“I had a difficult reaction to it, and it’s fairly obvious, because my situation was like yours. I had the utmost respect for Bresson, but this one, my God…I had no idea what it was about. It seemed wrong. Because it was 1977, and I was into punk rock, and the energy around me was so far away from anything this film depicted. It was all about stuff we were rejecting, which we did not want to deal with anymore, it was the old world. When I looked at the film again away from that context, five or 10 years later, I realized that it was the best depiction of what the Seventies were about. To anybody who was in France at that time it’s obvious, and it’s extraordinary that it was an old man who cracked it. When I saw the film again, it just struck me so cruelly that what I was rejecting was not the movie, it was myself, the person I had been at the time. Because the characters in the film, specifically the central character, are really the closest to whatever I was at that age that I’ve seen in a film. But at the time I did not want to see that! In the end, it must be one of my favorite films of all time.”

In the Slovenian Film Series, I saw only SPARE PARTS (2003, Damjan Kozole) and recommend it. It deals with the illegal immigration issue in an unsentimental way. I much prefer it to films like DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (2002, Stephen Frears). I think SPARE PARTS may make a good unintentional trilogy with THE PROMISE (1996, Jean Pierre + Luc Dardenne) and ONCE YOU’RE BORN YOU CAN NO LONGER HIDE (2005, Marco Tullio Giordana), which also deal with the same issue, but from different perspectives.

--ได้เข้าไปฟังวง VOLCANO THE BEAR แล้วค่ะ แบบว่าพลีกรรม ตรียัมปวายมากๆ ชอบมากๆเลยค่ะ ขลังและอาถรรพ์มากๆ ขอบคุณมากค่ะที่แนะนำวงนี้ให้ได้รู้จัก

พูดถึงเพลงเฮี้ยนๆแล้ว ก็เลยนึกถึงวง ZOMBIE ZOMBIE จำไม่ได้ว่าคุณ pc เคยเขียนแนะนำวงนี้ไปแล้วยัง แต่วงนี้ก็ทำเพลงแนวหนังผีได้สนุกสนานมากๆ

--พูดถึงการอัดรายการวิทยุแล้ว ก็เลยนึกถึงกิจกรรมของตัวเองในตอนนี้ ซึ่งก็คือการทยอยเอาเทปเก่าๆที่อัดรายการวิทยุเมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน โยนทิ้งไป เพราะตอนนี้อพาร์ทเมนท์ของดิฉันแทบไม่มีที่ว่างเหลืออยู่แล้ว ก็เลยตัดสินใจเอาเทปเก่าๆที่อัดรายการวิทยุของ DJ POP กับเพลงญี่ปุ่นของ DJ EDDY และเพลงของดีเจคนอื่นๆบางคนมาฟังเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย ก่อนจะโยนทิ้งไป รู้สึกเสียดายอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่ก็ต้องจำใจทำ ไม่งั้นก็คงไม่มีที่ว่างเหลือไว้สำหรับเก็บนิตยสาร I AM GUY, REAL, VZMEN, STEPS, NEED, SHAKE ที่ทยอยซื้อเข้าห้องมาเรื่อยๆ

ยังไม่เคยดู JOSEF KILIAN (1963, Pavel Juracek, Jan Schmidt) เลยค่ะ แต่มั่นใจว่าหนังต้องน่าดูมากๆแน่ๆ เคยดูหนังของ Pavel Juracek เรื่องเดียว ซึ่งก็คือเรื่อง CASE FOR A ROOKIE HANGMAN (1970, A++++++++++) ที่เคยมาฉายใน World Film Festival of Bangkok จำได้ว่าคุณ FILMSICK ก็ได้ดูหนังเรื่องนี้ด้วย เป็นหนังที่เฮี้ยนสุดๆ นึกว่า ALICE IN WONDERLAND + GULLIVER’S TRAVELS + FRANZ KAFKA ดูแล้วก็ไม่เข้าใจเหมือนกันว่าหนังสื่อถึงความหมายทางการเมืองในช่วงนั้นอย่างไรบ้าง แต่ก็เป็นหนังที่สนุกมากๆ

ดีใจมากค่ะที่เขียนถึงหนังเรื่องนี้ เพราะชอบหนังอีกเรื่องของ PAUL GOLDMAN (ผู้กำกับ SUBURBAN MAYHEM) มากๆ หนังเรื่องนั้นคือ AUSTRALIAN RULES (2001, A+) เห็นบางคนใน SENSES OF CINEMA ยกให้ AUSTRALIAN RULES ติดอันดับหนังประจำปีด้วย

ท่าทาง PAUL GOLDMAN จะน่าสนใจจริงๆ ส่วนใน AUSTRALIAN RULES นั้น สิ่งที่ชอบมากๆก็คือ

1.หนังเรื่องนี้มีฉากพ่อซ้อมลูกชายอันหล่อเหลาที่ให้อารมณ์รุนแรงมากๆ

2.หนังเรื่องนี้นำเสนอประเด็นที่ค่อนข้าง CONTROVERSIAL เพราะหนังเรื่องนี้พูดถึงชาวอะบอริจินส์ที่หันมาเป็นอาชญากร เราไม่ค่อยรู้เรื่องพวกนี้มากนัก แต่เราเข้าใจว่าในสังคมออสเตรเลียหรือในบางสังคมนั้น การสร้างภาพยนตร์ที่นำเสนอ “ชนกลุ่มน้อย” ว่าเป็นอาชญากรอาจจะถือว่าเป็นสิ่งที่ POLITICALLY INCORRECT อย่างไรก็ดี AUSTRALIAN RULES สร้างจากเรื่องจริง และมาจากคดีอาชญากรรมที่ชาวอะบอริจินส์เป็นคนก่อจริงๆ

เราได้ดู AUSTRALIAN RULES แล้ว และเราก็ไม่คิดว่าหนังเรื่องนี้มีอคติต่อชาวอะบอริจินส์เลยแม้แต่น้อย เราคิดว่าหนังเรื่องนี้ “เห็นใจ” ชาวอะบอริจินส์อย่างมากๆๆๆๆ และแนะนำว่านี่เป็นหนึ่งในหนังดราม่าชีวิตเข้มข้นที่ทำได้ถึงใจมากๆ

AUSTRALIAN RULES นำเสนอเรื่องราวของอคติในเมืองเล็กๆ และมีทั้งประเด็นปัญหาสังคม, ปัญหาเชื้อชาติ และปัญหาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างคนในครอบครัว หนังเรื่องนี้ดีในระดับมากกว่าหรือเท่ากับหนังสะท้อนสังคมชั้นดีของออสเตรเลียอีกหลายเรื่อง เราว่าดีพอๆกับ SOMERSAULT (A+) และดีกว่า CANDY (A-) แต่อาจจะยังไปไม่ถึงขั้นหนังดราม่าระดับเทพของออสเตรเลียที่กำกับโดย PAUL COX หรือ ROLF DE HEER

หนังออสเตรเลียอีกเรื่องที่มีขายในแบบวีซีดีลิขสิทธิ์ และนำเสนอความสัมพันธ์อันร้าวฉานระหว่างพ่อกับลูกชายอย่างได้อารมณ์สุดๆ (ซึ่งรวมถึงอารมณ์...สุดๆเพราะลูกชายสองคนหล่อมาก) ก็คือเรื่อง SWIMMING UPSTREAM (2003, RUSSELL MULCAHY, A+)

ลืมหนังเรื่อง WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN ไปเลย เป็นหนังที่ชอบมากๆอีกเรื่อง ส่วน HURLYBURLY (1998, ANTHONY DRAZAN) นั้น ยังไม่ได้ดูเสียที

เพิ่งสังเกตเห็นว่า DAVID RABE เขียนบทหนังเรื่อง HURLYBURLY ดิฉันชอบ DAVID RABE มากๆค่ะ เพราะเขาเคยเขียนบทหนังเรื่อง STREAMERS (1983, ROBERT ALTMAN, A+), CASUALTIES OF WAR (1989, BRIAN DE PALMA, A+) และ THE FIRM (1993, SYDNEY POLLACK, A) และ STREAMERS กับ CASUALTIES OF WAR ก็อยู่ในกลุ่มหนังที่ดิฉันชอบที่สุดของ ALTMAN และ DE PALMA

ส่วนนึงที่ชอบมากในหนังเรื่อง WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN ก็คือความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพระเอกกับสาวใช้ชาวเอเชียในเรื่อง เพราะตอนแรกเรานึกว่าสองคนนี้จะมีอะไรกัน ปรากฏว่าทั้งสองคนนี้กลับไม่มีอะไรกัน ก็เลยชอบตรงจุดนี้มากๆ

I know about your blog from Renton_Renton’s blog.

I like this song very much. In fact, I like songs from the late 1980’s very much, because I was a late teenager at that time.

I remember that when my friends and I first heard this song, we misunderstood that the name of the band is “The Promise” and the name of the song is “When in Rome”. I think the name of this band is quite strange.

Something in this song also reminds me of the band GAZEBO.

I don’t have any albums of WHEN IN ROME. Thank you for letting me listen to this song again.

The photo of PRETTY IN PINK (1986, Howard Deutch) in your blog also reminds me of my teenage year. I like PRETTY IN PINK very much, though it seems to be a kind of formulaic story.
