NINETEENTH POLL: UNFAMILIAR PLACES

My nineteenth poll is inspired by my most favorite film of April 2008 – FINAL SOLUTION (2003, Rakesh Sharma). This film is about the genocide in Gujarat, India. I had rarely heard the name Gujarat before I saw this film. This documentary is very sad. One of the saddest stories told in this film is about a politician who tried to save many genocidal victims, but he couldn’t save them and he also was brutally killed.

Seeing the hate mandate in FINAL SOLUTION somehow makes me very afraid of what will happen in Thailand. Some recent news in Thailand makes me very afraid of some narrow-minded Thai people who can’t accept other people who are ‘different’. These Thai people even tried to spread the hatred and urged other people to cause violence.

This is the news which makes me very afraid of living in Thailand:

CHOTISAK NO SHOW AT FORUM DUE TO THREATS FROM MANAGER RADIO

You can read the news here:
http://www.prachatai.com/english/news.php?id=623

This is a quote from the news:

“The organizers, including the Santi Pracha Dharma Institute and Fah Diew Kan (Same Sky) magazine, started the forum with an audio clip recorded from a radio programme ‘Metro Life’ which belongs to the Manager Group, the driving force of the anti-Thaksin, royalist People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD). The radio programme was broadcast on the night of April 30 at FM 97.75, or Manager Radio, during which the hosts incited listeners to come to the forum to attack Chotisak and disrupt the event.

(Note: since the evening of May 2, the audio files of the programme for April 29 and 30 have been removed from www.managerradio.com, but can be downloaded here (29) and here (30).)

The organizers therefore informed participants that Chotisak would not join the panel at the forum for safety reasons.”

--I love FINAL SOLUTION very much, and want to create a poll which can include this film. One of the interesting things in this film is that it allows me to have a glimpse into Gujarat, a place where I had no knowledge about. This fact inspires me to make a list of my favorite films which let me explore unfamiliar places.

HUNTING THE LION WITH BOW AND ARROW (1965, Jean Rouch, Mali/Niger)ก็เลยอยากขอความรู้หน่อยน่ะครับ

HUNTING THE LION WITH BOW AND ARROW

THE CINEMATIC GRIOT: THE ETHNOGRAPHY OF JEAN ROUCH

http://www.filmlinc.com/fcm/5-6-2005/rouch.htm

http://www.der.org/jean-rouch

HUNTING THE LION WITH BOW AND ARROW
http://www.der.org/films/lion-hunters.html

" Footage for this film was collected over a seven year period during the 1950s and 1960s, among the Fulani herdsmen and Songhay villagers in the Savannah of northern Niger and Mali. The Songhay call this region "the bush which is farther than far the land of nowhere."

The Songhay were the dominant people of a formerly powerful kingdom, destroyed in the sixteenth century, that stretched along the Niger River from the edge of the Sahara to the rain forests in the south. The Songhay today are millet-farmers and are still considered to own the land, on which Fulani herdsmen have rights of pastorage. Songhay also own the land's game, including lions.

Lion-hunting is reserved by tradition to the Gao, a group of Songhay-speaking professional hunters, masters of the techniques and rituals of poison-making. The Gao also possess great knowledge of the bush, and are thought to have a special relationship with the spirits that inhabit its trees and waters. When lions raid Fulani cattle, the Fulani must request that Songhay chiefs send Gao hunters to their aid. The Songhay chiefs are paid by the Fulani in cattle. The Gao receive the lion's skin, skull, and other parts, including the heart which can command up to $1000 in coastal cities where it is used in medicine and ritual.

Lions generally kill only sick or injured cattle, but on occasion they will attack a healthy herd. The Gao are usually able to determine which lion is responsible, for they know the characteristics and habits of individual animals. In the film, for example, the hunters attempt to find "The American," so called because of its strength and cleverness. although lion-hunting is a test of manly courage, the Gao sing the praises not only of the hunters but also the hunted, following a kill. Once trapped and shot with poison arrows, the lion is commanded to die quickly, and to forgive the hunters. Its body is struck three times to liberate the animal's soul, so that it will not drive the hunters mad.

The film follows not only several hunts, including one in which an inexperienced Fulani is seriously wounded by a cornered lion, but also the technology of the hunt. Bows are cut from forest trees, metal arrow points are forged, and poison is made from the seeds of the "poison tree." This tree, also called the "mother of magic," is found in the bush some 300 miles south of the Gao homeland. Every four years the Gao hunters travel to this area, where they prepare the poison within a "magic circle." The seeds are boiled in water while spells are recited. Upon return to Gao country, traps are set with perfume bottles buried under piles of pebbles, for lions, the Gao explain, are like girls, adoring perfume.

The relationships between the Gao, other Songhay-speakers, and the Fulani herdsmen are intriguing. Perhaps, as Rouch suggests, the Gao serve as mediators between an ancient hunting way of life, with its spirits of the bush, and the life and gods of pastoralism and settled agriculture. One may also speculate on the economic, social, and political relationships that are sustained or even created through the lion hunt."

HUNTING THE LION WITH BOW AND ARROW
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2006/11/cruel-nature.html

HUNTING THE LION WITH BOW AND ARROWS

Chronicle of a Summer

The Lion Hunters (1965)

ผลงานภาพยนตร์ของรูชรวมถึง Le Reve plus fort que la mort (2003), Madame L'Eau (1993), The Sons of Water (1958), Mammy Water (1953), Rainmakers (1951), Baby Ghana (1957), The Punishment (1962), That Tender Age (1964), Six in Paris (1965), Jackville (1965), Alpha noir (1965) และ Little by Little (1971)

I voted for all four of the films you propose that I've been able to see, as I like all four. Probably CALENDAR is my very favorite however. Though of course LAND WITHOUT BREAD is a marvelous and important classic, and I am very impressed by UNKNOWN PLEASURES and HORSE THIEF as well.

I don't think I've even heard of the others on the list, except for the Rouch and THE TIN MINE. I missed the latter when it played somewhat (though not very) near me a couple years ago. Should I make a strong effort to seek it out on DVD?

celinejulie said...

Thank you very much for your vote, Brian.

--As for THE TIN MINE, I think it is not a must-see film. I like this film a lot, but I’m not sure if it is really worth a “strong” effort to seek it out. I recommend this film, but only in the case that it is easy to find its DVD.

Compared to most mainstream Thai films, I like THE TIN MINE very much. That’s not to say that THE TIN MINE is excellent. It means that THE TIN MINE is not as emotionally manipulative as most Thai films. I like the “rhythm of life” in THE TIN MINE. It seems as if the film lets the uneven, uneventful, unsmooth, inharmonious rhythm of life control the rhythm of the film, while other Thai films lets the rules of three act or the rules of climax control the rhythm of the film. One Thai critic from Bioscope magazine made an interesting observation that THE TIN MINE is a film in four acts, not in standard three acts.

I much prefer THE TIN MINE to MEHKHONG FULL MOON PARTY (2002, Jira Maligool, A-). In my personal opinion, MEHKHONG FULL MOON PARTY is too emotionally manipulative, or it tries to manipulate me to feel something I hate. It’s a kind of feel-good film which makes me feel bad instead. Fortunately, the thing I don’t like in MEHKHONG FULL MOON PARTY is not to be found in THE TIN MINE.

One of the interesting things about THE TIN MINE is that some people seem to hate this film very much, but they like MEHKHONG FULL MOON PARTY. Fortunately, many of my friends share the same opinion with me—we love THE TIN MINE. I think THE TIN MINE is a kind of film which I want to promote because it is undeservedly attacked by some people. I want to shout to the world that I love THE TIN MINE, not because I think THE TIN MINE is one of the best Thai films of all time, but just because some people hate it.

--I’m very sorry about what happened to your blog (the disappearance of old information), but I’m glad that you continue blogging as usual. :-)

LITTLE BY LITTLE (1971, Jean Rouch)

1.THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE (1973, Jean Eustache, 210 min, A+)

2.LES HAUTES SOLITUDES (1974, Philippe Garrel, 80 min

3.A GIRL IS A GUN (1971, Luc Moullet)

4.OUT 1: NOLI ME TANGERE (1971, Jacques Rivette, 13 hours)

Thanks for the words on THE TIN MINE, celinejulie. I disliked the emotional manipulation of MEKHONG FULL MOON PARTY too. What I liked about the film were the documentary-esque elements in its depiction of the Nong Khai festival. But they were overshadowed by the manipulative elements. Too bad; I really wanted to like the film going in.

My archives have been restored and can be found here. I'm slowly but surely porting over my favorite pieces back to my "real" domain.

Brian, it’s very great to see that your archives have been restored. :-)

I feel the same as you about The Tin Mine - I really enjoyed it, and it's very well made, but it's not aa classic. I was surprised by the amount of negative reviews it received when it was released.

celinejulie said...

I’m glad you like THE TIN MINE. Another thing I like in THE TIN MINE is that it is one of very few vocation-oriented Thai films which are really serious about the vocations depicted. I think most Thai films or most Thai TV dramas are not serious about the professions of the characters. This is the opposite of Japanese films or TV series. Even some US TV melodramas, such as MELROSE PLACE, pay more attention to the problems in the careers of the characters more than Thai dramatic films.

I just saw FIRST FLIGHT (2008, Tanit Jitnukul, A-/B+) in January, and think it is a little bit funny that the film shows the training of these Thai pilots for only 5-10 minutes. I think the film might have improved if it was more serious about the vocation. However, a critic (http://konmongnang.exteen.com ) points out that the film still has some good points, especially the depiction of the democratization of Thailand during that era by having “a proletariat” as the film’s main character.

As for vocation-oriented or sports-oriented films, I think the opposites of THE TIN MINE include films such as CHEERLEADER QUEENS (2003, Poj Arnon, B-) and MATCH POINT (2005, Thanapon Thanangkul, B-). These two films should have paid more attention to the struggle of the cheerleaders or the volleyball players, respectively, in the films.
