ขอบคุณคุณ grappa มากค่ะสำหรับข้อมูลของมณเฑียร บุญมา เห็นภาพงานของเขาแล้วทำให้รู้สึกอยากดูมากๆ
พูดถึงศิลปินที่มีภรรยาตายเพราะมะเร็งแล้ว ก็เลยทำให้นึกถึง Elia Kazan ที่มีเมียชื่อ Barbara Loden ซึ่งเป็นผู้กำกับหนังดังเรื่อง WANDA (A++++++) ที่เสียชีวิตด้วยมะเร็ง โดยสิ่งที่น่าสนใจก็คือว่า Barbara Loden เสียชีวิตด้วยโรคมะเร็งขณะอายุ 48 ปี ส่วน Elia Kazan นั้น ตอนที่เขาอายุ 48 ปี เขาก็เคยมีอาการเจ็บที่ใต้กระดูกซี่โครง จนต้องไปหาหมอ แต่หมอบอกว่าอาการเจ็บนี้เกิดจาก “ความโกรธที่ไม่ได้ระบายออกมา”
เพิ่งอ่านเจอเรื่องนี้จากบทความของ Berenice Raynaud ใน SENSES OF CINEMA โดย Raynaud ตั้งข้อสังเกตว่า Loden เองนั้นก็เก็บกดความเจ็บปวดและความโกรธเอาไว้ภายในใจตัวเองด้วย เหมือนกับตัวละครนำหญิงในหนังเรื่อง WANDA ที่เธอกำกับ แต่เราก็ไม่รู้เหมือนกันว่าการที่เธอเก็บกดความเจ็บปวดเหล่านี้เอาไว้เกี่ยวข้องกับการที่เธอเป็นมะเร็งหรือเปล่า

คนดังอีกคนที่ตายด้วยมะเร็งคือ Susan Sontag ตอนนี้เห็น Jonathan Rosenbaum เพิ่งนำบทความที่เขาเขียนไว้อาลัยให้ Sontag มาแปะในเว็บไซท์ของเขาด้วย

--จำเนื้อเรื่องใน “ความสูญเสีย คำสั่ง จุดจบ” ไม่ค่อยได้เหมือนกัน ถ้าจำผิดดิฉันก็ต้องกราบขออภัยด้วย แต่ถ้าให้ดิฉันเดาเนื้อเรื่องคร่าวๆจากสิ่งที่พอจำได้เล็กๆน้อยๆ ดิฉันก็เดาว่าเนื้อเรื่องของหนังมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับกลุ่มคนไทยในเมืองนอก และตัวละครในหนังมีชื่อเกี่ยวข้องกับทีมฟุตบอล อย่างเช่น “หงส์” หรืออะไรทำนองนี้ หนังมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับผู้ชายคนนึงที่ติดหนี้พนันบอล ก็เลยถูกเจ้าหนี้บังคับให้หาเงินมาใช้หนี้ให้ได้ภายใน 3 ชั่วโมง เขาก็เลยไปจี้หญิงไทยคนนึง และฆ่าผู้หญิงคนนี้ตาย พร้อมกับขโมยเครื่องประดับของผู้หญิงคนนี้มา ต่อมาแฟนเก่าของผู้หญิงคนนี้ก็มาเจอศพของผู้หญิงคนนี้เข้า และพี่ชายของผู้หญิงคนนี้ก็มาเห็นฉากนั้นพอดี ก็เลยคิดว่าแฟนเก่าของน้องสาวฆ่าน้องสาวตาย เขาก็เลยฆ่าแฟนเก่าของน้องสาว หลังจากนั้นลูกหนี้พนันบอลก็นำเครื่องประดับไปมอบให้กับเจ้าหนี้ และถ้าดิฉันเข้าใจไม่ผิด เจ้าหนี้ก็คือพี่ชายของผู้หญิงที่ถูกฆ่าตายนั่นเอง พอเขาเห็นเครื่องประดับนั้นเข้า เขาก็เลยรู้ว่าความจริงเป็นอะไร และตัวเขาเองนั่นแหละที่เป็นต้นเหตุในทางอ้อมที่ทำให้น้องสาวถูกฆ่าตาย
--ชอบ “เพื่อนเณร” มากๆ เพราะรู้สึกว่าภาพในหนังมันให้ความรู้สึกที่ดีมากๆ แต่ขอสารภาพว่าตอนที่ดูหนังเรื่องนี้ นึกว่าเพื่อนของเณรพยายามจะขโมยทรัพย์สินของเณร ตอนแรกนึกว่าเพื่อนพยายามจะคลำหาเงินหรือทรัพย์สมบัติในตัวเณร พอได้ยินว่าคนอื่นๆมองว่าหนังเรื่องนี้เป็นแนว HOMOEROTIC ก็เลยพบว่าตัวเองเข้าใจหนังเรื่องนี้พลาดไปอย่างรุนแรง แต่ก็เลยทำให้ชอบหนังเรื่องนี้มากขึ้นไปอีก และรู้สึกอยากดูหนังเรื่องนี้รอบสองอย่างมากๆ

One thing I learned from these short films is that some films don’t reflect the real talent of the filmmakers at all. This is the case when some talented filmmakers have to make films to satisfy some professors, and the filmmakers have to conform to some rules or to make films about things in which the filmmakers are not interested at all.

BATMAN BEGINS VS. IRON MAN

ชอบ IRON MAN (A+/A) มากๆเหมือนกัน เพราะการแสดงของโรเบิร์ต ดาวนีย์ จูเนียร์ ที่ทำให้ตัวละครพระเอกในเรื่องนี้ดูเป็นมนุษย์ปุถุชนมากกว่าพระเอกในหนังซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ทั่วๆไป ดูหนังเรื่องนี้แล้วรู้สึกตะขิดตะขวงใจอยู่บ้างกับทัศนคติที่มีต่อตะวันออกกลาง และรู้สึกว่าหนังค่อนข้างใจดีกับพ่อค้าอาวุธมากไปหน่อย แต่ถ้าหากไม่ได้สนใจในจุดนี้แล้ว ก็จะรู้สึกว่าตัวเองรู้สึกเชื่อมโยงกับพระเอกในหนังเรื่องนี้ได้มากกว่าพระเอกในหนังซูเปอร์ฮีโร่เรื่องอื่นๆ
อย่างไรก็ดี ถ้าหากเทียบกับหนังซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ฟอร์มยักษ์ด้วยกันเองแล้ว โดยส่วนตัวก็รู้สึกชอบ BATMAN BEGINS (2005, Christopher Nolan, A+) มากกว่า เพราะชอบโทนและบรรยากาศใน BATMAN BEGINS มากกว่าบรรยากาศใน IRON MAN

งานชิ้นนี้ดูที่ VER GALLERY ค่ะ อยู่ในนิทรรศการชื่อ ALL OUR EVERYDAYS ซึ่งมีผลงานของคุณมณเฑียรมาแสดงหนึ่งชิ้น ชอบนิทรรศการนี้มาก เพราะมันเต็มไปด้วยสิ่งของที่ดูเผินๆเหมือนไม่ใช่งานศิลปะ แต่ดูเผินๆเหมือนเป็นเศษขยะ โดยเฉพาะงานของคุณมณเฑียรที่ทำให้ดิฉันนึกว่ามันเป็นแผ่นไม้กระดานเหลือใช้มาวางทิ้งๆไว้ แต่พอเข้าไปดูใกล้ๆถึงพบว่ามันไม่ใช่แผ่นไม้เหลือใช้ แต่เป็นภาพวาด
ไม่เคยได้ดูงานของคุณมณเฑียรมาก่อนหน้านี้เลย แต่ที่ดวงกมลฟิล์มเฮาส์เคยฉายหนังสารคดีสั้นเกี่ยวกับคุณมณเฑียรเรื่องนึง หนังสารคดีเรื่องนั้นกำกับโดยกมล เผ่าสวัสดิ์ และถ้าจำไม่ผิด หนังเรื่องนั้นถ่ายภาพโดยสถิตย์ ศัสตรศาสตร์
พูดถึงผลงานศิลปะแนวที่ดูคล้ายๆขยะอย่างนี้แล้ว ก็เลยนึกถึงศิลปินบางคนที่ได้ยินว่าทำงานคล้ายๆกันนี้ อย่างเช่น
1.Thea Djordjadze ซึ่งมีผลงานชิ้นนึงเป็น “หน้าต่างแกลเลอรี่ที่เปื้อนโคลนสกปรก”

FRAGRANCE OF THE WIND (2007, Chaiwat Wainsantia, A++++++++++)
THAI SHORT FILMS SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME ON 12-13 JULY 2008
One thing I learned from these short films is that some films don’t reflect the real talent of the filmmakers at all. This is the case when some talented filmmakers have to make films to satisfy some professors, and the filmmakers have to conform to some rules or to make films about things in which the filmmakers are not interested at all.
I will try to transcribe all these names into English when I have time.

WEERASAK SUYALA'S FILMOGRAPHY
My writing below is inspired by Filmsick’s love for Weerasak Suyala’s film:
Filmsick and I are very much impressed by the film KUEN PLEAW NAI SOI TRUAD (LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY) (2008, Weerasak Suyala, 15 min, A+++++), which we just saw on Saturday, July 12. I think it is very low-budget, very do-it-yourself, very anti-realistic, extremely hilarious. I think of it as a part of an unintentional trilogy which include WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007, James Gray, A) and RIVALS (2008, Jacques Maillot, A+/A). I saw these three films within the space of a month, and each of these three films features a pair of brothers—one is a criminal or belongs to the criminal world, the other is a good cop. Aesthetically, WE OWN THE NIGHT might be the best, and LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY might be the worst. But judging from my own pleasure, I like LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY the most. Maybe it is because this time I care for the kind of story I feel involved in, instead of caring for the aesthetics which I know nothing about. LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY presents a character who cares for virtue more than family. RIVALS also presents a character who sometimes care for virtue more than family. On the other hand, WE OWN THE NIGHT presents a character who stands up against the mafia, because the mafia hurt his family. Well, I have to confess that I have not much interest in this kind of character, though the film is extremely well-made. I would have cared very much for WE OWN THE NIGHT if it is about a guy who was born into a mafia family, but he decides to destroy his own family, because he cares for virtue. That’s the kind of character I love.
I tried to find information about Weerasak Suyala from the internet and from the brochures of the Thai Short Film Festival in the past. If I understand it correctly, Weerasak is a policeman who lives in Ubon Ratchatani, a northeastern province of Thailand. This policeman has directed short films since 2002. He also won an award in the Thai Short Film Festival in 2003. He is also an amateur writer and won an award for his writing, too. You can find some information about his literary prize in Thai here:

สิ่งหนึ่งที่น่าประทับใจมากๆในหนังเรื่องนี้ก็คือทุนสร้างของหนัง เพราะ ENDING CREDIT ตอนท้ายเรื่องบอกว่าหนังเกย์เรื่องนี้ได้รับทุนสร้างจากนายกองค์การบริหารตำบล... (ถ้าดูไม่ผิด) รู้สึกดีใจมากๆที่เดี๋ยวนี้อบต.ของประเทศไทยออกทุนสร้างหนังที่ใจกว้างอย่างนี้ ถ้าอบต.หลายๆแห่งทำอย่างนี้ก็คงจะดีมากๆ

POLL 26: SELF-REFLEXIVE
POLL 26: PROBABLY SELF-REFLEXIVE OR STORYTELLING-CONCERNED
My poll 26 is inspired by two new Thai short films I love—DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) (2008, Chulyanon Siriphol) and OM (INDIRECT) (2008, Somchai Wachirajongkol).
DANGER NEARBY and INDIRECT are unofficial English titles of these two films. I don’t know the official English titles of these films, so I translate the titles of these films from Thai. The Thai title of DANGER NEARBY is “PAI GLAI TUA”, while the Thai title of INDIRECT is “OM”.
DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) is about a horror film made by a university student. What I love about this film is that Chulyanon superimposes “the written script” and “the film professors’ harsh comments on the film” onto the horror film. This gives me a new kind of experience, because while I was watching this film, I experienced the three interesting conflicts at the same time. They are:
1.The conflicts between the characters in the horror film
2.The conflicts between the film professors and the horror film
3.The conflicts between my own opinions and the film professors’ opinions
Most films give me just the first level of conflict. I can’t recall if I have ever experienced these three simultaneous conflicts at the same time from any other films or not. It is like watching a DVD with an extremely unfair commentary on the film.
The written script superimposed on the horror film in DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) reminds me of a building—THE CENTRE POMPIDOU in Paris, because this film lays bare its own structure while the story progresses, like this building which lays bare its own structure.

Another thing that I love very much in DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) is the fact that it seems to show the problems of some film teaching in Thailand. Depending on each viewer’s opinion, the comments on the horror film in DANGER NEARBY may seem either fair or unfair. In my own opinion, the comments seem unfair. It seems as if someone says that Eric Rohmer’s films are bad because they rely on dialogue. However, I have to say that I have never studied film and I have never taken a film course in my entire life. Maybe what the professors said is good and correct, and my opinions are wrong because I know nothing about films and film theories, but I’d rather see all the bad films that violate these professors’ good rules of filmmaking than see good films which conform to the rules of these professors.
Fortunately, every film professor is different from one another. I know that some Thai film professors are great and very open-minded, though several professors seem to regard films as if they are mere industrial products and must conform to some formulas.
OM (INDIRECT) is a mockumentary. It is about a male university student who secretly has a crush on his female friend. He tries to use a video camera to secretly record the activities of this girl. There are at least three scenes which I love in OM:
1.The scene when the guy tries to confess his love. He tells his friend to hold the camera and record this confessing moment while he approaches the girl, but his friend doesn’t know how to use the camera, so we can see only extremely blurred images in this important moment.
2.The scene when the guy tries to confess his love again. He tells his friend to do that again, but his friend uses the camera to record other pretty girls who keep walking by instead of recording the love confessing moment.
3.The guy decides that he will confess his love in an indirect way by compiling all these footages which we just saw and making a documentary which we just saw. He shows this documentary to the girl and records the reaction of the girl while the documentary shows her the truth that he secretly loves her. I love the reaction of the girl in this scene very much. It made me believe for a while that what I was seeing is a real documentary.
Because of DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) and OM (INDIRECT), I decided to make a list of my favorite films, stage play, music video, and TV series which I think should be compared to one another. Some of these films may be self-reflexive. Some of them may present interesting levels of storytelling. Some of them may not fall into these two categories, but I just include them in the list, because I think they should be compared to one another.

I like what Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote about this film in the book ESSENTIAL CINEMA very much. He wrote, “Indeed, it might be argued that Godard fails as a storyteller, as an entertainer, as an essayist, and as a film critic in the very process of succeeding as an artist.”
I also knew from Rosenbaum’s writing that Susan Sontag is one of very few American critics who liked CONTEMPT when it was first shown. Rosenbaum wrote, “I was shocked to hear (Susan Sontag) say that she’d been to see CONTEMPT four or five times already. It was the first time I’d heard someone refer to the film as anything but a mess and an embarrassment, and I decided that maybe it deserved another look.”

The video shows three women walking back and forth in a market, smiling and observing the market. One of the women has injured neck, so she puts on some medical equipment to support her neck while she is walking around. I’m not sure if the project was organized by Volker Schreiner or not.

ถ้าจำไม่ผิด หนังเรื่อง “โลกพอเพียง” ของคุณมนิตย์ สนับแน่น เป็นเรื่องของหญิงสาวที่เจอตุ๊กตาตัวเล็กๆที่หัวเป็นลูกโลกตกอยู่ข้างถนน เธอเลยใช้ตะเกียบคีบมันขึ้นมา เอามันกลับมาแช่ตู้เย็นที่บ้าน แต่เธอก็ฝันร้าย ว่าตุ๊กตาถูกเพลิงเผาทำลายหรืออะไรทำนองนี้ เธอเอาตุ๊กตาไปหาหมอที่คลินิก ให้หมอรักษา แต่ก็ดูเหมือนจะรักษาไม่สำเร็จ ในที่สุดเธอก็เลยเอาตุ๊กตาหัวลูกโลกไปวางไว้บนต้นไม้ใหญ่ที่ดูร่มรื่น หนังเรื่องนี้แทบไม่มีบทสนทนาเลย
ถ้าจำไม่ผิด หนังเรื่อง GMO SUPERSAFE ของคุณวีรยุทธ กระจ่างศรี เป็นเรื่องของเด็กหนุ่มที่วิ่งไปในสวนสาธารณะ แล้วเขาก็โยนขวดน้ำลงข้างทาง แต่ดูเหมือนเขาจะสำนึกผิดขึ้นมาอย่างฉับพลัน เขาก็เลยพุ่งถลาลอยลมไปเพื่อพยายามจะรับขวดน้ำนั้นให้ได้กลางอากาศก่อนที่ขวดน้ำจะตกถึงพื้น แต่ดิฉันไม่แน่ใจว่าขวดน้ำนั้นกลายร่างเป็นลูกโลกด้วยหรือเปล่า
ส่วนหนังเรื่อง I SCREAM นั้นชอบมากๆ แต่ขอสารภาพว่าคิดตามไม่ทัน ดูจบแล้วยังงงๆว่าตกลงฆาตกรมันมีหนึ่งหรือสามคน ฟังที่ตัวละครพูดตอนท้ายไม่ทัน ก็เลยงงๆว่าตกลงแล้วที่จริงมันเป็นอย่างไรกันแน่ระหว่างสองกรณีนี้
1.ฆาตกรมีคนเดียว
2.ฆาตกรมี 3 คน โดยฆาตกรคนที่หนึ่งคือเหยื่อรายที่สอง และฆาตกรคนที่สองคือเหยื่อรายที่สาม และฆาตกรคนที่สามเป็นคนวางแผน แต่คิดว่ากรณีนี้ไม่น่าจะใช่ เพราะงงๆกับแรงจูงใจของฆาตกรคนที่หนึ่งและสอง และงงๆว่าทำไมฆาตกรคนที่หนึ่งและสองต้องแต่งตัวเหมือนกันตอนออกปฏิบัติการ แต่คิดว่าถ้าหากฆาตกรมีสามคนจริงๆ หนังเรื่องนี้ก็คงจะเปรี้ยวมาก

เมื่อเร็วๆนี้อยู่ดีๆพี่ก็ฝันว่าเจอนักกีฬาหนุ่มรูปร่างกำยำจากจังหวัดกาฬสินธ์ ตื่นมาแล้วก็งงมาก ว่าอยู่ดีๆฝันถึงเรื่องดีๆแบบนี้ได้ยังไง เพราะคำว่าจังหวัดกาฬสินธ์เป็นคำที่ไม่เคยอยู่ในหัวพี่มาก่อนเลย ไม่รู้ว่าเป็นเพราะพี่ได้รับเชื้อ “ฝันดีน่าตบ” มาจากน้อง ZM หรือเปล่า แต่พอเจอประสบการณ์ฝันประหลาดๆแบบนี้เข้ากับตัวเอง ก็เลยทำให้นึกถึงน้อง ZM ขึ้นมาเป็นคนแรก
เพิ่งไปดูเทศกาลหนังสั้นมา เจอหนังสั้นที่ชอบหลายเรื่องมาก ซึ่งรวมถึงหนังสั้นเรื่อง MOFO LIFE SIZE DOLL ที่มีฉากผู้ชายข่มขืนผู้ชายเป็นเวลายาวนาน และหนังสั้นเรื่อง CEREBRUM ที่มีตัวละครเอกตัวนึงเป็นเกย์ (ถ้าเข้าใจไม่ผิด)

อย่างไรก็ตามทีมงานประชาไทตระหนักดีว่า เราจำเป็นที่จะต้องแสวงหาทางเลือกและที่มาของรายได้ ที่จะช่วยให้ประชาไททำงานต่อไปได้ มากกว่าจะพึ่งพิงเงินทุนสนับสนุนโครงการเพียงอย่างเดียวตลอดไป เพราะถ้าเป็นเช่นนั้นคงยากที่ประชาไทจะอยู่รอดได้จริง
แล้วเวลาที่ทีมประชาไทหวั่นกลัวก็มาถึงแล้วจริงๆ ตอนนี้ประชาไทกำลังประสบปัญหาขาดแคลนงบประมาณในการดำเนินงาน อันเนื่องมาจากการเสนอโครงการขอทุนมาทำงานไม่เพียงพอต่อค่าใช้จ่ายที่เกิดขึ้นจริง ที่สุดของวิกฤติคือประชาไทไม่มีเงินทุนดำเนินงานในระยะสั้นระหว่างเดือน ก.ค.-ก.ย. 51
ในแต่ละเดือนประชาไทใช้เงินดำเนินงานประมาณ 4 แสนบาท โดย 2 แสนเป็นเงินเดือนของพนักงานประจำซึ่งทั้งหมดทั้งมวลที่มีคือ 13 คน และอีกราว 2 แสนเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายในส่วนอื่นๆที่เหลือ อาทิ ค่าเช่าสำนักงาน, ค่าสาธารณูปโภค, ค่าเดินทาง, ค่าติดต่อประสานงาน และค่าตอบแทนข่าว/บทความ ที่ส่งมาจากบุคคลภายนอก และอื่นๆ

อย่างไรก็ตามทีมงานประชาไทตระหนักดีว่า เราจำเป็นที่จะต้องแสวงหาทางเลือกและที่มาของรายได้ ที่จะช่วยให้ประชาไททำงานต่อไปได้ มากกว่าจะพึ่งพิงเงินทุนสนับสนุนโครงการเพียงอย่างเดียวตลอดไป เพราะถ้าเป็นเช่นนั้นคงยากที่ประชาไทจะอยู่รอดได้จริง
แล้วเวลาที่ทีมประชาไทหวั่นกลัวก็มาถึงแล้วจริงๆ ตอนนี้ประชาไทกำลังประสบปัญหาขาดแคลนงบประมาณในการดำเนินงาน อันเนื่องมาจากการเสนอโครงการขอทุนมาทำงานไม่เพียงพอต่อค่าใช้จ่ายที่เกิดขึ้นจริง ที่สุดของวิกฤติคือประชาไทไม่มีเงินทุนดำเนินงานในระยะสั้นระหว่างเดือน ก.ค.-ก.ย. 51
ในแต่ละเดือนประชาไทใช้เงินดำเนินงานประมาณ 4 แสนบาท โดย 2 แสนเป็นเงินเดือนของพนักงานประจำซึ่งทั้งหมดทั้งมวลที่มีคือ 13 คน และอีกราว 2 แสนเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายในส่วนอื่นๆที่เหลือ อาทิ ค่าเช่าสำนักงาน, ค่าสาธารณูปโภค, ค่าเดินทาง, ค่าติดต่อประสานงาน และค่าตอบแทนข่าว/บทความ ที่ส่งมาจากบุคคลภายนอก และอื่นๆ
ด้วยภาวะวิกฤติเช่นนี้ประชาไทจึงจำเป็น ที่จะต้องประกาศขอรับความช่วยเหลือและสนับสนุนจากผู้อ่าน/เพื่อนสมาชิก ที่เห็นว่าสื่อเล็กๆ อย่างประชาไทมีคุณค่าพอที่จะให้ยังมีอยู่ในสังคมไทย

The Thai Short Film Festival 2008 has started. I enjoyed the films in the first weekend a lot. There are two new filmmakers who shock me with their two films. I love their films very much, but before I mention their names, I just want to mention some other Thai short filmmakers or some Thai short films I love during the past 12 years.

DON’T EVER TOUCH MY BAG! (Surachai + Manorom)
I don’t know the surnames of these two directors, who were students in Chulalongkorn University when they made these films. I haven’t heard from them again. This film was not shown in the Thai Short Film Festival, but was shown in the Student Film Festival in 1997.

I wasted a lot of time trying to search for the brochure of the Second Thai Short Film Festival in my extremely untidy room, but I still can’t find the brochure. Because I don’t have the brochure with me now, I don’t know the name of the director of this film. If anyone knows it, please tell me. This film is a documentary which recorded daily events in Siam Square (if I remember it correctly).

I don’t know the surnames of these two directors, who were students in Chulalongkorn University when they made these films. I haven’t heard from them again. This film was not shown in the Thai Short Film Festival, but was shown in the Student Film Festival in 1997.

I wasted a lot of time trying to search for the brochure of the Second Thai Short Film Festival in my extremely untidy room, but I still can’t find the brochure. Because I don’t have the brochure with me now, I don’t know the name of the director of this film. If anyone knows it, please tell me. This film is a documentary which recorded daily events in Siam Square (if I remember it correctly).

THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS reminds me of some films about psychotic killers which are different from normal horror films. They include WOLF CREEK, SOMBRE (Philippe Grandrieux), LE BOUCHER (Claude Chabrol), THE DEAD GIRL (2006, Karen Moncrieff) and DEATHPROOF (Quentin Tarantino).
ชอบ THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS มากๆ โดยเฉพาะตอนจบ ดีใจมากที่คุณโอลิเวอร์เขียนถึงหนังเรื่องนี้
เห็นมีหนังสือ SCHRADER ON SCHRADER วางขายอยู่ในร้าน Shaman ที่ถนนข้าวสารด้วย แต่ก็ไม่ได้ซื้อมา เพราะถึงแม้จะชอบหนังของพอล ชเรเดอร์มากพอสมควร แต่ก็ยังไม่รู้สึกว่าเขาเป็นผู้กำกับที่มีอะไรน่าค้นหามากนัก
คิดไปคิดมาแล้วก็รู้สึกว่า THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS มีลักษณะ slow burning ที่ทำให้นึกถึงหนังของ Claude Chabrol อยู่บ้างเหมือนกัน นอกจากนี้ THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS ก็อาจจะเรียกได้ว่าเป็นหนังฆาตกรโรคจิตที่ไม่ได้ใช้โครงสร้างการเล่าเรื่องแบบหนังสยองขวัญ-ฆาตกรโรคจิตโดยทั่วไป เพราะหนังเรื่องนี้เน้นไปที่บรรยากาศและอะไรอื่นๆ ไม่ได้เน้นการลุ้นระทึกว่าตัวละครจะถูกฆ่าหรือจะหนีรอดหรือไม่ จุดนี้ทำให้รู้สึกว่า THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS ไปไกลกว่า WOLF CREEK เสียอีก

WHO SHOULD DIRECT "NATHALIE GRANGER 2"?: AKERMAN, DENIS, MENKES, OR ARIYAVICHA?

เราชอบ RIVALS (2008, Jacques Maillot, A+/A) มากๆเลยล่ะ แต่พอได้ยินว่าน้อง merveillesxx ไม่ชอบเรื่องนี้ ก็เลยทำให้นึกขึ้นมาได้ว่าน้องก็ไม่ชอบ THE DEPARTED (2006, Martin Scorsese, A+/A) เหมือนกัน
โดยส่วนตัวแล้ว เราชอบ RIVALS เพราะเรารู้สึกว่ามันดู “คลาสสิค” ดี ดูแล้วนึกถึงหนังยุค 1970 หรือหนังอย่าง LOULOU (1980, Maurice Pialat, A+) อีกสามสาเหตุที่ทำให้ชอบ RIVALS มากๆก็คือ
1.ตอนจบ
2.การที่หนังเรื่องนี้แทบไม่มีฉากแอคชันเลยแม้แต่นิดเดียว ทั้งๆที่เป็นเรื่องของตำรวจกับอาชญากร
3.เราอินกับการตัดสินใจที่ยากลำบากของตัวละครในเรื่อง เพราะในหลายๆสถานการณ์ เราก็รู้สึกลังเลเหมือนตัวละครว่าเราจะเลือกเส้นทางไหนดี
สรุปว่า ถ้าหากเทียบกับหนังตำรวจด้วยกันแล้ว เราชอบ RIVALS มากกว่า 36 QUAI DES ORFEVRES (2004, Olivier Marchal, A) แต่ชอบน้อยกว่า LE PETIT LIEUTENANT (2005, Xavier Beauvois, A+)

MIND-PURIFYING FILMS
Some films can heal my mind, at least temporarily, briefly. Is this can be called a film therapy?
There’s one scene in SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY in which a doctor tries to cure some illness by making the patient imagine beautiful scenery. This scene can be viewed here:

Though the cure in that scene is not successful, it reminds me of the unhappiness in my mind which sometimes seem to be lessened unexpectedly when I saw some films.
Sometimes I feel unhappy, unfulfilled, sad, sorrowful, depressed, worried, frustrated, painful, or hurt for some particular reasons, or sometimes without obvious reasons. However, some films seem to have the magical potential to purify my mind or my thought for a while. It seems like there are dark clouds in my head or in my heart, but these films can chase the clouds away temporarily.
The films which have that kind of effect on me include:
1.LIFE IS SHORT 2 (2006, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Thailand)
2.PISCINE (2002, Jean-Baptiste Bruant + Maria Spangaro)
3.FACES IN THE FLOWERS (2008, Jennifer MacMillan)

The reason why I wrote this post is because I just saw FACES IN THE FLOWERS. I really love the innocence in the eyes of the children in the film, though I have to confess that it makes me feel great and sad at the same time. I feel great because the innocent eyes seem like something coming from heaven, or they make the earth seem like heaven, or they are connected to a pure mind, or a beautiful heart of a child. It makes me feel sad because it reminds me that my eyes can never be like these again. When we lose our innocence, we may lose it forever. Some of us may still possess a little bit of innocence inside, though.
I believe that my mind is irretrievably darkened, these films, though, feel like pure water cleansing my mind and make it look temporarily grayer.
Thanks to the filmmakers for making these mind-purifying films, though that may not be the filmmakers’ intention in the first place. :-)

My poll 25 is inspired by one of my most favorite films of 2008 – MY BROTHER’S SUMMER (2005, Pietro Reggiani, Italy, A++++++++++), which I just saw in the Italian Film Festival. I’m not sure if the film is aesthetically great or not, but I’m sure that it touches me deeply, because some parts of the film really reminds me of my own childhood. The protagonist of this film spends most of his time with imaginary people. This reminds me of the time when I was a child. I liked to imagine a lot of stories at that time. I liked talking to dolls and treated them as if they were real human beings. More importantly, MY BROTHER’S SUMMER has a great ending, an ending which is very true to me.
Because of MY BROTHER’S SUMMER, I decided to make a list of my favorite films about little boys. But there seem to be so many films I like about this topic, especially French, British, Japanese, American, and Iranian films. So I decided to choose only one film from each country for this list. I’m not sure why no Iranian films show up in my final list. Maybe I haven’t watched enough Kiarostami’s films.

I like the relationships in this film very much. The boy here gets along very well with his stepfather. Somehow I don’t like films which show the antagonism between stepfather+stepmother vs. stepson+stepdaughter. I prefer films in which they love one another, such as in this film. If I don’t remember it wrongly, CLUELESS (1995, Amy Heckerling) also has a stepson character (Paul Rudd), who gets along well with his stepdad.

--I choose THE WAR here, because it made me cry. I particularly like this sentence in the film:
“War is like a big machine that no one really knows how to run and when it gets out of control it ends up destroying the things you thought you were fighting for, and a lot of other things you kinda forgot you had.”

In the Slovenian Film Series, I saw only SPARE PARTS (2003, Damjan Kozole) and recommend it. It deals with the illegal immigration issue in an unsentimental way. I much prefer it to films like DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (2002, Stephen Frears). I think SPARE PARTS may make a good unintentional trilogy with THE PROMISE (1996, Jean Pierre + Luc Dardenne) and ONCE YOU’RE BORN YOU CAN NO LONGER HIDE (2005, Marco Tullio Giordana), which also deal with the same issue, but from different perspectives.

--พูดถึงการอัดรายการวิทยุแล้ว ก็เลยนึกถึงกิจกรรมของตัวเองในตอนนี้ ซึ่งก็คือการทยอยเอาเทปเก่าๆที่อัดรายการวิทยุเมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน โยนทิ้งไป เพราะตอนนี้อพาร์ทเมนท์ของดิฉันแทบไม่มีที่ว่างเหลืออยู่แล้ว ก็เลยตัดสินใจเอาเทปเก่าๆที่อัดรายการวิทยุของ DJ POP กับเพลงญี่ปุ่นของ DJ EDDY และเพลงของดีเจคนอื่นๆบางคนมาฟังเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย ก่อนจะโยนทิ้งไป รู้สึกเสียดายอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่ก็ต้องจำใจทำ ไม่งั้นก็คงไม่มีที่ว่างเหลือไว้สำหรับเก็บนิตยสาร I AM GUY, REAL, VZMEN, STEPS, NEED, SHAKE ที่ทยอยซื้อเข้าห้องมาเรื่อยๆ

ยังไม่เคยดู JOSEF KILIAN (1963, Pavel Juracek, Jan Schmidt) เลยค่ะ แต่มั่นใจว่าหนังต้องน่าดูมากๆแน่ๆ เคยดูหนังของ Pavel Juracek เรื่องเดียว ซึ่งก็คือเรื่อง CASE FOR A ROOKIE HANGMAN (1970, A++++++++++) ที่เคยมาฉายใน World Film Festival of Bangkok จำได้ว่าคุณ FILMSICK ก็ได้ดูหนังเรื่องนี้ด้วย เป็นหนังที่เฮี้ยนสุดๆ นึกว่า ALICE IN WONDERLAND + GULLIVER’S TRAVELS + FRANZ KAFKA ดูแล้วก็ไม่เข้าใจเหมือนกันว่าหนังสื่อถึงความหมายทางการเมืองในช่วงนั้นอย่างไรบ้าง แต่ก็เป็นหนังที่สนุกมากๆ
