AN E-MAIL FROM ALEXIS

 

ไม่รู้ว่าสิ่งที่จะเขียนต่อไปนี้เป็นสิ่งที่ “เหมาะสม” หรือเปล่านะ 5555 ถ้าหากไม่เหมาะสมเดี๋ยวเราค่อยลบ

 

คือพอเราได้มาดูหนังในงาน BANGKOK EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL ในปี 2025 เราก็นึกย้อนกลับไปถึงงาน BEFF ในปี 1999 แล้วก็นึกถึงความประทับใจของเรากับเพื่อน ๆ บางคนที่มีต่อ “ความน่ารัก” ของผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์บางคนที่เดินทางมาร่วมงาน BEFF ที่กรุงเทพในปี 1999 ซึ่งผู้กำกับคนหนึ่งที่เรากับเพื่อนแอบกรี๊ดกร๊าดกันอย่างลับ ๆ ในปีนั้นก็คือ Eric Patrick ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์เรื่อง STARK FILM (1997, animation, 6min) ที่ฉายใน BEFF ปี 1999

 

เรายังจำได้ว่า เรากับเพื่อน ๆ แอบประทับใจความน่ารักของ Eric Patrick ในงานนั้นอย่างรุนแรง แต่หลังจากงาน BEFF ในปี 1999 เราก็ไม่ได้ยินชื่อของเขาอีกเลย

 

เพราะฉะนั้นพอเราได้มาดู BEFF ปี 2025 เราก็เลยนึกถึงสิ่งที่เคยเกิดขึ้นเมื่อ 26 ปีก่อน แล้วเราก็เข้า google search หาในทันทีว่า ตอนนี้เขาเป็นอย่างไรแล้วบ้าง แล้วเราก็พบว่า ตอนนี้เขาน่าจะเป็นอาจารย์สอนอยู่มหาลัยแห่งหนึ่งในสหรัฐ

 

สรุปว่า การมาดูงาน BEFF ในแต่ละครั้ง ให้อะไรมากกว่าที่คุณคิดนะคะ MORE THAN CINEMA จริง ๆ ค่ะ จบ 555555

พอเราได้ดูผลงานใหม่ของ John Torres ในงาน Bangkok Experimental Film Festival 2025 เราก็เลยคิดถึง Alexis Tioseco ผู้ล่วงลับ เพราะ Alexis เคยเขียนอีเมลมาคุยกับเราเรื่อง John Torres ในปี 2006

 

อันนี้เป็นอีเมลที่ Alexis เขียนถึงเราในวันที่ 10 เม.ย. 2006 ในอีเมลนี้มีการพาดพิงถึงหนังของ John Torres, หนังเรื่อง RED SAGA (2004, Kiri Dalena) และหนังเรื่อง “โหน่ง เท่ง นักเลงภูเขาทอง” (2006, Panich Sodsri) ด้วย ซึ่งเป็นหนังที่พาดพิงถึงหนังเรื่อง “นางสาวสุวรรณ” (แต่จริงๆ แล้วหนังไทยเรื่องแรกในประวัติศาสตร์คือ “โชคสองชั้น” (1927, ขุนอนุรักษ์รัถการ) นะ )

 

คิดว่าดวงวิญญาณของ Alexis คงไม่ว่าอะไรที่เราเอาเนื้อหาบางส่วนในอีเมลนี้มาเผยแพร่ และเราคิดว่าดวงวิญญาณของเขาคงดีใจมาก ๆ ที่ได้เห็นว่าภาพยนตร์+การแสดงของ John Torres ในงาน BEFF 2025 ประสบความสำเร็จมาก ๆ

Hi Jit,

Thanks for your e-mail. It's nice to hear from you.

It is good to hear that the political problems in Thailand have been resolved, and things are cooling off. I'm most certain that a lot of political short films will be made in the next few months...

Bioscope produced 11-short films about peace? I like the idea of that. Who were the filmmakers that were commissioned to do the works?

Out of curiosity-- who funds Bioscope, and projects such as these? What is the budget like for  commissioned short films like these? Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the shorts when they are screened.

Generally, my students liked Red Saga, which I was very glad to see. They had to analyze the film, and there were some very interesting interpretations. Most thought it was very impressive technically, and that it provided insight into the situation of the farmers in the countryside, though they all had their own impression of what things meant. I think it is very difficult not to be affected by Red Saga, whether you find it a bit heavy-handed in delivering its message or not.

The suggestion of your friend regarding lost films is the same ont aht has been posed to me by a few friends. To remake the film with only the legend of what the story is about, and leave it to the filmmaker to fill in the rest. I think it is a very interesting idea, though I think it would be awfully difficult to get funding for such a project.

That's very nice to hear about Nong & Teng, and the nostalghia for the first film ever made in Thailand. I imagine it must be a nice and charming scene in the movie.

Some updates on my end--
I've just finished my first semester teaching. I submitted my final grades the other day, and it felt like a small accomplishmetn. Was really glad to have finally finished grading all these papers. I enjoy teachings but grading is not fun at all.

Do you remember the short films of John Torres in S-Express, "Tawidgutom" and "Salat"? John has just finished his first-feature film, "Todo Todo Teros", which is screening In Competition in the Singapore Film Festival. It is similar in style to his short films, mixing found footage or home video with organized footage. I think its a bit difficult to understand in some parts, but do also think that it has some very powerful and interesting moments.
