Classic Films seen in 2001:
1.The
Death of Maria Malibran (Werner Schroeter, 1972)
Who
is Maria Malibran? Don’t ask me. I learn nothing about the life or death of
Maria Malibran from this film. It needs no explanation. Just let your mind be
immersed in its infinite pool of dreams, nightmares, fantasies, fairytales and
imagination. This film makes me feel drunk, drowned, and delirious
simultaneously.
2.Ticket
of No Return (Bildnis einer Trinkerin) (Ulrike Ottinger, 1979)
Fans
of Pedro Almodovar, Nina Hagen, or Juliet of the Spirits (Federico
Fellini, 1965) must not miss this film. Bizarrely beautiful and hilarious. It
has one of the most memorable costumes, make-up, and supporting characters.
3.The
Last Hole (Das letzte Loch) (Herbert Achternbusch, 1981)
4.Pierrot
le Fou (Jean-Luc Godard, 1965)
5.
Ludwig’s Cook (Theodor Hirneis oder wie man ein ehemaliger Hofkock wird)
(Hans Jurgen Syberberg, 1973)
Honourable
Mention:
The
Power of Emotion
(Alexander Kluge, 1983)
I
had never imagined one could make a film like this.
Some
films also deserve special recognition:
Favourite
Director: Herbert Achternbusch for The Andechs Feeling (1974), The
Last Hole (1981), She’s an Olympic Winner (1983), and Heal Hitler

Re-run Films on Big Screen:
These
are films that I saw on a big screen BOTH before and during 2001.
1.Haut
bas fragile (Jacques Rivette, 1995)
My
second favourite musical film of all time, if you can call this film a musical.
The first place still belongs to All That Jazz (Bob Fosse, 1979). Recent
French musicals, including Jeanne et le garcon formidable (Olivier
Ducastel, Jacques Martineau, 1998) and On connait la chanson (Alain
Resnais, 1997), have strong effects on my feelings and emotions, unlike other
musical films which are only visually dazzling.
2.Agatha
et les lectures illimitees (Marguerite Duras, 1981)
3.Les
Creatures (Agnes Varda, 1966)
4.Katz
und Maus (Hans Jurgen Pohland, 1967)
5.La
Naissance de l’amour (Philippe Garrel, 1993)
Favourite
Films seen on TV or Video:
1.Shirley
Valentine (Lewis Gilbert, 1989)
Is
this what’s called a feel-good movie? Because it really makes me feel so good.
For those who love Muriel’s Wedding
(P.J. Hogan, 1994) and Miss Firecracker (Thomas Schlamme, 1989).
2.The
Love Letter (Peter Ho-Sun Chan, 1999)
3.Trash
(Paul Morrissey, 1970)
4.Humanity
(Bruno Dumont, 1999)
5.Idioterne
(Lars von Trier, 1998)
6.Lola
+ Bilidikid (Kutlug Ataman, 1998)
My
favourite scenes are when a child finds ‘the Mermaid’, and when Murat (Baki
Davrak) munches his hamburger in toilet.
7.Love
Letter (Shunji Iwai, 1995)
8.Tick
Tock (Kevin Tenney, 2000)
A
thriller film which uses the clock as effectively as Petits arrangements avec les morts
(Pascale Ferran, 1994)!?!, though with very different purposes.
9.The
Longest Nite (Patrick Yau, 1997)
10.The
Sanguinaires (Laurent Cantet, 1998)
Favourite
Music Video: Another Chance, performed by Roger Sanchez
This
video is for those who think meeting someone as good as Mr.Darcy (Colin Firth)
cannot ever happen in their lives.
