Favorite Quote from Lynne Cooke

Favorite Quote from Lynne Cooke

This is a copy of what I posted in Graiwoot's wall:

ในหนังสือ IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE, THE SOLE OBJECT OF ATTENTION SHOULD BE THE TREACHERY OF THE MOON มีคนชื่อ Lynne Cooke เขียนถึงงาน installation ชื่อ WHEN AN OBJECT GETS SICK II ของ Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook โดยเปรียบเทียบกับงานของ Eulalia Valldosera ด้วย โดย Lynne Cooke เขียนว่า

"Space is taken as a physical context rather than a neutral backdrop to the work, to the degree that installation involves guiding attention away from singular objects into complexes and relations structured within the viewing space itself. The recent recourse to this mode, first formulated in Dada and Surrealist work then regenerated by Fluxus and Conceptual artist, coincided with the reconceptualisation of notions of absence in post-structuralist theory so that rather than being conceived as mere nothingness, absence because a productive force seminal to discourse and psycholinguistics. Albeit in very different ways much of the work of Ann Hamilton, Susan Hiller, Tony Oursler, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Eulalia Valldosera and Heri Dono investigates or exploits these conceptualizations."

What Lynne Cooke wrote made me want to see the works of the artists mentioned here very much.

The photo is from FLYING ANGELS (Heri Dono).

INTERNATIONAL ARTIST? (ASIA VERSION) (2012, Wantanee Siripattananuntakul, A++++++++++++++++)

This art work comes in the form of Snakes and Ladders game. Many squares in the game contain some anecdotes of or funny parodies on the Thai art scene. The events described in the square can move you up or down in the game.

The events described in the squares are something like this:

1.You give tiger balm (ยาหม่อง) to art exhibition attendees. A curator is impressed by this kind of art very much. Your career is advanced a lot.

2. You cook spicy papaya salad (ส้มตำ) for art exhition attendees, but it gives them diarrhea. Your exhibition is shut down.

3. Your film project THE LOVE SPELL OF GRANNY MIAN (มนต์รักยายเมี้ยน) gets a lot of attention.

This art work is in the exhibition CULTURE: COMMEMORABLE, FORMLESS, SHADOWLESS, which is held on the fourth floor of BACC until March 11, 2012.

24.AR(EN')T (Isada Kusakul, animation, A-)

25.SIN (Nat Pongteekayu, A-)

This is a photo of myself in the big box, which is a part of the installation INNER REALITIES. There is a projector on the ceiling of the box. It projects some colorful video graphics onto the floor of the box. The colorful light from the projection reflects on the audience and the four walls of the box creating a wonderful experience like in the house of mirrors in an amusement park.

Talking about my own reflections, I also like the installation WHERE AM I AM ? (2011, Suwasan Chenvitit, A+++++++++++++++), which is shown in the exhibition CMD DEGREE SHOW in March 2011. If I remember it correctly, this installation places some mirrors and lights in a dark corner. When I walked near it, my presence created multiple dark reflections in the mirrors. It looks really amazing. It's like I nearly stepped into the realm of the dark shadows of Philippe Grandrieux or David Lynch or something like that, though that's not the intention of the installation artist.

As for LOAD: OVERLOAD, apart from the video installations listed above, I also like the installation EM-PA-TEA (Thiencharas Wongpisetkul, A++++++++++).

SUBSCONCIOUSCAPE BY NORASET VAISAYAKUL

Below is an information about an art exhibition:

Subsconciouscape

15 January – 14 February 2009

by Noraset Vaisayakul

Opening 15 January 2009, 7 pm

at Gallery VER

To paraphrase today's IT-influenced terminology, what you see, in Noraset's installations, is NOT what you get or, rather, what you get is NOT what you see. The reality we see is an illusion of the reality as filmed by static machines or moving robots, yet, on monitor, it appears more real than the actual/factual reality.

The robots or machines designed to help us see reality, or any of its avatars, are they better equipped because they are mechanical devices? Or is reality a non-factual element that, on the contrary, is more easily accessible through/because of the imperfection/bias inherent to our vision or capacity to see?

At this juncture, it may be relevant to stress the predominance of the human factor in Noraset's work despite the major role assigned to electronics.. Indeed, it is the involvement of the viewer that makes it meaningful.

Noraset is constantly playing with perceptions, interposing multiple layers or screens to distract (« dis-track ») the spectactors. The latter, who are given no instructions, have to make autonomous decisions based on illusory premices, not unlike driving in the dark. There is no obvious link between their action and the end-results: they are invited to manipulate remote controls without a monitor to see what they are doing. The notion of causality is twisted. Causes still have effects but, whereas effects can/should normally be anticipated and responsibility thereof assumed, in Noraset's installations, they are unpredictable for lack of visibility. An impression of rushing forward heads down right into a wall; possibly a reminder of daily life, where we keep moving without necessarily having a sense of direction.

Noraset's work, with its multiple facets and possible readings, appears to reflect accurately his personality – rich, complex and paradoxical. The screens, traps and other deceiving devices may be there to protect himself from revealing too much. Yet, there is an evident wish to communicate (as in "Dialogue" or "Sorry", for instance) although seldom or never directly. When he shows his living space and invites people into it, Noraset accumulates signs of his presence but avoids to be there...Is it because of his modest and reserved nature or because he has understood that the real power is elsewhere, backstage, behind the scene, behind the seen?

TIME AND CONTINUATION (2004, SUDSIRI PUI-OCK, A+++++)

I went to the exhibition TRACES OF SIAMESE SMILE last Sunday. It shows several videos which I saw already, but it also shows at least 17 videos which I didn’t see before. I enjoy watching them a lot, and spent three hours watching these 17 videos.

1.TIME AND CONTINUATION (2004, Sudsiri Pui-ock, A+++++++++++++++)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3072/2965894365_2968129f78_o.jpg

2.MEMORIAL PROJECT NHA TRANG, VIETNAM: TOWARDS THE COMPLEX – FOR THE COURAGEOUS, THE CURIOUS AND THE COWARDS (2001, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, A++++++++++)

3.SELF-PORTRAIT AS A THEATER (2002, Yasumasa Morimura, A++++++++++)

4.MANET’S LUNCHEON ON THE GRASS AND THAI VILLAGERS (2008, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, A++++++++++)
This 16-minute video is shown in the basement of the building.

5.YOGYA BINTANG HOUSE MINI (2008, Yoshitomo Nara + Graf, A+)
This animation is showed in a TV in a small house. The inside walls and the floor of this house are decorated by Nara’s drawings. I’m not sure what this animation is trying to say. Is a part of this animation is about child prostitution?

6.BALANCE OF TERROR (2007, Sakarin Krue-on, A+)
The screen which shows this video is situated behind a small oil well. The viewers must be very careful so that they don’t fall into the oil well. I’m not sure if this video is about terrorism or not.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3289/2965894347_b9e3e23885_o.jpg

7.SEA PUNISHING (2005, Marina Abramovic, A+)
This video is shown in two screens, but the two screens are on the two sides of the same wall. So the viewers can’t watch the two screens at the same time. The viewers must choose to be on any one side of the wall at one time to watch one of the screens.

8.LUMINOUS PEOPLE (2007, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, A+)

9.THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME (2008, Shane Bunnag, A+)
I think this video is not very interesting. But what is interesting is the installation, because this video is shown on the testicles of a big child sculpture called BETTER THAN EVER: PIKABOO! HEARD YOU ARE DESPERATELY SEEKING A LEADER AROUND HERE (2008, Chatchai Puipia)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3058/2965894353_31f69220c0_o.jpg

10.THE BOXER (2008, Mette Tronvoll, A+)

11.MANGO GIRL (2008, Wisut Ponnimit, A+)
This is an animation video installation. The story in this video is the continuation from the story which is told by the drawings on the wall near the TV showing this video.

12.BANGKOK I (Peter Johansson + Kamol Phaosavasdi, A+)

13.GRACELAND (2008, Paolo Canavari, A+/A)

14.ORIGINAL THAVORN (2008, Thavorn Ko-udomvit, A)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3045/2965894359_b64c145f60_o.jpg

15.PRETTY AND BEAUTY (สวยนอก สวยใน) (2005, Amrit Chusuwan, A)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3009/2965894349_d9a1967f84_o.jpg

16.ADORATION (2006, Amanda Coogan, A/A-)

17.SITTING MAN (2007, Vasan Ruewklang, A/A-)
This video is inspired by the painting SEATED MAN (1974, Chakrabhand Posayakrit)
