PLOTLESSNESS : no obvious (forefront) drama, no beginning, no denouement, open-ending, no drive to go forward, no major narrative gimmicks (flashback, multilayered stories), simplicity, atmospherical depiction, distanciation of protagonist(s) with background action, no imminent threat, no external forces pressuring the protagonist(s).

WORDLESSNESS : laconical interactions (or silent protagonist), no plot-drive expository filling, no psychological arguments, no voiceover, direct-sound (no score), body language.

SLOWNESS : long takes, static shots/slow camerawork, patient pace, uneventfulness (down time), "unnecessary" mundanity, uncut movements, activities filmed in their entirety, extended wait/pauses, conscience of time.

ALIENATION : disconnectedness, wandering/idleness/listlessness, solitude, fatalism, ennui/melancholy/depression, non-comformity, no intellectualized existentialism, distanciation of protagonist(s) with the world, with other characters, emptyness, empty frames, distanciation of the camera from the subject.

Thank you for the mention. :)
I can't read Thai, but I'm assuming you recommend this film, Afternoon Time, for the Contemplative Cinema profile. (I couldn't find it on IMDb...)

Answer for harrytuttle

Yes, I think AFTERNOON TIME might fit into the category of CONTEMPLATIVE CINEMA. If you are interested in seeing this film, you might contact TOSSAPOL BOONSINSUKH, the director of this film, at pok_office@yahoo.co.uk

(The information below is copied from an e-mail I sent to someone a few months ago)

As far as I know, I think AFTERNOON TIME hasn’t been screened outside Thailand. It was publicly screened at least two times in Bangkok. It was publicly premiered in the Thai Short Film Festival in 2005, and it was shown again at DK FILMHOUSE in Thammasat University early in 2006 in the mini-retrospective of Tossapol Boonsinsukh. DK FILMSHOUSE is an arthouse theatre here in Bangkok.

AFTERNOON TIME is a kind of film that will inspire a lot of audience to walk out. Hahaha. The film is very slow, and technically very poor. The sound recording
in some scenes is so bad that you can’t hear what the characters are talking. But it doesn’t matter because you still understand the main story. Tossapol’s films are so much different from the films of many Thai amateur filmmakers. Many Thai amateur filmmakers make technically-perfect films, but I don’t get much emotion out of viewing it. I prefer Tossapol’s films which are technically poor, but full of emotions. Tossapol’s films also stand out from other Thai indie films because he is an auteur. He really has his own
style. Tossapol’s favorite director is Pen-ek Ratanaruang, but I like Tossapol’s films ten times more than Pen-ek’s films. Hahaha

AFTERNOON TIME, like other films by Tossapol, will divide the audience into the really-love-it and the really-hate-it groups, because his films convey some emotions which some audience cannot understand. In my own opinion, his films remind me of JUN ICHIKAWA’s
films, because both Tossapol and Jun Ichikawa made films about extremely lonely people, but what is important is that some characters in their films seem to be VERY HAPPY TO BE ALONE. That made their films stand apart of WONG KAR-WAI and TSAI MING-LIANG films, because although Wong and Tsai made films about lonely people, their characters seem to be very unhappy to be alone.

--I haven’t read your wonderful blog (unspoken cinema) completely, so I’m not sure if I understand the category right. Anyway, if you are interested in Thai ultra-slow films (thought they might not fit into the CONTEMPLATIVE CINEMA category), I have just made a list of TEN MOST ENCHANTING ULTRA-SLOW THAI FILMS (apart from AFTERNOON TIME), and the list goes like this:

Thanks for the helpful explanation. So Afternoon Time is a short film?
I don't know where and when I will be able to find these films, but I'm glad to have your list to look forward to. Invisible Waves is the only one that was screened in Paris (to my knowledge). It was very good (although I prefered The Last Life in The Universe personally).

SOMEWHERE OVER THE DREAMLAND (2002, CHENG WEN-TANG, B-)

A Scene at the Sea

A SCENE AT THE SEA (1991, A) มากๆเหมือนกันค่ะ ตอนดูรอบแรกชอบในระดับประมาณ A- แต่พอได้ดูรอบสองก็ชอบขึ้นมาก

A SCENE AT THE SEA

THE BIRTH OF LOVE (1993, A+++++)
