FAVORITE FILMS BY FEMALE DIRECTORS

FAVORITE FILMS BY FEMALE DIRECTORS

NOTE:
1.This list is inspired by and dedicated to Sonthaya Subyen and the blog http://dkfilmhouse.blogspot.com/

2.I guess nearly all of the directors listed here are female directors. I can't guarantee that all of them are female directors, because I can't find the information on some of them. I just guess from their names that they are highly likely to be female. But some names can be very misleading. I used to misunderstand for a while that these male directors were female:

2.1 Rosa von Praunheim

2.2 Karoly Makk

2.3 Valeri Todorovsky

2.4 Karen Shakhnazarov

2.5 Flora Gomes

So if I make any mistakes in my list here, please tell me. I apologize in advance if I make any mistakes.

3.I include some films in which female and male directors worked together.

4.Don't pay too much attention to the country categorization here. Some films really belong to many countries.

5. The list is first in country alphabetical order, then it is in annual chronological order, then it is in title alphabetical order.

6.I intentionally don't include some famous directors here because I am too lazy to write all the names. So I choose to write only the names which I really want to write or the names which I think should be more famous.

FILMS SEEN BETWEEN 1-12 AUG 2007

1.MEMORY OF THE LAST DECEMBER (2007, Artit Chotesajjanun, A+++++) 41 min
This film is about a young guy who works in a shrine and knows beforehand when he will die. He knows that he will die from a heart failure and he only has about one month left. He seems to achieve nothing meaningful during the last month of his life. He tries to get revenge on some bad people, but it backfires. He strikes a friendship with a prostitute. He reminisces about something in the past. He realizes that he still wants to do many things but he has no time left to do them. However, he seems to pass away with a very calm mind.

I feel very ecstatic watching the ending of this film. I don’t know if I misunderstand something in this film or not. Maybe my love for this film right now is based on my misunderstanding of the film. I don’t know if I will ever have a chance to watch this film again to check if I understand it rightly. Anyway, as for now, this film makes me feel very great.

2.TWILIGHT VIDEO IN AFTERNOON (2007, Rachawadee Komolsut, A+++++) 17.22 min
This film consists of three music videos. The first one shows scenes of beautiful nature. The second one shows scenes of lovely dolls. The third one show scenes of murder.

I like the first and second music videos very much. I think they have something in common with Tossapol Boonsinsukh’s films. Both Rachawadee Komolsut and Tossapol Boonsinsukh seem to have the magical power to change anything mundane into sublime by using their own cameras, instead of magical wands. I think the third music video is very interesting, too. And it helps Rachawadee distinguish herself from other Thai experimental filmmakers.

3.ALONE (2007, Teera Prachumkong, A+++++) 20 min
This ghost film scares me very much. I’m still trying not to think about this film or else I would not be able to sleep.

4.NEGATIVE THINKING (2007, Satit Ngernthong + Nattapong Kampueng-un, A+++++) 20 min
This film is about three boys who are strangely connected to one another. One of the boys disguises himself as a girl.

5.GRINDHOUSE: DEATH PROOF (2007, Quentin Tarantino, A+++++)
This is surely one of my most favorite Hollywood films of this year. I think I have never seen any films like this before.

6.THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (2007, David Silverman, A+)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0462538/

7.UGLY IS BEAUTIFUL (2007, Sukapat Lohwatcharin, A+) 26 min

8.WEAK (2007, Dhan Lhaow, A+) 20 min
This film is about a girl whose car hit a guy and made that guy a cripple. The film seems to give no definite answers to these characters’ problems. Or maybe I misunderstand the film. Or maybe there will be a sequel.

9.YOU’RE (2007, Saran Srisingchai, A+) 5 min
This is a black and white, silent film. It seems to have no story, just images of some people’s activities in dark surroundings. The images are very seductive.

10.THE CAGE (2007, Weerapol Padungcheewit, A+) 20 min
This film has a dream-within-dream-within-dream structure, and is quite haunting. It’s about a guy who has a nightmare about being ditched by his girlfriend and is trapped inside his house.

11.HAIRSPRAY (2007, Adam Shankman, A+/A)
I like the spirit of rebellion in this film very much.

12.GRIEN (2007, Kasemsak Poosri, A+/A) 10 min
This film is about internet conversation of a psychotic.

13.FARMER FIELD SCHOOL (2007, Supong Jitmuang, A+/A) 38 min
This is a documentary in a TV-style. What I like about this film is some interesting information presented in the film. This film tells me that in some farming communities in rural Thailand, what destroys the farmers is the group community themselves. There are many Thai farmers who suffer from the use of chemical fertilizer and chemical pesticide. Some farmers suspect that these chemical products are the cause of their illness and the cause of the ruination of the earth and many farm insects. So these farmers stop using chemical products and try to use some organic fertilizer and herbal pesticide instead. But they can’t do it for a long time because they face the pressure from the group community. Whenever any farmer stops using chemical products, other farmers in the same village will call that farmer “stupid” or “crazy”. The Thai farmers who understand the cause of the problem cannot stand being called like that from other villagers for a long time, so they have to start using chemical products again. It is very ironic, it is very sad, but it is true. The Thai farmers who are clever and intelligent are called “stupid” and “crazy” by other Thai farmers. The rural group communities don’t want anyone to behave differently. But by not allowing anyone to behave differently, they are destroying themselves little by little.

Fortunately, some people try to help solving the problems. Now there are many farming schools spreading around Thailand to teach farmers to stop using chemical products. These schools use the strategy that they must teach a “group” of farmers in each village. They can’t teach only several farmers in each village, because these several farmers would not be able to behave differently from other farmers in the same village for a long time. But when a group of farmers behave differently from other farmers, the farmers in the same group can help support each other and thus they won’t feel too pressured from their narrow-minded communities. After a while, they will be able to prove to their communities that by behaving differently, they can be successful in growing rice, improving the earth, and improving the ecological system.

14.WHERE THE HAPPINESS? (2007, Jenjira Tanasilpkul, A+/A) 7.33 min
This film is like a cute advertisement. It tells the story of a girl who hates her boring job and boring, repetitive life, until she learns to look at the bright side of life. The comedic acting of the leading actress is perfect.

15.GING-NAAK (2007, Surachet Choodech, A+/A) 15 min
This film is about a girl who tries to cure her ill grandmom by using some parts of a magic tree. The cinematography is great. The technical aspects of this film look perfect for me.

16.NGAO MUED (LIGHT IN THE BACK) (2007, Naddawan Sittilertprasit, A+/A) 10 min
This film is about a boy who is so addicted to videogame that he causes some troubles. His mother tries to stop him. She goes to the videogame shop to look for him. Then the mother starts playing the videogame with her son out of curiosity. Will she become addicted too?

17.THE THIN WHITE LINE (2007, Prachuab Palitpolkarnpim, A+/A) 25.3 min
The story of this film is like a soap opera, but fortunately, the film is not too melodramatic or too sentimental. It’s about a boy and a girl living in the same house. They fall in love with each other, but their love faces the big obstacles from the secret of their parents.

18.LONELY HEARTS (2006, Todd Robinson, A)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0441774/
I like Alice Krige and Jared Leto in this film very much.

19.THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (2007, Paul Greengrass, A)
Very exciting.

20.RATATOUILLE (2007, Brad Bird, A)

21.HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (2007, David Yates, A)
Obviously my most favorite among the Potter series. I think the fighting scene in this film is as exciting as the one in QUEEN OF THE DAMNED (2002, Michael Rymer, A+)

22.NEON: EPISODE I (2007, Nathan Homsap + Dhan Lhaow, A) 22 min
I don’t understand this film at all in the first viewing. Is this film a sci-fi? Will there be a sequel? If I don’t understand it wrongly, I think this film seems like the beginning of a sci-fi about alien invasion. But there is no alien yet in this film. The film seems to tell a story about three guys living in the same house. There is a strange sound effect attacking the ears of the viewers all though the film, and I love this sound effect very much.

This film seems to be very different from other cult films directed by Nathan Homsap + Dhan Lhaow that I saw in the past. But I think this film is still very interesting. The tone of this film seems to be serious, not as funny and playful as other films by these directors. But this film is still as weird.

I think the links below might be connected to the directors of this film.

These directors also make SLURPY BOY, which is a dogme film number 155.

23.LITTLE CHILDREN (2006, Todd Field, A)
I don’t like the ending of this film.

24.PAH AND WENDY (2007, Megan Cossey, A) 14 min
This is a documentary about Thai lesbians.

25.30 DAYS OF MY GRANDMOM (2007, Ormjai Bussabong, A) 10.3 min
A family documentary. There’s nothing extraordinary about this grandmom. This film is just an expression of love from a granddaughter. And this kind of love, though ordinary, is always wonderful.

26.THE WITNESS (2007, Romrawin Chumjean, A) 10 min
This film is about a woman who witnesses something looking like a crime, so she bravely decides to find out what really happens. The film is quite exciting and unpredictable.

27.2:29 (2006, Ruttikarn Jojaidee + Sandusit Glin-iam, A/A-) 30 min

28.KHUU RAET (THE ODD COUPLE) (2007, Nopparat Puttarattanamanee, A-)
I like the telephone operator scenes very much.

29.STORY OF 2549 (2007, Komjak Tongjib, A-) 1.3 min, animation

30.LIFESTYLE ART PROJECT – THAILAND: THE ART OF A TRAVEL EXPERIENCE (2007, Steven P. Perkins, A-) 26 min
This is a documentary about the working process of an American artist who used many things he found in Thailand as inspiration for his artworks. What I like the most in this film is the connecting of the scenes depicting the things he found and his artworks.

31.MY STORY (2007, Puwanes Atiganit + Nattachai Pakdeerach, A-) 15.48 min
A boy can see the event in the future about the death of his girlfriend, so he tries to prevent it. I think this film is fine, though a little bit too predictable.

32.VIDEO CLIP (2007, Pakpoom Wongjinda, A-/B+)
I like the raincoat scene very much, but I don’t like the ending.

33.TAM KWAM SANGOB (STOP MISSION) (2007, Ekarach Glinmontha, B+) 6 min
I saw this film on the fourth of August, but now I can’t remember what this film is about. I’m ashamed of my memory.

34.BECAUSE I SAID SO (2007, Michael Lehmann, B-)
What happened to Michael Lehmann who directed HEATHERS? I think Diane Keaton is fine in this film. The boys are very handsome. The conversation scenes are quite good, but I hate the story.

This is a photo of Gabriel Macht, the leading actor of BECAUSE I SAID SO.

อันนี้เป็นดีวีดี SUPERNATURAL – THE FIRST SEASON ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 6 แผ่น

synopsis from http://www.amazon.com/

“This television drama is about two brothers, Sam and Dean, who were raised by their father, John, to hunt and kill all things that go "bump in the night" after his wife, Mary, was murdered by something supernaturally evil when the boys were young. 22 years later the brothers set out on a journey, fighting evil along the way, to find their recently missing father who, when they finally meet up with, reveals he knows what killed their mother, a demon, and has found a way to track and kill it. Meanwhile, Sam starts to develop frightening abilities that include death visions, visions of people dying before it actually happens. These visions are somehow connected to the demon who murdered his mother and it's mysterious plans that seem to be all about Sam. When their father dies striking a deal with the very same devil that had killed his wife, the brothers, now alone and without their mentor, are determined to finish the crusade their father started. But disturbing revelations about Sam's part in the demon's apocalyptic plans are presented when John's dying last words to Dean are revealed.”

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (A)

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN BIOSCOPE WEBBOARD
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=367.0

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (2007, David Yates, A)

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX

KRZYSZTOF ZANUSSI AND THE CRISIS OF FAITH

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN GIRISH SHAMBU’S BLOG:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2007/08/bergman.html

My most favorite Bergman’s film is THE SILENCE (1963). The reason is just because it portrays a universe to which my emotions belong, or it is this film which best conveys my feelings. I also love THE HOURS AND TIMES (1991, Christopher Munch), which refers to THE SILENCE.

Jesse, I don’t know if you are interested in films about the crisis of faith or not. But if you are interested in this theme, I strongly recommend you watch some films by Krzysztof Zanussi, particularly IMPERATIVE (1982), LIFE IS A FATAL SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (2000), and THE SUPPLEMENT (2002). I guess THE DEATH OF A PROVINCIAL (1966, Zanussi) might also concerns some questions about faith, but I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. Zanussi’s films are very hard to find in Bangkok. However, I think Zanussi’s films are as thought-provoking as Bergman’s films, though less emotional than Bergman’s.

MOST DESIRABLE ACTOR -- IVAN FENYO

BLACK FOREST (http://www.blackforests.blogspot.com/ ) left a comment in my blog here:
http://celinejulie.blogspot.com/2007/07/best-of-times-2002-chang-tso-chi-aa.html

This is my reply:

I’m very glad you like Fan Wing. I haven’t noticed how he wore his boxer. You have very keen eyes for this kind of thing.

I feel sad that you haven’t seen many films in this film festival, because if you had seen it, you might have provided us with your precious list of MOST DESIRABLE ACTORS like the list you made for the film festival in October 2006.

Because you can’t give us your list this time, I think I have to do it by myself.

MOST DESIRABLE ACTORS FOR BANGKOK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 2007

1.Ivan Fenyo – CHILDREN OF GLORY (2006, Krisztina Goda, Hungary, A-/B+)

--I think it’s a little bit funny that my most desirable actor in the festival, Ivan Fenyo, stars in my least favorite film in the festival, CHILDREN OF GLORY. Things like this used to happen once in the World Film Festival of Bangkok in October 2003. In that festival, my most desirable actor is Aki Avni, who stars in THE RETURN FROM INDIA (2002, Menahem Golan, Israel, F), which is not only my least favorite film in the festival, but is also one of my least favorite (or most hated) films of all time.

A FILM WHICH UNDERSTANDS MY SOUL

BLACK FOREST (http://www.blackforests.blogspot.com/ ) left a comment in my blog here:
http://celinejulie.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/most-fav-film-of-2007-so-far-cry-in-silence/#comment-336

This is Celinejulie’s reply:

Thank you very much for your comment, Black Forest.

--Black Forest, do you remember ANGEL’S FALL (2005, Semih Kaplanoglu, Turkey, A++++++++++), a film which you love very much? I just knew that Kaplanoglu has a new film called EGG (2007), which is very interesting. EGG is described as minimalist, metaphysical, and philosophical.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1021004/

I just knew about EGG from UNSPOKEN CINEMA’S BLOG:
http://unspokencinema.blogspot.com/2006/10/chronology.html

--I haven’t seen FULL METAL JACKET, but after seeing CRY IN SILENCE, I thought about a French film called I FOR ICARUS (1979, Henri Verneuil, A+). In this film, the protagonist is told about an experiment on human behaviors. The volunteers for this experiment are divided into two groups. One group of volunteers will be sitting on a chair and will be hurt by a little electricity running through the chair. The other group of volunteers will control the volume of the electricity used in hurting the ones on the chair. The experiment boss will give an order to the electricity controller to gradually increase the volume of the electricity, while the volunteer on the chair will start begging, crying, screaming, because the pain is increasing to an unbearable degree.

However, the volunteers on the chair are the fake ones. The real volunteers who control the electricity don’t know this fact. The real volunteers think they are really hurting someone on the chair. The purpose of this experiment is to observe how willing people are in accepting the orders from the tyrant. Different people react differently. Some real volunteers keep on doing what the experiment boss tells them. They keep on increasing the volume of the electricity and don’t care how painful others people will be. But other real volunteers don’t tolerate unjustified orders. When these volunteers see that what they do can hurt other volunteers, they stop doing it. They tell the experiment boss, “No, I won’t do it.” These people are the ones who are ready and willing to stand up against tyranny.

Why does CRY IN SILENCE make me think about I FOR ICARUS? It is because one sister in CRY IN SILENCE reminds me of a kind of volunteers in I FOR ICARUS—the kind of volunteers, or citizens, who are willing to obey orders, even if the orders are unjustified, cruel, inhuman, or come from tyrants. Unfortunately, many people in Thailand seem to behave like this sister in CRY IN SILENCE.

--I just noticed that Mylene Jampanoi, the leading actress of VALLEY OF FLOWERS (2006, Pan Nalin, A-/B+), also plays a supporting role in CRY IN SILENCE. She plays the eldest sister.

--CRY IN SILENCE also reminds me of other French films which show intense relationships between family members. So I recommend that CRY IN SILENCE be shown with the following French films:

1.SOUND AND FURY (1988, Jean-Claude Brisseau, A+)

2.MON FILS A MOI (2006, Martial Fougeron, A+)

3.FEAR, LITTLE HUNTER (2004, Laurent Achard, A+)
This is a short film.

4.THE DEVILS (2002, Christophe Ruggia, A+)

5.I STAND ALONE (1998, Gaspar Noe, A)

--I just chose CRY IN SILENCE to be my most favorite film for July 2007. To choose my most favorite film for July was very difficult, because I saw many great films in July, and there are at least four films I saw in July which I love wholeheartedly. These four films are:

1.CRY IN SILENCE

2.KWAM LUKLUN NAI NGAN RUENREANG (AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY) (2007, Prap Boonpan, A+)

3.BERLIN – EXERCISES IN NINE PARTS: DREAMING UNDERWATER OF THINGS AFAR (1975, Rebecca Horn, A+)

4.VIDEO 50 (1978, Robert Wilson, A+)

An excerpt from VIDEO 50 can be watched here:
http://www.medienkunstnetz.de/artist/wilson/biography/video/1/

It is hard for me to choose my most favorite among these four films. All of them are very great and shouldn’t be compared to one another. From an aesthetic viewpoint, Rebecca Horn’s film and Robert Wilson’s film might be more interesting than the other two films. When comparing between these two video arts, Rebecca Horn’s film made me feel more ecstatic while watching it, but Robert Wilson’s film sticks in my mind longer than Horn’s film. I can’t forget the image of a chair hanging in the sky and the duck scene in VIDEO 50.

AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY might be one of the best Thai films and one of the best political films I have ever seen. This film seems to understand the problems of Thailand very, very well, and it shows me how to change my perspective, how to think differently, and how to improve myself as a member in society.

To choose my most favorite film among these four films is like to choose between the great artists, someone who really understands the country and the people, and someone who understands my soul. So in the end I choose someone who understands my soul. “CRY IN SILENCE” IS THE FILM WHICH UNDERSTANDS MY SOUL.

BOYS AROUND THE WORLD SHOW EVERYTHING

A piece of news about Thai censorship, written by Kong Rithdee in Bangkok Post, can be read in the link below:
http://www.bangkokpost.com/030807_Realtime/03Aug2007_real11.php

-------------------------------------------

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE’S BLOG:
http://memoriesofthefuture.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/and-then-one-day-you-kissed-me/

--I haven’t seen PARIS VU PAR…(1965), but I have seen a segment of PARIS SEEN BY…TWENTY YEARS AFTER (1984). The segment I saw is called I’M HUNGRY, I’M COLD, directed by Chantal Akerman, and starring Maria de Medeiros and Pascale Salkin as two poor lesbians wandering the streets of Paris, struggling so hard to survive. What is very impressive about this short film is that the dialogues between the two girls are not spoken in a realistic way, but are spoken like poetry. I really love this film. I think Zach Campbell (Elusive Lucidity) also saw this one. The other five directors participating in PARIS SEEN BY…TWENTY YEARS AFTER are Bernard Dubois, Philippe Garrel, Frederic Mitterand, Vincent Nordon, and Philippe Venault.

--Why Danish boys in particular? It’s because Nicolaj Coster-Waldau is from Denmark. I think he is one of the most desirable actors. He is in WIMBLEDON (A-), FIREWALL (A-/B+), ENIGMA (A), BENT (A+) and THE BOUNCER. Nikolaj Lie Kaas, another handsome actor, is also from Denmark. He is in RECONSTRUCTION (A+), MURK, ADAM’S APPLE, BROTHERS, and OPEN HEARTS.

Hahaha. Just kidding. The real reason for DANISH BOYS SHOW EVERYTHING is just because I want to mock the real omnibus film DANISH GIRLS SHOW EVERYTHING (1996).

If you don’t prefer Danish boys, I think maybe the film project should be changed to BOYS AROUND THE WORLD SHOW EVERYTHING. And maybe these five directors can be added to the film project:

16.Isaac Julien (UK)

17.Onir (INDIA)

18.Constantine Giannaris (GREECE)

19.Cui Zi’en (CHINA)

20.Bruce La Bruce (Canada)

--I think Gurinder Chadha’s segment in PARIS I LOVE YOU is very romantic and lovely, while reflecting social problems at the same time. I think this short film should be shown together with YASEMIN (1988, Hark Bohm, West Germany, A-/B+) and AE FOND KISS (2004, Ken Loach, A+), because all these films share more or less the same theme. Gurinder Chadha’s film is the most optimistic one among these three, though.

--Bangkok, my city, also has an omnibus film made for it 7 years ago. It’s called BANGKOK 2000 FRAMES. In this project, many Thai filmmakers were asked to make a film about Bangkok using only 2000 frames from a film reel. I can’t remember many segments in this film, but my most favorite segment is called BANGKOK BEAUTY. It is directed by Wisit Sasanatieng (TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER). In the first shot of this film, viewers will see a plastic bag dancing in the wind on the street, very similar to that famous shot from the film AMERICAN BEAUTY. But a few seconds later, the camera will zoom out from that plastic bag, and the viewers will see plenty of plastic bags also dancing in the wind on the street of Bangkok. The film is very funny. Bangkok is really a dirty city.

--I just would like to add a little thought on omnibus films. I think what is interesting about omnibus films is that many ones were made to respond to catastrophes, mishaps, or injustice. This kind of project shows the unity of many filmmakers in fighting for a good cause. For example:

1.TSUNAMI

2.NANG SAMANCHAN (It is a Thai omnibus film consisting of 12 segments. The purpose of this film is to find a peaceful way to solve the problem of the violence in the South of Thailand.)

3.11’09”01 – SEPTEMBER 11

4.GERMANY IN AUTUMN (1978, 11 directors including Alexander Kluge, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Edgar Reitz, Bernhard Sinkel, Volker Schlondorff)

5.FAR FROM VIETNAM (1967, Joris Ivens, William Klein, Claude Lelouch, Chris Marker, Alain Resnais, Agnes Varda, Jean-Luc Godard). The purpose of this film is to show sympathy for the North Vietnamese army. I think the directors in this project can be called THE DREAM TEAM.

6.ALLERZIELEN (2005, many Dutch directors including Eddy Terstall and Mijke de Jong). The purpose of this film is to respond to the murder of Theo van Gogh.

OMNIBUS FILMS

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE’S BLOG:
http://memoriesofthefuture.wordpress.com/2007/07/25/and-then-one-day-you-kissed-me/

--I’m glad you like Emily Mortimer. I got very interested in her after I saw her in BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS (2003, Stephen Fry, A+). She really shines in this movie, though I think Fenella Woolgar is the one who steals many scenes in it. Emily Mortimer is also great in DEAR FRANKIE (2004, Shona Auerbach, A)

--You are the first person that I know who loves Wes Craven’s segment.

--To tell you the truth, I like Bruno Podalydes’ segment, though not as much as many other segments. And I really love one film directed by Bruno Podalydes. It is DIEU SEUL ME VOIT (ONLY GOD SEES ME) (1998, Bruno Podalydes, A), which is a romantic comedy. What I like very much in DIEU SEUL ME VOIT is that it seems to have some political aspects, which is hard to find in other romantic comedies. In this film, the hero has three lovers—a nurse, a documentary director (Jeanne Balibar), and a policewoman. These three women have to answer the same question about Cuba, and these three gave different answers. I don’t think I truly understand the political subtext in ONLY GOD SEES ME, but at least this film made me think a lot about the political subtext after seeing it, instead of just making me feel good and then disappearing from my mind very soon like other romantic comedies. I don’t know if I can convince you to change your mind about not watching Bruno Podalydes’ films, but at least I have tried.

These are the segments in PARIS, I LOVE YOU (A) in my preferential order:

1.14TH ARRONDISSEMENT (Alexander Payne, A+)

This segment also surprises me a lot. I like SIDEWAYS (2004, A+), but feel so-so about ABOUT SCHMIDT (2002, Alexander Payne, B+). However, I love this segment ten times more than SIDEWAYS. This segment is quite funny and touching. The character played by Margo Martindale in this segment reminds me of the heroine of SHIRLEY VALENTINE (1989, Lewis Gilbert, A+), because both of them are middle-aged women traveling alone, and their travel might lead to their self-liberation.

2. LOIN DU 16EME (Walter Salles, A+)

This segment makes me feel very sad.

3. LES MARAIS (Gus Van Sant, A+)

4. QUARTIER DE LA MADELEINE (Vincenzo Natali, A+)

5. PLACE DES FETES (Oliver Schmitz, A+)

This segment also makes me feel very sad.

6. QUARTIER DES ENFANTS ROUGES (Olivier Assayas, A+)

7. TUILERIES (Joel & Ethan Cohen, A+/A)

8. TOUR EIFFEL (Sylvain Chomet, A+/A)

9. QUARTIER LATIN (Gerard Depardieu + Frederic Aubertin, A)

10. QUAIS DE SEINE (Gurinder Chadha, A)

11. PERE-LACHAISE (Wes Craven, A)

12. PARC MONCEAU (Alfonso Cuaron, A)

13. MONTMARTRE (Bruno Podalydes, A/A-)

14. PORTE DE CHOISY (Christopher Doyle, A-)

15. FAUBOURG SAINT-DENIS (Tom Tykwer, A-)

16. PLACE DE VICTOIRES (Nobuhiro Suwa, A-)

17. PIGALLE (Richard LaGravenese, A-)

18. BASTILLE (Isabel Coixet, B+)

I’m quite surprised, in a negative way, with Suwa and Coixet’s segments, because I like their feature films very much. I saw 2 DUO (1997, Nobuhiro Suwa, A+) and MY LIFE WITHOUT ME (2003, Isabel Coixet, A+). Both these films touch me so strongly, while their short segments cannot.

--As you know I like to make lists. So in this case I make a list of omnibus films.

MY FAVORITE OMNIBUS FILMS

1.ID SWISS (1999)
This is a film about the multinational aspect of Switzerland. Two from seven segments stand out: MIXED UP by Nadia Fares, and TRAIN FANTOME by Thomas Thuemena. MIXED UP is a surreal, poetic film about North African women in Switzerland, while TRAIN FANTOME is a documentary which dares to ask the question “Is it possible that there can be a war between French-speaking Swiss and German-speaking Swiss?” To my surprise, some interviewees answer “Yes”.

2.TALES OF TERROR (2004, Japan)
Many people hate this horror film which consists of 8 segments, but I really love this film, especially the two segments directed by Kosuke Suzuki. These two segments really defy explanation.

3.TUBE TALES (1999)
This film consists of eleven segments concerning subway trains. My two most favorite are the ones directed by Ewan McGregor and Charles McDougall.

4.11’09”01 – SEPTEMBER 11 (2002)
My two most favorite segments are the ones directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Claude Lelouch.

5.EROTIQUE (1994, Lizzie Borden, Clara Law, Ana Maria Magalhaes, Monika Treut, A+)

6.ABOUT LOVE (2005, Ten Shimoyama (A-), Yee Chin-yen (A+), Zhang Yibai (A))

7.SPIRITS OF THE DEAD (1968, Roger Vadim (A-), Louis Malle (A), Federico Fellini (A))

8.TALES OF KISH (1999, Abolfazl Jalili, Naser Taghvai, Mohsen Makhmalbaf)

9. EGG (This is a Thai omnibus film consisting of 7 segments, including the one directed by Michael Shaowanasai)

10.TSUNAMI (This is a Thai omnibus film consisting of 13 segments. My most favorite are the ones directed by Sompot Chidgasornpongse, Sonthaya Subyen, and Pramote Sangsorn.)

MY WISH LIST FOR OMNIBUS FILMS

1.THE HEIRESS (1982, Viviane Berthommier, Daniele Dubroux, Marie-Christine Questerbert, Helma Sanders-Brahms, Ula Stoeckl, Jutta Brueckner)

2.DANISH GIRLS SHOW EVERYTHING (1996, directed by 18 directors, including Mani Kaul, Dusan Makavejev, Monika Treut, Zhang Yuan, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Mika Kaurismaki)

3.LOST AND FOUND (2005, Stefan Arsenijevic, Nadejda Koseva, Mait Laas, Kornel Mundruczo, Cristian Mungiu, Jasmila Zbanic)

4.STATE OF THE NATION: AUSTRIA IN SIX CHAPTERS (2002, Barbara Albert, Michael Glawogger, Ulrich Seidl, Michael Sturminger)

5.VISIONS OF EUROPE (2004, directed by 26 directors, including Fatih Akin, Barbara Albert, Sharunas Bartas, Christoffer Boe, Constantine Giannaris, Theo van Gogh, Peter Greenaway, Aki Kaurismaki, Damjan Kozole, Bela Tarr, and Jan Troell)

FILMS WITH LONG CONVERSATION

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN BIOSCOPE WEBBOARD

http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=367.0

ตอบคุณ TAXI__ANON

1.ONE TRUE THING (2007, Vichart Somkaew, A+)

2.BELLE TOUJOURS (2006, Manoel de Oliveira, A+)

3.DEATH PROOF (2007, Quentin Tarantino, A+)

MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (1981, Louis Malle)

Synopsis of MY DINNER WITH ANDRE from amazon.com
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305069743/imdb-adbox/

“The sheer audacity of My Dinner with Andre drew throngs of curious filmgoers who made the film the most talked-about art-house hit of 1981. After all, who'd ever heard of a movie consisting of nearly two hours of nonstop dinner conversation? Ah... but this isn't just any conversation--it's the kind of mesmerizing, soul-searching, life-affirming exploration that we feel privileged to listen to, and with unobtrusive style, director Louis Malle invites us to eavesdrop to our hearts' and minds' content. The film was written by two New Yorkers at the dinner table, noted playwright-actor Wallace Shawn and well-known stage director Andre Gregory, who essentially play themselves. They taped their conversations for several weeks and Shawn gradually shaped them into a scripted conversation, but you'd never know it from watching the movie. The talk flows and flows until you're captivated by Gregory's stories of world travel and spiritual quests in Poland, India, Tibet, the Sahara desert... the tales of a soul-searcher who'd dropped out of the theater world to rediscover his zest for living. Shawn plays the skeptic, the voice of reason, his feet on the ground but his own mind willing to soar. The cumulative effect of this conversation is almost hypnotic, and certainly plays into our eternal appetite for storytelling. Both primal and sophisticated, witty and profound, My Dinner with Andre is a film that can be savored over time, offering new revelations with each viewing as the listener-viewer develops his or her own appreciation of life's great mysteries. --Jeff Shannon”

ONE TRUE THING (2007, Vichart Somkaew, A+++++)

FILMS SEEN ON MONDAY 30 JULY 2007

1.ONE TRUE THING (2007, Vichart Somkaew, A+)
80 min
This documentary is certainly one of the best Thai gay films. One of the thing I like in this film is the uninterrupted conversation scenes.

2.OUR WAVES (2007, Tulpop Saencharoen, A+)
12 min
At first I thought the film shows us the ocean, but when the camera zooms out, it is revealed that what I see is just a river. Then the film shows us many short scenes of friends doing various activities together.

I just saw two films by Tulpop Saencharoen. The other one is "___" (2007, A+). But I already believe he is one of the most interesting Thai directors in 2007. His films defy explanation, or maybe they need no explanation.

3.LIVE IN BANGKOK (2007, Unnop Saguanchat, A+)
7 min
This is a documentary about likay, a kind of Thai traditional stage play.

4.CHILD OF SIN (2007, Seri Lachonabot, A+/A)
28 min
I like the cinematography of this gay film very much. The dancing scene in the middle of the film is quite impressive.

5.AJARN KUAD (2007, Nattha Homsap + Tan Pleotianyingtawee, A+/A)
22.23 min
This is a cult film by the duo cult film directors. I like the narrative structure and the black humor in films directed by these two very much.

6.WASTELAND (2007, Megan Cossey, A)
13 min
This is a documentary about garbage gleaners.

7.CHANGE (2007, Wiras Yangyuen, A)
6.54 min

8.SHADOW OF A MAN (2007, Attapol Pamakho, Sunida Orndeesawasdi, A)
12.58 min
This is a dramatic film with some morally-challenged situations involving a monk and narcotics.

9.THE PROLOUGE (2007, Wannisa Iamla-ong, A)
16 min
This is a romantic film about a very shy guy. I'm not sure if the title of this film is misspelled or not.

10.TO FATHER (2006, Tossapol Tiptinnakorn, A)
This is a story about a son with an Alzheimer father. I can't follow the film in some parts, and I don't quite understand the ending. But I think the film conveys very well the suffering of the son caused unintentionally by the father.

11.THE DAY BEFORE REVOLUTION (2007, Pas Pattanakamjorn, A)
21.35 min
Two male friends talk, quarrel, and play together. I like the relaxed tone in some scenes of the film, especially the scene on the rooftop of an apartment building.

12.DEEPLY IN YOU (2007, Pison Suwanpakdee, A)
4.3 min
An experimental film showing some abstract, beautiful, arresting images.

13.MY SPACE (2007, Nakorn Chidcharoen, A-)
35 min
This romantic film deals with some metaphysical problems. I like some ideas in this film and the fact that in some parts of this film the viewers will not be sure if the scene is real or just a dream.

14.2520 (2007, Wiras Yangyuen, A-)
1.22 min
Another experimental film from Wiras Yangyuen, who is one of the most interesting Thai filmmakers in 2007 in my personal point of view. I don't think my wavelength is the same as the wavelengths in his films. His films don't make me feel very strongly, but at least these films make me want to see them again and again.

15.HERO (2007, Tanatat Sakulkunatip, A-)
29 min
I think the film is too long, and I don't usually like films with lovely children or films which affirm family values. But I still think this film has some useful lessons for some viewers. The film itself has some lovely charms of its own.

16.MUN PEN CHENNAN ENG (IT'S JUST LIKE THAT) (2007, Nichapoom Chaianant, A-)
18.02 min
This is a documentary with three parts: funeral worker, old people, janitor. I like the janitor's part the most. It shows some idiocy of the bureaucracy system in university.

17.CIRCLE (2007, Sittisak Jiampajamarn, A-)
2.10 min
This is a beautiful computer animation.

18.WORTH? (2007, Hasaya Rimpanawes, A-)
3.08 min
This film shows how different people react differently to the same piece of paper.

19.THE TIME CHANGE (2007, Tawiswakorn Siangkaharat, A-)
10.53 min
This film is about the unity of Thai people with different religions. I may not like the message or the purpose of this film, but I quite like the early part of this film which uses some songs in a very haunting way.

20.SPIN (2007, Nareerat Boontham, A-)
15 min
I like some ideas in this film. The film is about girls killing each other in an apartment building in order to be the one who can use a washing machine.

Because this film deals with the violence caused by something so trivial, this film somehow reminds me of a real event. My friend who works at the airport told me that the airport hires cleaning ladies from two companies. And then one day the cleaning ladies from one company fought against the ones from the other company. The real cause of this war is just because they couldn't agree on how to use Vixol, or some cleaning products, to clean the toilets.

21.WAN HANG KWAMRAK (VALENTINE'S DAY) (2007, Chalermwut Jarunchol, B+)
This is a film which affirms family values.

22.STEP BY STEP (2007, Worapong Kanasa, B+)
15 min
This crime film tells the story in an interesting way.

23.301-302 (2007, Watcharee Wongtanuwat)
17 min
I don't know if this film really has sound or not, but it was shown as a silent film, maybe due to some technical problems. The film deals with a fatal love triangle between two girls and a boy.

THE INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL OF AERIAL VIDEOGRAPHY

THIS IS MY COMMENT IN BIOSCOPE WEBBOARD
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=367.0

TAXI…ANON

THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL OF AERIAL VIDEOGRAPHY FOR WEDDING PRESENTATION

ABDUCTION: THE MEGUMI YOKOTA STORY (2006, Patty Kim + Chris Sheridan, A)

BALLAD OF A SOLDIER (1959, Grigori Chukhrai, A+)

TEACHER...TEACHER (2007, Panuwat Nilrak, A+++++)

FILMS SEEN ON SUNDAY 29 JULY 2007

NOTE:1.Most of them are Thai short films.

2.I don’t know the official English titles of most of the films, so the English titles listed here are just what I translated from the Thai titles.

3.I listed the year of most of the films here as 2007, because I think most of them are made in 2007, but I know a few of them might be made before that. So I apologize in advance if some parts of my information are wrong.

1.KWAM LUKLUN KHONG NGAN RUENREANG (AN INCONVENIENCE IN A HAPPY PARTY) (2007, Prap Boonpan, A+)
28.51 min

2.KRU KRAB…KRU (TEACHER…TEACHER) (2007, Panuwat Nilrak, A+)
30 min
I like the ending of this film very much. This film begins like a documentary about rural children, but ends with a dark, thought-provoking twist.

3.KHANG BUNG FAI (RURAL ROCKET COMPETITION) (2007, Uruphong Raksasad, A+)
18.3 min
Uruphong, who directed STORIES FROM THE NORTH, comes back with one of the most beautiful, “uplifting” Thai films I have ever seen. I just love the picture of a clear blue sky in this film. This film is a pure documentary, unlike TO INFINITY AND BEYOND (2004, Sompot Chidgasornpongse, A+), which deals with the same kind of Thai rural festivals, but portrays it in a more complex way.

4.KHAI JEOW (OMELETTE) (2007, Pitak Ruengrojsin, A+)
15 min
Actually I don't like many things in this didactic film, especially the second half. But I give it A+ because some of the dialogues spoken by the mother are the funniest I have ever heard. It begins with a mother scolding her daughter for not closing the water tap, blaming her action as the cause of the extinction of some species of mountain deer.

5.KID TUENG POR (MISS YOU, FATHER) (2007, Tip Saetang, Teera Prachumkhong, Chatchai Charntanawong, A+)
9 min
This film is about a son who tries to write a letter to his dead dad in heaven. The film has some funny parts, though in the end it is quite poignant.

6.WASABI (2007, Asit Wangsuekul, A+)
26 min
This film is about a Japanese student who has to live with a Thai host family which is very crazy about Japan. The film is quite funny and seems to mock many cliche found in Japanese films and TV series.

7. THE INSTRUCTIONAL MANUAL OF AERIAL VIDEOGRAPHY FOR WEDDING PRESENTATION (2007, Decha Piyawatkoon, A+)
17.58 min
This is a documentary.

8.FUN…WANG WON (2007, Pasit Sajjapong, A+)
20 min
I like the slowness of this film very much. It is about a male university librarian who falls in love with a female university student. The tracking shot inside a library is quite impressive.

9.DARA (2007, Surasak Wanwong, A+)
15 min
I don’t think I understand this film, but it made me think a lot, though I found no answer.

10.HAAB (2007, Tikamporn Poopunna, A+/A)
20 min
This is a semi-documentary about a street vendor and her son. I like the idea that the film is not a pure documentary, but includes some fictional scenes which might portray the feelings of the son.

11.ENERGY (2007, Wiras Yangyuen, A)
4.04 min
A video art about electricity. I’m quite impressed with Wiras Yangyuen’s films I saw this year. They are experimental films which are not very exciting in my point of view, but they are still impressive.

12.SYSTEM OF A DOWN (2007, Ekapoom Hansapiromchoke, A)
2.58 min
This is a funny music video.

13.SECRET (2006, Monchai Chatbamrungsuk, A)
14.45 min
This is a film about an Alzheimer patient.

14.CHANGE (2007, Winai Kijjaroen, A)
3.48 min
This is a lovely animation.

15.PEDAN (CEILING) (2007, Saroch Apichatkulchai, Sapitcha Srisomboon, A)
8.25 min
This film only shows us the ceiling of a room, but we can hear some characters talking and arguing. I can’t quite follow what the characters are talking about, but I like the idea of this film.

16.LOOK AT ME! (2007, Tanwarin Sukhapisit, A)
5.3 min
I like the idea of this film, which shows a medium shot of a room seen from outside the house among the darkness. We can glimpse this room only when lightning appears.

17.SCOOP (2006, Woody Allen, A/A-)

18.TICHILA (2007, Chatchai Ngamsirimongkhonchai, A-)
5 min
This is a beautiful animation music video. Chatchai Ngamsirimongkhonchai also directed HUMAN DESIRES (2006, A+), FRIEND (2006, A-) and STARLIGHT (2006, A-). All of them are animation music videos.

19.THE END OF TAKSIN ERA (2007, Nattapong Okapanom + Ittipol Ayup, A-)
71 min
This is a TV documentary which is full of useful information about the bad deeds of Taksin Shinawatra, but I prefer to watch a film which dares to criticize this current government than this film.

20.BEFORE…AFTER (2007, Suchart Makawimal, A-)
9.06 min
This film begins unpromisingly. It seems at first like a film with a message “Don’t commit suicide”. Fortunately, the film turns out to be more complex than that.

21.TWO WORDS AND ONE WAY (2007, Nattaporn Wongjaksu, B)
9.27 min
I think this film might be made by a high school student. I think the idea of this film is good. It shows the quarrel between two girls up until the middle of the film. Then the film seems to be rewinded back to the beginning. However, I think the film is too predictable.
