PBTB 2

PBTB 2: E-SAN NEW OLD SONGS (2016, Uthen Sririwi, A+15)

SPICY BEAUTY QUEEN IN BANGKOK 2 (ปล้นนะยะ 2 อั๊ยยยย่ะ) (2012, Poj Arnon, A+)

MID-ROAD GANG 2 (2012, Pantham Thongsang, A+)

I like it very much that the film shows us how easy Thai people can be manipulated by the media or by rumors. In this film, many Thai people try to kill a group of innocent dogs just because these people believe that the dogs are evil. Unintentionally, MID-ROAD GANG 2 shows us how Thailand can be like Rwanda.

My most favorite scene in this film is the one in which Nawat Kulrattanarak, wearing a tank top, hugs his dog on a sofa. I like the arm muscle of Nawat very much.

I like Nawat very much, but I don't have enough time to watch TV series. I'm glad to have a chance to see him in a film. I wish he took off his shirt from time to time. Hahaha.

I much prefer MID-ROAD GANG 2 to MID-ROAD GANG (2007, Pantham Thongsang + Somkiat Vituranich, B+). I think MID-ROAD GANG part 1 is just another dog movie, and I don't like dogs. But the topic about the manipulation of Thai people in MID-ROAD GANG 2 makes this film connected to THE JUDGEMENT (2004, Pantham Thongsang, A+). The role of Jer in this film is like the role of Fak in THE JUDGEMENT, both of them are branded evil by society.

There are many nice little things in this film, too, such as the role of Pikun, an old female dog who is obsessed with Buddhist teachings. This role is quite memorable. I also like the role of the grateful elephant and the conflicts between Geng and Jer. These two things don't make this film extraordinary, but makes this film as good as a very entertaining Hollywood film.

I think writing a script for this kind of films is extremely difficult, because there are too many restrictions to cope with, such as the limited ability of the dogs and the extremely limited tolerance of Thai society. If Thai society is much more broad-minded than this, I'm sure some Thai filmmakers can make a film as great as PORNDOGS: THE ADVENTURES OF SADIE (2009, Greg Blatman). :-)

LOSE (2011, Watcharapol Saisongkroh, A/A-)

You can watch this film here (no English subtitles):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FpX_UdFbSk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsccKqc-Dgs

There are a few things I like in this film, including:

1.The acting of Thitipol Rojanarowan as Golf in the film. I think his acting is quite natural. He is a real talent to watch. Golf is a kind of guy who is not expressive. He doesn't express his feelings through violent actions, strong words, or burst of tears. He is quite reserved, thus it is difficult for any young actors to play this role successfully. But I think Thitipol does a very good job in conveying the happiness, disappointment, and sadness of Golf via his eyes and his face.

However, though Thitipol is successful in playing this role, somehow I feel the film or the script of the film doesn't use or exploit his talent as much as I wish it should do. :-)

I mean I like his character very much. It should have been easy for me to feel connected with this character, because I used to experience the same kind of things that Golf experiences, such as falling for someone who belongs to a friend, being hurt by a close friend, or feeling that friendship may end because of the romantic relationship of a friend; but somehow I don't feel totally involved with this character, and I'm not sure why.

I think I might have given this film A+++++, if the film could dig deep into the feelings of Golf, especially the hurt that he experiences from falling for his friend's girlfriend and from being wrongly accused by his best friend. I think Thitipol has the ability to express those hurt feelings and other things that may make Golf a well-rounded character or look like a real human being. It's up to the filmmaker and the scriptwriter to make the best use of Thitipol's talent.

2. The beautiful cinematography and the fluid camerawork. I think the cinematography in this film is quite beautiful and its beauty is not suffocating or too intentional. However, I think some close-up scenes are a little bit too close.

I think Watcharapol's skill as a cinematographer has advanced a lot from last year. He's still very young. If he can shoot a film like this now, I'm sure he will be a good cinematographer in the future.

3.I like it very much that the film is not overdramatic. I especially like the opening scene when we see the normal activities of students. Many scenes in the film look more realistic than I expected. I mean these scenes are not really realistic, but I had expected that many films made by Thai high-school students would look melodramatic, so I can say that LOSE is not as melodramatic as I expected.

4.I like the ending of the film, or the way the film ends. The film could have ended more melodramatically, but it doesn't end like that.

I also like it very much that Golf doesn't get the girl. Judging from the girl's behavior near the end of the film (taking something without informing the owner properly), I think Golf is lucky not having a girlfriend like that. Hahaha.

5. I like that the flashback scenes near the end of the film are not repetitive, because these flashback scenes are not the scenes we have seen before in the film. However, that means I don't like the flashback scene in the middle of the film when Golf tries to decide whether he should give his doll to Fon or not. I mean this flashback scene is repetitive and may be redundant. I understand that it makes the audience understand clearly what Golf is thinking about and why he decides like that. But I would have loved it much more if there was no flashback scene in that moment, and the camera just lingered on Golf's face for one minute while he is thinking. It's just my personal taste: I like films which show the faces of the characters while they are thinking, but don't tell us straightforwardly what they are thinking about, such as SECRET DEFENSE (1997, Jacques Rivette), ONLY HUMAN (2009, Rouzbeh Rashidi), or TIME WITHIN TIME (2009, Menno Otten).

In conclusion, I think LOSE is a good film that doesn't quite fit to my personal tastes, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the story of the film is not my style. The "non-melodramatic" tone of the film is a good thing, but the film would have been more powerful as a dramatic film or a realistic film if the filmmaker/scriptwriter could find a way to dig deeper into the human qualities of his characters. I think it's just because the filmmakers are too young now. I'm sure Watcharapol will find a way to make more powerful films in the future. LOSE makes me feel certain that Watcharapol will be a good cinematographer, and I hope that life experiences, both good and bad ones, that await him in the future will help him create stories which are more powerful and great films which show us the deep understanding of human beings. I will wait and see.

THAI FILMS ABOUT MOTHER

I made this list for a friend:
http://www.facebook.com/notes/wiwat-filmsick-lertwiwatwongsa/screening-together-1-movies-with-mom/10150277748831390

This list does not include the film in the other list I made a few months ago:
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2011/05/favorite-films-about-problems-with.html

1.BLOOD WITH THE SAME COLOR (Tawiras Amatayakul, 25 min)
I don't like this film, but the mother in this film is interesting, because she has two sons. One son is a soldier. The other is a red-shirt protester. The two sons may kill each other in a political conflict.

2.I'M FINE (2011, Narisara Thanapreechakul, 23 min)
I'M FINE (นริศรา ธนปรีชากุล)
The mother in this film hires many young handsome tutors to teach her depressive daughter, because the mother wants to have sex with these teachers. I totally identify myself with the mother in this film.

3.JUST LIKE OTHER (2011, Kanitcha Apiamornkarn)
The mother-son relationship in this film is very erotic.

4.HUSH! (2010, Tanis Pintong, 25 min)
The mother in this film looks like a former prostitute, and that may be the reason why the son in this film looks unhappy or uncomfortable at first.

5.LAST SIN (Chutinat Pongtongwattana, 20 min)
The mother in this film tries to buy some narcotics to help her drug-addict son.

6.NO TIME (2011, Jutatip Jaroenruksa, 12 min)
The mother in this film doesn't have time to take care of her son, but she has a very good reason why she doesn't have time.

7.SEARCHING FOR LOVE (1984, Apichart Phopairoj)

THE HEART OF PAIN (2010, Saranij Meesorn, 15 min, A+)

From my conversation with a friend in Facebook:

ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY (Tani Thitiprawat, 30 min, A++++++++++++++++)

What I like very much in this film includes:

1.I think this film is the right combination between home video, political film, and experimental film.

2.This film reveals the poetic side of Tani Thitiprawat, especially in the segment "THE STRONG FAMILIY" and the last segment of the film.

Tani belongs to a group of Thai filmmakers called THE UNDERGROUND OFFICE. I used to think that he might not be as poetically-inclined as the other two members of the group: Teeranit Siangsanoh, who makes extremely poetic films like Derek Jarman; and Wachara Kanha, who is inspired by Wong Kar-wai. But ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY shows that Tani can make poetic films, too.

Other films made by Tani, such as DISAPPEAR (2010, 26 min, A++++++++++), TO WALK NIGHT (2009, 25 min, A++++++++++), and HUNTER THE BAG (2009, 17 min, A+/A), reminds me of Quentin Tarantino, because these three films have crazy plots, and DISAPPEAR and TO WALK NIGHT combine many film genres together. So I'm surprised to find the tender, poetic side of Tani in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY.

3.The last part of the film is very touching and made me cry. In this part, we can hear the voiceover of a man reading a poem or something like that. A part of this poem is also featured in the film FUENG (2010, Teeranit, Wachara, Tani, 28 min), which is my most favorite film I saw in 2010. The poem is used more fully in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY.

If I remember it correctly, this poem talks about a man who tries to continue living, tries to continue to be alive, tries to reconcile with the hardship in life and move on.

In this scene, we can also see some footages of the political violence in Bangkok last year. Somehow the combination between the visual (footages of political violence) and the sound (voiceover reading the poem) in this scene yields a very powerful result.

4. In a way, Tani is breaking genre boundaries in this film again. His TO WALK NIGHT is "FUNNY GAMES meets TAXI DRIVER meets 28 DAYS LATER". His DISAPPEAR is "Alfred Hitchcock meets Quentin Tarantino meets Kiyoshi Kurosawa, etc."

In ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY, we see poetic home video. The segment THE STRONG FAMILY shows the life and atmosphere of a family. This segment can stand alone as a powerful film. But its power increases exponentially when it comes after the segment interviewing Khattiya Sawasdipol before he was killed last year.

There is no obvious connection between these two segments. But I like it very much that the segments are juxtaposed like this, because it represents "many parts" of a human being--a human being who loves both his family and politics.

If one makes a film which belongs to only one genre, that film risks representing only one side, or too few sides, of human beings.

The fact that ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY combine "political documentary" genre, "home video" genre, and "poetic experimental film" genre in one film is the reason why this film can present a human being much more fully.

5. Because the segments in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY are half-connected, half-unconnected, ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY becomes stranger or weirder than many Thai documentaries which deal with the families of the directors. However, the "unconnectedness" between the segments in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY is not as strong as in Alexander Kluge's films.

Thanks to Reading Room for showing this film on March 26.

AFTERNOON LANDSCAPE (2011, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, A+)

FILMS I SAW IN THE POSTCARD CINEMA PROJECT

6.AFTERNOON LANDSCAPE (2011, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, A+)

The images in this film are shown via three small screens, like the film ABC (2006, Sompot Chidgasornpongse + Nika Shek).
http://www.sompotboat.com/works.html

The left screen shows three persons standing on a rocky beach, the middle screen shows a close-up shot of grass blowing in the wind and a sign telling the name of the place, while the right screen shows a long shot of an upcountry road under the blue sky. After a while, the middle screen turns black and then starts showing the film credits and texts about a woman who wakes up in the morning, trying to forget something. The right screen turns black later. We also hear a voiceover of a woman saying something which I don't understand, but her voice turns into a small laughter at the end of the film.

This is one of the easiest films made by Chaloemkiat, as easy as BAIYOK (2010, A+).

Things I like in this film include:

1.It is really like a postcard from a tourist place. While a postcard can show a still image of a beautiful beach and some texts, this film can show moving images of a beach, images of grasses and leaves blowing in the wind, texts, and voices.

2.The characteristics of the voice. I like the small laughter at the end of the film very much. It makes me feel good. It also reminds me that I also like the screaming female voice in CHAY, GAYVAH-RAR 'N' THE MACHUPICCHU (2009, A++++++++++) very much.

3. The unintelligibility of the voice. We hear the voice of a woman, but it is suppressed by the voice of the wind. It reminds me of the voice and sound in NEWS FROM HOME (Chantal Akerman, A+), and its unintelligibility reminds me of the unintelligibility of the texts in PERU TIME (2008, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, 18 min, A++++++++++).

4.The conflicts of the title. The Thai title of this film is VACATION IN SINGAPORE, JAVA, BALI, 11 OCT-31 JULY, 2199 A.D., but the film is like a documentary or a home video shot in Srichang Island in Thailand. The English title of this film is AFTERNOON LANDSCAPE, but the story in the texts happens at dawn.

5.It reminds me of many films I like about sea, such as

5.1 NO ONE AT THE SEA (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, A+++++)

5.2 WAKE UP TIME (2009, Chaiwat Wiansantia, A+++++)

5.3 PSYCHOHYDROGRAPHY (2010, Peter Bo Rappmund, A+++++++++++++++)

5.4 SCAR (2010, Arthawut Boonyuang, A+++++)

5.5 DREAM OF THE DEATH (2009, Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa, 25 min, A+)

PANYA RENU (2011, Bhin Banluerit, A+++++)

In a scene in PANYA RENU (2011, Bhin Banluerit, A+++++), there's a leech coming out of the penis of a character. I had never known that this thing could happen in real life, so I googled about it and found that this thing really happened in Thailand. Very scary.
