I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES (2000, JEAN-MICHEL OTHONIEL, A+++++)

COLINR has left a comment on an interesting film about skinheads in filmbrain’s blog:
http://www.filmbrain.com/filmbrain/2007/04/tribeca_report_.html#comments

>>celinejulie, a good short film I've seen on the subject of racism and skinhead is Skin Deep (imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298154/ ), which focuses on a young, light skinned Pakistani man who falls in with a group of racist skinheads through encountering them at his garage job. It is quite interesting, with the tension between the culture of his family and of his friends and of hiding his heritage from his gang pushed to the limit when he is expected to join in with attacks on people. It has an amazing final image of the young man shaving his head in front of his bathroom mirror, less as an acceptance of one side or the other but of his own rebellion against all the expectations everyone is forcing on him.<<

FILMS SEEN LATELY

1.LA BELLE CAPTIVE (1983, ALAIN ROBBE-GRILLET, A+)
(DVD)

2.WHO WISHES TO REPRESENT AN ANGEL, MAKES A BEAST (2007, CHRISTINE LAQUET, A+)

The title I wrote here is the title of the exhibition by Laquet at Bangkok University Gallery (BUG). In this exhibition, there is a video installation, but I don’t know if this video installation has a name of its own or not. So I use the name of this exhibition, which is comprised of many things, as the name of the video in the exhibition.

3.PROTEGE (2007, Derek Yee, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0841150/

4.NIGHT TIME PICNIC (2006, Masahiko Nagasawa, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0498605/

5.THE HOUSE OF WOOL (1998, FREDERIC OLLEREAU, A)
This video installation is a part of the METISSAGES exhibition at The James H.W. Thompson Foundation.

2.WHO WISHES TO REPRESENT AN ANGEL, MAKES A BEAST
( CHRISTINE LAQUET, A+)
An exhibition at the Bangkok University Gallery

3.WEAPONS OF ASSASSINATION EXHIBITION (XIA JING, A+)

This exhibition is held at TANG CONTEMPORARY ART in Silom Galleria. For more information, please read:
http://www.onopen.com/2007/editor-spaces/1731

4.THE ISLAND OF SLAVES (Kriengsak Silakong, A)

This is a likay (a Thai traditional stage play) which is adapted from a play by Pierre Carlet de Chamblain de Marivaux.

5.TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN (Tawee Ratchaneekorn, A)

This exhibition of paintings is held at Number One Gallery in Silom Galleria. For more information, please look at:
http://www.number1gallery.com/new-art-gallery/thawee/index.html

My most favorite painting in this exhibition is INDIFFERENCE, which shows various crimes happening in the same apartment at the same time. This painting reminds me of the film REAR WINDOW (1954, Alfred Hitchcock) and MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL (Wim Wenders, A-)

6.HUA HIN 2007 (A-)

An exhibition of Thai paintings about Hua Hin. The exhibition is held at Jamjuree Art Gallery. The painting that I like the most in this exhibition is WAVES by Sompech Wanchit

MY FEELINGS FOR WHAT I SAW:

I don't have enough time today to comment as much as I want to on what I saw. So I end up just making a list again.

The METISSAGES exhibition is great. It is an exhibition of textile art. I like many pieces of textiles in this exhibition.

MY MOST FAVORITE TEXTILES IN "METISSAGES"

1.I BELEIVE IN FAIRIES (2000, Jean-Michel Othoniel)

This piece of cloth reminds me of the movie BU SU (1987, Jun Ichikawa, A+), because the cloth is so plain, but it has the sentence "I BELIEVE IN FAIRIES" written on it. The size of the sentence is very small. If you don't look very closely, you will not be able to read the sentence. Somehow this piece of cloth makes me think about a plain-looking girl, who has some beauty inside, who is strong-willed, who is very determined, who is not a conformist, nor an aggressive rebel. This is the reason why this piece of cloth reminds me of the heroine in BU SU.

For more information about Othoniel, you can look at:

2.NURSERY'S CRIME (2006, Francoise Quardon)

This piece of textile art is frigteningly beautiful. It takes the shape of a colourful, glowing skull. Maybe this thing should be given as a freebie for the buyer of the DVD of THE SENTINEL (1992, Arnaud Desplechin, A).

3.TEARS SHED ON THE WORLD (2000, Skall)

This work of art somehow makes me feel sad, though it is colourful. If you ask me what movie would be fit for this thing, I might say any sad films such as AFTERSHOCKS (2002, Rakesh Sharma, A+), COME AND SEE (1985, Elem Klimov, A+), or DON'T CRY NANKING (1995, Wu Ziniu, A+)

4.PIOUS SOUVENIR, OR TRAMPLING OF THE CROSS (2000, Christine Lacroix)

This is so dark and so beautiful. It gives me the same feelings that I got when I saw SOMBRE (1998, Philippe Grandrieux, A+).

5.OF GRANITE AND SLATE (1992, Francoise Micoud)

This is a very plain-looking piece of textile. But somehow I was attracted by it. It reminds me of the works by AGNES MARTIN.

6.GLORY HOLES (1998, Jean-Michel Othoniel)

This piece of cloth reminds me of the movie LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE (1992, Alfonso Arau, A-), in which two people made love through a hole in a piece of cloth.

7.THE HAMMOCK (1999/2000, Marie Ange Guilleminot)

This piece of cloth reminds me of something looking like a jellyfish in the poster of TROPICAL MALADY. It looks otherworldly, fragile, and might be dangerous.

8.BIC EMISSAIRE (2000, Philippe Favier)

This piece of tapestry uses a strange way to represent a forest. It reminds me of a short film called LIGNE VERTE (2005, Laurent Mareschal, A), which presents an image of a forest in a strange way, too.

This is a picture from LIGNE VERTE:
http://www.axiprod.fr/filmcourt2005/IMG/jpg/Ligne_Verte3.jpg

BIC EMISSAIRE presents a symbol of a big company –BIC. This kind of technique reminds me of a short film called SPAR LOOP (2000, Gunilla Klingberg, Sweden), which uses logos from some small companies in the film.

For more information about Gunilla Klingberg, please read:
http://www.kunstverein-langenhagen.de/klingberg/index.html

9.A NEAR AND DISTANT MEMORY (1999, Carmen Perrin)

This piece of esoteric textile map should be given as a freebie with the DVD of A WALK THROUGH H: THE REINCARNATION OF AN ORNITHOLOGIST (1978, Peter Greenaway, A+).

10.FADING (2006, Anne-Lise Broyer + Nicolas Comment)

This work of art is an homage to the author Roger Vailland. It is an old radio decorated with some textile. It looks spooky. I feel as if you can hear something from the Twilight Zone from this radio. I think this piece of work should be given as a freebie with the DVD of ERASERHEAD.

11.AUTO-DAPHNE (2001, Jean-Luc Verna)

This piece of work presents an image of a Greek goddess. It looks magical. It reminds me of Jean Cocteau's films.

This is a photo of an artwork by Jean-Michel Othoniel.
