BONTOC EULOGY

This is my comment in Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2009/01/favorite-cinema-discoveries-in-08.html

Noel, I feel very glad to have a chance to see BONTOC EULOGY. I hadn’t heard anything about this film before I saw it in the Thai Short Film Festival. I guess Alexis Tioseco might be the one who choose to show this film in the festival.

I just read Oggs Cruz’s review of this film in his blog (http://oggsmoggs.blogspot.com/2009/01/bontoc-eulogy-1995.html ). It is a great review, and it made me realize that this film is a faux documentary (or maybe you can call it a hybrid between documentary and fiction), though I used to think of it as a real documentary. I think its hybridity is one of the main reasons why I love this film, because I can’t separate fact from fiction in this film. I find this mixing of fact and imagination quite fascinating. The well-researched information presented in this film, the rare archival footage, and the great imagination of the director help make the person who lived and died about a hundred years ago come to life again vividly in the audience’s imagination.

Apart from being an informative film, BONTOC EULOGY is also poignant. It doesn’t lack emotions. We don’t only “know” about the lives of those tribal Filipinos, but we also get to understand how they might have “felt” while living in the world fair. I also felt quite moved near the end of the film. I think this film would make a great double bill with THE HALFMOON FILES (2007, Phillip Sheffner, Germany), which is also a great documentary about some ethnic minorities in a foreign land who became the target of some anthropological surveys.

BOOK WISH LIST: NINE (Andrzej Stasiuk)

Thanks to Sonthaya Subyen who told me about this book.

This is an excerpt from the review of this book by Robert Buckeye:

http://www.wordswithoutborders.org/?lab=StasiukNineReview

“It is the blasted landscape the films of Bela Tarr, Fred Kelemen and Ilya Khrzhanovsky conditioned us to see. A vista the surrealist landscapes of Jan Saudek opened up. The grim, abandoned backwater of an Eastern Europe writhing under runaway capitalism. We have entered Tarkovsky’s Zone. Raskolnikov stalks the streets of St. Petersburg. The bicycle chain swings in the street. An eye is gouged out”

FAVORITE OLD FILMS SEEN IN 2008

This is my comment in Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2009/01/favorite-cinema-discoveries-in-08.html

--Ryland, I have seen only two films by Jacques Doillon: THE CRYING WOMAN (1979) and LA PURITAINE (1986). I much prefer LA PURITAINE, because it is strange in the way it is mixing life and theatre. THE CRYING WOMAN is good, but I think it is just as good as many French films dealing with adultery and marital problems.

--My favorite old films seen in 2008:

1.MOSES AND AARON (1975, Jean-Marie Straub + Daniele Huillet)
I don’t think I should use the word “entertaining” with films by Straub+Huillet, but since my vocabulary knowledge is very limited, I have to say for now that I feel very entertained (maybe there is a better word?) or captivated by this opera/musical film, which is the opposite of what I feel for THE CHRONICLE OF ANNA MAGDALENA BACH and EUROPA 2005 – 27 OCTOBER. (I like these two films, too, though I have to try to focus my attention while watching these two.) I even think MOSES AND AARON entertains me or moves me much more than other opera films such as PARSIFAL (1982, Hans-Juergen Syberberg) and CARMEN (1984, Francesco Rosi).

2.JUBILEE (1977, Derek Jarman)
It is as outrageous as MADAME X: THE ABSOLUTE RULER (1978, Ulrike Ottinger).

3.HEART (1955, Kon Ichikawa)
I like the unintentionally homoerotic undertone of this film.

4.SARRAOUNIA (1986, Med Hondo, Burkina Faso)

5.SAMAR (1998, Shyam Benegal, India)

6.BOONTHING (1991, Hamer Salwala + Saipin Kulkanokwan + Orawan Ovathasarn, Thailand)
This is a very strange and memorable short film. I don’t understand anything in it at all.

7.BUNTOC EULOGY (1995, Marlon Fuentes, Philippines, documentary)

8.MOTHER (1963, Kaneto Shindo)

9.THE CREMATOR (1969, Juraj Herz, Czechoslovakia)

10.HAPPY END (1966, Oldrich Lipsky, Czechoslovakia)
This film tells its story backwards. Maybe there is nothing much in this film except its innovative way of storytelling, but if you like the narrative structure of MEMENTO or 5x2, maybe you can give this film a try.

--My favorite old horror/thriller films seen in 2008:

1.DEATH BED: THE BED THAT EATS (1977, George Barry, USA)
There is some strange charm in this film.
2.SHOCK TREATMENT (1973, Alain Jessua)
3.LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH (1971, John Hancock)
4.RED QUEEN KILLS SEVEN TIMES (1972, Emilio P. Miraglia)
5.SPIDER BABY (1968, Jack Hill)
6.LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE (1974, Jorge Grau)
7.I DRINK YOUR BLOOD (1970, David E. Durston)
8.CHILDREN SHOULDN’T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS (1972, Bob Clark)
9.DOLLS (1987, Stuart Gordon)
10.THE GHOST STORY OF YOTSUYA (1959, Nobuo Nakagawa)

Thanks to Filmsick for giving me many films in the list above. :-)

POLL 45: OFFSCREEN

POLL 45: OFFSCREEN

My poll 45 is inspired by LE MONDE VIVANT, a strange film of which its most memorable images are the ones in which we see only the hands of the characters, not the bodies or the faces of the characters.

There is something happening offscreen in every film, because every film can’t show everything which happens around the lives of its characters or every moment of its characters. In most films, the sex scenes happen offscreen, but the porn films do the opposite.

The films I choose here and the ones in which something important happens offscreen, or something which should be shown in most films is not shown in these films.

SOMETHING IMPORTANT HAPPENS OFFSCREEN OR ISN’T SHOWN IN THESE FILMS. WHICH FILMS DO YOU LIKE?

1.AU HASARD BALTHAZAR (1966, Robert Bresson, France)

2.L’AVVENTURA (1960, Michelangelo Antonioni, Italy)
The cause of the disappearance of a character and her fate are never shown or explained.

3.LA BELLE NOISEUSE (1991, Jacques Rivette, France)
The important painting is shown to the characters, but not the audience of this film.

4.BLISSFULLY YOURS (2002, Apichatpong, Weerasethakul, Thailand)
A middle-aged guy is shot dead by some thieves in this film, but it happens offscreen. We only hear its noises. But his corpse turns up in the beginning of TROPICAL MALADY.

5.CASA DE LAVA (1994, Pedro Costa, Portugal)
I think the ending part of this film is so full of ellipses that I don’t understand anything any more.

You can read about CASA DE LAVA in The Evening Class’ blog here:
http://theeveningclass.blogspot.com/2008/03/pedro-costa-and-others-on-casa-de-lava.html

6.EUROPA 2005 – 27 OCTOBER (2006, Jean-Marie Straub + Daniele Huillet, France)
The death of the two teenagers happened before this film begins.
You can watch this film here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGU06JQ92lc

7.FACE, MASK (หน้า, หน้ากาก) (2008, Eakapojd Djangkijkul, Thailand)
I watched this short film only once, and I don’t understand it at all in the first viewing. I guess there’s a crime happening in this film, but I’m not sure which characters are the criminals and which are the victims. The crime scenes may be omitted from this film, may be not. We may see only what some characters do before and after the crimes.

8.FALLEN (2005, Fred Kelemen, Latvia)
The suicide of one or two characters happens offscreen.

9.5 x 2 (2004, Francois Ozon, France)
We are never sure about the causes of the break-up of this couple.

10.FORGET ME (1994, Noemie Lvovsky, France)
There’s a car accident scene in this film, but we see only the face of the heroine (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), and are not quite sure how the accident looks like.

11.4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS (2007, Cristian Mungiu, Romania)
There are two rapes happening offscreen in this film. In fact, I think rape scenes are one of the most frequently omitted scenes in films, with understandable reasons.

12.GHOSTS (2005, Christian Petzold, Germany)
We never see or know if one of the heroines has that birthmark or not.

13.GLORIA (1999, Manuela Viegas,Portugal)
There are ellipses near the end of the film, and many viewers are not sure about what really happens.

14.THE HEADLESS WOMAN (2008, Lucrecia Martel, Argentina)

15.LORNA’S SILENCE (2008, Jean-Pierre Dardenne + Luc Dardenne, Belgium)
The murder of a character happens offscreen.

16.LE MONDE VIVANT (2003, Eugene Green, France)

17.NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007, Joel Coen + Ethan Coen, USA)
The murders of two important characters happen offscreen near the end of the film.

18.A SCENE AT THE SEA (1991, Takeshi Kitano, Japan)

19.SHARA (2003, Naomi Kawase, Japan)
I’m not sure what happens to the brother of the hero.

20.SLOW MOTION (1980, Jean-Luc Godard, France)
Marguerite Duras is offscreen in this film.

You can cast multiple votes.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD + 28 DAYS LATER ARE WINNERS

My poll 44 ended with 12 votes. Thanks very much to everyone who participated in it. Here is the result:

+GHOSTS OF MARS (2001, John Carpenter, USA)
+RESURRECTION (2008, Sorrawis Rawitiwagul + Harin Paesongthai, Thailand)
Each of these films got 1 vote, or 8 %.

+LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE (1974, Jorge Grau, Spain/Italy)
+PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987, John Carpenter, USA)
+UNDEAD (2002, Peter Spierig + Michael Spierig, Australia)
+ZOMBIE SELF-DEFENSE FORCE (2005, Naoyuki Tomomatsu, Japan)
Each of these films got 0 vote.

If I were to face with zombies, I think I will do what the Amish guy do in DIARY OF THE DEAD—just committing suicide.

--I just found an essay by Jonas Mekas in Invisible Cinema’s blog. I like it very much, so I copied it here.:
http://invisiblecinema.typepad.com/invisible_cinema/2006/08/guest_blogger_j.html

Anti-100 years of cinema manifesto
by Jonas Mekas

"As you well know it was God who created this Earth and everything on it. And he thought it was all great. All painters and poets and musicians sang and celebrated the creation and that was all OK. But not for real. Something was missing. So about 100 years ago God decided to create the motion picture camera. And he did so. And then he created a filmmaker and said 'now here is an instrument called motion picture camera. Now go and film and celebrate the beauty of the creation and the dreams of human spirit, and have fun with it.'

But the devil did not like that. So he placed a money bag in front of the camera and said to the filmmakers 'why do you want to celebrate the beauty of the world and the spirit of it if you can make money with this instrument?' And, believe it or not, all filmmakers ran after the money bag. The Lord realized he had made a mistake. So some 25 years later, to correct his mistake, God created independent avant-garde filmmakers and said, 'here is the camera. Take it and go into the world and sing the beauty of all creation and have fun with it. But you will have a difficult time doing it, and you will never make any money with this instrument.'

Thus spoke the Lord to Viking Eggeling, Germaine Dulac, Jean Epstein, Fernand Leger, Dmitri Kirsanoff, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Richter, Luis Bunuel, Man Ray, Cavalcanti, Jean Cocteau, and Maya Deren, and Sidney Peterson, and Kenneth Anger, Gregory Markopoulos, Stan Brakhage, Marie Menken, Bruce Baillie, Francis Lee, Harry Smith and Jack Smith and Ken Jacobs, Ernie Gehr, Ron Rice, Michael Snow, Joseph Cornell, Peter Kubelka, Hollis Frampton and Barbara Rubin, Paul Sharits, Robert Beavers, Christopher McLain, and Kurt Kren, Robert Breer, Dore O, Isidore Isou, Antonio De Bernardi, Maurice Lemaitre, and Bruce Conner, and Klaus Wyborny, Boris Lehman, Bruce Elder, Taka Iimura, Abigail Child, Andrew Noren and too many others. Many others all over the world. And they took their Bolex's and their little 8 and Super-8 cameras and began filming the beauty of this world, and the complex adventures of the human spirit, and they're having great fun doing it. And the films bring no money and do not do what's called useful.

And the museums all over the world are celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of cinema, costing them millions of dollars the cinema makes, all going gaga about their Hollywoods. But there is no mention of the avant-garde or the independents of our cinema.

I have seen the brochures, the programs of the museums and archives and cinematheques around the world. But these say, "we don't care about your cinema." In the times of bigness, spectaculars, one hundred million movie productions, I want to speak for the small, invisible acts of human spirit, so subtle, so small, that they die when brought out under the clean lights. I want to celebrate the small forms of cinema, the lyrical form, the poem, the watercolor, etude, sketch, portrait, arabesque, and bagatelle, and little 8mm songs. In the times when everybody wants to succeed and sell, I want to celebrate those who embrace social and daily tailor to pursue the invisible, the personal things that bring no money and no bread and make no contemporary history, art history or any other history. I am for art which we do for each other, as friends.

I am standing in the middle of the information highway and laughing, because a butterfly on a little flower somewhere in China just fluttered its wings, and I know that the entire history, culture will drastically change because of that fluttering. A super-8 millimeter camera just made a little soft buzz somewhere, somewhere on the lower east side of New York, and the world will never be the same.

The real history of cinema is invisible history. History of friends getting together, doing the thing they love. For us, the cinema is beginning with every new buzz of the projector, with every new buzz of our cameras. With every new buzz of our cameras, our hearts jump forward my friends."

-Jonas Mekas, February 11, 1996, American Center, Paris

THE DARDOS AWARD

I can’t describe how glad I am to be awarded a Dardos by Peter Nellhaus from http://www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com/ . Here is an information about this award:

“The Dardos Award is given for recognition of cultural, ethical, literary, and personal values transmitted in the form of creative and original writing. These stamps were created with the intention of promoting fraternization between bloggers, a way of showing affection and gratitude for work that adds value to the Web.”

Dardos winners must do the following:

1) Accept the award by posting it on your blog along with the name of the person who has granted the award and a link to his/her blog.

2) Pass the award to another five blogs that are worthy of this acknowledgement, remembering to contact each of them to let them know they have been selected for this award.

--I would like to pass the Dardos award to these five blogs, in alphabetical order:

1.FILMSICK (in Thai language)
http://filmsick.exteen.com/

His blog is surely my most favorite Thai blog. Filmsick just wrote about his favorite films of 2008. You can read his three-part list at:
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090102/entry
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090103/2551-2-dvd
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20090104/entry

2.INVISIBLE CINEMA by Jennifer MacMillan
http://invisiblecinema.typepad.com/

Like Filmsick, Jennifer is also both bloggers and short filmmakers. As for now Jennifer may not write about experimental films as much as before, but I still enjoy many pieces of inspirational writing or inspirational quotes in her blog. I think I am a very pessimistic person, but her blog can really help me from becoming too pessimistic about the world we live in.

3.LAUGHABLE LOVES (in Thai language)
http://laughable-loves.blogspot.com/

Though I don’t have time to read books or novels anymore, I can’t stop reading book reviews in this blog.

4.MERVEILLESXX (in Thai language)
http://www.bloggang.com/mainblog.php?id=merveillesxx

Merveillesxx has written less and less about films in his blog during the past year, because he now writes for some magazines. But I still enjoy his blog a lot, because he has posted a lot of photos from galleries around Bangkok in his blog. You can go straight to the gallery section in his blog at:
http://www.bloggang.com/viewdiary.php?id=merveillesxx&group=9

5.OGGS' MOVIE THOUGHTS (LESSONS FROM THE SCHOOL OF INATTENTION)
http://oggsmoggs.blogspot.com/

I have become very interested in Philippine cinema during the past few years. Reading this blog by Oggs Cruz can quench my thirst for information about Philippine cinema, which I think is one of the most interesting cinemas in the world nowadays.

TEERAWAT MULVILAI AS THREE ETHNIC CHARACTERS

This is my reply to TT REVIEW’s article on DEEP IN THE JUNGLE (B+ ) in his blog:
http://ttreview.exteen.com/20090111/entry

NINE CRITICS FROM STARPICS CHOOSE "THE MIST"

How joyful I was to read from Starpics magazine No. 742 (first January 2009) that nine film critics choose THE MIST (2007, Frank Darabont, A+) as one of their most favorite films of 2008!!!!! There’s also another critic called Chatchai in Starpics, who wrote that he is not very impressed by THE MIST, but THE MIST left something in his mind and he couldn’t help pondering about it for many days.
http://www.starpics.co.th/

The nine film critics who choose THE MIST are:

1.Somkiat Chintrakulwattana
He chooses THE MIST and ROGUE (2007, Greg McLean, Australia) as his most favorite films of 2008.

2.Supang

3.Saranyu Treesukon

4.ent

5.Pumpui

These female twin critics/filmmakers also choose HORTON HEARS A WHO as one of their most favorite films, and made an interesting observation that the men in three films (HITMAN, MAX PAYNE, QUANTUM OF SOLACE) deny (or are not ready) to have sex with
Olga Kurylenko.

6.Seranee Thonggone

7.Soontra

8.Tanapat Choowatiwat

This critic chooses THE MIST and THE RUINS (2008, Carter Smith) as his most favorite films of 2008.

9.Turk (Star Comic)

ANOTHER ONE ARRESTED ON LESE MAJESTE

--I copied the following news from another website:

Internet user Suwicha Thakhor was arrested on a charge of insulting the monarchy (lese majeste), just one day after Thai Netizen Network, a group that defends online freedom of expression, met with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and suggested ways to reach a compromise on Internet regulation, including the issue of lese majeste.

"This arrest gives the government the opportunity to demonstrate its readiness to maintain a real dialogue by keeping a close watch on the conduct of the investigation," Reporters Without Borders said. "We urge the government to do everything possible to ensure that Thakhor is released as soon as the authorities establish that he has not done anything that violates democratic norms."

The Department of Special Investigations said Thakhor was arrested because his computer's Internet address matched the address from which comments about the king and his aides had been sent. He was picked up by the police while visiting friends in the provinces. The authorities say they suspect he knew the police were after him and that he left the capital for this reason.

Thakhor, who is being held at Department of Special Investigations headquarters in Bangkok, has denied the charges.

Supinya Klangnarong, the coordinator of Thai Netizen Network and a media advocate, spoke to Reporters Without Borders after yesterday's meeting with the prime minister. "During this meeting, we were able to express our views and concerns," she said. "Meeting with the PM is the first step to beginning negotiations aimed at seeking appropriate regulation that will uphold cyber-liberty in Thailand."

POLL 44: ZOMBIES

My poll 44 is inspired by a conversation with an American. He talked to me about how the middle-class in Bangkok are living their lives in department stores and are oblivious to the facts about the reality of Thailand and the poor people of Thailand. His description about the class problem of Thailand makes me feel as if I was living in LAND OF THE DEAD. So I think it’s time I should make a list of favorite zombie films I have seen.

When I was a little child, I used to like the fact that many people in Thailand choose to cremate the bodies of their relatives, because that’s mean Thailand would have less zombie problems than other countries in which the burial is more popular than the cremation. When I grew up, I came to understand that zombies in many films may have metaphorical meanings, other than being scary things.

I regret I haven’t seen many classic or great zombie films, such as Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAY OF THE DEAD. I also haven’t seen FIDO, LES REVENANTS (2004, Robin Campillo) and ZOMBIE STRIPPERS! (2008, Jay Lee).

THESE FILMS ARE ABOUT ZOMBIES. WHICH FILMS DO YOU LIKE?

1.CHILDREN SHOULDN’T PLAY WITH DEAD THINGS (1972, Bob Clark, USA)

2.DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978, George A. Romero, USA)

3.DEAD SNACK (ขอขบเคี้ยวสักนิดก็ยังดี) (2008, Pichanund Laohapornsvan, Thailand)
This is a short film.

4.DIARY OF THE DEAD (2007, George A. Romero, USA)

5.GHOSTS OF MARS (2001, John Carpenter, USA)

6.HOMECOMING (2005, Joe Dante, USA)
Some parts of this film make me want to cry. I also think this film should be adapted for Thailand, because a part of this film is about zombies who try to protest the right-wing who cheat the general election. If it is remade in Thailand, maybe it should be called ZOMBIES VS. COCKROACH GOVERNMENT.

7.I, ZOMBIE: THE CHRONICLES OF PAIN (1998, Andrew Parkinson, UK)
This zombie film concerns with lonely feelings like Wong Kar-wai’s films.

8.LAND OF THE DEAD (2005, George A. Romero, USA)

9.LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE (1974, Jorge Grau, Spain/Italy)

10.OTTO; OR UP WITH DEAD PEOPLE (2008, Bruce La Bruce, Germany/Canada)

11.PLANET TERROR (2007, Robert Rodriguez, USA)

12.PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987, John Carpenter, USA)

13.RESURRECTION (2008, Sorrawis Rawitiwagul + Harin Paesongthai, Thailand)
This is a short film.

14.SARS WARS (2004, Taweewat Wantha, Thailand)
Wise Kwai wrote about this funny film here:
http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/2005/04/review-sars-wars.html
http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/2009/01/on-dvd-in-hong-kong-sars-wars.html

15.SHAUN OF THE DEAD (2004, Edgar Wright, UK)

16.28 DAYS LATER...(2002, Danny Boyle, UK)

17.28 WEEKS LATER (2007, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Spain)

18.UNDEAD (2002, Peter Spierig + Michael Spierig, Australia)

19.ZOMBIE CHICK (อีสาวซากดิบ) (2007, Thitimon Mongkolsawat, Thailand)
This is a short film.

20.ZOMBIE SELF-DEFENSE FORCE (2005, Naoyuki Tomomatsu, Japan)

You can cast multiple votes.

--It’s sad that the fighting is still continuing. I don’t know what to say anymore.

Here is an article from Mohammed Fares Al Majdalawi, who wants to be a professional filmmaker:
http://electronicintifada.net/v2/article10169.shtml

Gaza is sinking in a river of blood

Mohammed Fares Al Majdalawi writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine, 11 January 2009

I want to write about the suffering of my people and my family in these days of siege against the people of Gaza. At least 888 people have been killed and more than 3,700 injured. The International Committee of the Red Cross has accused the Israeli military of repeatedly refusing to allow ambulances to go to the al-Zeitoun area of Gaza City. As a result, those who are injured become those who die, a premeditated and willful violation of human rights.

In my house we can't get basic needs. No food. No bread. No fuel. No future. Yesterday, my father went to the bakery at 5am. He waited 5 hours to get one loaf of bread, which is not enough for my family because there are 11 of us. So today it was my turn. I went to all the bakeries -- all were closed.

There is no safe place we can go. We cannot communicate with our relatives and friends -- networks are down as missiles rain on our homes, mosques and even hospitals.

Our life is centered around the burials of those who have died, our martyrs. At night our camp, Jabaliya refugee camp, is a ghost town, with no sounds other than those of Israeli military aircraft.

There is horror every minute and it is clear especially in the lives of children. For example, there were five sisters in one family killed in their home by the Israeli occupation forces. But there are 800,000 other children in Gaza, all afraid, all waiting for someone or something to help them. They are caught in a prison that is becoming a concentration camp. Every day we sleep and open our eyes to the Israeli crimes of killing children and women and destroying civilians' homes. My words are unable to convey my feelings about this life in Gaza.

I have two messages to the world, to those who claim they love peace and seek freedom.

Imagine your life consisting of no electricity, destroyed homes, the sounds and strikes of missiles, day and night, and the only hunger as great as that for food is the hunger for an end to this occupation and siege. Imagine it is not just you but your children and your family who tell you through their eyes and cries: "We are afraid of the missiles." "We cannot sleep." "We may never sleep again." Imagine you are the dam and the river of blood has turned into a flash flood. How long could you stand it?

We wouldn't have to stand it any longer if the world stood with us. If they demanded an end to the siege and the killings and demolition of houses for our children. If they demanded assistance reach the people through rallies and sit-ins.

Finally, I invite you to come to Gaza and see the Holocaust. Because despite the siege, the barriers, the killing of my people and the destruction of their homes, and the total destruction of our lives by the Israeli occupation, they cannot and will not kill the will of our people for equality and justice.

Update: After taking this testimony, the Middle East Children's Alliance received a message from Mohammed that all the homes in his neighborhood have been destroyed. He and his family are now staying at the United Nations-administered school in Jabaliya, where 43 people were killed in an Israeli attack on 6 January. He cannot reach his brother and does not know if he is alive.Mohammed Fares Al Majdawali is a university student, member of al-Assria Children's Library, and volunteer with Middle East Children's Alliance, which is sending medical aid to Gazans under siege (www.mecaforpeace.org). He lives in Jabaliya Refugee Camp with his family and aspires to be a professional filmmaker.

ส่วน THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY นั้น พี่ก็ชอบมากนะ แต่อาจจะชอบมันน้อยที่สุดในบรรดาหนังของเคน โลช 4 เรื่องที่ได้ดู ส่วนอีก 3 เรื่องที่ได้ดูก็คือ CARLA’S SONG (A+++++++++++++++), AE FOND KISS (A++++++++++) และ MY NAME IS JOE (A+)

SUBSCONCIOUSCAPE BY NORASET VAISAYAKUL

Below is an information about an art exhibition:

Subsconciouscape

15 January – 14 February 2009

by Noraset Vaisayakul

Opening 15 January 2009, 7 pm

at Gallery VER

To paraphrase today's IT-influenced terminology, what you see, in Noraset's installations, is NOT what you get or, rather, what you get is NOT what you see. The reality we see is an illusion of the reality as filmed by static machines or moving robots, yet, on monitor, it appears more real than the actual/factual reality.

The robots or machines designed to help us see reality, or any of its avatars, are they better equipped because they are mechanical devices? Or is reality a non-factual element that, on the contrary, is more easily accessible through/because of the imperfection/bias inherent to our vision or capacity to see?

At this juncture, it may be relevant to stress the predominance of the human factor in Noraset's work despite the major role assigned to electronics.. Indeed, it is the involvement of the viewer that makes it meaningful.

Noraset is constantly playing with perceptions, interposing multiple layers or screens to distract (« dis-track ») the spectactors. The latter, who are given no instructions, have to make autonomous decisions based on illusory premices, not unlike driving in the dark. There is no obvious link between their action and the end-results: they are invited to manipulate remote controls without a monitor to see what they are doing. The notion of causality is twisted. Causes still have effects but, whereas effects can/should normally be anticipated and responsibility thereof assumed, in Noraset's installations, they are unpredictable for lack of visibility. An impression of rushing forward heads down right into a wall; possibly a reminder of daily life, where we keep moving without necessarily having a sense of direction.

Noraset's work, with its multiple facets and possible readings, appears to reflect accurately his personality – rich, complex and paradoxical. The screens, traps and other deceiving devices may be there to protect himself from revealing too much. Yet, there is an evident wish to communicate (as in "Dialogue" or "Sorry", for instance) although seldom or never directly. When he shows his living space and invites people into it, Noraset accumulates signs of his presence but avoids to be there...Is it because of his modest and reserved nature or because he has understood that the real power is elsewhere, backstage, behind the scene, behind the seen?

GILES UNGPAKORN AND LESE MAJESTY

I copied this news from some websites:

Associate Professor Giles Ji Ungpakorn, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, has been summonsed to Pathumwan police station for questioning. The summons was issued as a result of a complaint filed by Special Branch Police Lt Col. Pansak Sasana-anund. Professor Ungpakorn has been accused by the above individual of lese majesty.

In a first email, Ungpakorn said he had not been told which articles or speeches had resulted in the charge against him, but later said he was being charged over his book, "A Coup for the Rich"and added that he is prepared to fight any charges "in order to defend academic freedom, freedom of expression and democracy in Thailand."

What you can do

1. Write a letter of protest/concern to Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, Government House, Bangkok, Thailand

2. Write a letter of protest/concern to the Ambassador, The Royal Thai Embassy, in your country.

3. Demand that Amnesty International take up all Lese Majesty cases in Thailand.

CLOVERFIELD, WALTZ WITH BASHIR, A SHORT FILM ABOUT THE INDIO NACIONAL และ NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

SOMETHING I OVERLOOK IN VOLUME MAGAZINE

Konmongnang wrote in his blog that he likes the articles on politics and entertainment by Roongrawee in VOLUME magazine. This is something I totally overlooked. Sometimes I bought VOLUME magazine just to keep the Centerfold section and the fashion section, and never read anything in this magazine. I intended I would throw away all the rest of the magazines. Maybe I should start reading these articles before I throw the magazines away.

This is my comment in Konmongnang’s blog:

FUNNY GAME IN THE THIRTEENTH YEAR OF DK FILMHOUSE

I went to the opening night of the exhibition THIRTEEN-YEAR CELEBRATION OF DUANGKAMOL FILMHOUSE (FILMVIRUS) at Jamjuree Art Gallery on Jan 9. Three short films were shown at the opening night:

1.ALANGKARN THEATRE (Sonthaya Subyen, A+)

This experimental documentary was shot about 20 years ago in front of Alangkarn Theatre, which was an important arthouse theatre in Bangkok at that time. Paisit Panpruegsachart made a cameo appearance in this film. I used to go to this theatre several times in late 1990s. I saw MUANG NAI MORK (1978, Permpol Choei-arun, A+), PRASART (1975, Piak Poster, A+), and CLOSE UP (1990, Abbas Kiarostami, A+) at this theatre.

2.ONE NIGHT ONE LIFE (1999, Oliver Herrmann, A+++++)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/511AEEDAREL._SS500_.jpg

3.DAS EXEMPLAR (2002, Ulrike Ottinger, A+++++)
This film satirizes the bourgeoisie.

These three films will not be shown again in this exhibition, but the exhibition will continue until January 28.

There are also many things in this exhibition, including

1.Film projectors

2.Film poster

3.Newspaper reports on films, including the report on Sasithorn Ariyavicha
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3268/3183605583_84221e2984_o.jpg

4.Brochures of Duangkamol Filmhouse (or DK Filmhouse). Reading these brochures, I regret I didn’t go to see such films as 1+1=3 (1979, Heidi Genee, West Germany) and PERFUMED NIGHTMARE (1977, Kidlat Tahimik, Philippines) at DK Filmhouse in 1996. These films are still not widely available today.

5.Reviews on greatest directors, such as Herbert Achternbusch and Marguerite Duras

6.Articles on double-bill wish lists, including the articles by

6.1 Adadol Ingawanij, who chooses SENSO (1954, Luchino Visconti) and WONDERFUL TOWN (2008, Aditya Assarat), the two films about people who cling to something in the past until it brings destructive effects.

6.2 Filmsick (Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa), who chooses two films on arguably lucky prostitutes—PRETTY WOMAN and FOX AND HIS FRIENDS (1975, Rainer Werner Fassbinder)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3301/3183608137_fb4019c757_o.jpg

6.3 Graiwoot Julpongsathorn, who chooses three films on fatal car accidents—I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1997, Jim Gillespie), DEATH OF A CYCLIST (1955, Juan Antonio Bardem, Spain), and THE HEADLESS WOMAN (2008, Lucrecia Martel)

8. HOLLYWOOD MECCA MOVIE GAME, which is my most favorite thing in this exhibition. This game is like a snake-and-ladder game. You can throw the dice and move your pawn. If you meet a Hollywood thing in your position, you will advance quickly. If you meet an arthouse thing in your position, you will step back quickly.

FOURTEEN NEW STAGE PLAYS IN BANGKOK

SOME NEW STAGE PLAYS IN BANGKOK

1.Water Time (Mizuno Zikan)

2.THE NATURE OF A CROW

This is my comment in Oliver’s blog:
http://riverdale-dreams.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post.html
