INVINCIBLE EAST: ONLY ME IN 10,000 YEARS (ตงฟางปู๋ป้าย...

--Though I can't say the whole of this play touches me deeply, I still give A+ to this play because I like some moments near the end of this play very much. My favorite moments start from the moment when Pu (Athapol Anunthavorasakul) talks to Aom (Saowanee Wongjinda) about the real reason why he stages his play INVINCIBLE EAST.

The acting of Athapol in that moment is superb. I felt as if there is an aura of seriousness, or of something deeply felt, or some deep feelings, coming out of his body. Suddenly his character turns into a real human being in my point of view.

Starting from that moment, the play seems to shift its tone. I feel as if the early part of the play is just a comedic, moderately entertaining thing. The early part of the play is full of "moderately interesting characters" in my opinion. They seem to be the kind of characters you can easily find in any averagely good plays/TV series/films.

But in the latter part of the play, I feel as if the characters veer towards real human beings. I started to care for these characters. The characters seem to have real flesh and blood, real feelings and emotions in the latter part. The tone of the play becomes dramatic and serious. I like this tone very much.

What I like the most in this play is some uncomfortable, awkward moments between characters near the end. It's when these characters open their hearts and say some ugly truths. These moments thrill me a lot. And it reminds me of some great moments in SECRETS AND LIES (1995, Mike Leigh).

--Another thing that I like very much is that Pu, which I think is the protagonist of the play, is an unlikeable character. I mean it is safer to make a play or a film in which the main character is "likeable", or the main character with whom the audience can easily identify. But Pu is very unlikeable in my point of view. And having an unlikeable character as the protagonist will surely disturb some audience. But I think it is a little bit bold for the play to present an unlikeable protagonist like this.

I think Pu is unlikeable because what he does is very bad. I mean if he is a good guy, he should have told his girlfriend straightforwardly that he is gay whenever he learns this truth about himself. He shouldn't have tried to tell his girlfriend indirectly like this. But though Pu is not a good guy, he is still a human being. And I like a play or a film which shows us the flaws of human beings like this.

One thing that I think is very funny in the play is the moment when Pu tells his girlfriend that he "has become the Invincible East". This character can't even say that he "is gay". He dares not pronounce the word "gay", and chooses to use the word "the Invincible East" instead. This character is really a deeply flawed human being.

--I also like the self-reflexiveness of this play. This is a play-within-a-play, and some parts of the play make me wonder if they are inspired by some real things happening in the Thai theatre circle or not.

In conclusion:

1.I give A+++++ to 10% of this play. It's the awkward, uncomfortable moments between the characters when some truths are revealed. I think these moments are as powerful as SECRETS AND LIES.

2.I give A+ to 20% of this play. It's the romantic relationship between Bomb (Watcharayut Suradet) and Aom. This subplot really satisfies my sexual fantasy. I think it is as sexually satisfying as some subplots in some French miniseries, such as THE SOB OF THE ANGELS (2008, Jacques Otmezguine) and 3 WOMEN...ONE SUMMER NIGHT (2005, Sébastien Grall). These miniseries have some handsome young men falling in love with some middle-aged female characters. It is the kind of fantasy that I like very much.

However, though the subplot of Bomb and Aom satisfies my sexual fantasy, it does not touch me deeply, and it is not totally convincing. Maybe it is just because it is the subplot, not the main plot.

If possible, I hope someone makes the sequel of INVINCIBLE EAST: ONLY ME IN 10,000 YEARS by focusing on the romantic relationship between Bomb and Aom. And I wish this imaginary play not only satisfies my sexual fantasy, but also turns out to be as convincing, powerful, and heartbreaking as COFFEE LOVE (2009, Sakchai Kiatpunyaopas), which concerns the love of a fat woman and a handsome man, or as the films LE PETIT AMOUR (1988, Agnès Varda) and MOURIR D'AIMER (2009, Josée Dayan), each of which presents the romantic relationship between a 15-year-old boy and a 40-year-old woman.

3.I give A- to 70% of this play, which I think is moderately entertaining.

--Another thing that I think is interesting in this play is that the whole story of the play seems to take place in a very short period of time (if I remember it correctly). Though the story happens in a short period of time, it still makes us understand some important things in the lives of the characters, such as the ten-year relationship between Pu and Mik, Mik's fear of being a spinster, and the trauma of Aom.

This time-constraint technique reminds me of what Fred Kelemen said. If I remember it correctly, he said something like, "If you want to present the whole life of a character or the whole war, you don't have to show the audience many stages in the life of that character or the war, you can show only one day in the life of that character or one day in that war. That one day can contain the essence of the whole life of that character. The audience may see only "one day" in the life of that character, but the audience will understand the whole life of that character."

Because I like this time-constraint technique very much, I decided to make the list below:

My favorite films/plays of which the stories, or most of the stories, concern only a short period of time

(in alphabetical order)

1.BEFORE SUNRISE (1995, Richard Linklater)

2.CLÉO FROM 5 TO 7 (1961, Agnès Varda)

MARATHON FILM FESTIVAL GAME PART 2
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2011/09/marathon-film-festival-game-part-2.html

This game is inspired by Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn.

The questions below mostly concern Thai films which were shown in the Marathon Film Festival from 1997 to 2011, but also concern foreign films and Thai films shown outside the festival.

The word "film" here includes all kinds of moving images.

14.15 V (2010, Thee Boonkreangkai, 23.25 min)

15.Discuss the importance of sound in the following films:

15.1 ANAT(T)A (2006, Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr + Koichi Shimizu), which presents interactive sound

15.2 AT LEAST/MODERATELY/TREMENDOUSLY (อย่างน้อย/อย่างกลาง/อย่างมาก) (2011, Tritos Termarbsri, 90 min), in which the characters can control the soundtrack of the film

15.3 EMPLOYEES LEAVING THE LUMIERE FACTORY (พิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งแสง) (2010, Chaloemkiat Saeyong, 31 min), in which the ambient sound, or the room tone, becomes extremely important

15.4 GAZE AND HEAR (สายตา รับฟัง) (2010, Nontawat Numbenchapol, 10 min), which has extremely powerful soundtrack

15.5 FRIENDS (เพื่อน) (2010, Pichanund Laohapornsvan, 63 min), which presents intentionally unrealistic voices of some animals and a krasue (a kind of Thai female ghost)

15.6 GRANDMA CHA WANTS TO GET SURREAL (ยายชาอยากเซอร์เรียล) (2009, Saowapak Suriyawongpaisal, 21 min), which presents unreasonable sound, such as the sound of cat fighting while the cats are not in sight

15.7 HOME COMPUTER (2011, Teeranit Siangsanoh, 19 min), which presents extremely discordant sound

15.8 SHE TALKS, WHAT THEY WHISPER (2008, Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa), which uses interesting sound bites

16.9 Suphisara Kittikunarak (THOM)

16.10 Wasunan Hutawach (DAW)

17.Emily Dickinson wrote the following poem:

" I felt a funeral in my brain,
And mourners, to and fro,
Kept treading, treading, till it seemed
That sense was breaking through.

And when they all were seated,
A service like a drum
Kept beating, beating, till I thought
My mind was going numb.

And then I heard them lift a box,
And creak across my soul
With those same boots of lead,
Then space began to toll

As all the heavens were a bell,
And Being but an ear,
And I and silence some strange race,
Wrecked, solitary, here.

And then a plank in reason, broke,
And I dropped down and down--
And hit a world at every plunge,
And finished knowing--then--"

Which filmmakers in the group above (Anocha, Araya, Janenarong, Pawara, Pimpaka, Proudmary, Ratchapoom, Sununta, Suphisara, Wasunan) would you like to adapt this poem into a film? And why?

18.Emily Dickinson wrote the following poem:

" My Life had stood - a Loaded Gun -
In Corners - till a Day
The Owner passed - identified -
And carried Me away -

And now We roam in Sovereign Woods -
And now We hunt the Doe -
And every time I speak for Him -
The Mountains straight reply -

And do I smile, such cordial light
Upon the Valley glow -
It is as a Vesuvian face
Had let its pleasure through -

And when at Night - Our good Day done -
I guard My Master's Head -
'Tis better than the Eider-Duck's
Deep Pillow - to have shared -

To foe of His - I'm deadly foe -
None stir the second time -
On whom I lay a Yellow Eye -
Or an emphatic Thumb -

Though I than He - may longer live
He longer must - than I -
For I have but the power to kill,
Without--the power to die--"

Which filmmakers in the group below would you like to adapt this poem into a film? And why?

18.1 Angsumalee Senachai (LADYNIGHT)

18.2 Kulnatee Tantipisanu (DEAD PLAN)

18.3 Nisarat Komsup (PSYCHOSIS)

18.4 Pakwan Suksomthin (NEW GENERATION)

RIP KRONG KANGKENGDANG (1928-2011)

Krong Kangkengdang, who starred in more than 200 Thai films, passed away a few days ago. He had been dead for a few days before someone found his corpse in his house.

The photo is from my favorite TV series—A SELF-MADE LADY (around 1992). Krong is the man on the left. Namngern Boonnuck is in the middle. Tulip Naksompop is on the right. Namngern Boonnuck also stars in one of my most favorite films this year—FORGET ME NOT (2010, Naphat Chaithiangthum, 30 min).

WILD HEART (2011, Nimit Kinunti, B+)

You can watch this film here (no English subtitles):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBSAX6pzVik

FAKEBOOK (2011, Sirapatshara Neimphuang, A+)

You can watch this film here (no subtitle needed):
http://video.postjung.com/32613.html

MARATHON FILM FESTIVAL GAME PART 2

You can find MARATHON FILM FESTIVAL GAME PART 1 here (in Thai):
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2011/08/marathon-2011-game.html

This game is inspired by Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn.

The questions below mostly concern Thai films which were shown in the Marathon Film Festival from 1997 to 2011, but also concern foreign films and Thai films shown outside the festival.

The word "film" here includes all kinds of moving images.

Answer these questions and your life will be better:

1.Discuss the evolution of Thai short films starting from THE MAGIC RING (แหวนวิเศษ) (1929, King Prajadhipok, 30 min) until THE ISLAND OF UTOPIA (2010, Pramote Sangsorn, 20 min)

2.Discuss how the word "auteur" can or cannot be applied to Weera Rakbankerd, who directed many films, including 2 SECOND IN BAD LOVE (2007), 4 MINUTE IN BROKEN SOUL (2007), MESSAGES ARE NOT TRUE STORY (2008) , COMPETITIVE STRATEGY (2010), and ONE (2011).

3.The word "auteur" is mostly used for directors. Discuss how the word "auteur" can be freely applied to such distinguished cinematographers as Anupong Posuwan, who has shot many Thai short films.

4.Discuss the development of the thematic and aesthetic strategies of these filmmakers:

4.1 Anucha Boonyawatana, starting from SCARLET DESIRE (2001, 24 min) until EROTIC FRAGMENT NO. 1, 2, 3 (2011, 5.30 min)

4.2 Bunjong Pisanthanakul, starting from OLD SKAR (แผลเก่า) (2000) until GUAN MUEN HO (2010)

4.3 Napat Treepalawisetkun, starting from A SERIES OF SALINEE EVENT (ปรากฏการณ์ เรื่องราว สาวสาลินี) (2007, 14 min) until THE WOMB IN AQUARIUM (มดลูกในตู้ปลา) (2010, 23 min)

4.4 Norachai Kajchapanont, starting from A LITTLE DREAM (ฝันไม่ไกล ต้องไปให้ถึง) (2006) until SOMWANT 2553 (2010, 30 min)

4.5 Patana Chirawong, starting from MILLENNIUM [IN GOD WE TRUST] (1999) until THE MISSING PIECE (2011, 84 min)

4.6 Sophon Sakdaphisit, starting from TIME (กาล_เวลา) (2001) until LADDALAND (2011)

4.7 Twatpong Tangsajjapoj, starting from ISLAND (2001) until STOP HERE (หยุด) (2011, 2.30 min)

5.Discuss the influence of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, or the lack thereof, in these films:

5.1 BLACK-AND-WHITE FILM (2001, Montree Saelo, 6 min)

5.2 SLEEPING BEAUTY (2005, Chulayarnnon Siriphol, 40 min)

5.3 FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND (2007, Chaiwat Wiansantia)

6.1 Lav Diaz

6.2 Prachaya Lampongchat

6.3 Punlop Horharin

6.4 Semih Kaplanoglu

6.5 Teeranit Siangsanoh

7.Some filmmakers star in their own films. Some filmmakers make films about themselves. Discuss how the films of these following directors benefit or suffer from the twin roles of the directors/actors:

7.1 Alwa Ritsila
http://vimeo.com/alwaritsila/videos/sort:date

7.2 Kanes Boonyapanachoti

7.3 Kidlat Tahimik

CELINE AND JULIE GO DANCING 46: SHADES OF MARBLE – Trentemoller

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya9gjwN_ctU&feature=related

Thanks to Graiwoot for telling me about this beautiful song. I think this song unintentionally reminds me of the film AMER (2009, Hélène Cattet + Bruno Forzani, A+). I mean I think this song would fit into the film.

MY LIFE AS A CINEPHILE

Below is what I copied from a letter to my new friend, who asked some questions about my life as a cinephile:

As for your list of favorite filmmakers, this is what I think about them:

1.Ozu: I have seen only four films of his and have some personal problems with them, because Ozu seems to portray "family members who like one another". .. my personal life prevents me from "feeling connected" to his films.

However, among the four films I saw, I like EARLY SPRING (1956) very much, because this film doesn't deal with the bond between parents and children.

2.Antonioni: I like him very much, especially THE ECLIPSE. I like how he deals with landscape and the emptiness inside the characters' souls.

3. Bergman: I like him very much. My most favorite of his is THE SILENCE.

4.Buñuel: I like him very much, too. My most favorites of his are BELLE DE JOUR, THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE, and THE PHANTOM OF LIBERTY.

5.Almodovar. I like him a lot, but I'm not very crazy about him now, because my most favorite of his is PEPI, LUCI, BOM (1980).

6.Hiroshi Teshigahara: I have seen only WOMAN IN THE DUNES. I like it a lot, though if I were the hero in this film, I would kill the woman and myself instead of continue living in the dunes.

7.Masaki Kobayashi: I have seen only KWAIDAN (1964) and HARAKIRI (1962). I like them a lot.

8.Vittorio De Sica: I haven't seen any of his directorial works yet.

9.Jean-Pierre Melville: I like his films a lot, especially UN FLIC (1972).

10. Jean-Luc Godard: I worship him, though I don't always agree with everything he says. I find his films extremely fascinating. My most favorite of his is LA CHINOISE. I wrote about this film here:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061473/reviews?start=2

11.François Truffaut: I don't feel connected to some of his films, but my most favorite of his is TWO ENGLISH GIRLS (1971).

12.Milos Forman: I have seen only 6 films of his. I think his films are good. I give A+ to almost most of them, but they don't excite me personally. As for his early films, I have seen only BLACK PETER (1964).

13.Bernardo Bertolucci: I have seen only 8 films of his. I think of him like Milos Forman. He makes great films that don't excite me personally. Maybe my most favorite of his is THE GRIM REAPER (1962), because it is very Pasolini-esque.

14. Eric Rohmer: One of my most favorite directors of all time. THE GREEN RAY makes me cry a bucketful of tears.

15.Robert Bresson: One of my most favorite directors of all time.

16.Victor Erice: I worship THE QUINCE TREE SUN (1992), but I don't feel personally connected to THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE (1973).

17.Akira Kurosawa: I think his films are great, but they don't excite me personally. I think I have seen only 13 of his films. My most favorite is IKIRU (1952).

18. Ang Lee: I like some of his films very much. My most favorite is, of course, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN.

19.Zhang Yimou: My most favorite of his is NOT ONE LESS (1999).

As for myself:

1.I think I came to love films because I like handsome actors. When I was about 13 years old, I became so crazy for Tom Cruise that I decided to go to see a film in a theatre by myself for the first time. The first film that I saw alone is THE COLOR OF MONEY (1986, Martin Scorsese, A++++++++++). I like it very much. So I went to see many Hollywood films after that.

2.I enjoyed seeing Hollywood films and mainstream films for many years, then in early 1995, I watched THE GARDEN (1990, Derek Jarman), and it blew me away. It made me realize that non-mainstream films like this can give me such an intense pleasure.

3.My life changed completely in late 1995 when I decided to go to see a film at the Goethe Institute in Bangkok for the first time. The film shown there is CLASS ENEMY (1983, Peter Stein, West Germany, A+++++++++++++++). I worship it. It also made me realize that there are many great films in the world which are not famous. I had read film magazines since 1987, but from 1987 to early 1995 these film magazines had never mentioned that there's such a great film as CLASS ENEMY exists in this world. So I realized that from then on I should explore the world of film by myself, instead of relying on the famous quality of the films.

4.After seeing CLASS ENEMY, I think I have become a cinephile. I went to see many films at Alliance Française, Goethe Institute, and Duangkamol Filmhouse (a Thai cinematheque) in late 1990's and early 2000's. I have also seen many films in various film festivals in Bangkok until now.

As for my favorite filmmakers, they include:
(In alphabetical order)

1.Alexander Kluge

2.Apichatpong Weerasethakul

3.Bruce Baillie

4.Chaloemkiat Saeyong

5.Derek Jarman

6.Eric Rohmer

7.Herbert Achternbusch

8.Jacques Rivette

9.Jun Ichikawa

10.Lav Diaz

As for my favorite films, I have made a list of 100 of them here:
http://beyondthecanon.blogspot.com/2009/09/jit-phokaew.html

I haven't directed any films yet, but I have produced 11 films directed by Wachara Kanha. If you want to know the details, you can read it here:

LOSE (2011, Watcharapol Saisongkroh, A/A-)

You can watch this film here (no English subtitles):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FpX_UdFbSk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsccKqc-Dgs

There are a few things I like in this film, including:

1.The acting of Thitipol Rojanarowan as Golf in the film. I think his acting is quite natural. He is a real talent to watch. Golf is a kind of guy who is not expressive. He doesn't express his feelings through violent actions, strong words, or burst of tears. He is quite reserved, thus it is difficult for any young actors to play this role successfully. But I think Thitipol does a very good job in conveying the happiness, disappointment, and sadness of Golf via his eyes and his face.

However, though Thitipol is successful in playing this role, somehow I feel the film or the script of the film doesn't use or exploit his talent as much as I wish it should do. :-)

I mean I like his character very much. It should have been easy for me to feel connected with this character, because I used to experience the same kind of things that Golf experiences, such as falling for someone who belongs to a friend, being hurt by a close friend, or feeling that friendship may end because of the romantic relationship of a friend; but somehow I don't feel totally involved with this character, and I'm not sure why.

I think I might have given this film A+++++, if the film could dig deep into the feelings of Golf, especially the hurt that he experiences from falling for his friend's girlfriend and from being wrongly accused by his best friend. I think Thitipol has the ability to express those hurt feelings and other things that may make Golf a well-rounded character or look like a real human being. It's up to the filmmaker and the scriptwriter to make the best use of Thitipol's talent.

2. The beautiful cinematography and the fluid camerawork. I think the cinematography in this film is quite beautiful and its beauty is not suffocating or too intentional. However, I think some close-up scenes are a little bit too close.

I think Watcharapol's skill as a cinematographer has advanced a lot from last year. He's still very young. If he can shoot a film like this now, I'm sure he will be a good cinematographer in the future.

3.I like it very much that the film is not overdramatic. I especially like the opening scene when we see the normal activities of students. Many scenes in the film look more realistic than I expected. I mean these scenes are not really realistic, but I had expected that many films made by Thai high-school students would look melodramatic, so I can say that LOSE is not as melodramatic as I expected.

4.I like the ending of the film, or the way the film ends. The film could have ended more melodramatically, but it doesn't end like that.

I also like it very much that Golf doesn't get the girl. Judging from the girl's behavior near the end of the film (taking something without informing the owner properly), I think Golf is lucky not having a girlfriend like that. Hahaha.

5. I like that the flashback scenes near the end of the film are not repetitive, because these flashback scenes are not the scenes we have seen before in the film. However, that means I don't like the flashback scene in the middle of the film when Golf tries to decide whether he should give his doll to Fon or not. I mean this flashback scene is repetitive and may be redundant. I understand that it makes the audience understand clearly what Golf is thinking about and why he decides like that. But I would have loved it much more if there was no flashback scene in that moment, and the camera just lingered on Golf's face for one minute while he is thinking. It's just my personal taste: I like films which show the faces of the characters while they are thinking, but don't tell us straightforwardly what they are thinking about, such as SECRET DEFENSE (1997, Jacques Rivette), ONLY HUMAN (2009, Rouzbeh Rashidi), or TIME WITHIN TIME (2009, Menno Otten).

In conclusion, I think LOSE is a good film that doesn't quite fit to my personal tastes, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the story of the film is not my style. The "non-melodramatic" tone of the film is a good thing, but the film would have been more powerful as a dramatic film or a realistic film if the filmmaker/scriptwriter could find a way to dig deeper into the human qualities of his characters. I think it's just because the filmmakers are too young now. I'm sure Watcharapol will find a way to make more powerful films in the future. LOSE makes me feel certain that Watcharapol will be a good cinematographer, and I hope that life experiences, both good and bad ones, that await him in the future will help him create stories which are more powerful and great films which show us the deep understanding of human beings. I will wait and see.

ONE SUNNY MORNING (2011, BK Lim, Singapore, A+)

What I like very much about ONE SUNNY MORNING includes:

1.How the film opens and ends. I think there is some kind of poetic touches between the opening and the ending of the film. I'm not sure what the ending of this film means. Does Juan just think about his love for Nick? Anyway, I hope he returns to Nick.

2.The flirting scene at the swimming pool. I think it is quite sexy and funny. I like the bird's-eye view shot which shows Nick on the bridge.

3.The mysteries about the personal life and the motivation of Juan. Maybe the film doesn't intend to make them mysteries. I'm just not sure about them after seeing it for only one time. But I think it is good that the film doesn't tell them straightforwardly or explain everything too clearly.

I'm not sure why Juan leaves Nick. Does he really not love Nick any more? Does he ever love Nick at all? Does he have any other reasons why he leaves Nick? A Thai friend of mine guesses that Juan may have a wife and a child, and the photo near the end of the film may be the photo of Juan's child.

4.The film doesn't look down on both Nick and Juan. The film doesn't portray Juan as a heartless villain/anti-hero and doesn't portray Nick as just a funny, lusty gay guy. The film seems to indicate that their love might be real, at least temporarily, and each of them has a heart.

The mentioning of Michelangelo Antonioni in the ending credit makes me understand from which film the mime scene is inspired. I think it is inspired by BLOW UP. :-)

In conclusion, I like ONE SUNNY MORNING a lot, and I think it does quite well in portraying the problems in the lives or in the relationships of some gays. What I wish after I saw this film is that I hope Nick will find a true love after Juan. I hope Nick will find someone who really loves him, someone who doesn't have a wife and a child, someone who doesn't care about the oppressive society we live in, someone who will be truly worthy of Nick's love. That's the story of the sequel of ONE SUNNY MORNING playing in my own imagination. :-) :-) :-)

The photo below does not come from the film. It is just a photo of the main actor of the film.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 28

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596

Day 28: A film you wish you'd made: THE DEATH OF MARIA MALIBRAN (1972, Werner Schroeter). I wish my friends and I could make a film like this: a film in which we can sing and act, sometimes hysterically, without worrying about the plotlines or the stories. This is what I wrote about this film in imdb.com in 2001:

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 27

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596

Day 27: A filmmaker you would like to work with: Fred Kelemen. I think his films are great, and he is a very nice person. I once was his interpreter when he gave some interviews in his retrospective in Bangkok in 2007. This is a clip of me and him.

I think this is one of the best or the most beautiful Thai animations ever made, though being the best does not mean I can enjoy some parts of the story in this film.

Anyway, I am very fascinated by a character in this film very much. She is Gudjee, the hunchback lady who holds a grudge against the hero. If someone makes an animation which portrays Gudjee as the heroine, it would be very easy for me to give that animation A++++++++++.

12.THE PHOBIA (Narathip Chainarong, 14, B)

POISON 4

Thai films seen on Tuesday, July 26, 2011

1.POISON 4: THE MOST BASIC ANSWER IS BECAUSE I LIKE FILMS VERY MUCH (Eakarach Monwat, 21 min, A++++++++++)

BIRD NEEDS BB (Meathus Sirinawin, 10 min, A++++++++++)

I like this film very much, because this film unintentionally reminds me of how afraid I am of new technology, and how I become addicted to it after a while.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 26

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 26: A lousy actor/actress who keeps appearing in good films – Keanu Reeves. I like Keanu Reeves very much, because he is very handsome, and I think his acting is fine especially when his roles don’t require him to display complicated human emotions, such as in THE MATRIX, LITTLE BUDDHA, DANGEROUS LIAISONS, etc. But I found him very unconvincing in STREET KINGS (2008, David Ayer).

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 25

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 25: An actor/actress who you feel is wasting his/her talent on crappy films – Nophand Boonyai. I think Nophand is one of the most talented Thai actors, but he stars in one of the worst films ever made – BOA (2006, Chanin Muangsuwan). Fortunately, he can show his real talents in many stage plays.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 24

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 24: A pretentious film – THE GRANFATHER (1998, José Luis Garci). I think the film is visually gorgeous, but soulless.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 23

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 23: A film, short or clip of your own making, if you don’t have one, your favorite film or short clip from someone close to you – I haven’t directed any films, but I have produced 11 films, mostly short ones, directed by Wachara Kanha. These eleven films include INVADER (2011), which is 90 minute long. I like it very much.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 22

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 22: A filmmaker who is also a good actor that you love – Jiang Wen. I like his work as a director in THE SUN ALSO RISES (2007) and LET THE BULLETS FLY (2010), and I like his performance in THE LOST BLADESMAN (2011, Felix Chong + Alan Mak).

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 21

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 21: An actor who became a filmmaker that you love – Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. I love her performance in FORGET ME (1994, Noémie Lvovsky) and I like her work as a director in IT’S EASIER FOR A CAMEL (2003) and ACTRESSES (2007) very much.

30 DAY CINEPHILE CHALLENGE: DAY 20

http://www.facebook.com/pages/30-Day-Cinephile-Challenge/184987868220596?ref=ts

Day 20: Best quote from a filmmaker – “Film will only became an art when its materials are as inexpensive as pencil and paper. ” – Jean Cocteau.

FAVORITE MUSIC VIDEOS 19: YOU DON'T LOVE ME, YOU DON'T LEAVE ME – Jeasmine

I like the actor in this music video very much. I think he is very handsome.

Some reservations on TO WONG FOO THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, JULIE NEWMAR (1995, Beeban Kidron, A+++++)

This is from a friend's Facebook:

I like this film very much, though I think this film is a perfect example of how Hollywood likes to cheat the audience about the feelings of the characters. This film doesn't show us at all how Jason London's character reacts to the fact that the girl he pursues is actually a man. After the truth is revealed, we can see Jason London's character dance in the party. It is as if his feelings don't matter at all. On the contrary, TOMBOY (2011, Céline Sciamma, A+) treats this kind of thing much better.
