FIREFLIES (CHAWIT WAEWSAWANGWONG, A+++++)

I didn’t have enough time to write down the titles of the films I saw. I want to write about my feelings for each film, but I don’t know when I will have time to do that.

FILMS SEEN BETWEEN 16-29 APRIL 2007

(The grades given here depend on how much I like the films. This always involves how handsomeness the actors are and how stupid I am. Hahaha. There’s nothing serious here. I always change my mind later.)

SOMETHING TO ACCOMPANY ERIC ROHMER OR VIVALDI

--FAVORITE ARTIST FOR THE MOMENT -- SPIRIT CATCHER

THIS BAND IS FROM BELGIUM. THEIR BLOG IS HERE:
http://www.myspace.com/spiritcatcher1

SPIRIT CATCHER GOT INFLUENCES FROM:
Chic/Nile Rodgers&Bernard Edwards, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Zapp, D-Train, George Duke, Skyy, Change, Larry Levan, Giorgio Moroder, Fabrice Lig, John Tejada, Jimpster, Titonton, Morgan Geist and All Detroit Techno artists...

MY FAVORITE TRACKS ARE “SWEET DEAL” AND “CAN’T GET AWAY”. You can listen to the songs in their blog. CAN’T GET AWAY seems like a song made in late 1970’s. I can’t believe this is a new song.

--FAVORITE SONG FOR THE MOMENT – SPRING IS HERE (sung by Nina Simone)

Spring is here

Why doesn’t my heart go dancing

Spring is here

Why isn’t the waltz entrancing

No desire no ambition leads me

Maybe it’s because nobody needs me

Spring is here

Why doesn’t the breeze delight me

Stars appear

Why doesn’t the night invite me

But maybe it’s because nobody loves me

Spring is here I hear

Somebody told me spring is here

This song is sung by Nina Simone. You can listen to the sample of this song in the album FOLKSY NINA/NINA WITH STRINGS in amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/Folksy-Nina-Strings-Simone/dp/B000009QJK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-0230524-1967003?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1177847474&sr=8-1

I found this song in album FORBIDDEN FRUIT (REISSUE) which is sold in Bangkok and includes 21 tracks. I don’t know if the album FORBIDDEN FRUIT in other countries carries this track or not.

I got interested in listening to Nina Simone after reading about her in Memories of the Future’s blog. I have to thank him a lot for arousing my interest in her.
http://memoriesofthefuture.wordpress.com/

Listening to SPRING IS HERE makes me want to make a list of my favorite songs for four seasons. Here they are:

1.SPRING
– 1.1 SPRING IS HERE by Nina Simone
--1.2 SPRING by Saint Etienne
This song is in the album FOXBASE ALPHA
http://www.amazon.com/Foxbase-Alpha-Saint-Etienne/dp/B000002LS0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/103-0230524-1967003?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1177849352&sr=1-3

2.SUMMER – SUMMER BREEZE by Nicki Richards
You can listen to the sample of SUMMER BREEZE in Nicki Richards’ blog:
http://www.myspace.com/nickirichards

3.AUTUMN – AUTUMN LEAVES (1993) by Coldcut. The song is remixed by Nellee Hooper
http://www.discogs.com/release/97064
http://www.discogs.com/image/R-97064-1100880357.jpg

4.WINTER – WINTER by TORI AMOS
You can watch the music video of WINTER here:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1d6jp_tori-amos-winter

So you can listen to these songs after watching ERIC ROHMER’S TALES OF FOUR SEASONS, or after listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Actually, one of my most favorite soundtrack songs of all time is SUMMER KISSES, WINTER TEARS sung by Julee Cruise in UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD (Wim Wenders, A+) soundtrack.

THE THREE INVENTORS (1980, MICHEL OCELOT, A+)

http://thaifilm.com/articleDetail.asp?id=11

http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=71.90

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006LPEG/imdb-adbox/
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51DANWDTF3L._SS500_.jpg

THE OLD GARDEN (2006, IM SANG-SOO, A+)

http://www.thaifilm.com/newsDetail.asp?id=128

A GOOD LAWYER’S WIFE (2003, A)

A GOOD LAWYER’S WIFE

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1p2x6_ben-westbeech-so-good-today

LOTTE REINIGER
http://calarts.edu/images/redcat/fv/reiniger/600a.jpg
http://www.zonalibre.org/blog/grimorio/ima/lotte.jpg
http://www.freunde-stadtmuseum.de/dolittle.jpg

GEERT MUL

One of my most favorite clips of all time is TIME CROSS by Geert Mul from Holland. I found the clip on this website

http://www.commandn.net/atv2/3.html

I could watch the clip on that website last year, but when I try to watch it again today, I cannot. It seems that the clip cannot be played any more on that website.

So I try to search for some information about Geert Mul, and found a website http://www.geertmul.nl

I assume that the website talks about the same "Geert Mul" who directed TIME CROSS.

I browsed through that website, and think that GEERT MUL is very interesting. He seems to be a multi-talented artist. TIME CROSS shows how great he is as a video director. The website shows how great he is in many other ways.

A lot of film directors today are also great multimedia artists. While some film directors in the past were also great painters, I notice that many interesting directors today are also great sound engineers, or sound effects technicians, or something like that. They used to create ambient music in the past, and now they create entrancing "ambient movies".

I'm a little bit busy right now. I hope I can write more in the future.

http://www.gabo-photos.com/fotos/Moritz-Bleibtreu.jpg

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

BANGKOK POST EDITORIAL: LAUGHABLE CENSORS FROM ANOTHER AGE

THE ARTICLE BELOW IS FROM THE NEWSPAPER "BANGKOK POST"

http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/27Apr2007_news19.php

EDITORIAL

Laughable censors from another age

Cutting, banning, blurring, putting vaseline on strategic body parts _ these practices by a few men with power to make judgments for the rest of the country and to promote empty morality and decency must end, especially in a time when the new constitution is being hyped as a newfound paragon of freedom and democratic advancement.

Film censorship is a primitive manifestation of authoritarian exercise which not only does a great disservice to the improvement of our cultural environment, but also makes Thailand a laughing stock in the eyes of foreign communities, which have long adopted the more rational, though still not perfect, system of film rating. The gist of the embarrassment lies in the fact that the Thai legislation used to govern film censorship in 2007 remains the one written in 1930, two years before this country underwent its historic shift to a constitutional monarchy and before the concept of democracy was formally inducted in this land. Article 4 of the Film Act 1930 stipulates that no screenings should be permitted for films that ''may be detrimental to the state of peace, order and moral decency''. Such open wording has left an enormous gap for negative interpretations for 77 years, and the successive government agencies in charge of supervising film screenings have always cited this article in deciding what the audience can or cannot see. But it is getting increasingly difficult for the Censorship Board _ chaired by the police and including rotating representatives of cultural and academic bodies _ to justify their seemingly arbitrary decisions. The recent uproar over the acclaimed arthouse film Saeng Satawat (or Syndromes and a Century) exposes the inefficiency, if not complete bankruptcy, of the existing censorship regime. The censors are not happy with four scenes in the film _ a monk strumming a guitar; two monks playing with a radio-controlled flying object; a group of doctors drinking whisky; and a doctor kissing his girlfriend and a subsequent shot of his trousers in the area of his crotch.

For those who have seen Saeng Satawat, these images carry no defamatory ill-will to doctors and monks and are much less detrimental to ''decency'' than the vulgar images and crude expletives dispensed gleefully in other Thai films that passed the censors, not to mention a shot of a woman dyeing her pubic hair in the Dutch movie Black Book, or the bloody decapitation in 300. By making this comparison, we are not saying that the dyeing of pubic hair or the gruesome beheading should have been scissored out. But it is imperative that the government open its eyes and get in touch with reality as reflected by an art form such as film, and to modernise the system that ensures both fairness and the right of artists to express their vision.

The censorship board has lost the moral authority from its many demonstrations of bias and mediocrity that it can no longer rely on the magic mantra that what it is doing is protecting the young from bad influences and safeguarding the glory of Thai culture. Such claims sound more and more ludicrous since what we see on television every day is much more shocking than any scene in Saeng Satawat, and since a number of Thai films thriving on rudeness can open without objection on 300 screens.

In an ideal world, nothing should be cut or banned and people should be encouraged to make their own judgment on the representations of virtue and vice as projected by any medium. In a less ideal world, a mode of semi-voluntary censorship like the film rating system should be applied. Film rating, which classifies audience access to screenings according to their age, allows a greater degree of artistic freedom and at the same time is a mechanism for preventing children from being exposed to sensitive material. True, we can imagine a long list of headaches that will arrive with the rating system _ the multiplex operators are likely to oppose it, for a start _ but it has proved workable in many countries; it is a system more in tune with the democratic spirit this country has long been paying lip service to. The current, unreasonable censorship practice must be abolished at once.

A THAI FAIRY TALE: MADAME TWELVE HUSBANDS

http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=71.60

1.BRIGITTE BARDOT

2.ANDREA DWORKIN (1946-2005)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Dworkin

http://www.anniesprinkle.org/html/writings/101_uses.html

1. Sex as a sedative. It helps you go to sleep.
2. Sex to fight addictions. It helped me quit smoking
3. Sex as a laxative. Regular sex helps you have regular shits.
4. Sex to get to know somebody. You can tell a lot about a person by fucking them.
5. Sex as a meditation.
6. Sex to relive boredom.
7. Sex to improve concentration.
8. Sex to make money.
9. Sex to create magic. Some witches believe that the most powerful time to cast a spell is during orgasm.
10. Sex for manipulation. It can get you what you want.
11. Sex as a reward. Either to yourself or to someone else.
12. Sex for relaxation.
13. Sex for rejuvenation. It keeps you looking and feeling younger.
14. Sex to increase energy. A great pick-me-up.
15. Sex to cure an asthma attack. I saved a man's life once.
16. Sex to make you laugh. It can be hilarious.
17. Sex as a gift. A present for birthdays, anniversaries, Bar Mitzvahs...
18. Sex to get high.
19. Sex to achieve an altered state.
20. Sex to create life.
21. Sex for waking up. Helps get rid of that groggy feeling.
22. Sex to cure back pain.
23. Sex to keep warm in the winter.
24. Sex as a pain killer. It's far more potent than aspirin, and most prescription pain killers.
25. Sex as an anti-depressant. It will cheer you up.
26. Sex for stress reduction.
27. Sex as a spiritual exercise.
28. Sex for exercise. It's aerobic and burns calories.
29. Sex for thrills and adventure.
30. Sex to relive headaches. Even migraines.
31. Sex as a cure for writer's block.
32. Sex as a good deed. Give the needy an occasional mercy fuck.
33. Sex as an art form. It can be very creative and a great way to express oneself.
34. Sex to control appetite. It can be so filling.
35. Sex for cardiovascular health.
36. Sex to create intimacy.
37. Sex as an expression of love.
38. Sex for itching mosquito bites. Apply your own sperm to affected areas.
39. Sex for barter. Trade it for all kinds of things.
40. Sex to get in touch with emotions, like sadness.
41. Sex to avoid working. I can always finish this some other time.

http://susiebright.blogs.com/susie_brights_journal_/2005/04/andrea_dworkin_.html

>>I know it’s strange that I have such a tragic affection for her, when she apparently only had loathing for my kind. I’ve had women come at me with knives who felt they had to do me in, in Dworkin’s name. Her passion and activism was classic Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She was a dangerous lady, with no class analysis, no psychological insight-- a scary combination. Her loaded warped pistol was neatly picked up by right wing creeps who took all the femme bullets out of it and never looked back..

Every time you hear some preacher/politician talk about “violence against women” or how something is “degrading to women” tell them to send a royalty check to Andrea and ask them what they’ve done lately to empower female sexual authority. I never understood why she didn’t attack them the way she attacked feminist pornographers.<<

http://www.broadcastthai.com/plaboo/plaboo-story.php

http://www.lokwannakadi.com/neo/shlumnum.php?ID=7

I WILL WALK LIKE A CRAZY WHORE

EIGHT THINGS I HATE ABOUT THAI CENSORS

http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=212.0

FILMS WHICH WERE BANNED BY THAI CENSORSHIP BOARD MAY INCLUDE:-

1.MY TEACHER EATS BISCUIT (1996, ING K)

2.LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! (1997, JOE MANTELLO, A)
http://xq28.net/wow/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=192

I just learned about the censorship of this film from “SARAKADEE” magazine. It was banned because it concerns homosexuality. But fortunately, and absurdly, the censorship board does not control the Thai television broadcast, so this film was shown in Thai cable TV. This is an interesting thing in Thailand: some films are banned from showing in theatres, but are allowed to be shown to Thai TV audience in every age group.

3.TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999, GIL JUNGER)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147800/
The rumour said that this film was banned in theatres because the Thai censors don’t like some relationships between students and teachers in this film, but this film was allowed to be shown on Thai television. Hahaha.

4.RUN LOLA RUN (TOM TYKWER, A+)
I think it was banned because the leading male protagonist deals drugs.

5.BLOW (2001, TED DEMME)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0221027/
The same reason as the above.

6.MOONLIGHT (2002, PAULA VAN DER OEST)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245294/
The Thai censorship board doesn’t like some behaviors of children in this film.

7.FRAILTY (2001, BILL PAXTON, A-)

I’m not sure about the banning of this film, but this film was promoted that it would be shown in Thailand, and then it disappeared without a trace.

I’m still waiting to see LITTLE CHILDREN (2006, TODD FIELD), and I hope that the behaviors of the characters in this film don’t resemble the behaviors of the Thai censors’ parents, because it seems that whenever the behaviors in any films resemble the behaviors of the Thai censors’ mums or dads, those films will be banned in Thailand.

FILMMAKERS RISE AGAINST CENSORSHIP

FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION / CALL FOR END TO OUTDATED LAWS

Filmmakers rise against censorship

KONG RITHDEE

A group of artists, filmmakers and NGOs yesterday launched a movement for the abolition of outdated censorship laws and the introduction of a rating system.

The Free Thai Cinema Movement was initiated by the Thai Film Foundation, Thai Film Directors Association, Bioscope magazine, Thaiindie and Thai Short Film groups. It follows the controversial demand by the Censorship Board that four scenes be cut from Apichatpong Weerasethakul's acclaimed movie Saeng Satawat (Syndromes and a Century).

"This is not just about my movie," said Mr Apichatpong, who withdrew his film from commercial release and refused to cut the four scenes. "This is about calling for a new system that will protect the rights of the filmmakers as well as of the audience."

"The law governing movie censorship is the Film Act of 1930, which was promulgated even before this country became a democracy," said Chalida Uabumrungjit of the Thai Film Foundation. "What we're trying to do is not only defend some movies, but to exercise our democratic rights, and it is good timing because a new constitution is being drafted now."

Prachya Pinkaew, president of the Thai Directors Association and director of Ong-bak and Tom-Yum-Goong, said the charter drafters should define films as a form of mass media, which in effect would prevent any form of government intervention.

"Newspapers, television and radio are already free, but the cinema is still left out," he said. "The drafters of the new charter must take this issue into account."

On April 10 the Censorship Board demanded that Mr Apichatpong make four cuts to Saeng Satawat _ scenes showing a monk playing a guitar, doctors drinking whisky, a doctor kissing his girlfriend, and two monks playing with a radio-controlled aeroplane.

When the director refused to cut the film and confirmed he would not release the movie in Thailand, the censors refused to return the print of the film and insisted that, by law, it would have to make the cuts to the film itself.

This has sparked a widespread reaction from movie-goers and organisations seeing this as a form of oppression of free speech.

No representatives of the censors appeared at yesterday's press conference to launch the Free Thai Cinema Movement.

"It's time for the state to recognise the right of artists to create their works," said Jiranan Pitpreecha, poet and Sea-Write winner. "A rating system for movies is the way to show that Thailand is ready to become a developed country."

THE BODYBUILDER SNATCHER

This is my comment in Elusive Lucidity’s blog:

http://elusivelucidity.blogspot.com/2007/04/broken-by-middle-class-dream.html#comments

I saw THE SEVENTH VICTIM (1943) a few years ago. I think it might be the best film of Mark Robson, though there are some personal reasons why I like those three films a little bit more than THE SEVENTH VICTIM on my first viewing. One reason is because my English listening comprehension isn’t very good, and I saw these Mark Robson’s films without any English subtitles. I have to admit I couldn’t quite follow the story of THE SEVENTH VICTIM. I could understand only 50 % of what the characters were talking. Another important reason may be because I tend to feel involved with a film in which the villains are people of the established religions or the authority. That’s why I feel involved with those three films more than THE SEVENTH VICTIM. Anyway, I think THE SEVENTH VICTIM is more atmospheric than those three films, while those three films are more “mainstream” than THE SEVENTH VICTIM. The scene that I like the most in THE SEVENTH VICTIM is one early scene in which the private detective is about to open a door, or something like that. That scene is very exciting.

I haven’t watched I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE and THE LEOPARD MAN, but I have seen CAT PEOPLE (1942, Jacques Tourneur, A), THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (1944, Gunther von Fritsch + Robert Wise, A-/B+), and ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON’S THE BODY SNATCHER (1945, Robert Wise, A-/B/+). All of which are produced by Val Lewton. I think CAT PEOPLE is very classic. Sonthaya Subyen, my friend, showed these films to me and other people. I guess one reason why he promoted these films is because these films show that horror and fear can be successfully achieved without loud music, gore, or “what you can see directly”. These films are quite the opposite of most current horror films. These films play with the imagination of the audience. However, I think I am too accustomed to current horror films, so I couldn’t help falling asleep a little bit while I was watching THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE and THE BODY SNATCHER. They might be too artful for me, I guess. Hahaha.

Speaking of those Val Lewton’s films always makes me think about the novel “FLICKER” by Theodore Roszak. I can’t remember exactly if the novel mentions Val Lewton directly or not. But the novel talked about some old horror films, and I guess the novel might be inspired by some Lewton’s films.

Ah, you watch Dolph Lundgren and Van Damme’s vehicles. Of all the Lundgren’s films that I saw, I like THE PUNISHER (1989, Mark Goldblatt) the most. One reason is because the film has very stylish villainesses. And hey, Boaz Yakin (the director of FRESH, UPTOWN GIRLS, A PRICE ABOVE RUBIES, REMEMBER THE TITANS) wrote the script. I don’t know which Van Damme film is to be recommended. But the last time that I saw him is in a French comedy film called NARCO (2004, Tristan Aurouet + Gilles Lellouche, B+), in which he did a brief appearance. I regret that Lundgren and Van Damme’s future might not be very bright. And I think it would be difficult for them to play in a dramatic role as the role of Stallone in ROCKY BALBOA.

CHARLOTTE + BALTHAZAR + SEABISCUIT = LUMP OF SUGAR

PETER NELLHAUS WROTE ABOUT THE DVD “FILMS OF KENNETH ANGER, VOLUME 1” in this link:
http://www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com/archives/2007/04/films_of_kennet.html#more

This is my comment in his blog:

I just watched this DVD a week ago. It is my first time to see Kenneth Anger's films, and I immediately fell in love with his works. I like INAUGURATION OF THE PLEASURE DOME the most. It is very crazy. I also like EAUX D'ARTIFICE very much, but I thought the film seemed like something familiar to me. It was as if I had seen it when I was a child, but I thought that would be impossible. How could EAUX D'ARTIFICE be shown on Thai television 20-25 years ago? But now I found the answer after reading your blog. I saw VOYAGE TO ITALY a few years ago. Though I can't recall that scene in VOYAGE TO ITALY, I think Rossellini's film is the reason why I felt EAUX D'ARTIFICE seemed like something I had seen before.

เมื่อไม่นานมานี้ได้ไปดู LUMP OF SUGAR (2006, LEE HWANG-KYEONG, B+) เนื้อหาของหนังตอนช่วงแรกๆทำให้นึกถึง CHARLOTTE’S WEB (2006, GARY WINICK, A) ที่เด็กผู้หญิงพยายามขอชีวิตลูกม้า แต่เนื้อหาตอนกลางๆเรื่องทำให้นึกถึง AU HASARD BALTHAZAR (ROBERT BRESSON, A+) เพราะหนังเล่าถึงชีวิตที่ลำบากของนางเอกกับชีวิตลำเค็ญของลูกม้าแบบตัดสลับกันไปมา

After I wrote a comment on INDIA SONG in imdb.com, a few years ago a lady wrote an e-mail to me to say that she also liked INDIA SONG very much, and she also strongly recommended me to watch CET AMOUR-LA, but I still haven’t watched it yet,

After reading your comment on CET AMOUR-LA, I know that this film is a must-see. I can find its DVD in Bangkok. So I will try to find it and watch it.

I have seen only three films directed by Duras: INDIA SONG, NATHALIE GRANGER, and AGATHA AND THE UNLIMITED READINGS (1981, A+). These films were shown at Alliance Francaise in Bangkok. I saw AGATHA AND THE UNLIMITED READINGS without English subtitles. It is in French, and I don’t understand French, but the images in the film are very powerful. The film didn’t bore me at all though sometimes I had to stare at a shot of an empty window or a deserted beach for five minutes. I don’t know how Duras could achieve this -- making shots of “what seems like nothingness” very powerful.

Some comments about Bulle Ogier in AGATHA AND THE UNLIMITED READINGS can be read in this link:

I just watched INDIA SONG for the seventh time in January this year. And I still can’t get enough of it. My two cinephile friends just watched this film for the first time this January, and they were also overwhelmed by this film. One of my friends wishes that INDIA SONG was five-hour long. He doesn’t want this film to end. He also gave me a CD containing the song “India Song” in two versions. The first version is the piano version, and the second version is sung by Jeanne Moreau. I don’t know how he acquired these two versions via the internet, but I enjoyed listening to them very much.

"THAILAND/CENSORSHIP" BY PLALAI FAIFA

THE ARTICLE BELOW IS FROM BANGKOK POST NEWSPAPER

http://www.bangkokpost.com/Realtime/20Apr2007_real24.php

THAILAND / CENSORSHIP

Cut to the quick

PLALAI FAIFA

Now that online DVD vendors and the ubiquitous film festivals make it possible to see movies from just about everywhere, committed cinema addicts may feel that they are getting to the point where they have seen it all. Yes, this new director may be from Paraguay or Uzbekistan or some other country whose movies have previously been largely out of sight, but 15 minutes into his latest it's easy to see that he's been watching Tarkovsky or Bunuel or Kiarostami or Miike very closely and is wearing the borrowed technique like a badge.

So despite the huge variety of movies that are now within reach to anyone interested, film makers who are true originals are turning out to be rare. How fortunate for Thailand, then, that we have one of them right here in the person of Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

As critics worldwide have noted in fascinated reviews, his movies resemble no others. Instead of playing the critic's game of silly comparisons - "like WG Sebald filmed by Aleksandr Sakurov" - they have been content to admit that they were simultaneously baffled and moved. Apichatpong's Tropical Malady appeared on a number of Year's Best lists, and his new film, Syndromes and a Century, judging from what has been written about it so far in the international press, will follow suit.

In my own case, after watching each of Apichatpong's main films, beginning with Mysterious Object at Noon, I have had the urge to immediately watch it again. The most recent two, Tropical Malady and Syndromes and a Century, feel to me like personal meditations whose full meaning will always be known only to the director himself, the same sense I get when watching Tarkovsky's Mirror. But as with that elusive masterpiece they cast an emotional spell that has nothing to do with what this or that detail or gesture "means".

The four movies by Apichatpong that I have seen so far are works of art that will do far more to enhance foreign perception of Thailand's culture than any overstuffed, over-ornamented, elephant-infested spectacle of imagined Thai history. But what is the official reaction to this achievement that so greatly enhances Thailand's fetishised "image"? Cut! Expurgate! Mutilate!

When are we finally going to get past this anachronistic and counterproductive reaction of banning or censoring or otherwise trying to put things out of reach? The sex scene excised from the locally-made DVD of Blissfully Yours might have offended prissier sensibilities - who of course had the option of not watching the film - but in the case of Syndromes and a Century the demanded cuts are harmless by any reasonable standard. It isn't surprising that foreign commentators are already scratching their heads about official attempts to injure the film. "Its coherence is evident; it is too lovely and lucid to be frustrating or dull," wrote AO Scott in Wednesday's New York Times. "But it takes place just on the other side of conscious apprehension. (This makes the recent demand for cuts by Thai censors seem especially odd, since, at least to an outsider, there seems to be nothing politically or sexually provocative in the film.)."

The contested scenes, all playful and humorous, are surpassed in offensiveness by stories that appear in our newspapers practically every day. But when it comes to movies, our distributors and censors have always been handy with the scissors, although there have been exceptions when there is money to be made. When Schindler's List was released 14 years ago the censors were ready with their scissors to remove scenes of Embeth Davidtz's bare breasts until director Steven Spielberg intervened: "Show all of the film or show none of it." The movie was making massive amounts of money wherever it was shown, so somehow it was decided that it could be shown in its entirety without placing the public morality in any undue peril.

Apichatpong took the same stance as Spielberg, all or nothing, but his subtle movies are not big moneymakers here. It is unlikely that the censors' decision will be reversed unless its inappropriateness becomes evident to them, and that is a longshot, indeed. In the meantime, as locally-made features of the greatest stupidity and vulgarity open regularly in our cinemas without interference from the censors, Thai moviegoers will have to wait for a foreign-made DVD to see this lovely work by their country's best-ever filmmaker.

DURAS' DREAMS

MY COMMENT IN ELUSIVE LUCIDITY’S BLOG

http://elusivelucidity.blogspot.com/2007/04/broken-by-middle-class-dream.html

I really have little knowledge about classical cinema, but I’ve seen three old movies by Mark Robson, and I like that the good characters in the films are rebellious and the bad ones are the authority. These three films are THE GHOST SHIP (1943), ISLE OF THE DEAD (1945), and BEDLAM (1946). The bad ones in these films are really evil, though. There are no shades of gray in them. But I think these films are very encouraging for the audience who don’t like to obey.

MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE LEFT A COMMENT IN MY BLOG HERE:
http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2007/03/28/retrospective-wish-list/

Reading Memories of the Future’s comment makes me feel very glad to find another person who likes Robbe-Grillet and Duras.

I have browsed through a book called DURAS BY DURAS, which is a gift from Sonthaya Subyen, and find something very interesting. Marguerite Duras talked about her dream after INDIA SONG was shown for the first time.

>>Duras: Did I tell you what I dreamt? Once the film was mixed, that is, finished, audible, visible, I left on my vacation. Without showing it to anyone, I stayed away for two weeks. And when I came back, they screened the film a week later. The next day, for two successive nights, I had these dreams: the first night the place where I was living in Trouville, my little place, was burglarized. It didn’t have windows any more, you couldn’t see the sea, you had to climb up on a stool to see the sea; they even stole the property—it was much smaller—and all the furniture, the view. The next day, the second night, I dreamt that my identification papers, my money and my purse was stolen. I was on a train that was rushing along, no one cared about the theft. I was crying and people were saying to me, “See how she is, never happy.”

Xaviere Gautier (the interviewer): That was just after showing it for the first time?

Duras: Yes, I had been dispossessed, not only of a given area, a place, my habitat, if you will, but even of my identity.<<

COMING SOON: MISS POTTER RISING

I found these two brochures in the LIDO theatre in Bangkok. Someone who works for the theatre put two brochures together. I find them very funny. And I think it would be great if Renee Zellweger does not want to be typecast anymore.

INJUSTICE

This is celinejulie’s answer to him:

Thank you very much for your comment, Brian.

I don’t have much to say about the censorship and SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY now. I have to admit that I feel exhausted in this fight. It kind of drains my soul. The more I think about what happens in Thailand right now, the more I feel bad. Now I really understand what INJUSTICE feels like. But seeing the names in the petition grow longer and longer encourages me to think that there’s still hope in this world.

--A.O. SCOTT in the New York Times also mentioned about SYNDROMES and the censorship:

(This makes the recent demand for cuts by Thai censors seem especially odd, since, at least to an outsider, there seems to be nothing politically or sexually provocative in the film. In any case, Mr. Weerasethakul has refused to make the changes and has issued a statement condemning the censorship.)

Plea for an end to state censorship of cinema

Monday, April 16, 2007

Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com

The censorship of controversial scenes in Apichatpong Weerasethakul's award-winning film "Sang Sattawat" (Syndromes and a Century) has led to a call to liberate Thai films from state intervention.

The Thai Film Foundation and Thai Film Directors' Association yesterday launched an online petition demanding that the National Legislative Assembly state in the new constitution that movies are a form of mass media.

"We are petitioning not only for a just decision for 'Sang Sattawat' but also for a long-needed modernisation of legislation concerning movie censorship," the petition read.

"We demand that the authority revise legislation to stop the practice of cutting and banning films, and instead implement a rating system of the kind used in free countries. This is the only way that Thai cinema and all cinema shown in Thailand can be freed from the shackles of outdated legal vandalism."

The move came after the Censorship Board had informed Apichatpong that it would permit the release of his film on condition that four cuts were made.

The scenes involve the portrayal of monks and doctors in inappropriate ways, according to censors. Two feature a monk playing a guitar and a monk playing a game. The Culture Ministry objected to the scenes.

"We didn't ban the film, but if they want to release it, they have to cut these scenes," said Asst Professor Chawana Phawakanan, who represents the Federation of National Film Association of Thailand on the board.

But Apichatpong decided to cancel commercial release of the film in Thailand and insisted the cuts would not be made.

The director, who is now in the United States, said in a statement circulating via e-mail: "I, a filmmaker, treat my works as my own sons or my daughters. When I conceived them, they have their own lives to live.

"I don't mind if people are fond of them or despise them, as long as I created them with my best intentions and efforts. If these offspring of mine cannot live in their own country for whatever reasons, let them be free.

"Since there are other places that warmly welcome them as who they are, there is no reason to mutilate them from the fear of the system, or from greed. Otherwise there is no reason for one to continue making art."

Apichatpong's style has a loose plot and portrays people in everyday life. The award-winning director wanted to devote the film to his parents, who are both doctors.

The film featured at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival last year. Recently it won the Best Asian Film award at France's Deauville Asian Film Festival.

"The board members judge the film with their priority to protect themselves - what happens after that, they are not interested in," said film producer Pantham Thongsung.

Meanwhile, a lawyer representative of the Medical Council of Thailand wants to ban two other scenes in the film. One features a doctor kissing his girlfriend in a hospital with a close-up scene that suggests sexual feeling. The other shows glasses filled with whisky on a table in a doctors' common room.

"The best solution is to put a notice at the beginning of the film to warn that the film has improper scenes that do not exist in real life. Then the problematic scenes would not be cut at all," said Chawana.

However, Chawana said the director dismissed that idea following the censorship of the monk scenes last week.

The censors are under the supervision of the Royal Thai Police. The board comprises representatives from different government sectors, depending on a film's content. Each related office sends staff to consider a film under the Film Act, which has been used since 1930.

The rotation of board members has been criticised for preventing a uniform standard for censorship.

A new Film Act that would update the rating system has been stuck in the system for decades because of political changes.

Among people signing the online petition are Julie Pearce of the British Film Institute, Thomas Bertacche Udine of the Far East Film Festival in Italy and Chinese film-maker Zhang Xian Min.

SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY: FEAR OF REALITY

Thank you very much Zach Campbell, for helping people to sign the petition to help Apichatpong.
http://elusivelucidity.blogspot.com/2007/04/help-joe-out.html

Brian Darr wrote a very good comment about the case of Syndromes and a Century here:

http://www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com/archives/2007/04/syndromes_and_a.html

I believe that the case of SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY is partly caused by the double-standards applied to Thai people in some careers. Actually, I think that the problems of Thai censorship in general is caused by their lack of standards.

What Brian Darr said in Peter Nellhaus' blog makes me think about what FILMSICK said in Thai in his blog. It makes me think that some people tried to destroy SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY because it is so close to reality that they can't bear. If the film were a low comedy, it wouldn't have aroused their "fear of reality" as much as this.

I wouldn’t want to visit Wolfe Creek after seeing this film, because the film is too real for me. It is different from the TV series “TWIN PEAKS”. Though TWIN PEAKS is also about brutal murders, I still would like to visit the place where the series is shot, because the murders in TWIN PEAKS look very fictional.

THE PARTY AND THE GUESTS

THE OLD GARDEN (2006, IM SANG-SOO, A++++++)

1.THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN (1979, RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER, A+/A)

2.THE HUNGER YEARS: IN A LAND OF PLENTY (1980, JUTTA BRUECKNER, A+)

3.THE NASTY GIRL (1990, MICHAEL VERHOEVEN, A+)

CASE OF A ROOKIE HANGMAN (1970, PAVEL JURACEK, A+++++)

1.VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (1970, JAROMIL JIRES)
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0002CH7BQ.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS500_.jpg

Closely inspired in the nightmarish novel of czech poet and writer Vitezlav Nezval, which in its turn is inspired in Gothic imaginary and fairy tales, this surreal symbolic vampire fable directed with fine irony by Jaromil Jires ( " The joke ", adaptation to the big screen of Kundera's novel ) narrates the bizarre adventures of a innocent bourgeois teenage girl during the week she begins to puberty, surrounded in a succesion of sexual fantasies ruled by a vampire named Tchor from whom obscure influence gets to flee with the help of her magic earrings in an oniric journey in which Lewis Carroll and the Marquis de Sade could perfectly be her travelling partners.

2.THE CREMATOR (1968, JURAJ HERZ)
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000EHSCJU.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS500_.jpg

Juraj Herz’s filmThe Cremator has been described in many ways - as surrealist-inspired horror, as expressionist fantasy and as a dark and disturbing tale of terror. Combining horror with humour, this brilliant black comedy, set in Prague during the Nazi occupation, tells the story of Karl Kopfrkingl an increasingly deranged cremator for whom the period offers great possibilities for acting out his psychotic impulses as contribution towards ‘the salvation of the world’.

3.THE FIFTH HORSEMAN IS FEAR (1968, ZBYNEK BRYNYCH, A+)

ชอบเพลง SKYSCAPE REMIX กับ CHINA FUZZ ของเขาในระดับ A+++++++++++

1.THE ARMY OF SHADOWS (1969, JEAN-PIERRE MELVILLE, A+)
