FILM WISH LIST: FADE TO BLACK (1980, Vernon Zimmerman)

I like SCREAM TRIOGY very much, so I want to see FADE TO BLACK, because it is also about a serial killer and has many references to old films, such as DRACULA (1931, Tod Browning), THE MUMMY (1932, Karl Freund), KISS OF DEATH (1947, Henry Hathaway), WHITE HEAT (1949, Raoul Walsh), HOPALONG CASSIDY (1952-1954, TV series) and PSYCHO (1960, Alfred Hitchcock).

Vernon Zimmerman seems to be very interesting. I also want to see LEMON HEARTS (1961) by Zimmerman very much.

THE FLOWER THIEF (1960) by Ron Rice, and LEMON HEARTS (1961) by Vernon Zimmerman, are two of the latest and most successful examples of post-PULL MY DAISY cinema. Both are made with the utmost creative freedom, with the utmost disrespect for the "professional" camera, plot, character conventions. They merge and combine the spontaneous cinema of PULL MY DAISY, the freedom of the image of Brakhage, the "uncleanliness" of action painting, the theater of Happenings (Kaprow) and the sense of humor of Zen. Their imagination, coming from deeply "deranged" and liberated senses, is boundless. Nothing is forced in these films. THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY (2004, Ute Gebhardt, Russia, A+)

Maybe this documentary should be screened after STORM OVER ASIA (1928, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Soviet Union). If I remember it correctly, STORM OVER ASIA does not portray the Buddhist institutions in Mongolia positively. STORM OVER ASIA is a powerful film, and it is right to attack bad things in religious institutions. But somehow I feel the film is a little bit too biased.

There are many interesting things in THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY. One thing that I like very much is that the film talks about many Buddhists in Siberia who were massacred during the Stalin era. This massacre of the Buddhists somehow makes me think about the ideology presented in STORM OVER ASIA. I don't think that Vsevolod Pudovkin supported this massacre. But somehow an ideology in his film might be used in a wrong way or was used by an evil person, and led to bad things.

Watching these two films reminds me that both religions and communism are not good or bad things in themselves. What's important is how to use them or the persons who use them.

If a person doesn't try to "force" other people to believe in what he/she believes, or if a religious person doesn't try to "force" other people to be religious, or if a communist doesn't try to "force" other people to be communists, maybe the tragedy in THE MYSTERY OF THE SIBERIAN MUMMY wouldn't have occurred.

ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY (Tani Thitiprawat, 30 min, A++++++++++++++++)

What I like very much in this film includes:

1.I think this film is the right combination between home video, political film, and experimental film.

2.This film reveals the poetic side of Tani Thitiprawat, especially in the segment "THE STRONG FAMILIY" and the last segment of the film.

Tani belongs to a group of Thai filmmakers called THE UNDERGROUND OFFICE. I used to think that he might not be as poetically-inclined as the other two members of the group: Teeranit Siangsanoh, who makes extremely poetic films like Derek Jarman; and Wachara Kanha, who is inspired by Wong Kar-wai. But ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY shows that Tani can make poetic films, too.

Other films made by Tani, such as DISAPPEAR (2010, 26 min, A++++++++++), TO WALK NIGHT (2009, 25 min, A++++++++++), and HUNTER THE BAG (2009, 17 min, A+/A), reminds me of Quentin Tarantino, because these three films have crazy plots, and DISAPPEAR and TO WALK NIGHT combine many film genres together. So I'm surprised to find the tender, poetic side of Tani in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY.

3.The last part of the film is very touching and made me cry. In this part, we can hear the voiceover of a man reading a poem or something like that. A part of this poem is also featured in the film FUENG (2010, Teeranit, Wachara, Tani, 28 min), which is my most favorite film I saw in 2010. The poem is used more fully in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY.

If I remember it correctly, this poem talks about a man who tries to continue living, tries to continue to be alive, tries to reconcile with the hardship in life and move on.

In this scene, we can also see some footages of the political violence in Bangkok last year. Somehow the combination between the visual (footages of political violence) and the sound (voiceover reading the poem) in this scene yields a very powerful result.

4. In a way, Tani is breaking genre boundaries in this film again. His TO WALK NIGHT is "FUNNY GAMES meets TAXI DRIVER meets 28 DAYS LATER". His DISAPPEAR is "Alfred Hitchcock meets Quentin Tarantino meets Kiyoshi Kurosawa, etc."

In ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY, we see poetic home video. The segment THE STRONG FAMILY shows the life and atmosphere of a family. This segment can stand alone as a powerful film. But its power increases exponentially when it comes after the segment interviewing Khattiya Sawasdipol before he was killed last year.

There is no obvious connection between these two segments. But I like it very much that the segments are juxtaposed like this, because it represents "many parts" of a human being--a human being who loves both his family and politics.

If one makes a film which belongs to only one genre, that film risks representing only one side, or too few sides, of human beings.

The fact that ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY combine "political documentary" genre, "home video" genre, and "poetic experimental film" genre in one film is the reason why this film can present a human being much more fully.

5. Because the segments in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY are half-connected, half-unconnected, ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY becomes stranger or weirder than many Thai documentaries which deal with the families of the directors. However, the "unconnectedness" between the segments in ME AND MY VIDEO DIARY is not as strong as in Alexander Kluge's films.

DÉCHAÎNÉES (2008, Raymond Vouillamoz, Switzerland, A+++++)

SPOILERS ALERT

Things I like in this film include:

1.Adele Haenel, who also gives a wonderful performance in WATER LILIES (2007, Céline Sciamma, A+) and THE DEVILS (2002, Christophe Ruggia, A++++++++++).

2. The abortion topic. The film presents this topic in a very interesting way. The heroine, who is 19-year-old, is 4-week pregnant. Her nice boyfriend, who is studying for a Master's Degree, loves her very much and decides that he will marry her and they will raise the child together. But after the heroine sees a woman who is busy trying to control her own children, she decides to have an abortion.

That's what makes me worship this film. While many films choose to end with the birth of a child or the pregnancy of the heroine, or present the image of a woman happily raising her own children, "the image of a woman raising her own children" here is the real cause that makes the heroine decides to have an abortion. The "happy ending" of this film is the opposite of the happy endings of many films that I saw.

I think this film should be screened together with GOD'S OFFICES (2008, Claire Simon, A+++++) and LE PROCÈS DE BOBIGNY (2006, François Luciani, A+++++), starring Sandrine Bonnaire and Anouk Grinberg, which also talk about abortion issues in an interesting way.

THE UNBORN CHILD (SOP DEK 2002) (2011, Arnont Mingkwanta + James Thanadol, Thailand, B+) also talks about the abortion issue, though it may present very different opinions on this topic from DÉCHAÎNÉES, GOD'S OFFICES, and LE PROCÈS DE BOBIGNY.

3. DÉCHAÎNÉES also talks about film preservation and vinegar syndrome. This is the topic which is a huge problem in Thailand, too. Many old Thai films are lost forever because there is not enough film preservation. This topic also reminds me of the film MANÔ (2005, Georges Felner, Portugal, A+++++).

4.The character played by Irène Jacob in this film is interesting. She is not happy to see her daughter getting married with a nice husband, because she wants her daughter to have sex with many many men first, or have a lot of sexual experiences, before getting married.

GOOD NEWS FOR TODAY

1. The program Big Cinema on Channel 7 will soon air EYES DO NOT WANT TO CLOSE AT ALL TIMES, OR, PERHAPS ONE DAY ROME WILL ALLOW HERSELF TO CHOOSE IN HER TURN (1970, Jean-Marie Straub + Danièle Huillet)

2.The DVDs of OUT 1 (1971, Jacques Rivette, 12 hours 53 min) will be widely released in Thailand. You can buy them at 7-Eleven's stores near you.

3. James Cameron will produce a 3-D film about the apocalypse, titled LIGHTS TOTALLY OUT, directed by Philippe Grandrieux.

4. Manop Udomdej will direct a Thai version of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978, Meir Zarchi), starring Pichet Gonggarn, Peerawat Herabut, Akapan Namart, and Chaiwat Thongsang as the rapists. Chuntana Kittiyapun will star as the rape victim.

5. A new Thai film is secretly in production. The names of the crew and the film cannot be revealed at the moment. The only available information is that the film is inspired by many sources, including the comic books CRYSTAL DRAGON, BLUE SONNET; the TV series SUKEBAN DEKA 2, PLOENG PAI; the films BREMEN FREEDOM (1972, Rainer Werner Fassbinder), CÉLINE AND JULIE GO BOATING (1974, Jacques Rivette), MUANG NAI MORK (1978, Permpol Choei-aroon), THE SLEEP OF REASON (1984, Ula Stöckl), SWORDSMAN II (1991, Ching Siu-tung), and the character Sailor Saturn from SAILOR MOON TV series.

6. Nadech Kugimiya will star in a new film directed by Poj Arnon, which is a remake of BEAU TRAVAIL (1999, Claire Denis).

7. The new film of Lav Diaz will be 12-hours-and-7-minutes long, and it is loosely adapted from 127 HOURS (2010, Danny Boyle). The suffering of the character is guaranteed to be felt by the audience in this version.

8. Sununta Naksompop will remake WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (1988, Pedro Almodóvar), starring Sununta, Duangdoen Jithaisong, Nisaluck Srinakarn, and Neeranuch Atiporn.

9. REQUIEM FOR THE VIRGIN PAINTING is a new Thai film about the secret love of a gay nobleman in the past. The film is inspired by four sources: BEHIND THE PAINTING (2001, Cherd Songsri), EDWARD II (1991, Derek Jarman), LUDWIG (1972, Luchino Visconti), and LUDWIG – REQUIEM FOR A VIRGIN KING (1972, Hans Jürgen Syberberg).

10.Jirayu La-ongmanee will star in a new film by GTH. Suchada E-aim (สุชาดา อีเอม) will star as his lover in this remake of HAROLD AND MAUDE (1971, Hal Ashby).

11. After SHUTTER (2004, Banjong Pisanthanakun + Parkpoom Wongpoom), Hollywood will remake another Thai film – BIRTH OF THE SEANEMA (2004, Sasithorn Ariyavicha).

12. L'AVVENTURA (1960, Michelangelo Antonioni) will be remade by a Thai filmmaker. The story in this version will concern a group of bourgeois people who go on living their lives after their friends disappeared "without any explainable reasons" in May 2010.

13. A JUDGEMENT IN GOLDEN SAND HOUSE is a new Thai film adapted from two sources: the novel GOLDEN SAND HOUSE written by G. Surangkanang in 1950, and the film LA CÉRÉMONIE (1995, Claude Chabrol).

แล้วพอมาดู LIGHTS OUT (2010, Fabrice Gobert, A+) เราก็ไม่แน่ใจเหมือนกันว่าทำไมต้องเจาะจงให้เนื้อเรื่องเกิดขึ้นในปี 1992 ด้วย เราก็เลยเดาเล่นๆว่า หรือว่าเป็นเพราะการแพร่ระบาดของ "โทรศัพท์มือถือ" และ "อินเทอร์เน็ต" ทำให้การเขียนบทหนังฆาตกรโรคจิตยากขึ้นมาหน่อยนึงหรือเปล่า เพราะถ้าหากตัวละครแต่ละตัวมีโทรศัพท์มือถือติดตัว การตามหาคนที่หายสาบสูญไปในเรื่อง คงจะทำได้ง่ายขึ้นมาก เพราะฉะนั้นการเขียนบทหนังฆาตกรโรคจิต แล้วเจาะจงให้เนื้อเรื่องเกิดขึ้นก่อนยุคโทรศัพท์มือถือแพร่ระบาด อาจจะทำให้ตัวละครตกอยู่ในสถานการณ์อันตรายหรือสถานการณ์ลึกลับได้ง่ายขึ้น

LIVING WITH THE TIGER

LIVING WITH THE TIGER (2011, Mike Thomas, documentary) will be shown at Patravadi Theatre for free this Thursday, but you have to book the ticket in advance. I think this film might be an unintentional sequel to HEAVEN'S MEADOW (2005, Detlev F. Neufert, A+), which also talks about the same subject (AIDS patients at Baan Gerda). One main difference between these two films is that the main boy in LIVING WITH THE TIGER is older than the main boy in HEAVEN'S MEADOW. I wonder if they are the same boy.

Siegfried Kracauer wrote about the Fridericus Film Series in his book: FROM CALIGARI TO HITLER: A PSYCHOLOGICAL HISTORY OF THE GERMAN FILM (1947). Here is an excerpt from the book:

“The whole series was a thorough attempt to familiarize the masses with the idea of a Fuehrer. None other than Voltaire is called upon to recommend him. When in TRENCK, Frederick advocates sovereignty of the law, Voltaire replies that good sovereigns are preferable to good laws—enlightened reason paying homage to the absolute ruler. The King justifies this flattering opinion by playing, as before, the part of the people’s father. His patriarchal regime is a mixture of old-Prussian feudalism and Nazi sham socialism. He promises oppressed farmers to punish the Governor of their province for partially favoring the big-estate owner (TRENCK); he cancels all victory celebrations, urging that the money provided for them be given to the war victims (KING’S DANCER); he thinks of allotting funds for cultural purposes on the eve of a decisive battle (ANTHEM OF LEUTHEN). Everybody will have to admit that the security Frederick’s subjects enjoy is inaccessible to the citizens of a democracy, for in his protective zeal the King generously helps lovers (KING’S DANCER) and even goes so far as to prevent the wife of an absent major from committing adultery (FLUTE CONCERT). I can't remember many details in ONCE UPON A TOMORROW, but I remember that I like Michael Lonsdale in this film very much.

I just learned that Michael Lonsdale just won César Award for the first time from OF GODS AND MEN (2010, Xavier Beauvois), though he is about 80 years old now. He should have won an award long time ago. I like his films very much, including INDIA SONG (1975, Marguerite Duras), THE BRIDE WORE BLACK (1968, François Truffaut), STAVISKY (1974, Alain Resnais), THE DEVIL IN THE BOX (1977, Pierre Lary), and THE LEFT-HANDED WOMAN (1978, Peter Handke). Unfortunately, his roles may be too small in many films, so I can't remember him in many films that I saw.

เพิ่งสังเกตว่าฝรั่งเศสมีการผลิตหนังที่ฉายทางโทรทัศน์/มินิซีรีส์หลายเรื่องเกี่ยวกับตำรวจหญิง เราก็เลยไม่แน่ใจว่าเป็นเพราะผู้ชมทีวีส่วนใหญ่เป็นผู้หญิงหรือเปล่า ก็เลยมีมินิซีรีส์ดีๆเกี่ยวกับตำรวจหญิงออกมาเยอะมาก ในขณะที่หนังโรงส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นเรื่องของตำรวจชาย

นางเอกเป็นตำรวจหญิงที่ถูกลอบสังหารและเพื่อนร่วมงานถูกฆ่าตาย เธอก็เลยย้ายอาชีพไปทำงานเป็นพัศดีในคุก และเจอกับนักโทษหลากหลายรูปแบบ นับตั้งแต่กลุ่มสาวคลั่งศาสนาที่จับคนมาตรึงกางเขนและเผาคนทั้งเป็น, ยายแก่ที่เชี่ยวชาญการวางยาพิษ, คุณหมอหญิงที่ชอบหลอกคนไข้ว่าต้องผ่าตัดจนคนไข้ต้องตายไป, หญิงสาวที่เป็นโรคจิตเภทและจินตนาการว่าตัวเองมีเพื่อนร่วมห้อง และฝาแฝดที่ปลอมตัวมารับโทษในคุกแทนกัน

เกิดการฆาตกรรมต่อเนื่องขึ้นในเมืองเล็กๆเมืองหนึ่ง ตำรวจสาวก็เลยต้องสืบว่าใครคือฆาตกร นำแสดงโดย Stéphane Audran ซึ่งชอบอาศัยอยู่ในเมืองที่เกิดเหตุฆาตกรรม ไม่ว่าจะใน LES BONNES FEMMES (1960, Claude Chabrol, A+), LE BOUCHER (1970, Claude Chabrol, A+) และ POULET AU VINAIGRE (1985, Claude Chabrol, A+) แต่นักแสดงที่ฝากฝีมือทางการแสดงไว้อย่างสุดยอดในเรื่องนี้คือ Nathalie Richard

3.COUP DE CHALEUR (2010, Christophe Barraud, A+)
A female cop has to handle a town in panic, while the water runs dry, the electricity goes out, the nuclear power plant has problems, her brother is going to jail, and some characters must undergo some surgery in a hospital (Yes, it's a cliche for "disaster movies". Hahaha.)

4.NOTRE DAME DES BARJOTS (2010, Arnaud Sélignac, A+)
"Véra (Zabou Breitman) is an emergency psychiatrist. One evening, her boss Russel pays her a visit having found his son delirious alongside the butchered body of a young girl. He wants Véra to certify him as being insane to help him avoid prison. Véra refuses. Lieutenant Sanchez (Catherine Jacob) begins her investigation."

5.MURKY PASTS (PASSÉS TROUBLES) (2006, Serge Meynard, A+/A)
A female cop and her male partner investigate something. What is interesting in this mini-series is its haunting quality. Some parts of it are as haunting as TWIN PEAKS, though I think MURKY PASTS doesn't have to be as haunting as that. The other interesting thing is the shift in the narrative. The first half of this mini-series focuses on a main character, but that main character is suddenly killed in the middle of the story, so the second half of this mini-series shifts its focus to the other main character. This shift reminds of PSYCHO.

6.QUAND VIENT LA PEUR (2010, Élisabeth Rappeneau)
A female cop investigates a serial killer who is killing many women with brunette hair in a small town filled with prejudice for the Algerian immigrants. I have watched only the first half of this mini-series and I give this first half A+++++.
