THE STORY OF A SMALL TOWN (1979, Lee Hsing, Taiwan, A+30)

+++

ENGLISH

The period of time that began on a date last year
Is almost over, but I won’t throw my calendar out
Half a year ago we were still meeting up
You waved to me at the crowded ticket gate

The kind little things you did without a second thought
Like picking the lint off my shoulders for me
Still hurt, hey, so bad to this very day

I’ll wait in tears   April Fool’s
For you to call
Surprise me   April Fool’s
I don’t mind if you lie
I don’t mind if you lie
Say that you like me one more time

After reading the horoscope for Cancer
I looked at your sign without even realizing it
I hope you the amazing dream you talked about
With a sparkle in your eye comes true someday

I put on the spring color sweater you used to like
For the first time in a while
And the way it feels on my skin, hey, is so bittersweet

I’ll wait in tears   April Fool’s
Surprise me
With that familiar voice of yours   April Fool’s
I don’t mind if you lie
I don’t mind if you lie
Say that you still like me

I’ll wait in tears   April Fool’s
For you to call
Surprise me   April Fool’s
I don’t mind if you lie
I don’t mind if you lie
Say that you like me one more time

AWE SHOCKS (2011, Ojoboca, Germany, 3min, A+30)

Oro Parece (2012, Ojoboca, Germany, 6min, A+30)

THE HANDEYE (BONE GHOSTS) (2012, Ojoboca, Germany, 7min, A+30)

FRAGMENTS UNTITLED #1 (2012, doplgenger, Serbia, 7min, A+30)

Viriyaporn Boonprasert

FRAGMENTS UNTITLED #2 (2014, doplgenger, Serbia, 6min, A+30)

ดูแล้วนึกว่าต้องปะทะกับ Martin Arnold ผู้กำกับ ALONE: LIFE WASTES ANDY HARDY (1998)

FRAGMENTS UNTITLED #6 (2022, doplgenger, Serbia, 6min, A+30)

2 (“MEDICAL BORDERS: VISIBILITY AND SHADOW KNOWLEDGE” VERSION) (2024, Maria Iorio, Raphaël Cuomo, Switzerland, 48min, A+30)

TWO BOOKINGS FOR SEND HELP

FAVORITE SCENE: CHILDREN (1976, Terence Davies, UK, 47min, A+30)

+++

DORAEMON: NOBITA AND THE GALAXY SUPER-EXPRESS (1996, Tsutomu Shibayama, Japan, animation, 97min)

+++

REWIND FORWARD (2017, Justin Stoneham, Switzerland, documentary, 24min, A+30)

REWIND FORWARD (2017, Justin Stoneham, Switzerland, documentary, 24min, A+30)

REMERCIEMENTS DE JEAN-LUC GODARD À SON PRIX D’HONNEUR DU CINÉMA SUISSE (2015, Jean-Luc Godard, 5min, A+30)

Godard พูดถึง Michael Servetus ในหนังเรื่อง REMERCIEMENTS DE JEAN-LUC GODARD À SON PRIX D’HONNEUR DU CINÉMA SUISSE (2015, Jean-Luc Godard, 5min, A+30) ดูหนังเรื่องนี้ได้ที่นี่

Erwin Ballabio
Jules Humbert-droz

THE ASHES OF GRAMSCI Pier Paolo Pasolini

DOGHEAD TEA (2014, Marie-Catherine Theiler, Switzerland, 17min, A+15)

DOGHEAD TEA (2014, Marie-Catherine Theiler, Switzerland, 17min, A+15)

THE LAST BUS (2008, Maria Hengge, A+30) และ CROSS (2011, Marina Vroda, A+30) ที่สร้างความพิศวงกับเราในรูปแบบคล้ายๆกัน คือเราว่าหนังสั้น 3 เรื่องนี้อาจจะต้องการสื่อถึงอะไรบางอย่างเกี่ยวกับชีวิตมนุษย์, ความเป็นมนุษย์เหมือนกันน่ะ แต่ CROSS ทำออกมาได้ดีที่สุด

RIP Peter Liechti

RIP Peter Liechti

I just knew that Peter Liechti passed away on April 4, 2014. I have seen only one of his films—THE SOUND OF INSECTS, RECORD OF A MUMMY (2009), which was shown in the World Film Festival of Bangkok in 2010. I like that film very much. I think it is like an essay film, or a film which is partly documentary, partly fiction, and partly experimental. It lets me flow into the stream of consciousness of a man who committed suicide. I hope to see more of his old films in the future.

GIVE US FREEDOM (ROUGE PAROLE) (2012, Elyes Baccar, documentary, A+30)

GIVE US FREEDOM (ROUGE PAROLE) (2012, Elyes Baccar, documentary, A+30)

A very inspiring documentary about a revolution in Tunisia.

One scene that I like shows many people who work for news programs in a TV station say that they don't know how to work with "freedom for the press", because they used to work under the oppression and the censorship for many decades.

(The photo below does not come from the film, but from the revolution.)

TEEN STORIES (2010, Béatrice Bakhti, Switzerland, documentary, 6 hours 37 minutes, A+30)

TEEN STORIES (2010, Béatrice Bakhti, Switzerland, documentary, 6 hours 37 minutes, A+30)

DÉCHAÎNÉES (2008, Raymond Vouillamoz, Switzerland, A+++++)

SPOILERS ALERT

Things I like in this film include:

1.Adele Haenel, who also gives a wonderful performance in WATER LILIES (2007, Céline Sciamma, A+) and THE DEVILS (2002, Christophe Ruggia, A++++++++++).

2. The abortion topic. The film presents this topic in a very interesting way. The heroine, who is 19-year-old, is 4-week pregnant. Her nice boyfriend, who is studying for a Master's Degree, loves her very much and decides that he will marry her and they will raise the child together. But after the heroine sees a woman who is busy trying to control her own children, she decides to have an abortion.

That's what makes me worship this film. While many films choose to end with the birth of a child or the pregnancy of the heroine, or present the image of a woman happily raising her own children, "the image of a woman raising her own children" here is the real cause that makes the heroine decides to have an abortion. The "happy ending" of this film is the opposite of the happy endings of many films that I saw.

I think this film should be screened together with GOD'S OFFICES (2008, Claire Simon, A+++++) and LE PROCÈS DE BOBIGNY (2006, François Luciani, A+++++), starring Sandrine Bonnaire and Anouk Grinberg, which also talk about abortion issues in an interesting way.

THE UNBORN CHILD (SOP DEK 2002) (2011, Arnont Mingkwanta + James Thanadol, Thailand, B+) also talks about the abortion issue, though it may present very different opinions on this topic from DÉCHAÎNÉES, GOD'S OFFICES, and LE PROCÈS DE BOBIGNY.

3. DÉCHAÎNÉES also talks about film preservation and vinegar syndrome. This is the topic which is a huge problem in Thailand, too. Many old Thai films are lost forever because there is not enough film preservation. This topic also reminds me of the film MANÔ (2005, Georges Felner, Portugal, A+++++).

4.The character played by Irène Jacob in this film is interesting. She is not happy to see her daughter getting married with a nice husband, because she wants her daughter to have sex with many many men first, or have a lot of sexual experiences, before getting married.

STEALTH (2008, Lionel Baier, A+)

This is what I wrote in Kanchat Rangseekansong’s facebook (with some added details):

I like STEALTH very much, though I think there's something intriguing about it, including

1.The characters seem to pay too much attention to their own ethnic backgrounds, which may or may not be a kind of right-wing thinking.

2.The brother helps the woman only because she shares the same ethnic background with him.

3.The film seems to intentionally or unintentionally imply that “to help stranger is to endanger yourself”, such as when the sister tries to intervene in a couple’s fighting and when the brother and sister gives a lift to a woman. Maybe the film just tries to portray the reality of this cruel world. I’m not sure.

4.Maybe the most important reason why I feel reluctant to give this film A+++++ is just because the film seems to end with the love and connection between family members, which is something I can’t identify with.

There are also many things I love in this film, such as

1.It is a film in which the main character is gay, but it talks about the topics rarely found in other gay films.

2.It is a little bit unpredictable.

3.It portrays the hypocrisy of some people.

4.The sister is a very interesting character.

SEVEN REASONS WHY I WORSHIP "SEVEN DUMPSTERS AND A CORPSE"

This is my comment in Bioscope webboard:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=1532.30

WATER (2005, Deepa Mehta, A+/A)

SEVEN DUMPSTERS AND A CORPSE (2007, Thomas Haemmerli, A+++++)

Time passes after the World Film Festival of Bangkok 2008, and I find that films that I have always been thinking about are LA RABIA and SEVEN DUMPSTERS AND A CORPSE, because these two films seem to “UNDERSTAND ME” and give me great warmth in my heart every time I think of them. According to my personal feelings, I think of EAT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY and THE HEADLESS WOMAN as “GREAT WORKS OF ART”, but I think of LA RABIA and SEVEN DUMPSTERS AND A CORPSE as “GREAT FRIENDS OF MINE”, because these two films are like friends who truly understand me and make me feel that the world is not a lonely place.

SEVEN REASONS WHY I WORSHIP SEVEN DUMPSTERS AND A CORPSE

1.It gives me a great pleasure to see the director destroy all of his dead mother’s belongings. I think I rarely get this kind of great pleasure from other films. Are there any other films like this? Can you give me any suggestions?

2.I like the fact that this film pays attention to what most films overlook—the trouble with the decaying corpse and the belongings left behind by the deceased.

3.The director’s feeling of disgust towards his own mother after he found out that his mother had planned to sue him for not paying her enough money

4.The deep hatred between his mother and his father

5.The deep hatred between his mother and his grandmother, who accused her own daughter of stealing the man she loved

6.The director’s frank revelation of the racism in his own family. If I remember it correctly, his grandmother looked down on Kofi Annan who attended the wedding of the director’s parents.

This revelation of racism in the director’s own family reminds me of THE LONG DAY CLOSES (1992, Terence Davies, A+). I think there’s an interesting documentary which deals with this issue, but I haven’t seen it yet. It’s called TRACES OF THE TRADE: A STORY FROM THE DEEP NORTH (2008, Katrina Browne)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1157728/

7. I like the traces on the floor which show that the corpse of the director’s mother used to be there. It seems to make me understand WHAT LIFE IS.

TEN RECOMMENDED DVDS

FAVORITE SONG

YOUR MIND IS TWISTED (THE CUBEGUYS REMIX) – Greg, Jeroenski & Roog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT4k_44Oikk

Thanks to Parichaba who recommends me this song.

-------------------------------------

This is my comment in Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/04/dvds.html

I’m sorry that some of the following DVDs are not region-1.

I just knew from Wise Kwai’s blog about some new interesting Malaysian DVDs. They are:

1.LOVE CONQUERS ALL (2006, Tan Chui Mui)

2.THREE SHORT FILMS BY TAN CHUI MUI

3.VILLAGE PEOPLE RADIO SHOW (2007, Amir Muhammad)

4.BEFORE WE FALL IN LOVE AGAIN (2006, James Lee)

I saw all these films and like them very much. You can buy these DVDs from this website:
http://www.dahuangpictures.com/shop/

Wise Kwai’s blog is here:
http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/

Other DVDs which I highly recommend are Swiss films with English subtitles which can be bought from http://www.artfilm.ch/. I don’t know whether they were released long time ago or just released recently, but I love all of them.

5.NOCTURNE (2003, Riccardo Signorell)
http://www.artfilm.ch/nocturne.php?lang=e
This film shows a few days in the life of a suicidal man. The film is almost plotless. I think this film lacks ‘the intensity of life’ which is something found in some films by Louis Malle (LE FEU FOLLET), Philippe Garrel, Maurice Pialat, or Jean Eustache. However, considering this film comes from an unknown director, I think it is much better than expected.

6.CORN IN PARLIAMENT (2003, Jean Stephane Bron)
http://www.artfilm.ch/jeanstephanebron.php
This superb political documentary is sold together with other two films by Jean Stephan Bron. They are CONNU DE NOS SERVICES (1997) and LA BONNE CONDUITE (1999).

7.A LONG WINTER WITHOUT FIRE (2004, Greg Zglinski)
http://www.artfilm.ch/toutunhiversansfeu.php
Aurelien Recoing (TIME OUT) gives a great performance in this film.

There are also some old DVDs which I would like to recommend:

8.COMING HOME (2003, Andreas Kleinert, Germany)
I just found that amazon.com has this DVD with English subtitles. I haven’t seen this film, but it won a lot of awards, and I love OUT OF TIME (NEBEN DER ZEIT) (1995), which is also directed by Andreas Kleinert.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51HBN8QXSEL._SS500_.jpg

9.GETTING MY BROTHER LAID (2001, Sven Taddicken, Germany)
I totally love the ending of this film and EMMA’S BLISS (2006, Sven Taddicken). This DVD with English subtitle is available from amazon.com

10.ABSOLUTE WILSON (2006, Katharina Otto-Bernstein)
Last year I was fascinated by VIDEO 50 (1978, Robert Wilson), and I am glad to know that there is a documentary on Robert Wilson available as DVD from amazon.com. I haven’t seen this documentary, but I’m sure it’s interesting.

This is my comment in Pilgrim Akimbo’s blog:
http://pilgrimakimbo.blogspot.com/2007/12/der-alte-film-ist-tot.html

I enjoy reading this very much, especially your imagination about what these directors would be if they are house guests.

As for Schlondorff’s DVDs, I strongly recommend YOUNG TORLESS (1966), which is adapted from a novel by Robert Musil, and THE NINTH DAY (2004), which is about a moral dilemma of a Catholic priest during the Nazi era. THE NINTH DAY is like a companion piece to AMEN (2002, Costa-Gavras), but I find THE NINTH DAY more thought-provoking, more philosophical, and less dramatic than AMEN, thus THE NINTH DAY is the one that leaves a more long-lasting impression.

MY FIFTH POLL: HYSTERICAL HEROINES

I was very busy last weekend. So my fifth poll comes a little bit late. First, let’s look at the result of the fourth poll.

IN WHICH FILM DO YOU FIND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAIN CHARACTERS VERY INTERESTING?
There are 10 people voting in this poll, including my vote for FREVEL.

1.BREATHLESS (1959, Jean-Luc Godard) 3 votes

2.BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ (Rainer Werner Fassbinder) 2 votes

3.BETRAYED (1988) + CAPOTE (2005) + FREVEL (1983) + THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006) + “LUST, CAUTION” (2007) + UNE PARTIE DE PLAISIR (Claude Chabrol) each got 1 vote.

9.MONSTER (Patty Jenkins) + RIPLEY’S GAME each got no vote.

Thank you very much for everyone who participated in it. To tell you the truth, I like BREATHLESS the least among all the choices. Hahaha.

I think I learn some lessons from the relationships in BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ, “LUST, CAUTION” and UNE PARTIE DE PLAISIR. At least it tells me not to trust someone easily, though you know that person very very well.

I think I feel the most involved in the relationship in CAPOTE. The relationship in BETRAYED used to be a kind of my daydream when I was a schoolboy. I used to imagine that I was a strong woman like Debra Winger who had to deal with a handsome villain like in this film.

THE LIVES OF OTHERS and MONSTER made me cry.

-------------------------------------------------------------

My fifth poll is inspired by Mr. PC, Filmsick, and Merveillesxx from Bioscope webboard. They are fascinated by the crazy scene of Isabelle Adjani in POSSESSION. So my fifth poll is about insane or nearly insane heroines. All of these are my favorite heroines.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER OR PERFORMER?

1.Beatrice Dalle in BETTY BLUE (1986, Jean-Jacques Beineix)

10.Bulle Ogier in THE SALAMANDER (1971, Alain Tanner)

--I forgot to allow the voter to cast multiple votes in this poll. I’m sorry about that. So in this poll you can cast only one vote.

--I love all these ten female characters, but I choose to vote for BREMEN FREEDOM, because this is one of my most favorite films of all time. When will this film be released as DVD?

--------------------------------------------------------------------

--This is my wish list for films with insane female characters:
(I know most of them through TIME OUT FILM GUIDE.)

1.DIALOGUES WITH MADWOMEN (1993, Allie Light)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109619/

2.THE GRASS IS SINGING (1981, Michael Raeburn)
Adapted from Doris Lessing’s novel. Starring Karen Black
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084033/

3.I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN (1977, Anthony Page)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51G1YA2N83L._SS500_.jpg

Synopsis from http://www.amazon.com/

“"While ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST offered a subversive and satirical look at a psychiatric institutions, ROSE GARDEN delivered a dramatic, emotionally compelling portrait of a young woman's experience of psychiatric treatment. This Oscar(R)-nominated screenplay was adapated from the best-selling novel by Hannah Green. It features a critically acclaimed performance by a young Kathleen Quinlan in an extremely challenging role. Shot with stark realism, the film pulls no punches in its depiction of a psychiatric ward, while maintaining individual and sensitive portrayals of the hospital's residents." -- Roger Corman~~~In her critically acclaimed performance, Kathleen Quinlan inhabits Deborah, a mentally ill teen who struggles between fantasy and reality, escaping to her own imaginary world. Deborah is sent to a psychiatric hospital for treatment by Dr. Fried (Ingmar Bergman favorite Bibi Andersson), who must attempt to rescue Deborah from the cruel beauty of her inner world.~”

4.LILITH (1964, Robert Rossen)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X98nfvMNadA
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51D7PVCWE8L._SS500_.jpg

Synopsis from http://www.amazon.com/
“Few actresses are adored by the camera as much as Jean Seberg is in the brooding, 1964 psychodrama Lilith. The legendary American and European star (Godard's Breathless), playing Lilith Arthur, fixes one's attention on her every nuance in Robert Rossen's tale of a beautiful, sexual omnivore and psychotic patient at a New England mental hospital. Withdrawn into her small world of dolls and fantasies, Lilith responds to the attention of a laconic, Korean War veteran, Vincent Bruce (Warren Beatty), who is trying to find himself by working as an occupational therapist. Burdened by a murky, guilt-ridden past (involving his mentally ill mother), Vincent gradually falls into an unnervingly passionate affair with Lilith--much less a romance than a shared journey toward mutual implosion. Rossen's severe, sincere, stark black-and-white drama is sometimes lost in a muddle of undefined character motivations, but it's quite a ride toward the film's last-minute epiphany. Watch for Gene Hackman in a small role. --Tom Keogh”

5.NO MERCY, NO FUTURE (1981, Helma Sanders-Brahms)

6.POSSESSED (1947, Curtis Bernhardt)
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/512EA32WWVL._SS500_.jpg

Synopsis from http://www.amazon.com/
“Possessed has an abundance of noir atmosphere (everything gets to be as shadowy as the inside of Louise's brain) and a full ration of Crawford at her most florid. The story is a wild ride: an invalid wife, a lonely widower, a daughter resentful of former nurse Louise's new status in the household. Plus there's the true crazy-making love of Louise's life, an engineer (Van Heflin) whose heart is as dry as his manner is breezy ("When a woman kisses me, Louise, she has to take pot luck"). The film's overripe writing is balanced by Joseph Valentine's sharp-angled photography, to say nothing of the vectors of Joan Crawford's sharp-angled face. As a companion piece to Crawford's Mildred Pierce performance, this one takes Mildred to her extreme--single-minded obsession and derangement. What Crawford lacked in subtlety she made up for in sheer commitment, which perhaps suits this character very well. --Robert Horton”

7.PUZZLE OF A DOWNFALL CHILD (1970, Jerry Schatzberg)
Starring Faye Dunaway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEQlbIkmnqQ
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066262/

8.SYBIL (1976, Daniel Petrie)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72g7fdgQtyw
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41fEv6C39BL._SS500_.jpg

Synopsis from http://www.amazon.com/

“Based on a true story, this telefilm debut in 1976 to extraordinary response. Sally Field - in an Emmy Award winning and career-turning performance - portrays Sybil, a woman suffering from multiple personality disorder who develops over 16 distinct personalities in order to cope and escape haunting memories of her harrowing childhood. Joanne Woodward plays the understanding and compassionate psychiatrist that helps Sybil confront her horrific past and eliminate her demons.”

9.LA TETE DE NORMANDE ST-ONGE (1975, Gilles Carle)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073830/

10.YOU ARE NOT I (1981, Sara Driver)

THE SALAMANDER (1971, ALAIN TANNER, A+++++)

1.COUP POUR COUP (1972, Marin Kamitz, A+)
From video

2.THE SALAMANDER (1971, Alain Tanner, Switzerland, A+)
From video

I fell in love with the character Rosemonde (Bulle Ogier) in this film. I fell in love with her after I saw her shaking her head to the music and keeping shaking her head for a long time after the music has stopped.

Many years ago I saw FOURBI (1996, Alain Tanner, B+) at Alliance Francaise. I think FOURBI is kind of like a sequel to THE SALAMANDER. The characters in these two films have something similar, though the films are not really connected. The connection between these two films is kind of like the connection in Wong Kar-wai's films, in Philippe Garrel's films, or in Andre Techine's films. There is something in these films which reminds the viewers of something in other films by the same directors.

I think that if I have a chance to see FOURBI again, I might like it more. Now I can't remember anything in FOURBI.

--There are many pieces of art shown in SOME PROPOSALS FOR THE NEXT FUTURE, including a sketch by Arin Rungjang (the one who directed NEVER CONGREGATE, NEVER DISREGARD). The sketch is called AND THEN LOVE WILL LIVE IN ITS WAY (2007). This sketch is "manipulated" from MONK BY THE SEA (1809, Caspar David Friedrich)

I don't have a photo of AND THEN LOVE WILL LIVE IN ITS WAY. I only have MONK BY THE SEA here below:
