIA SONG, or inspire us to imagine some images by ourselves. Our eyes can only see  the truth or the true state of the places now. The images we see remind us of the fact that the story we hear is about something happening many decades ago, and what we see is assumed to be the places where these things happened.  These places used to be so beautiful, so splendorous, when Anne-Marie Stretter was still alive, when love and passion were still in the air. Now these places are in ruins, the people are dead, the love and passion from the past may be gone, or may still be floating in the air, like spirits.

When I saw HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA, I was overwhelmed by the feeling that everything is temporary. Our life, our love, our passion, our dance, our cry, our suffering may look extremely significant to us now. But in a few decades after this, all of this will evaporate, turn into ruins, or become ashes.

Technically HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA reminds me of the film MANUS CHANYONG’S ONE NIGHT AT TALAENGGAENG ROAD (2008, Paisit Panpruegsachart, 38min), which shows the places in Ayuthaya in the present time, while the voiceover tells us about a political struggle in Ayuthaya in the past. Both films arouse us to imagine some images in the past by ourselves. But while MANUS CHANYONG’S ONE NIGHT AT TALAENGGAENG ROAD makes us think about the political aspect of the film, HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA overwhelms me with sadness. It reminds me that I will die, everyone I love will die, every place I visit or stay will turn into ruins. But the sun will still shine, and the sea will still rush to shore after we have been dead for so many years.

INDIA SONG made me want to stop dancing or going to nightclubs many years ago. The tiredness of the characters in INDIA SONG when they dance and switch their partners from one to another somehow made me feel tired of doing the same thing. HER VENETIAN NAME IN DESERTED CALCUTTA makes me want to stop holding on to many things. Now when I see the place I live in, I not only see its present state, but also its ruins in the future.

MARGUERITE DURAS AND LE CAMION

BAXTER VERA BAXTER (1977, Marguerite Duras) and LE CAMION (1977, Marguerite Duras) will be screened at Thammasat University Library this Sunday.

Here is an excerpt of what Duras said about the truck driver and the woman in LE CAMION. It comes from the book DURAS BY DURAS:

“I don’t know where I’m going in LE CAMION. The woman in the truck doesn’t know either. And it doesn’t matter to either of us.

I didn’t know anything about this woman. Nothing except this: I knew there was a woman at a bend in the road. I saw this road near the English Channel, on the way to the Hague, and she was waiting for a truck and for me. Just that, for several weeks. I didn’t work on the text. I knew that whatever it was, it would be swept away in the shooting. That the woman and the text would not coincide prior to the film. That the woman would only begin to exist with the film, simultaneously with the film’s unfolding.

More than that, I knew that the woman needed the film in order to begin to exist. Before the film, I see only her waiting. I know how to love her. I am attracted to her.”

“This woman without a face, without an identity, degraded in class, who may even be an escapee from a mental institution, who claims she’s the mother of all the dead Jewish children at Auschwitz, or believes she is Portuguese or an Arab, or from Mali, who reinvents everything she’s been taught—this woman, for me, is open to the future, If she’s mad, so much the better, let everyone be mad like her.”

“What I know about Vera Baxter is that her existence has a completely reassuring, normal appearance, and that she should be recognized everywhere as the perfect woman and mother—that’s what scares me. It’s not the woman of LE CAMION who frightens me, it’s Vera Baxter. The woman in LE CAMION is not circumscribed by any identity. She’s broken with all possible identities, she is nothing more than a hitchhiker. Some have a theoretical practice, Marxist or some other, at their disposal. She has only the practice of hitchhiking.”

“The driver of LE CAMION adheres forever to a solution proposed by the French Communist Party. He kills all spirit of freedom in himself. How do you get to that point, to accepting an assumption of responsibility by political and union organizations? It is this problem of the proletariat that’s posed in the film. The truck driver is defined by absolute alienation. How did the enlisted working class get to that point? To the rejection of the spirit of May, 1968? To this fundamental refusal of life, of living? To be an official member of the French Communist Party is to be apolitical. “

“He doesn’t have the ability to listen deeply, he can’t listen at all, He is rotten with orders. Orders are killing him. He has an answer to everything, including her madness—to her love, if you will. It’s completely a speech of love I’m talking about there, and he passes judgement on it as he would a logical argument.”

“The guy in the truck has, is only meant to have, only one definition. He has two strict allegiances: to a very scholarly syndicalism, and a pseudo-revolutionary Stalinist party. And outside of that, beyond these two affiliations, he is nothing, he is in fact without an answer. He tries the whole time to bring the woman into his world which is a closed place, a place of asphyxiation. I know this world, I was in the French Communist Party for eight years.”

The guy in this photo is the image that comes up in my mind when I hear the words “the truck driver”. Hahaha :-)

DELETE (2013, Tanayot Sonsoi, A+15)

DELETE (2013, Tanayot Sonsoi, A+15)

WE DON’T CARE FOR DEMOCRACY (2010, John Torres, Philippines) ด้วย
