Favorite Quote from Lynne Cooke

Favorite Quote from Lynne Cooke

This is a copy of what I posted in Graiwoot's wall:

IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE, THE SOLE OBJECT OF ATTENTION SHOULD BE THE TREACHERY OF THE MOON WHEN AN OBJECT GETS SICK II

"Space is taken as a physical context rather than a neutral backdrop to the work, to the degree that installation involves guiding attention away from singular objects into complexes and relations structured within the viewing space itself. The recent recourse to this mode, first formulated in Dada and Surrealist work then regenerated by Fluxus and Conceptual artist, coincided with the reconceptualisation of notions of absence in post-structuralist theory so that rather than being conceived as mere nothingness, absence because a productive force seminal to discourse and psycholinguistics. Albeit in very different ways much of the work of Ann Hamilton, Susan Hiller, Tony Oursler, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Eulalia Valldosera and Heri Dono investigates or exploits these conceptualizations."

What Lynne Cooke wrote made me want to see the works of the artists mentioned here very much.

The photo is from FLYING ANGELS (Heri Dono).

I WORSHIP VIRIYAPORN BOONPRASERT

There are so many filmmakers I would like to worship in the Marathon Film Festival, including Viriyaporn Boonprasert, Amornsak Chatratin, Banyong Poolsup, Chompoonut Metha, Eakarach Gaewmahink, Eakarach Monwat, Fari Tesprateep, Manasak Khlongchainan, Napat Treepalawisetkun, Nattida Tohchoodee, Nasree Labaideemun, Prasit Suebjaksa, Setthasiri Chanjaradpong, Somjet Meeyen, Teera Prachumkong, Teeranit Siangsanoh, Theeraphat Ngathong, Teerapong Panyakam, Wachara Kanha, Waris Deepisut, etc.

DEVELOP BLESSING GIANT DHAMMA IN 3 WORLDS: GHOST OF CENTRALWORLD (Viriyaporn Boonprasert, 8 min, A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++) and DEVELOP BLESSING GIANT DHAMMA IN 3 WORLDS: I'M GONNA BE A NAIVE  (Viriyaporn Boonprasert, 24 min, A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++) reminds me of the power of Harun Farocki's films.

THE NERVOUS (Waris Deepisut, 104min, A+++++++++++++++)

THE NERVOUS (Waris Deepisut, 104min, A+++++++++++++++)

The film is full of plot holes, and the ending is not satisfactory, but I worship "the attempt" to make this film. I think this film is made in a high school in Trad Province.

WHY I LIKE SOME OLD THAI FILMS

This is a copy of what I wrote on a friend's Facebook wall, talking about why we're interested in old Thai films:

I share the same reasons as Graiwoot about why I'm interested in old Thai films. As for me, I think I'm interested in films in general, and old Thai cinema is just a part of them. It is just one of the uncharted territories for me. There are so many old Thai films which I still haven't seen but would like to see, such as THE HEART HAS FEET (หัวใจมีตีน) (1972), starring Pairoj Jaising as a male prostitute.

A group of old Thai films which I'm particularly drawn to are the melodramatic ones and the dramatic ones about lives of women. There seem to be many Thai films about women's lives in the 1970s and the 1980s, but there are very few contemporary Thai mainstream films about women's lives now. I like such films as LITTLE DUCK (เป็ดน้อย) (1968, Prince Panupan Yukol), INSANE (ประสาท) (1975, Piak Poster), LAST LOVE (ความรักครั้งสุดท้าย) (1975, Chatreechaloem Yukol), THE FOREST OF EROS (ป่ากามเทพ) (1976, Vijit Kunavudhi), CHARMLESS (ไร้เสน่หา) (1979, Chana Kraprayoon), DIVORCE BECAUSE OF ADULTERY (หย่าเพราะมีชู้) (1985, Manop Udomdej), I DON'T GIVE IT A DAMN (ช่างมันฉันไม่แคร์) (1986, M.L. Bhandevanop Devakul), WATER AND SAND (น้ำเซาะทราย) (1986, Chalee Intaravijit), RIVER OF NO RETURN (สายน้ำไม่ไหลกลับ) (1987, Banjong Kosalvat), DON'T SAY SHE IS A SINNER (อย่าบอกว่าเธอบาป) (1987, Tanit Jitnukul), and IT'S ME (คือฉัน) (1990, JazzSiam), partly because they don't make melodramatic Thai films like some of these anymore, and partly because it is easier for me to identify with the adult heroines in these old Thai films than the young heroines in Thai contemporary mainstream films now.

As for old Thai directors, I like Permpol Choei-aroon the most. I have seen four films of his, and it made me feel so unexplainably great. I think I share the same wavelength with him much more than other old Thai directors. I find films made by other old Thai directors very entertaining, especially Dokdin Gunyamarn and Rangsee Tasanapayak.

1.(..........) (Teeranit Siangsanoh, 34:32 min, A+30)
The first part of this film overwhelms me as much as RUHR (2009, James Benning, A+30). The first part of this film presents the moon in the dark sky in a very long take.

This scene unintentionally reminds me of my own childhood. I remember that when I was about 14 years old, one night I saw a beautiful moon in the dark sky, so I got out of my bed and went to the front yard of my house, and watched the moon for about 30 minutes at about 03.00am. I didn't know why I did something like that. I guess it is highly likely that I am LUNATIC. There was also a very funny thing happening at that time. I noticed that my neighbor stood at the window on the second floor of his/her house and watched me for a while. My neighbor must wonder what I did at the front yard at that time.

My own experience proves to me that Teeranit and I like to watch the same thing--the moon in the dark sky. There's something extremely magical about it.

INSIDE OF ME (2012, Nattaphan Boonlert, A+15)

INSIDE OF ME (2012, Nattaphan Boonlert, A+15)

และ A NEANGLY FAIRYTALE (BREAKDOWN: SIDE STORY) (2009, 21 min) จ้ะ

END OF PARALLEL (2012, Anan Rodprasert, A+)

END OF PARALLEL (2012, Anan Rodprasert, A+)

WANNAPORN SUENGHIRANYAPRUEG (2012, Maythus Suenghiranyaprueg, A+30)

Films seen on Saturday, June 16, 2012

1.WANNAPORN SUENGHIRANYAPRUEG (2012, Maythus Suenghiranyaprueg, A+30)

2.36 (2012, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, A+15)
I like this film in nearly the same way as I like AFTERNOON TIMES (2005, Tossapol Boonsinsukh). These two films are different, but there are a few things in both films which I like, for example,

2.1 These two films seem to portray the secret love/fondness that a woman has for a man, and both films do this job very well, because I feel very much involved with the heroines of both films.

2.2 The atmospheric quality of both films

2.3 The disappearance of the heroes in both films

2.4 The search for the hero in AFTERNOON TIMES/the search for the photo of the hero in 36

Another thing that I like very much in 36 is the obsession with digital photos and digital memory.

3.NOTHINGNESS (สุญญตา) (2012, Pattamon Sawasdi, 9 min, A+)
This film unintentionally makes me think that someone should remake JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES (1975, Chantal Akerman, 225 min). But in this remake version, the three days in the life of the heroine (Jeanne Dielman) should have nothing special happen. The second day and the third day in this imaginary film should be as ordinary as the first day in the film.

4.MIDNIGHT BLUE (2012, Teerapat Jaroenpakdee, 30 min, A+10)

5.TELEPHONE LIE (2012, Niwaruj Teekapowan, 23, min, A+10)
This film reminds me of NEW GENERATION (เด็กโจ๋) (2008, Pakwan Suksomthin, 16 min, A+30), because both films portray psychotic girls, which is the kind of characters that I like very much.

6.NEVER DIE? (2012, Suparirk Ningsanond, 21 min, A+)

7.I DON'T WANT TO BE A DIRECTOR (2012, Isaraporn Koontisook, 23 min, A)

3.SHUGENDO NOW (2010, Jean-Marc Abela + Mark Patrick McGuire, Japan/Canada, documentary, A+10)

4.SEMSHOOK (2010, Siddharth Anand Kumar, India, A)
The film partly suffers from the same problem found in such films as ALTIPLANO (2009, Peter Brosens + Jessica Woodworth, Belgium, A-/B+). The cinematography is too beautiful and too advertisement-like.

This is the year of South Korean films for me. Apart from COME, COME, COME UPWARD and SCARS, I also like CHEONGGYECHEON MEDLEY: A DREAM OF IRON (2010, Kyung Kun Park), DANCE TOWN (2010, Jeon Kyu-hwan), AN ESCALATOR IN WORLD ORDER (2011, Kim Kyung-man), PETTY MIDDLE MANAGER (1961, Lee Bongrae), REPATRIATION (2003, Kim Dong-wan), and THE SHOWER (1978, Ko Young-nam) very much.

THE YELLOW ROBE (1967, Lester James Peries, Sri Lanka, A++++++++++)

Films seen in the International Buddhist Film Festival 2012

1.THE YELLOW ROBE (1967, Lester James Peries, Sri Lanka, A++++++++++)
The story in this film is a little bit too moralistic for me.

2.UN BUDA (2005, Diego Rafecas, Argentina, A+++)
One of the things I like very much in this film is the question, "WHERE IS GOD WHEN MY PARENTS WERE KILLED BY THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP?

3.MATTHIEU RICARD, ON THE PATH TO COMPASSION (2012, Jeanne Mascolo de Filippis, France, documentary, A)
The film is nice, but several things portrayed in this film are not very interesting in my point of view. We all know that selflessness is good and selfishness is bad, so I think there's no point in promoting selflessness like in this film.

On the contrary, I just watched JOSEPH L'INSOUMIS (2011, Caroline Glorion, A+), which is about a Christian priest who devoted his life for the poor. I must admit that I much prefer JOSEPH L'INSOUMIS to MATTHIEU RICARD, ON THE PATH TO COMPASSION, partly because the world portrayed in JOSEPH L'INSOUMIS is full of evil, wretchedness, suffering, and controversy, while the world portrayed in MATTHIEU RICARD is much more peaceful. I'm not saying that JOSEPH L'INSOUMIS is a better film, but I think films about evil and suffering often interest me much more than films about virtue and happiness.
