AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY (2007, PRAP BOONPAN, A+++++)

FILMS SEEN ON FRIDAY 27 JULY 2007

1.LOVE CONQUERS ALL (2006, Tan Chui Mui, Malaysia, A++++++++++)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0877347/
This film helps me overcome some unnecessary desires.

2.PINGPONG (2006, Matthias Ludhardt, Germany, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800159/
This film makes me think about something I did in the past: using somebody as a tool to respond to another person.

3.SHORTBUS (2006, John Cameron Mitchell, A+)
Boss from Screenout Webboard gave an interesting comment on this film. He said that this film is not actually about sex, but it’s about how people connect to one another.

The opening shot of this film which shows the view of New York from above reminds me of the opening shot in PRIVATE FEARS IN PUBLIC PLACES (2006, Alain Resnais, A+). Both films also deal with lonely souls.

4.SUELY IN THE SKY (2006, Karim Ainouz, Brazil, A+)
I like the songs used in this film very much.

5.THE BET COLLECTOR (2006, Jeffrey Jeturian, Philippines, A+/A)
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0422357/
I like the protagonist in this film very much. The ending is quite good and makes me think about the fortunate and unfortunate events in life.

FILMS SEEN ON SATURDAY 28 JULY 2007

1.GRINDHOUSE: PLANET TERROR (2007, Robert Rodriguez, A+)
I like the twin sisters in this film very much.

2.BELLE TOUJOURS (2006, Manoel de Oliveira, Portugal, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475224/
There are many things I like in this movie, including the old woman who yearns for the handsome barman.

3.URANYA (2006, Costas Kapakas, Greece, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0863041/
I like the ending of this film very much. It’s a happy ending, but it is not too sentimental.

4.THE BEST OF TIMES (2002, Chang Tso-Chi, Taiwan, A+/A)
I like the location of this film very much, and I like that this film does not actually affirms family values, but it shows many bad things people in the same family can do to each other.

5.LUXURY CAR (2006, Wang Chao, China, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0810954/
This film makes me think that the life in China tends to resemble more and more the life in Hong Kong in the past. The violence in the story of this film is not shown graphically, but it is very effective.

6.BEYOND THE CALL (2006, Adrian Belic, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799941/
I hope this film will inspire people to do good things.

--In summary, this is the most satisfying international film festival I have ever experienced. The films shown are exactly what I love. I encountered almost no problems in the festival. Everything is nearly perfect for me in this festival. I would like to thank the organizers and everyone involved in this festival for making me feel as if I was in heaven.

--On Sunday I also went to see many Thai short films. There are many films that I like, including NGAN LUKLUN NAI NGAN RUENREANG (I think the title of this film can be translated as AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY), which deals with a group of people talking about political problems in Thailand.

AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY (2007, Prap Boonpan, A++++++++++), in my very personal point of view, is one of the most important Thai films ever made. It is one of the most daring Thai films I have ever seen. Seeing this film makes me feel as if I was slapped in the face 30 times, but what is more important is that it makes me feel I truly deserve this punishment. It’s a film which makes me feel ashamed of myself, makes me feel guilty. It is passionate, thought-provoking, sincere, straightforward, uncompromising, and fearless. This film is what Thailand really needs right now.

http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2007/07/surrealism-and-cinema-artificial-night.html#comments

“In entering the black surrealist tradition, however, we are perhaps in danger of entirely overlooking Breton’s ‘provocative openness towards poetry’ [Jean Schuster’s words] — and its particular resonance within movies and popular culture generally. The surrealism of George Herriman’s Krazy Kat comics, of Daffy Duck cartoons, of Mad magazine in the 1950s or of Sam Raimi’s delicious horror film Evil Dead II (1987) offers a special kind of imaginative liberation. While often blackly humorous and full of social rage, this surrealism is also light, airy and supremely comic.”

LIFE IS SHORT II (2006, A+)

DREAMS (2005, MOHAMED AL DARADJI, A+++++)

FILMS SEEN ON THURSDAY 26 JULY 2007

1.DREAMS (2005, Mohamed Al Daradji, Iraq, A++++++++++)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0854114/
This film is also an unblinking look at hell. I think this film might not be aesthetically great. It lacks the harmony or the smooth flow often found in Iranian films. But for a country like Iraq, I think this kind of imperfection suits this film very well. The weak point of this film is really the strong point. What I love in this film is the fact that it really portrays its own country, portrays the madness, the injustice, the sad fate, the struggle, the rough lives of its own people.

As for now, this film is my third most favorite film in this festival, behind CRY IN SILENCE and LOOK OF LOVE.

After seeing DREAMS, I think it would be good if someone saw four films successively as follows:

1.1 BEAUFORT
1.2 DREAMS
1.3 THE MARK OF CAIN
1.4 CRY IN SILENCE

If these four films are shown together in a program, this program might be called A JOURNEY INTO HELL.

2.MANORO (2006, Brillante Mendoza, Philippines, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0922499/
For more information about MANORO, please read:
http://oggsmoggs.blogspot.com/2006/11/manoro-2006.html

I like the face of the leading actress of this film very much. This film makes me feel as if I was walking alongside the characters.

The look of this film is another thing that I like. It seems so different from other films. The film looks as if it was made 30 years ago.

3.BEAUFORT (2007, Joseph Cedar, Israel, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758732/
I like the tension in this film very much. I think this dramatic anti-war film is somehow as tense as some sci-fi films such as ALIEN. The soundtrack is very good.

4.WHITE PALMS (2006, Szabolcs Hajdu, Hungary, A+/A)
http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117929623.html?categoryid=31&cs=1
This film has many things that are unpredictable for me.

รู้สึกว่าการตัดสินใจที่ผิดพลาดที่สุดของดิฉันในเทศกาลนี้ก็คือการเลือกดู CATS OF MIRIKITANI แทน THE EDGE OF HEAVEN

I am very glad today to know that IN THE CITY OF SYLVIA by Jose Luis Guerin is in competition in Venice Film Festival this year, and CLEOPATRA by Julio Bressane from Brazil will be shown out of competition. 1.CRY IN SILENCE (2006, J. G. Biggs, A+)
This film is like an unblinking look at hell.

2.LOOK OF LOVE (2006, Yoshiharu Ueoka, Japan, A+)
This film makes me laugh the most since I saw WHAT HAPPENED TO MAGDALENA JUNG (1983, Christoph Schlingensief, Germany, A+) late last year.

3.BEFORE WE FALL IN LOVE AGAIN (2006, James Lee, Malaysia, A+)
I like the unnaturalness and unromanticness of this film very much.

I feel as if I was the protagonist of this film.

5.THE BIRD HOUSE (2006, Khoo Eng Yow, Malaysia, A+)

--I think the best film in the festival that I have seen so far might be OUR DAILY BREAD, but it is not my most favorite because it does not make me feel very personally involved. My most favorite films are usually the ones that I feel very personally involved, such as CRY IN SILENCE which makes me think about the life of my friend (I pray every day that the parents of my friend should get divorced soon. I hate my friend’s father very very much.), A WANDERING BRIDE which makes me think about some painful experiences, THE BIRD HOUSE which makes me think about my life, and THE MARK OF CAIN which makes me think about my guilt.

RAIN DOGS (2006, HO YUHANG, A+++++)

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN NANOGUY’S BLOG
http://nanoguy.bloggang.com

1.RAIN DOGS (2006, Ho Yuhang, A+)

2.REQUIEM (2006, Hans-Christian Schmid, A+)

2.1 23 (1998, A-)
2.2 IT’S A JUNGLE OUT THERE (1995, B+)
2.3 CRAZY (2000, C+)

3.THE PASSENGER (2005, Eric Caravaca, A+)

4.PLOY (2007, Pen-ek Ratanaruang, A+)

5.HATSU-KOI (2006, Hanawa Yukinari, A+)

6.THE PAGE TURNER (2006, Denis Dercourt, A+)

7.FRACTURE (2007, Gregory Hoblit, A)

8.THE EMBALMER (2002, Matteo Garrone, A)

9.LA MOME (2007, Olivier Dahan, A)

10.SICK NURSES (2007, Thodsapol Siriwiwat + Piraphan Laoyont, A)

11.IMMORTEL (AD VITAM) (2004, Enki Bilal, A-)

12.CRAZY STONE (2006, Ning Hao, A-)

13.TRANSFORMERS (2007, Michael Bay, A-)

14.SHREK THE THIRD (2007, Chris Miller, A-)

15.OCEAN’S THIRTEEN (2007, Steven Soderbergh, A-)

16.FIREWALL (2006, Richard Loncraine, A-/B+)

FILM AND REAL LIFE 4: TURISTAS (2007, JOHN STOCKWELL)

THE DESCENT (2005, Neil Marshall, A+)

KING LEAR (2007, NINART BOONPOTONG, A+/A)

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN NEW SCREENOUT WEBBOARD
http://www.xq28.net/wow/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=192&start=150

AMY TAUBIN IN FILM COMMENT AND SUNDANCE 1991

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN BIOSCOPE WEBBOARD
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=71.180

(some parts of what I wrote in Thai are translated into English)

http://w3.mict.go.th/ci/blocked.html

http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/mj07/index.htm

http://artforum.com/inprint/issue=200704

TIEXI DISTRICT: WEST OF THE TRACKS (2003) ด้วย
http://www.cinema-scope.com/cs31/int_koehler_wangbing.html

http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/ma07/sundance1.htm

“No wonder then that Little Miss Sunshine, a sitcom passing as a road movie, with its shrill pleas for our affection, banal family values, and lousy production values, won the Audience Award and was acquired by canny Fox Searchlight, which knew how to push it to an audience already primed by the similarly sitcom-styled but more charming My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

I’m particularly interested in what Amy Taubin wrote about Sundance Film Festival in 1991. This is what she wrote in FILM COMMENT, MARCH/APRIL 2007
http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/ma07/sundance1.htm

“And indeed there were. In the competition lineup alone were Richard Linklater’s Slacker, Todd Haynes’s Poison, Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust, Yvonne Rainer’s Privilege, Hal Hartley’s Trust, Caveh Zahedi’s A Little Stiff, Jon Jost’s All the Vermeers in New York, Joseph H. Vasquez’s Hangin’ with the Homeboys, and that’s not all. I don’t love every one of those films, but together, they certainly seemed as if they were the foundation for a serious independent-film movement.”

Below are some details about the films she mentioned:

1.DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305729212/imdb-adbox/
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B09S4GX1L._SS500_.jpg

synopsis from Amazon.com

”Working with a theme and history that's obviously dear to her heart, first-time writer-director Julie Dash's exquisitely alive film chronicles the last days of the Gullah, an Americanized West African people in danger of losing their identity. Dash makes up for some overly schematic dialogue and an occasionally pokey pace with some strong performances (particularly Cora Lee Day as the sternly matriarchal Nana) and an absolutely wonderful visual sense (kudos should also go to her ace cinematographer Arthur Jafa, whose dazzlingly sumptuous imagery surely inspired Jonathan Demme's later Beloved). A rapturously textured, wholly mesmerizing glimpse into the Gullah culture. --Andrew Wright “

2. PRIVILEGE

This is what FILM OPTIMIST wrote about this film:
http://members.fortunecity.com/vanessa77/priv.htm

“Privilege begins with a documentary style exploration of the taboo subject of menopause and goes on to explore the historical medicalisation and trivialisation of women as they move beyond their child bearing years. Clearly ageism is a factor in this, but Privilege doesn't take on a pat victim mentality in it's exploration, rather widening it's gaze to consider the many competing forms of discrimination that existง in our society.

Privilege ingeniously shifts from documentary to fiction and back as it plays the effects of ageism, sexism and racism off against one another.

Rainer's work takes under the skin key cultural theories such as Julia Kristeva's writings on abjection and Michel Foucault's theories on power and heirarchy.”

3.HANGIN’ WITH THE HOMEBOYS
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000TWMW0/imdb-adbox/
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/511DNM312ML._SS500_.jpg

Synopsis from amazon.com

“Four Bronx buddies spend an evening cruising for girls and getting into trouble as they tool around the South Bronx. But as episodic and aimless as this film seems, it is built around strong performances by its four leads: Mario Joyner, Nestor Serrano, John Leguizamo and Doug E. Doug. But writer-director Joseph Vasquez gives each guy a distinctive personality and uses their various adventures to examine just how dead-end life seems to this quartet of black and Hispanic buddies--and which ones have a chance of breaking out. Leguizamo is particularly intriguing as a sensitive type who is looking for an actual relationship with a woman, rather than hit-and-run sex, while Joyner is solid as the voice of reason in the group. And Doug E. Doug has a jack-in-the-box comic energy that's undeniable. --Marshall Fine”

QUEEN OF DIAMONDS (1991, Nina Menkes)

It’s no use for me to describe how greatness RICHARD LINKLATER, TODD HAYNES, HAL HARTLEY, CAVEH ZAHEDI and JON JOST have become. Everybody already knows that. In Sundance 1991, there’s another film that I like very much. It is LITTE NOISES (1992, Jane Spencer, A). And there’s another film that I would like to see very much. It is QUEEN OF DIAMONDS (1991, Nina Menkes)

http://www.imdb.com/Sections/Awards/Sundance_Film_Festival/1991

This is what Dennis Schwartz wrote about QUEEN OF DIAMONDS
http://www.sover.net/~ozus/queenofdiamonds.htm

“A fascinating plotless psychological drama directed by Nina Menkes ("The Bloody Child"), one of the most brilliant and provocative experimental filmmakers today. It stars her sister Tinka Menkes as an unnamed Las Vegas blackjack dealer who seems to be beset by intense personal problems, but never discloses her inner thoughts. Tinka lives in a seedy motel and takes care of a dying old man living there, who might be her uncle. At one point she tries to file a missing person's report for her husband who disappeared three months ago, but changes her mind while at the police station.”

“The centerpiece scene is a 14-minute silent sequence, except for the background sounds, of Tinka dealing blackjack in a rote-like manner at the casino”

MY IMAGINARY FAMILY

My writing below is just a joke. I wrote it in reply to MERVEILLESXX, a famous Thai film blogger ( http://merveillesxx.bloggang.com/ ). He wrote under the topic of MY IDEAL FAMILY, imagining himself as a daughter of MICHAEL HANEKE and NAOMI KAWASE, with CATHERINE BREILLAT as his/her stepmother, ASIA ARGENTO and AOI MIYAZAKI as his/her sisters, and JT LEROY + JOHN ROBINSON as his/her brothers. His real friend, NANOGUY, also wrote under this topic, imagining himself as the son of JOHN WATERS and GONG LI.

The Thai writings under this topic can be read here:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=409.0

This is what I wrote for this topic. It is a nonsensical joke. I hope no one is offended by my writing.

MY IMAGINARY FAMILY

1.My self-imposed name is MARINA DE VAN DAMME.

2.My father is JEAN-MARIE STRAUB. My mother is DANIELE HUILLET.

3.My grandfather is ROBERT BRESSON.

4.My uncles are

4.1 HARUN FAROCKI. He has a son called CHRISTIAN PETZOLD.

4.2 HELLMUTH COSTARD. He and MAGDALENA JETELOVA has a son called PHILIPPE PARRENO.

4.3 LUC DARDENNE

4.4 JEAN-PIERRE DARDENNE

4.5 AKI KAURISMAKI. He has two sons called GUSTAVE DE KERVERN and BENOIT DELEPINE.

5.My aunt is CHANTAL AKERMAN.

6. Our neighbors are

6.1 JAMES BROUGHTON, but after a while, he left our neighborhood, and went to live in THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE where JAMES BENNING and SADIE BENNING also reside.

6.2 TOBA KHEDOORI
http://www.urbanhonking.com/ideasfordozens/archives/2006/10/immense_miniatu.html

6.3 DEREK JARMAN

7. I couldn’t bear living with my parents. I couldn’t bear their austere lifestyles. So I ran away from home when I was seven. I wandered the streets, telling everybody that I was an orphan.

8.Later, I was accepted to live and study in THE EMILY DICKINSON ORPHANAGE. TILDA SWINTON is the headmistress of this school for orphans. This orphanage is under the patronage of BARONESS DELPHINE SEYRIG.

9.Later, I was adopted by LARISSA SHEPITKO and ELEM KLIMOV. My foster father also let me star in his film called COME AND SEE. But I was traumatized when I starred in this film. So I ran away from home again.

10.I wandered the streets until I ran into a cute boy called MATHIEU DEMY. I stalked him and tried to follow him home. I decided to apply to work as a maid in his house, in order to get near him. When I worked as a maid in this house, his parents, AGNES VARDA and JACQUES DEMY, were very kind to me. This was the happiest time of my life.

11.The trouble began when three friends of his parents visited this house. These three friends are CLAUDE CHABROL, NANCY MECKLER, and JEAN-PIERRE DENIS. These three friends told VARDA and DEMY that I was not trustworthy, and they shouldn’t hire me as a maid any more. So I was fired and became a VAGABOND.

12.After wandering the streets for a while, I ran into a skating woman called YVONNE RAINER. She invited me to join her and her friends on a journey in the ship of MADAME X (TABEA BLUMENSCHEIN).

13. I got involved in a big war. Because MADAME X was the enemy of CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW. The boat of MADAME X and the boat of JACK SPARROW had a big fight. I tried to help MADAME X fighting, but I couldn’t fire a shot at WILL TURNER. How can I kill a man with such an angel face?

The boat of MADAME X nearly lost the fight, but suddenly we got help from four other boats . These four boats are

13.1 The boat of ANNA PLANETA (ANNA PRUCNAL, SWEET MOVIE)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072235/

13.2 The boat of CELINE (JULIET BERTO) and JULIE (DOMINIQUE LABOURRIER)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071381/

13.3 The boat of VEDOVA CHING (JUN ICHIKAWA, SINGING BEHIND SCREENS)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327546/

13.4 The boat of ASIA THE INVINCIBLE (BRIGITTE LIN, SWORDSMAN III: THE EAST IS RED)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105655/

14. We won the fight against Captain Jack Sparrow. After this big war, we separated and went on our own ways. I tried to find a new job.

15.I enlisted in the ARMY OF SHADOWS. This secret militant group tried to overthrow the CENSORA government, which did nothing except destroying the freedom of mankind, burning books, and banning films.

16.My commanders are

16.1 ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET

16.2 MICHAEL SHAOWANASAI

16.3 ANNIE SPRINKLE

16.4 CAROLEE SCHNEEMANN
http://www.caroleeschneemann.com/

16.5 VANESSA BEECROFT
http://www.vanessabeecroft.com/

16.6 MARLENE DUMAS

17. I couldn’t fight in this army for a long time, because I am a coward. I resigned from this army, hoping that would save my life, because the evil CENSORA government tried to kill every suspect. I tried to flee from this oppressive country by exiting it via the PAN’S LABYRINTH.

18. Apart from being a coward, I also have another big flaw. I am a hot-tempered person. Someone told me I can achieve calmness of mind if I have a chance to learn from a big guru called KATHARINA SIEVERDING. She lives near the LAKE OF TRANQUILITY. Now I’m searching for this lake to find this guru.

RAMON SALAZAR

This is my comment in MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE blog:
http://memoriesofthefuture.wordpress.com/2007/07/12/new-review-2/

Hey, I just noticed that this post is filed under a new category called WHORING.

I haven’t heard of EL CALENTITO (2005, Chuz Gutierrez) before, but it sounds interesting, because you compared it to Pedro Almodovar’s early works. And I like some of Almodovar’s early works very much, such as PEPI, LUCI, BOM (1980, Pedro Almodovar, A+). In fact, I think I like PEPI, LUCI, BOM the most among Almodovar’s films that I saw. PEPI, LUCI, BOM might not be as great a film as TALK TO HER (2002, Pedro Almodovar, A+). The film is so vulgar, while TALK TO HER, ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, BAD EDUCATION, and VOLVER are so refined. But I still like its vulgarity. However, I’m not very fond of LABYRINTH OF PASSION (1982, Pedro Almodovar, B+). I think it is not as funny as it should be.

I haven’t seen many Spanish films except Almodovar’s. It’s good to know that there are some unknown Spanish films released as DVDs with English subtitles. I think that other Spanish DVDs that I should get hold of are PIEDRAS (2002, Ramon Salazar) and 20 CENTIMETROS (2005, Ramon Salazar), because I have heard that Salazar is also influenced by Almodovar.

MARIANNE BASLER

FILMBO (http://filmbo.blogspot.com/ ) left a comment in my wordpress blog here:
http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/the-beauty-of-rivettes-endings/

This is my reply:

Thank you very much for pointing out about the reference to Rivette’s small audience. I haven’t thought about it before.

Sometimes I think I’m not being fair to VA SAVOIR. I think VA SAVOIR is a very good film, but because it is directed by Rivette, I tend to look at it as “half-empty” (just ‘very good’, but not ‘masterpiece’). But if VA SAVOIR is directed by someone else, I might look at it as “half-full”.

I’m not a film critic, and I judge everything according to my own personal whims. According to my personal tastes, VA SAVOIR is my least favorite of Rivette’s films, but I haven’t seen many films by Rivette yet.

Jacques Rivette’s films in my preferential order:

1.CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1984, A+)

2.UP DOWN FRAGILE (1995, A+)

3.LA BELLE NOISEUSE (1991, A+)

4.GANG OF FOUR (1988, A+)

5.WUTHERING HEIGHTS (1985, A+)

6.SECRET DEFENSE (1998, A+)

7.VA SAVOIR (2001, A)
I think this film lacks some kind of MAGIC I often found in Rivette’s films.

I also saw LE PONT DU NORD (1981), but it was shown without English subtitles, so I don’t know how much I really like it.

The DVDs of PARIS BELONGS TO US (1960), JOAN THE MAID (1994), and THE HISTORY OF MARIE & JULIEN (2003) are available in Bangkok, but I haven’t watched them yet.

--I can’t guess why Rivette made that kind of ending for VA SAVOIR. Yes, it may be because of commercial appeal. Or maybe he wanted to try something different. Or maybe he thought it is the most appropriate ending for this kind of film.

Though I may not love the ending of VA SAVOIR, I have to confess I can’t come up with a better idea on how to end this film.

--Talking with you about VA SAVOIR inspires me to watch the ending of this film again. I found that when I watched this ending for the second time, I like it more than the first time I watched it in 2003. I think it maybe because I know beforehand what the ending will be, so I don’t have false expectation for it.

I think I also have to agree with what A.O. Scott in the New York Times wrote about this film. He wrote that it is resolved with the verve and precision of classic screwball comedy.

What A.O. Scott wrote also can help me guess why I didn’t like this ending the first time I saw it. I think it is because I’m not fond of the kind of “RESOLVED” ending. I prefer unresolved ending. And I think it is because I’m not familiar with classic screwball comedy. I have seen very few classical Hollywood films.

--The ‘resolved’ ending in VA SAVOIR also reminds me of the kind of endings in some Shakespeare’s plays, such as in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST, or A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, when couples are united or something like that. I think I’m not fond of this kind of ending. I tend to prefer the ending in which couples are separated or tragic endings. Hahaha.

I don’t know why I hate happy endings in some films, but love happy endings in other films. The super-happy ending that I really hate is the happy ending in ZATOICHI (2003, Takeshi Kitano, B+), but the super-happy endings that I really love is the ending in CROCODILE DUNDEE (1986, Peter Faiman) and BLUE MOON (2002, Andrea Maria Dusl, Austria, A+).

--I think the DUEL scene between the two guys in VA SAVOIR is quite original. I haven’t seen this kind of scene before. It also reminds me of a scene in UP DOWN FRAGILE, in which Marianne Denicourt is lured to a high place to shoot someone. These two scenes begin with the expectation that someone might be killed, or some sinister things might happen. But both scenes end with very good feelings instead. Maybe this is a kind of Rivette’s touch. Watching these two scenes makes me not surprised why Rivette seems to hate A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, according to his interview in SENSES OF CINEMA.

--I also have to thank you for inspiring me to watch the ending of VA SAVOIR again, because this time I have noticed something I overlooked the first time I saw it. This time I discovered that MARIANNE BASLER also stars in VA SAVOIR. I didn’t pay attention to Marianne Basler at all the first time I saw this film. I was more attracted to Jeanne Balibar and Helene de Fougerolles. But earlier this year I saw GESPENSTER (2005, Christian Petzold, Germany, A+), and Marianne Basler gave a terrific performance in it. GESPENSTER makes Marianne Basler unforgettable to me, but I still didn’t realize that I had seen her before in VA SAVOIR, until this morning when I watched VA SAVOIR again.

FILMS WITH CHALLENGING NARRATIVE STRUCTURES

This is my comment in SUPPOSED AURA blog:
http://supposedaura.blogspot.com/2007/06/scenes-from-parallel-life.html

--DAVE, I’m not sure if you will like OBABA or not. OBABA is the only film by Montxo Armendariz that I have seen. I like the film a lot, but what I like is the structure of the story, which consists of many small stories. So I’m not sure if what I like in this film results from the talent of the director, the screenwriter, or the novelist.

--Mubarak, I envy you because you have seen MUSCLE. I have seen only one film by Hisayasu Sato—AN ARIA ON GAZE. I can’t find any other films by Sato in Bangkok, His films are hard to find here.

I think FILM COMMENT once compared Sato to Alain Robbe-Grillet, and I agree with it. AN ARIA ON GAZE’s storytelling structure reminds me of Robbe-Grillet’s films, because the viewer won’t know for sure

1.if the scene is really happening

2. if the scene is just a dream

3.which character dreams that scene

4. if the scene is just the character’s imagination

5. if the scene is just a part of the character’s novel

6.if the scene happens in the past or present

--There are two other Japanese films that I like very much and I think they have very interesting storytelling structures:

1.KOKKURI (1999, Takahisa Zeze)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119477/

2.A SNAKE OF JUNE (2002, Shinya Tsukamoto)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0330904/

--Talking about this kind of storytelling structure, I also think of some
Thai films, including:

1.PLOY (2007, Pen-ek Ratanaruang)
Reality and dreams are merged into each other very well in this film.

2.BUS-STOP (2004, Tosaporn Mongkol)
This is a gay short film. I think the DVD of this film can be found in Bangkok. So if you are interested in watching this film, you can e-mail me and I can send you the DVD.

3. JIM (PUSSY) (2005, Tosaporn Mongkol)
Since the structure of this short film is so complex, I think I had better not try to describe this film. It’s the kind of film that anyone who has seen it will say, “I don’t know what happen.”

MY FAVORITE FILM ENDINGS

FILMBO ( http://filmbo.blogspot.com ) left a comment in my wordpress blog here:

http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2007/07/13/the-beauty-of-rivettes-endings/#comment-173

This is my reply:

--In fact, I think I feel very ambiguous about the ending of VA SAVOIR. I think the main reason I was disappointed with the ending is just because it is directed by Rivette, not because the ending is bad or not because it is not appropriate for the film.

I ask myself if this film was directed by anyone else other than Rivette, what I would feel about this ending?

If VA SAVOIR was directed by someone else, I think I would feel good about the ending of the film, I would feel the film is tidied up very very nicely at the end, I would think the ending is a little bit impressive, though it is still not my cup of tea.

To sum it up, I think my disappointment is just the result of my expectation for Rivette’s endings. The ending of VA SAVOIR is actually very good. It’s just not what I expected.

--Talking about VA SAVOIR, I would like to add that there are many things I like in VA SAVOIR, including:

1.The opening scene when the light shines on Jeanne Balibar. This opening scene reminds me of another film. It is a Thai film called PRASART (INSANE) (1975, Piak Poster, A+). There’s an early scene in this Thai film in which a face of a female singer is suddenly lighted up. This kind of scene gives me strong feelings.

2.The scene that Balibar goes out onto the roof. The scene before that gives a very claustrophobic feeling, and then she goes out onto the roof. And I feel very very great.

3.The scene when Balibar just discovered the ring very easily. I like this kind of thing in Rivette’s films very much. For ‘this kind of thing’, I mean some mysteries which are solved very very easily. I think in GANG OF FOUR (1988), there is also a scene in which a key is revealed very easily. And in UP DOWN FRAGILE (1995), the characters also discover something hidden in a cupboard by accident, or something like that.

I think my likeness for this kind of thing is relative. One reason why I like it is because it is the opposite of most films. In most films, when there is a secret or mystery, the characters would have to go through many obstacles before the secret or the mystery is revealed. But in Rivette’s universe, you don’t have to risk your life trying to solve these mysteries (excluding SECRET DEFENSE).

To like something just because it is the opposite of most films—this brings to mind my likeness for Chabrol’s films, too. For example, in THE COLOR OF LIES (1999), there is a brutal child murder occurred in the beginning of the film. But instead of paying attention on how to solve the murder or on how to find the murderer, Chabrol just paid attention on something else. Who is the murderer is not important at all in this film. Chabrol does the opposite of most murder mystery movies in this film, and that’s one reason why I like it very much.

--There are many film endings that I like, including:

(WARNING: My memory is very unreliable. I’m not sure if I remember all the endings here correctly. So if you think I wrote anything incorrectly, please tell me.)

1.The ending when the characters’ problems are not solved:

1.1 THE BEAUTIFUL CITY (2004, Asghar Farhadi, Iran, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424434/

1.2 OUR TIMES (2002, Rakhshan Bani Etemad, Iran, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0329560/

1.3 GILANE (2005, Mosen Abdolvahab + Rakhshan Bani Etemad, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450428/

1.4 PRIVATE FEARS IN PUBLIC PLACES (2006, Alain Resnais, A+)

1.5 DIVINE INTERVENTION (2002, Elia Suleiman, A+)

1.6 VOYAGES (1999, Emmanuel Finkiel, A+)

1.7 KNIFE IN THE HEAD (1978, Reinhard Hauff, West Germany, A+)
http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19780101/REVIEWS/801010306/1023

1.8 FOTOGRAF (2001, Kazim Oz, Turkey, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299898/

1.9 INNOCENCE (1997, Zeki Demirkubuz, Turkey, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0128332/

1.10 LOVELY RITA (2001, Jessica Hausner, Austria, A+)

1.11 BERLIN CHAMISSOPLATZ (1980, Rudolf Thome, West Germany, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080430/

1.12 MIKEY AND NICKY (1976, Elaine May, A)

2. The ending which leaves me scratching my head and wonder what the film is all about

2.1 LA BELLE CAPTIVE (1983, Alain Robbe-Grillet, A+)

2.2 POSSESSION (1981, Andrzej Zulawski, A+)

2.3 MULHOLLAND DRIVE (David Lynch, A+)

2.4 BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (1980, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080196/

This case is different, because I think I understand this TV series, except the ending part of it. I think the ending of BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ is GREAT, because it is very surreal, and I don’t understand it at all. Hahaha.

3. The ending which makes me feel very sad

3.1 OSAMA (2003, Siddiq Barmak, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368913/

3.2 ARMY OF SHADOWS (1969, Jean-Pierre Melville, A+)

3.3 BUNNY (2002, Mia Trachinger, A+)

4.The ending which makes me feel very good

4.1 LOVE LETTER (1995, Shunji Iwai, A+)

4.2 AMOUR D’ENFANCE (2001, Yves Caumon, A+)

4.3 THE TEMPEST (1979, Derek Jarman, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081613/
I think I disagree with TIME OUT FILM GUIDE about this film. TIME OUT FILM GUIDE seems to like this film, except the ending. But I like the ending part the most in this film. In my opinion, this film gives a very claustrophobic feeling, until the ending when there is a party with sailors and Elisabeth Welch singing STORMY WEATHER. The feeling that I have when I saw this scene is the same feeling that I have when I saw Jeanne Balibar walked on a roof in VA SAVOIR.

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE seems to like the Elisabeth Welch’s scene, too. He wrote about THE TEMPEST here:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/vine/journal_view.php?journalid=29715&entryid=374535&view=public

But I still like the review in TIME OUT FILM GUIDE very much, because the reviewer pointed out that the early scenes in this movie are like drawings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778). I hadn’t heard of Piranesi before. I like this kind of information very much when I read a film review.

This is a drawing by Piranesi. It’s called DRAWBRIDGE (1945).
