I LOVE MY TEDDY BEARS

The political situation in Thailand is very bad. Earlier this week, I felt very afraid that a civil war was going to happen. Then, I just realized that I shouldn’t be afraid of a civil war or death, because I have been ready to die for the past 20 years. So I feel happy playing with my teddy bears now, while watching Thailand burning in hell. If you just don’t feel attached to your life, you can stop worrying about many things. :-)

This photo is a work of Montri Toemsombat. It’s called THAI DREAM (2008). It is a part of the exhibition NANOTHAILAND (A+), which was held at 100 Tonson Gallery.

POLL 31: TRILOGY

My poll 31 is inspired by YELLA, a film which I like very much. YELLA is the final part of Christian Petzold’s Ghost Trilogy. Petzold talked about this in Cineaste Magazine which you can read from the link below:
http://www.cineaste.com/articles/an-interview-with-christian-petzold.htm

An excerpt from Petzold’s interview:

“But during preproduction for Die innere Sicherheit the concept of "ghosts" was very much present in my conversations with Harun. We almost worked one full year on the film, and during that period we often discussed the idea of people who have fallen out of history. The left has fallen out of history, too. In the autobiography of German communists in the 1930s, for instance, we frequently find that they feel not needed anymore: National Socialism is in power, Stalinism is not an alternative, so they end up in a no-man's land. For instance, Georg K. Glaser, author of the autobiography Geheimnis und Gewalt, moves to Paris as a coppersmith in 1935, where he initially hid and eventually lived the rest of his life. He invented the concept of "the silence of history" for himself. He suddenly realizes, as if on a sailboat on the ocean, that there's no wind anymore: a ghostly atmosphere, where no one needs you anymore, where there is no drive left. Based on these conceptual issues I began to think whether it is not the case that the cinema does not always tell stories about ghosts anyway: stories of people who have fallen out of love, out of work processes, people for whom there is no use anymore. Through these reflections we ended up moving from Die innere Sicherheit, which concerns the political left and terrorism, to the girls in Gespenster who have no biography, no genealogy, and for whom the generalized labor process has no use, to, finally, Yella, which is a film about a woman who exists in a twilight zone between death and life.”

Since I love all the three films in Christian Petzold’s Ghost Trilogy, I think I should make a list of my favorite trilogies here. Some of the trilogies below may be unofficial. Some are debatable if they are trilogies or not, such as Antonioni’s trilogy, because some consider them to form a tetralogy with RED DESERT.

I LOVE THESE TRILOGIES. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI: L’AVVENTURA (1960); LA NOTTE (1961); THE ECLIPSE (1962)

2.DARIO ARGENTO: SUSPIRIA (1976); INFERNO (1980); THE MOTHER OF TEARS (2007)

3.LAURENCE ATTALI: EVEN THE WIND (1999); BAOBAB (2000); THE UNSHOD MAN (2003)

4.LUCAS BELVAUX: ON THE RUN; AN AMAZING COUPLE; AFTER THE LIFE (2002)

5.INGMAR BERGMAN: THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY (1961); WINTER LIGHT (1962); THE SILENCE (1963)

6.JEAN COCTEAU: THE BLOOD OF A POET (1930); ORPHEUS (1950); THE TESTAMENT OF ORPHEUS (1960)

7.WES CRAVEN: SCREAM (1996); SCREAM 2 (1997); SCREAM 3 (2000)

8.MICHAEL HANEKE: THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (1989); BENNY’S VIDEO (1992); 71 FRAGMENTS OF A CHRONOLOGY OF CHANCE (1994)

9.NATHAN HOMSUP + DHAN LHAOW: TEXAS SOMYOT MASSCARE: THE KILLING FIELD (2005); ULTIMATE WEAPON (2006); VINCENT ECLIPSE FAITH SKYMIRROR (2006)

--I’m very glad that MY GRANDFATHER is one of the winners. This is surely one of my most favorite Thai films of this year. As for Thai films which are longer than 30 minutes, MY GRANDFATHER is now my second most favorite of this year. The number one spot is still SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE (A TOUGH CREATURE WHO BURDENS THE EARTH) (2008, Paisit Panpruegsachat, A+++++). What makes me prefer SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE to MY GRANDFATHER is the different forms or styles between these two films. SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE is very strange to me. I don’t know how to categorize this film and I don’t know which genre it belongs to. It seems to be a hybrid of many things—documentary, fiction, sci-fi, film about film, etc. Its strangeness, its hybrid nature, and its playful nature is what I love very much. As for MY GRANDFATHER, its style is very simple, though its direct emotional impact is much more powerful than SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE. SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE is a film which seems to tremendously affect my brain, while MY GRANDFATHER is a film which seems to tremendously affect my heart.

--Seeing MY GRANDFATHER, in which the director’s grandfather talks about his past, makes me want to have more talks with my mother about her past. I think some people’s memory is worth recording, whether in book or in video. Since I don’t have a video camera, I can’t record my mother’s memory or her talks on video. Maybe I can use this blog to record her talks from time to time. I just talked with my mother last weekend and she told me some trivial things which I didn’t know before, such as the fact that some relatives of mine used to live in a house with no toilets. They just used their farms as their toilets. They were very poor farmers and some of them didn’t even know how to switch on the light when they came to visit us.

--One of the things that I like very much in MY GRANDFATHER is its absence of emotion-guiding music.

--MY GRANDFATHER is one of a few Thai films I saw this year which have Thai or English subtitles because the Thai characters in these films speak in local dialects which are hard to understand for Bangkokians. I hardly saw this kind of Thai films ten years ago, but I think I saw about a dozen Thai films this year which need to have Thai/English subtitles because of this reason. I think this is great, and I think these local people should be represented more and more in Thai films.

--Talking about different languages in Thailand reminds me about what Ninamori wrote in her blog. She wrote about the communication problems in her school in the south of Thailand because the teacher and the students speak different languages.

Ninamori wrote in Thai about this problem here:
http://ninamori.blogspot.com/2008/05/blog-post_20.html

--While SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY won the most votes in this poll about films concerning the director’s family, it should be noted that the censorship board of Thailand commented on SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY as follows:

“The filmmaker disgracefully humiliates his parents before a global audience.”

--The censor of SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY is the event which seems to spawn at least four great short films

1.YE…DHAMMA (2007, Watthana Rujirojsakul)

2.SPORT NEWS (2008, Manussak Dokmai)

3.I WILL RAPE YOU WITH THIS SCISSORS (2008, Napat Treepalawisetkun)

4.DISEASES AND A HUNDRED YEAR PERIOD (2008, Sompot Chidgasornpongse)

--It’s hard for me to describe why I love A CENTURY OF LOVE very much. The film seems to have no story. It just records an old couple moving about in their own house. But somehow the images in this film affect me very strongly, as strongly as films by Marguerite Duras or Bela Tarr.

FILMVIRUS' BOOKS IN THAI SHORT FILMS

This is my comment in Twilight Virus’ blog:
http://twilightvirus.blogspot.com/2008/08/blog-post_3566.html

SPACE INVADERS NEED A RESOLUTION REMIX

This is my comment in Bioscope webboard:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=71.1650

Conference of Birds Gallery

I am very impressed with Tuksina Pipitkul’s interview in Fine Art Magazine, July 2008. The interviewer is Andrews Little, the owner of Conference of Birds Gallery.

Excerpt from the interview:

Tuksina Pipitkul (Haru): As a child, I was always told, “Thais are compassionate.” And “Thais are so helpful”. I frequently heard that “Thailand is Buddhism.” and all aspects of my environment stressed the importance of mercy toward sentient beings. This degree of mercy and compassion can be achieved in meditation.

Now I wonder if what I heard is true. My work seeks to directly challenge this Thai Buddhist moral framework. I have always seen one of my neighbors give food to monks each morning so that he can gain merit. I have also seen this same neighbor kill an old dog that was lying in front of his driveway. He just drove a car right over the animal. At another point I saw him poisoning baby dogs. Belief is complicated, and often contradictory, but there is a limit to how much I hope to interrogate it. I only know that we should respect other sentient things because all such things have only one life.

You can find more information about Tuksina Pipitkul’s work here:
http://www.conferenceofbirds.com/Haru.html

Fine Art Magazine’s website:
http://www.fineart-magazine.com/index.html

In my own opinion, I think Tuksina Pipitkul is one of the most interesting Thai female filmmakers this year. The other two are Arpapun Plungsirisoontorn (REPEATING DRAMATIC) and Fari Tesprateep (THE THING).

http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2008/08/i-film-my-village-2006-shao-yuzhen.html

Moses

http://www.kahloucha.com/

TURKISH SUPERMAN (1979, Kunt Tulgar)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9oI7Fd3Uec

WHAT HAPPENED TO MAGDALENA JUNG?

I FILM MY VILLAGE (2006, Shao Yuzhen, A+++++)

One thing that I like very much in the Marathon Thai Short Film Festival is the films made by rural people. Most of these films are strange to me. They don’t observe the aesthetic rules like most film university students do. I think the number of Thai provincial filmmakers is increasing because the filmmaking technology gets cheaper and cheaper. I’m curious if there will be a new kind of film language emerging after many rural people start making their own films.

This kind of thing reminds me of the stories about Jean Rouch and Aleksandr Medvedkin. I have heard that they used to teach some native or rural people to make their own films.

It also reminds me of a Chinese omnibus film I saw in June. It is VILLAGERS’ DOCUMENTARY PROJECT (2006, Wu Wenguang, A). I think you can still watch this film at Conference of Birds Gallery.

You can read the details of this omnibus film here:
http://conferenceofbirds.hi5.com/friend/profile/displayJournal.do?viewother=true&ownerId=47945001

The omnibus film opens with an introductory short film called SEEN AND HEARD (2006, Jian Yi, A), and then it is followed by 10 short films.

In my roughly preferential order

TO LEAVE A HUSBAND

This is my comment in a friend’s blog:

WALL E (A+/A) VS. ON THE MOON (2007, Dhan Lhaow, A+)

This is my comment in Dechito’s blog:
http://dechito.blogspot.com/2008/08/wall-e.html

I think the ending of WALL E (2008, Andrew Stanton, A+/A) is very intriguing for me. Its ending credit makes me fear that the human civilization may destroy itself again, or maybe not. In the ending credit, we can see the ending story being told through many art styles. It starts with the ancient art, and the art styles keep moving forward chronologically, and seem to end with the style of the Impressionist and Vincent Van Gogh, or end with the style of art before the First World War. The story ends happily, but the art style used in the ending credit unintentionally makes me think that there may be a next World War waiting to happen, or the new civilization may run into the same horrifying troubles as in the twentieth century. The film doesn’t show us directly that the ruination of mankind may happen again, but seeing the art styles used in the ending credit makes me think about it.

Though I like WALL E very much, I give it only A+/A because the topic of the film doesn’t interest me that much. I think its ending is good, but somehow it is not extremely satisfying for me. Coincidentally, I just saw a Thai short animation called ON THE MOON (2007, Dhan Lhaow, A+), which I prefer to WALL E. In this animation, we see the heroine destroy the whole world with her powerful bomb, but I’m not sure why she does it. Then we see the sad hero begin to smile without reason. I don’t know what this film or its ending means actually, but its ending is weirdly satisfying for me, much more satisfying than the ending of WALL E.

If you are interested, you can watch ON THE MOON here:
http://dhanlhaow.multiply.com/video/item/49/The_Moon

---------------------------------

It is said that the ending credit of WALL E imitates the art styles of Auguste Renoir, Georges Seurat, and Vincent Van Gogh.

Suddenly, Last Winter
(Improvvisamente L’Inverno Scorso)
Italy / 2008 / 80 min
Director Gustav Hofer และ Luca Ragazzi

WISH LIST FOR JULY 2008

WISH LIST FOR JULY 2008

A.FILM

1.BEHIND THE GLASS (2008, Zrinko Ogresta, Croatia, 80 min)
I love the faces of the characters in the trailer of this film. You can watch its trailer from the link below:
http://www.kviff.com/en/film-detail/2275-behind-the-glass/

Synopsis from the link above:

“Problems which have been brewing for years for successful 35-year-old architect Nikola Jeren come to a head in the space of five days. A life of lies and emotional turmoil has taken its toll on the man, he has no self-respect and doesn’t know what he really wants. His long-term mistress Ana, a work colleague, is weary from all the years they’ve had to conceal their relationship; she wants him to get a divorce. His wife Maja, the mother of Nikola’s 8-year-old daughter, is also pressing him to finally come to a decision. Nikola is imprisoned in a situation which cannot be resolved: whatever he does, he’ll only hurt everyone he ever loved even more. Can something decide for us, something we’re no longer used to expecting in life – a tragic coincidence? Director Zrinko Ogresta doesn’t judge the characters in his intimate psychological drama, but he presents a sensitive yet harsh view of their weaknesses. At the same time, however, he poses a vital question: to what extent are we responsible masters of our own destiny and thus also architects of the world we inhabit?”

5.MEADOWLARK (2008, Taylor Greeson, USA, documentary, 77 min)
http://www.taylorgreeson.com/meadowlark/extended_about.html

Synopsis of the film from the link above:
“When I was twelve years old, my brother Charlie was murdered by a man named Frank Fuhrmann, I lost my virginity to a 20 year old man, and I was ordained with the priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. My graduate thesis film for the California Institute of the Arts is an autobiographical documentary that explores these events and their aftermath. The film will share with others my unique journey into manhood and, I hope, resonate with audiences living in an era of continuous cycles of violence.

Meadowlark will comprise volumes of family photos, newspaper articles and legal documents regarding my brother’s death, and 16mm film shot in various locations in Montana and at my mom’s home in New Mexico. I am talking with people involved in my brother’s homicide case and subsequent trial, families that now inhabit homes where I used to live, my own family, and I am eventually speaking to the man responsible for my brother’s death. This is a very personal endeavor; at times the subject material is difficult and painful to engage, but I am guided by a belief that confronting and talking about the horrible events that we experience is a way to help all of us understand those events more profoundly.

The breathtaking landscapes of my youth keep a multitude of secrets. Meadowlark exposes them. My hope is that an audience will see this film and leave the theater feeling as though they were invited into an intimate, personal story--a story that is remarkable, but not altogether foreign to the social landscape of America.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30akjE_AOhs
http://www.german-films.de/app/filmarchive/film_view.php?film_id=1794

Synopsis from the link above:

“Tracing my two mothers in Riga is my personal history.

I was born Holger Mischwitzky in Riga/Latvia, on November 25th, 1942. In 2000, my then 94-year-old mother told me I was not her son and that she had found me in a children’s home in Riga during the German occupation. That was all she was prepared to say. She died in 2003.
Initially I didn’t want to start searching, she had been a loving mother to me. Two years later I did become curious, but not knowing my real family name, I thought searching would be futile. With the help of a Latvian journalist I met Agnese who discovered intriguing things in the national archive.

Amazingly enough, I eventually found my real birth certificate in Berlin which stated that I had been born in Riga in the central prison in 1942.

I start searching for my mother. Will I find her or her family? Will I be able to find out something about my father? After 63 years, I decide to fly to Riga and start searching for my two mothers’ traces.

C. EXHIBITION WISH LIST
UTA BARTH’S EXHIBITION

You can read Uta Barth’s interview here:
http://www.jca-online.com/barth.html

Excerpt from the interview:

“On the most obvious level, we all expect photographs to be pictures of something. We assume that the photographer observed a place, a person, an event in the world and wanted to record it, point at it. There is always something that motivated the taking of a photograph. The problem with my work is that these images are really not of anything in that sense, they register only that which is incidental and peripheral implied. Instead, there are some clues to indicate that what we are looking at is the surrounding information. (The images lack focus because the camera's attention is somewhere else. Many of the compositions, while clearly deliberate and carefully arranged in relation to the picture's edge, are awkward, off balance and formally suggest a missing element.) Slowly it becomes clear that what we are presented with is a sort of empty container and it is at that point that people begin to "project" into this space. It begins to read as an empty screen. A second aspect might be that many people relate to the pictures in terms of memory. They are pretty saturated with the formal conventions of portraiture and one has a sense of inescapable familiarity when looking at them. What comes to mind is an entire inventory of other pictures seen. The point of engagement that perhaps interests me the most, though, has to do with one's perceptual reorientation in relation to the pictures when trying to decode the space described. If the "subject" is not fixed within the image on the wall, but instead is indicated to be in front of that, then the "location" of the work hangs somewhere between the viewer and the wall, in that empty space we are looking through.”

TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL

This is my comment in Girish’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/08/tiff-2008-film-list.html

--Based on previous works of these directors, I recommend these new films which I haven’t seen:

1.AFTER THE RACE (Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Austria)
Geyrhalter directed OUR DAILY BREAD.

2.CITIZEN JULING (Ing K + Kraisak Choonhavan + Manit Sriwanichpoom, Thailand)
Manit is a great photographer, and I am still deeply shocked by some of his recent photos. I don’t know if his film is good or not, but I recommend the film for those who are interested in politics or religious conflicts.

3.THE COUNTRY TEACHER (Bohdan Slama, Czech)
Slama directed WILD BEES (2001).

4.DERNIER MARQUIS (Rabah Ameur-Zaimeche, France/Algeria)
He directed BLED NUMBER ONE (2006).

5.DIOSES (Josue Mendez, Peru)
Mendez directed DAYS OF SANTIAGO (2004)

6.PANDORA’S BOX (Yesim Ustaoglu, Turkey)
Ustaoglu directed WAITING FOR THE CLOUDS (2003).

7.PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1 (Jean-Francois Richet, France)
Richet directed ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (2005) and ETAT DES LIEUX (1995).

8.SUT (Semih Kaplanoglu, Turkey)
Kaplanoglu directed ANGEL’S FALL (2005) and EGG (2007).

9.UNDER THE TREE (Garin Nugroho, Indonesia)
Nugroho directed AND THE MOON DANCES (1995).

If I have to choose only one film among these, I will choose Kaplanoglu’s film.

--I also wish I could see THE HEADLESS WOMAN by Lucrecia Martel, because Apichatpong said that this is his most favorite film in the Cannes film festival this year. Unfortunately, only Jeanne Balibar and him fought for this film among the Cannes jury, so that’s why it didn’t get any awards. Apichatpong also said that he liked FRONTIER OF DAWN (Philippe Garrel) very much.

POLL 30: RUNNING IN THE FAMILY by Level 42

My poll 30 is inspired by many Thai films I just saw and like very much. These Thai films are documentaries about the directors’ own families. So I decided to make a list of my favorite films about this topic.

Normally I hate films which support the family institution, because they are usually didactic, and I can’t identify with the characters. But these Thai documentaries are not didactic. Most of them are just direct expression of love between the directors and the subjects of the films. I particularly love the film MY GRANDFATHER by Pichet Smerchua very much. Seeing his grandfather’s eyes and listening to his grandfather’ talk about life make me cry. I don’t know how Pichet did it, but I think this film is full of the power of LIFE.

Pichet Smerchua also directed BANGKOK BEAUTY (2008, A+), which was shown in the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival 5. You can watch this film in Pichet’s blog. It is at the bottom of his page.
http://hidoryfilmhomeproduct.spaces.live.com/default.aspx

I LOVE THESE FILMS WHICH ARE ABOUT THE DIRECTORS’ OWN FAMILIES. WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE?

1.A CENTURY OF LOVE (2008, Chalermrat Gaweewattana, Thailand)

2.CHAC (2000, Kim-Chi Tyler, USA)

3.GHOSTS (2005, Anocha Suwichakornpong, Thailand)

4.HOMEMADE SAKE (2001, Ono Satoshi, Japan)

5.HOME VIDEO (2008, Yanin Pongsuwan, Thailand)

--KAZUYOSHI ANDO AND KGB KUMHWOY is a very funny film, and not too sadistic as some other films by Nathan Homsup + Dhan Lhaow. Before I saw this film, I didn’t like the song I BELIEVE I CAN FLY at all. But this film uses this song in a very funny way, and can turn this boring song into a memorable song for me.

Other things I like in this film:

--two university students clapping their hands to kill the time

--some supporting characters make different choices from one another. I like films whose supporting characters are different from one another like this.

--the creative technique used to present a character being run over by a car

--The topic of this film, which is about “rubnong”, or the tradition in which senior students bully freshmen very cruelly. I hate this tradition very much, and think that it should be abolished long time ago.

Talking about this tradition reminds me of my favorite scene in DOMINO (2005, Tony Scott, A+), in which Domino fights the senior girl in the dorm who bullies her.

--I love the ending of this film. I’m not sure what the ending means, but it makes me think about the fact that everyone is different and has many problems of his own. Some people have too many problems in their lives already, and should not be bullied by others or should not be pressured to observe some nonsensical traditions like this. Some people say that this tradition helps cause unity among students. I think it may be true for only some students, but it can be harmful to other students at the same time. As for me, this tradition didn’t help make me like anyone in my class at all. I like some friends in my class, because these friends are good, not because some people force me to like these friends. This tradition only makes me strongly hate the society which believes in it.

LAST SUPPER (2005, Bigert & Bergstrom, A+)

The documentary film LAST SUPPER (2005, Bigert & Bergstrom, Sweden, A+) is shown at Conference of Birds Gallery from 12 August – 3 September 2008.

The information below is from Conference of Birds Gallery:
http://www.conferenceofbirds.com

“The last supper has been given to prisoners facing the death penalty as long as the punishment has existed. The tradition stems from funeral rites where the deceased person was given food on his deathbed to protect him on his journey to the afterlife. Today, the ritual of giving the last supper to the condemned person has been de-tached from its origin, and can be perceived to be as absurd as the punishment it accompanies.

Last Supper focuses on this discrepancy between historical "meaning" and contemporary use of a tradition that has lost its connection with the past.

The film mixes documentary material with sculptural installations and animated graphics. The main character is the former death row chef Brian Price, who reconstructs one of the 200 final meals that he prepared during his time as inmate in Huntsville State Prison, Texas, US.

The film was shot during 2004 in the US, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, Kenya, South Africa and Sweden. Last Supper is projected in "The Blue Sky Room", a reconstruction of a witness room for an execution chamber.

--------------------

I like this film a lot, though I have trouble listening to the prison’s chef in this film, as my English listening comprehension is very bad.

I also saw another documentary about capital punishment in July. It is called UN ABOLITIONNISTE (2001, Joel Calmettes, France, A+++++). I like the style of this film very much. It just uses voiceover and slides, but can captivate my attention completely. The film also shows us the image of the slide machine many many times, and I like it a lot.

As for my own opinion on capital punishment, I can’t make up my mind whether I support it or not. I think abolishing capital punishment may be a good thing, because many innocent people are wrongly convicted, so as long as they haven’t been executed, they still have a chance to prove their innocence if some evidence comes up. But as for some serial killers who are not wrongly convicted, I think they deserve their death sentence. Yes, I am a merciless person. :-)

DECEPTIVE LANDSCAPES

This is my comment in Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/08/creative-geography-in-cinema.html

Maybe this is not directly related to your post, but talking about the interesting use of geography/locations in films reminds me of these films:

--WOLF CREEK (2005, Greg McLean), ROGUE (2007, Greg McLean)

These two Australian films present the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, but these two films are extremely anti-tourist. I love the sense of evil lurking in these extremely beautiful locations.

--PHANTOM LOVE (2007, Nina Menkes)
In this film, the heroine seems to live in American neighbourhood, but the heroine works in a casino full of Chinese people, and the heroine seems to walk in India from time to time. Therefore, I don’t know exactly where the story really takes place.

--Some films can turn its real location into something fantastic: FATA MORGANA (1971, Werner Herzog), VACANCY (1998, Matthias Mueller), BIRTH OF THE SEANEMA (2004, Sasithorn Ariyavicha)

--Some films can turn its mundane location into something adventurous: LE PONT DU NORD (1982, Jacques Rivette), TURTLES SWIM FASTER THAN EXPECTED (2005, Satoshi Miki)

--Some films can turn its location full of junk and debris into something fantastic: 4 (2004, Ilya Khrzhanovsky), SAT WIBAK NAK LOKE (2008, Paisit Panpruegsachat)

--Some filmmakers turn an empty beach in the present day into one in the future world: GLEN AND RANDA (1971, Jim McBride),
THE STRANGERS IN THE SEA (2008, Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWC0enV1l0E

--The story of INDIA SONG (1975, Marguerite Duras) takes place in India, but I think the film was shot in France. The story of THE KUMPANY 2 (2008, Nathan Homsap + Dhan Lhaow) takes place in China, but the film was shot in a university in Bangkok.

DIED ON 6TH OCTOBER, 1976 (2008, Manit Sriwanichpoom, A++++++++++)

I went to see the art exhibition FLASHBACK ’76: HISTORY & MEMORY OF OCTOBER 6 MASSACRE (A+++++) yesterday, and like it very much. This exhibition is held at Pridi Banomyong Institute, Sukhumvit Soi 55, from 2-23 August 2008.

The exhibition includes works by Ing K (a Thai female filmmaker/painter), Sutee Kunavichayanont, Vasan Sitthiket, and Manit Sriwanichpoom. Unfortunately, I couldn’t watch the video directed by Vasan Sitthiket, because the video machine there seemed to be broken.

I love the photo series by Manit Sriwanichpoom in this exhibition very much. This series is called DIED ON 6TH OCTOBER 1976.

You can get the brochure of this exhibition by buying the Thai magazine “WIPASA”, issue 12.

The information below is copied from the brochure. It is written by Manit Sriwanichpoom:

“I enlarged the pictures and immersed each one in a developing tray filled with fresh blood. Slowly, the picture would float up toward the surface of the blood. I watched as the faces of the martyrs gradually emerged from the red depths, as if their souls were entering the pictures, bringing them back to life. Like inky monsoon clouds refusing to disperse, the blood did not clear away completely and parts of their faces remained in shadow. Before pressing the shutter, I raised my hands to pay respect, praying to each one: if there is something you want to say to the people of today, please manifest your message through my work and I will be your channel.

One young woman, who could’ve been my older sister, reddened her eyes deeply as if in response, an unforgettable image that will forever stay with me.”

--For those who are interested in images of atrocity, you may read this interesting article by Graham Coulter-Smith:

--The topic of the Bangkok massacre in October 6, 1976 makes me want to see these films:

1.THREE BULLETS (1977, Senee Gomarachun, Thailand)
http://www.thaifilmdb.com/th/tt03230

Since the massacre was caused by the extreme rightists, I am interested in this film, which unashamedly supports the extreme rightists. In this film, a father killed his son with three bullets, because his son doesn’t believe in the nation, the religion, and the monarchy.

2.CANOA (1976, Felipe Cazals, Mexico)
