Favorite films about southern Thailand
A friend asked me about films about southern Thailand. So I made
this list, but the list excludes some well-known films that my friend knows
already, such as THE ISLAND FUNERAL (2015, Pimpaka Towira), CITIZEN JULING, and
films by Panu Aree.
Some films in this list are not “political”, but I like them
very much, because they represent the interesting lifestyles and culture of
peoeple in the south.
(in alphabetical order)
1.ASALAMUALAYKUM (2015, Weenita Julaphiwat, 28min)
2.BEHIND THE CURTAIN: THE DAILY LIFE OF WOMEN IN THAILAND’S
SOUTHERN BORDER PROVINCES (2013, Rahanee Daoh, documentary, 30min)
3.CYCLE UNIVERSE (วัฏจักรวาล) (2016, Pinmanee
Emtanom, 29min)
4.FOG IN THE CITY (หมอกในเมือง) (2015,
Wachara Kanha, documentary, 30min)
5.HELLO AGAIN (2016, Noorahaya Lahtee, 23min)
6.95110 POSTAL DREAM (2011, Taweewit Kijtanasoonthorn,
documentary, 83min)
7.ONE DAY, ONE SONG (2012, Nitiwat Chonwanichsiri, 9min)
8.PATTANIRAMA (2016, Suporn Shoosongdej, documentary, 37min)
9.PEACE IS ONLY A PICTURE (2015, Gooyee I-tae, 9min)
10.PONDOK (ปอเนาะ) (2006, Haris Maschai,
documentary, 12min)
But I haven’t seen many films about the southernmost part of
Thailand, such as MY COMMUNITY (2005, Pisut Srimhok, 59min, documentary). So I’m
sure there are many great films about this topic which are not in this list.
