EXTREMELY ECSTATIC EXPERIENCE

Merveillesxx just saw SOMBRE (1998, Philippe Grandrieux) and likes it very much. He asked me to recommend other films which may be comparable to SOMBRE, preferably films which are available as DVDs in Bangkok.

This is my comment in Merveillesxx’ blog:
http://www.bloggang.com/viewdiary.php?id=merveillesxx&month=03-2008&date=10&group=1&gblog=123

Well, I think SOMBRE is actually incomparable. I find it very difficult to think of any other films which may be comparable to SOMBRE. So I think I should just give you some trivia:

--There are at least two bloggers who like Grandrieux or SOMBRE very much. So if you continually read these two blogs, you may get to know some other films which are as great as SOMBRE.

--In Unspoken Cinema’s blog, Philippe Grandrieux’s LA VIE NOUVELLE is categorized as being in the sub-group of films called STYLIZED CONTEMPLATION.

You can find the name of Grandrieux and other interesting directors in this chronology list of films:

Or in this directory:

Or in this updated genealogy chart:

Thx you very much for your useful information ^^

Here is my short comment to Sombre

Sombre (1998, Philippe Grandrieux, A++++++) is my another great cinematic experience. Watching this film is like walking thorugh a very long dark tunnel but feeling a warming delight as well. The film examined the mind of serial killer and presented it in vague and creepy way. In my opinion, it is more romactic than Love Actually but scarier than any horror films I have ever watched. Centainly, it is the movie of the century.

From the list, I've seen COLOR OF POMEGRANATES (1968, Sergei Paradjanov, A+).I buy this DVD because it is Sasithorn Ariyawicha's favorite movie. Frankly, I can't understand the film at all 55555. But it expanded my cinematic perception. Last year, Thai Film Foundation invited me to be a guest speaker, I almost show this film to the student. But I decided to show Divine Intervention instead.

I have bought The Blood of a Poet for a year but not have a chance to see it yet.
