WEERASAK SUYALA'S FILMOGRAPHY

My writing below is inspired by Filmsick’s love for Weerasak Suyala’s film:

Filmsick and I are very much impressed by the film KUEN PLEAW NAI SOI TRUAD (LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY) (2008, Weerasak Suyala, 15 min, A+++++), which we just saw on Saturday, July 12. I think it is very low-budget, very do-it-yourself, very anti-realistic, extremely hilarious. I think of it as a part of an unintentional trilogy which include WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007, James Gray, A) and RIVALS (2008, Jacques Maillot, A+/A). I saw these three films within the space of a month, and each of these three films features a pair of brothers—one is a criminal or belongs to the criminal world, the other is a good cop. Aesthetically, WE OWN THE NIGHT might be the best, and LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY might be the worst. But judging from my own pleasure, I like LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY the most. Maybe it is because this time I care for the kind of story I feel involved in, instead of caring for the aesthetics which I know nothing about. LONELY NIGHT IN TRUAD ALLEY presents a character who cares for virtue more than family. RIVALS also presents a character who sometimes care for virtue more than family. On the other hand, WE OWN THE NIGHT presents a character who stands up against the mafia, because the mafia hurt his family. Well, I have to confess that I have not much interest in this kind of character, though the film is extremely well-made. I would have cared very much for WE OWN THE NIGHT if it is about a guy who was born into a mafia family, but he decides to destroy his own family, because he cares for virtue. That’s the kind of character I love.

I tried to find information about Weerasak Suyala from the internet and from the brochures of the Thai Short Film Festival in the past. If I understand it correctly, Weerasak is a policeman who lives in Ubon Ratchatani, a northeastern province of Thailand. This policeman has directed short films since 2002. He also won an award in the Thai Short Film Festival in 2003. He is also an amateur writer and won an award for his writing, too. You can find some information about his literary prize in Thai here:

POLL 26: SELF-REFLEXIVE

POLL 26: PROBABLY SELF-REFLEXIVE OR STORYTELLING-CONCERNED

My poll 26 is inspired by two new Thai short films I love—DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) (2008, Chulyanon Siriphol) and OM (INDIRECT) (2008, Somchai Wachirajongkol).

DANGER NEARBY and INDIRECT are unofficial English titles of these two films. I don’t know the official English titles of these films, so I translate the titles of these films from Thai. The Thai title of DANGER NEARBY is “PAI GLAI TUA”, while the Thai title of INDIRECT is “OM”.

DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) is about a horror film made by a university student. What I love about this film is that Chulyanon superimposes “the written script” and “the film professors’ harsh comments on the film” onto the horror film. This gives me a new kind of experience, because while I was watching this film, I experienced the three interesting conflicts at the same time. They are:

1.The conflicts between the characters in the horror film

2.The conflicts between the film professors and the horror film

3.The conflicts between my own opinions and the film professors’ opinions

Most films give me just the first level of conflict. I can’t recall if I have ever experienced these three simultaneous conflicts at the same time from any other films or not. It is like watching a DVD with an extremely unfair commentary on the film.

The written script superimposed on the horror film in DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) reminds me of a building—THE CENTRE POMPIDOU in Paris, because this film lays bare its own structure while the story progresses, like this building which lays bare its own structure.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3104/2655204467_bedb093083_o.jpg

Another thing that I love very much in DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) is the fact that it seems to show the problems of some film teaching in Thailand. Depending on each viewer’s opinion, the comments on the horror film in DANGER NEARBY may seem either fair or unfair. In my own opinion, the comments seem unfair. It seems as if someone says that Eric Rohmer’s films are bad because they rely on dialogue. However, I have to say that I have never studied film and I have never taken a film course in my entire life. Maybe what the professors said is good and correct, and my opinions are wrong because I know nothing about films and film theories, but I’d rather see all the bad films that violate these professors’ good rules of filmmaking than see good films which conform to the rules of these professors.

Fortunately, every film professor is different from one another. I know that some Thai film professors are great and very open-minded, though several professors seem to regard films as if they are mere industrial products and must conform to some formulas.

OM (INDIRECT) is a mockumentary. It is about a male university student who secretly has a crush on his female friend. He tries to use a video camera to secretly record the activities of this girl. There are at least three scenes which I love in OM:

1.The scene when the guy tries to confess his love. He tells his friend to hold the camera and record this confessing moment while he approaches the girl, but his friend doesn’t know how to use the camera, so we can see only extremely blurred images in this important moment.

2.The scene when the guy tries to confess his love again. He tells his friend to do that again, but his friend uses the camera to record other pretty girls who keep walking by instead of recording the love confessing moment.

3.The guy decides that he will confess his love in an indirect way by compiling all these footages which we just saw and making a documentary which we just saw. He shows this documentary to the girl and records the reaction of the girl while the documentary shows her the truth that he secretly loves her. I love the reaction of the girl in this scene very much. It made me believe for a while that what I was seeing is a real documentary.

Because of DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) and OM (INDIRECT), I decided to make a list of my favorite films, stage play, music video, and TV series which I think should be compared to one another. Some of these films may be self-reflexive. Some of them may present interesting levels of storytelling. Some of them may not fall into these two categories, but I just include them in the list, because I think they should be compared to one another.

THESE GREAT FILMS/PLAY MAY BE SELF-REFLEXIVE OR STORYTELLING-CONCERNED. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.ADAPTATION (2002, Spike Jonze, USA)

2.BACHELORETTE (Michel Gondry, a music video of Bjork)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5nNfbTS6N4

3.CLOSE-UP (1989, Abbas Kiarostami, Iran)

4.CONTEMPT (1963, Jean-Luc Godard, France)

I like what Jonathan Rosenbaum wrote about this film in the book ESSENTIAL CINEMA very much. He wrote, “Indeed, it might be argued that Godard fails as a storyteller, as an entertainer, as an essayist, and as a film critic in the very process of succeeding as an artist.”

I also knew from Rosenbaum’s writing that Susan Sontag is one of very few American critics who liked CONTEMPT when it was first shown. Rosenbaum wrote, “I was shocked to hear (Susan Sontag) say that she’d been to see CONTEMPT four or five times already. It was the first time I’d heard someone refer to the film as anything but a mess and an embarrassment, and I decided that maybe it deserved another look.”

5.DANGER NEARBY (DIRECTOR’S CUT) (2008, Chulyanon Siriphol, Thailand)

6.DRAMA, STRINGS AND HORNS (1998, Gunter Krueger, Germany)

7.EDEN AND AFTER (1970, Alain Robbe-Grillet, France)

8.HAUNTED HOUSES (2001, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand)

9.I MOVE, SO I AM (1997, Gerrit Van Dijk, Netherlands)
http://www.gerrit-van-dijk.nl/
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/126/378417122_d8f59b2659_o.jpg

Synopsis of this film from a website:
”In the beginning there was a hand, and this hand drew other hands, then shoulders, heads, legs and finally, the animator himself. Inspired by a wide range of works of art and styles of illustration, this is a film which is constantly reinventing itself in one continual motion - after all, to draw a "still life" would be like creating an image without life.”

10.MAI PEN RUENG (2006, Pachruja Kanjanakosol, Thai play)

11.MURDER BY DEATH (1976, Robert Moore, USA)

12.OM (INDIRECT) (2008, Somchai Wachirajongkol, Thailand)

13.OPEN REEL (1976, Dalibor Martinis, Croatia, black and white, 4 min)
http://www.dalibormartinis.com/

This is the description of the film in the brochure of the Third Bangkok Experimental Film Festival:

“A self-referencing video in which the artist wraps his face in the videotape as it emerges from the camera, which is recording him doing this. A camera on a tripod is connected with a video recorder. The artist is sitting in front of the camera. After starting the recorder, he gathers up the videotape uncoiling from the first reel and passing through the magnetic head, and instead of coiling in on the second reel he winds it around his head, turning around in his chair. In the end his face is completely swathed in video-tape on which his face is recorded over which is coiled the video tape. ”

14.THE OPPOSITE OF SEX (1998, Don Roos, USA)

15.A PLACE AMONG THE LIVING (2003, Raoul Ruiz, France)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408295/

16.THE POSITIVELY TRUE ADVENTURES OF THE ALLEGED TEXAS CHEERLEADER-MURDERING MOM (1993, Michael Ritchie, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107861/

17.SOMETHING HAPPENED (2007, Keren Cytter, Germany)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X6XHYi44FE

18.STORYTELLING (2001, Todd Solondz, USA)

19.TRISTAM SHANDY: A COCK AND BULL STORY (2005, Michael Winterbottom, UK)

20.TWILIGHT ZONE TV SERIES: EPISODE “PERSONAL DEMONS” (1986, Peter Medak, USA)

This episode is about Rock S. O’Bannon, a writer who is haunted by some demons. He can get rid of these demons only by writing about them. This episode is written by the real Rock S. O’Bannon.

You can cast multiple votes.

I exclude these films from the list, partly because they are famous:

1.ANGUISH (1987, Bigas Luna, Spain)

2.CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING

3.FUNNY GAMES (1997, Michael Haneke, Austria)

4.MARLENE (1984, Maximilian Schell, West Germany)

5.THE PLAYER (1992, Robert Altman)

6.RUN LOLA RUN

7.SCREAM

CEREBRUM (2008, Alwa Ritsila + Komvish Zally, A+++++++++++++++)

The Thai Short Film Festival 2008 has started. I enjoyed the films in the first weekend a lot. There are two new filmmakers who shock me with their two films. I love their films very much, but before I mention their names, I just want to mention some other Thai short filmmakers or some Thai short films I love during the past 12 years.

1997
DON’T EVER TOUCH MY BAG! (Surachai + Manorom)
I don’t know the surnames of these two directors, who were students in Chulalongkorn University when they made these films. I haven’t heard from them again. This film was not shown in the Thai Short Film Festival, but was shown in the Student Film Festival in 1997.

1998
SIAM SQUARE (22 min)

I wasted a lot of time trying to search for the brochure of the Second Thai Short Film Festival in my extremely untidy room, but I still can’t find the brochure. Because I don’t have the brochure with me now, I don’t know the name of the director of this film. If anyone knows it, please tell me. This film is a documentary which recorded daily events in Siam Square (if I remember it correctly).

1999
WINDOWS (Apichatpong Weerasethakul)

2000
KAL (TIME) (Uruphong Raksasad)

2001
ROUGH NIGHT (Samart Imkham)
Many films by Manussak Dokmai

2002
LIVING ON SUNDAY (Suparirk Kanitwaranun, 17 min)

2003
UOD DEE (ARROGANT) (Sompot Chidgasornpongse)

2004
BUS STOP (Tosaporn Mongkol)

2005
Many films by Tossapol Boonsinsukh

2006
SPECTRE: 16 YEARS LATER (Prap Boonpan)

2007
Some films by Tulapop Saenjaroen and by Attapon Pamakho

2008
Films by Alwa Ritsila + Komvish Zally

Fortunately, they posted their two films on Youtube. So if you know you share the same cinematic taste as me, watch these two films now. I will not describe them. See them for yourself.

10.THING WITH NO NAME (2008, Sarah Friedland, USA/South Africa)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1243230/

“Thing With No Name, a feature-length documentary, provides an unprecedented, intimate glimpse into the traditional life of a rapidly changing culture. Set in Okhahlamba, South Africa, a stunning, mountainous Zulu area and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the story follows Danisile and Ntombeleni, two women with full-blown AIDS as they attempt to access recently introduced antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through the public sector. Danisile responds well to the medications, with the support of her family and her volunteer nurse. Ntombeleni does not respond as positively, experiencing the delirium and difficult side effects that are a strong source of controversy within the Zulu culture. The universal aspects of motherhood and the struggle to survive are explored through the womens' lives: Danisile's strained relationship with her teenage daughter, who secretly fears becoming one of South Africa's 1.2 million AIDS orphans, and the traditional Zulu ceremonies that Ntombeleni's family holds to combat her illness in their own way. Illustrating the bittersweet reality of the situation, through both the miracle of survival and the tragedy of falling victim to an overwhelmed medical system, Thing With No Name reveals the private and public obstacles that have led to an out of control epidemic.”

B.BOOK WISH LIST

1.FRAMES (2008, Loren D. Estleman)

I knew about this novel from Peter Nellhaus’ blog:
http://www.coffeecoffeeandmorecoffee.com/archives/2008/06/frames.html

This is the synopsis from www.amazon.com

“Having appeared in 10 short stories in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, self-described film detective Valentino, who works as a film archivist at U.C.L.A., makes his novel-length debut in the engaging first of a new series from Shamus-winner Estleman. Valentino stumbles on the find of a lifetime when he inspects the Oracle, a decaying 1920s movie theater he's considering purchasing. An abandoned storage room contains reels of film that may be the only surviving prints of Erich von Stroheim's legendary epic, Greed. The further discovery of a skeleton of unknown vintage in the old building complicates matters. Aided by academic colleagues, Valentino tries to eat his cake and have it, too, by cooperating with the police inquiry into what might be a case of foul play without revealing the existence of the film reels, which he fears might be damaged if seized as evidence. While the lighthearted tone is far removed from the gritty realism of the author's Amos Walker series (American Detective, etc.), the versatile Estleman has crafted yet another intelligent page-turner.”

The synopsis of this novel makes me think about

1.1 FLICKER
This is a great novel by Theodore Roszak about films.

1.2 MANO (2005, George Felner, Portugal, A+)
This film is about the preservation of classic films.

C. ART EXHIBITION WISH LIST

David Claerbout’s videos, especially BORDEUX PIECE (2004, 13-hour long)
http://www.artnet.com/artist/4079/david-claerbout.html
http://www.vanabbemuseum.nl/pers/pressphotos/20050531-david-claerbout.htm

This is what Christophe Gallois wrote about Claerbout’s videos in Frieze magazine:
http://www.frieze.com/shows/review/david_claerbout/

“Taking as point of departure an intrigue of betrayal filmed in a modernist house, Bordeaux Piece (2004) first seems to be a conventionally looped short film. After a few sequences, however, the work slowly discloses its content. Though the narrative repeats itself again and again, each successive sequence occurs under a slightly different atmospheric light. Each shot was repeated about seventy times by the actors over the duration of a day, from sunrise to sunset, before being edited to compose a thirteen-hour long video. Slowly, the real subject matter becomes the changing light. The background comes to be the foreground while the plot of the film, its narrative and the characters, rapidly turn into a mere motif.”

D.RETROSPECTIVE WISH LIST

Films directed by John Cook

This is what Olaf Moller wrote about John Cook’s films in Cinema Scope magazine:
http://www.cinema-scope.com/cs27/feat_moller_cook.html

“To truly understand the Austrian fascination/obsession with this ur-typical Canadian realist—imagine a radically vérité-styled mix of Jean-Pierre Lefebvre and Allan King, with a dash of Straub—one needs to understand the “Realism Complex” of Austrian cinephilia.”

You can buy a book about John Cook here:

THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS reminds me of some films about psychotic killers which are different from normal horror films. They include WOLF CREEK, SOMBRE (Philippe Grandrieux), LE BOUCHER (Claude Chabrol), THE DEAD GIRL (2006, Karen Moncrieff) and DEATHPROOF (Quentin Tarantino).

นอกจาก WOLF CREEK และ THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS แล้ว หนังฆาตกรโรคจิตที่แหวกขนบหนังฆาตกรโรคจิตเรื่องอื่นๆ ก็อาจจะรวมถึง SOMBRE (Philippe Grandrieux), LE BOUCHER (Claude Chabrol), THE DEAD GIRL (2006, Karen Moncrieff) และ DEATHPROOF (Quentin Tarantino)

WHO SHOULD DIRECT "NATHALIE GRANGER 2"?: AKERMAN, DENIS, MENKES, OR ARIYAVICHA?

This is my comment in Filmsick’s blog (with a translated paragraph):
http://filmsick.exteen.com/20080702/nathalie-granger-maguerite-duras-1972

Maybe there should be a project for the current filmmakers to make NATHALIE GRANGER 2. It is interesting to imagine how Nathalie is like when she grows up. Maybe Claire Denis, Sasithorn Ariyavicha, Chantal Akerman, and Nina Menkes can imagine unique visions of the adult Nathalie Granger.

ESCAPE FROM POPRAYA 2526 (2007, Paisit Panpruegsachat, A+)

RIVALS (2008, Jacques Maillot, A+/A) THE DEPARTED (2006, Martin Scorsese, A+/A) เหมือนกัน

LE PETIT LIEUTENANT (2005, Xavier Beauvois, A+)

MIND-PURIFYING FILMS

Some films can heal my mind, at least temporarily, briefly. Is this can be called a film therapy?

There’s one scene in SYNDROMES AND A CENTURY in which a doctor tries to cure some illness by making the patient imagine beautiful scenery. This scene can be viewed here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yyKTE8TytA

Though the cure in that scene is not successful, it reminds me of the unhappiness in my mind which sometimes seem to be lessened unexpectedly when I saw some films.

Sometimes I feel unhappy, unfulfilled, sad, sorrowful, depressed, worried, frustrated, painful, or hurt for some particular reasons, or sometimes without obvious reasons. However, some films seem to have the magical potential to purify my mind or my thought for a while. It seems like there are dark clouds in my head or in my heart, but these films can chase the clouds away temporarily.

The films which have that kind of effect on me include:

1.LIFE IS SHORT 2 (2006, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, Thailand)

2.PISCINE (2002, Jean-Baptiste Bruant + Maria Spangaro)

3.FACES IN THE FLOWERS (2008, Jennifer MacMillan)

You can see this film here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=446CT_5JhTo

I knew about this film from Jennifer’s blog:
http://invisiblecinema.typepad.com/

The reason why I wrote this post is because I just saw FACES IN THE FLOWERS. I really love the innocence in the eyes of the children in the film, though I have to confess that it makes me feel great and sad at the same time. I feel great because the innocent eyes seem like something coming from heaven, or they make the earth seem like heaven, or they are connected to a pure mind, or a beautiful heart of a child. It makes me feel sad because it reminds me that my eyes can never be like these again. When we lose our innocence, we may lose it forever. Some of us may still possess a little bit of innocence inside, though.

I believe that my mind is irretrievably darkened, these films, though, feel like pure water cleansing my mind and make it look temporarily grayer.

Thanks to the filmmakers for making these mind-purifying films, though that may not be the filmmakers’ intention in the first place. :-)

POLL 25: BOY'S CHILDHOOD

My poll 25 is inspired by one of my most favorite films of 2008 – MY BROTHER’S SUMMER (2005, Pietro Reggiani, Italy, A++++++++++), which I just saw in the Italian Film Festival. I’m not sure if the film is aesthetically great or not, but I’m sure that it touches me deeply, because some parts of the film really reminds me of my own childhood. The protagonist of this film spends most of his time with imaginary people. This reminds me of the time when I was a child. I liked to imagine a lot of stories at that time. I liked talking to dolls and treated them as if they were real human beings. More importantly, MY BROTHER’S SUMMER has a great ending, an ending which is very true to me.

Because of MY BROTHER’S SUMMER, I decided to make a list of my favorite films about little boys. But there seem to be so many films I like about this topic, especially French, British, Japanese, American, and Iranian films. So I decided to choose only one film from each country for this list. I’m not sure why no Iranian films show up in my final list. Maybe I haven’t watched enough Kiarostami’s films.

I LOVE THESE FILMS ABOUT BOY'S CHILDHOOD. WHICH ONES DO YOU LIKE?

1.ADEUS, PAI (1996, Luis Filipe Rocha, Portugal)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115466/

2.ALPSEE (1995, Matthias Mueller, Germany)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112329/

3.BLINDFOLDED (1999, Matti Ijas, Finland)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0189102/

4.THE BLOSSOMING OF MAXIMO OLIVEROS (2005, Auraeus Solito, Philippines)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0479506/

5.A CHILD IN THE CROWD (1976, Gerard Blain, France)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073839/
I wish I could see this film again. It was shown at Alliance Francaise in Bangkok around 1995-1996.

6.DUCK SEASON (2004, Fernando Eimbcke, Mexico)

7.EARTHCORE (2005, Chookiat Sakvirakul, Thailand)

8.FLOWER IN THE POCKET (2007, Liew Seng Tat, Malaysia)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1119614/

9.IVAN’S CHILDHOOD (1962, Andrei Tarkovsky, Soviet Union)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056111/

10.MUD (1997, Ivaylo Simidchiev, Bulgaria)

11.MUSASHINO HIGH VOLTAGE TOWERS(1997, Naoki Nagao, Japan)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120315/

12.MY BROTHER’S SUMMER (2005, Pietro Reggiani, Italy)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455946/

13.PATHER PANCHALI (1955, Satyajit Ray, India)

14.THE REFLECTING SKIN (1990, Philip Ridley, UK)

15.SOUS-SOL (1996, Pierre Gang, Canada)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117701/

16.SPRING IN MY HOMETOWN (1998, Lee Kwangmo, South Korea)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0156386/

17.TSATSIKI, MUM AND THE POLICEMAN (1999, Ella Lemhagen, Sweden)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0171851/
I like the relationships in this film very much. The boy here gets along very well with his stepfather. Somehow I don’t like films which show the antagonism between stepfather+stepmother vs. stepson+stepdaughter. I prefer films in which they love one another, such as in this film. If I don’t remember it wrongly, CLUELESS (1995, Amy Heckerling) also has a stepson character (Paul Rudd), who gets along well with his stepdad.

18.URANYA (2006 Costas Kapakas, Greece)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0863041/

19.THE WAR (1994, Jon Avnet, USA)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111667/

20.ZAPPA (1983, Bille August, Denmark)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088445/

--I choose THE WAR here, because it made me cry. I particularly like this sentence in the film:

“War is like a big machine that no one really knows how to run and when it gets out of control it ends up destroying the things you thought you were fighting for, and a lot of other things you kinda forgot you had.”

This is my comment in Dan Sallitt’s blog:
http://www.panix.com/~sallitt/blog/

In the Slovenian Film Series, I saw only SPARE PARTS (2003, Damjan Kozole) and recommend it. It deals with the illegal immigration issue in an unsentimental way. I much prefer it to films like DIRTY PRETTY THINGS (2002, Stephen Frears). I think SPARE PARTS may make a good unintentional trilogy with THE PROMISE (1996, Jean Pierre + Luc Dardenne) and ONCE YOU’RE BORN YOU CAN NO LONGER HIDE (2005, Marco Tullio Giordana), which also deal with the same issue, but from different perspectives.

It also makes me think about the film CINDY: THE DOLL IS MINE (2005, Bertrand Bonello) and the conflicting roles of the artist who is both the creator and a part of the created work.

These artists may include:

1.Cindy Sherman

2.Katharina Sieverding

WE'RE ALL ALONE UNDER THE BLANKET

This is my comment in Bioscope webboard:
http://www.bioscopemagazine.com/smf/index.php?topic=1167.0

I just saw UNDER THE BLANKET (2008, Tossapol Boonsinsukh, A+++++). As for now, I can only say that it is unclassifiable or indescribable for me. The more I try to write about it, the more I feel I unfairly “reduce” the film or the images in the film. UNDER THE BLANKET may not arouse my feelings as strongly as his previous films, but it is still as unforgettable as his previous films. Many scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET have a quality that I like very much. They make me feel free or liberated while watching them. That is not what I feel when I watch most films. Many scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET are not enslaved by storytelling, messages, meanings, or obvious connection to the previous or the next scenes. I mean these scenes may actually tell a story, send a message, carry some meanings or symbols, and have connection to other scenes, but they are not as enslaved by these things as scenes in other films. That’s why I feel free or liberated while I watch most scenes in UNDER THE BLANKET.

It may be totally unrelated, but I want to note that after I saw UNDER THE BLANKET on Friday, I went home to sleep and had a dream that I listened to the song WE’RE ALL ALONE and felt very sad. After I woke up, I cried a lot because of the mysterious sadness lingering from the dream. This song is not in the film, but I wonder if UNDER THE BLANKET had some mysterious effect on my subconscious or not. Is my dream unintentionally caused by some feelings I had while I was watching this film? Maybe not.

This is the video clip of Rita Coolidge singing WE’RE ALL ALONE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGC29fn8JFU

This is the lyrics:

Outside the rain begins and it may never end
So cry no more on the shore
A dream will take us out to sea
Forever more forever more

Close your eyes and dream
And and you can be with me
'Neath the waves through the caves of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone
We're all alone

Close the window
Calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin
Learn how to pretend

Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do
Lovers too
So cast your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear
Oh, hold me dear

Close the window
Calm the light
And it will be alright
No need to bother now
Let it out
Let it all begin

All's forgotten now
We're all alone
oh-oh, we're all alone

The post below is inspired by Girish Shambu’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/06/received-ideas-in-cinema.html

Reading Girish’s blog about critical shorthand makes me think about description of some directors. I like how Jean-Luc Godard described some directors very much. Sometimes I don’t understand what he described. Sometimes I don’t agree with what he described. But most of the times I think his descriptions are very memorable or powerful.

I would like to copy some of Godard’s descriptions from the book GODARD ON GODARD, translated and edited by Tom Milne. But instead of copying them directly, I think it would be funnier if I separate the descriptions from the names of the directors. So that my readers who have too much free time may enjoy trying to match them.

Can you match the following Godard’s descriptions with the directors he described?

GODARD’S DESCRIPTIONS

1.An alert (name) is worth two Billy Wilders. …With (name) there is no starting point, and this is precisely his originality. Only the point of arrival matters, a scene at the very limits of absurdity in the ferociously eccentric world of the PAM, PAM, POUM of our childhood.

2.He comes on stage and introduces himself: author, composer, actor, designer, producer, director, scholar, financier, gourmet, ventriloquist, poet.

3.Even as he threw all the great human values to the wolves, he became one of the new great of Hollywood; and even as he replaced Wyler and Zinnemann in the hearts of the exhibitors, he established himself as a worthy heir to Lubitsch in the hearts of cinephiles,…

4.For it is here that his power and talents lie. He seeks the bizarre at all costs, because the bizarre is a convention and behind this convention one must, also at all costs, discover a basic truth. He seeks the madness behind reality because it is for him the only way to rediscover the true face of reality behind this madness. This is why with each close-up one has the feeling that the camera wipes these faces,…

5.The great traditional cinema means (the name of the director) as opposed to Fellini or Rossellini. It is a way of selecting certain scenes rather than others.

6.He is beyond praise because he is the greatest of all. What else can one say? The only film-maker, anyway, to whom one can apply without misunderstanding that very misleading adjective, ‘humane’.

7.He is the second greatest editor in the world after Eisenstein. Editing, to them, means organizing cinematographically; in other words planning dramatically, composing musically, or in yet other words, the finest, film-making.

8.He will also shoot a scene just because at that moment a window is opening in a house away in the background, and a window opening—well, that’s funny. This is what interests him. Everything and nothing. Blades of grass, a kite, children, a little old man, anything, everything which is at once real, bizarre and charming. He has a feeling for comedy because he has a feeling for strangeness.

9.In other words, in all his films and (name of a film) in particular, he tirelessly demonstrates that in order to create cinema we must rediscover Melies, and that quite a few light years are still necessary for this.

10.It is difficult to analyse his comedy style. Pushed in one direction, it would end up as Jacques Tati. Pushed in the other, as Marx Brothers. But as he, one of the laziest of good French directors, never pushes things to their conclusion, one often finds oneself between two stools.

11.I will simply say that, thanks to Henri Langlois, we now know—to choose at random – that ceilings do not date from CITIZEN KANE but from Griffith (of course) and Gance; cinema-verite not from Rouch but (the name of the director);

12.The most subtle film theoretician in France. He hates paradoxes, but creates them. He hates false arguments, but offers them. He hates the cinema, but loves it. He doesn’t like good films, but makes them.

13.His originality lies in having made characters out of his actors – who are actors in the simplest sense of term, moreover, being filmed in action, while he contents himself with filming this action after having, as far as possible, organized it logically in the manner of Rossellini.

14.…proves that he need not abandon the cinema provided he films characters who exist instead of ideas which exist only in the bottom drawers of old scriptwriters who believe that the cinema is the seventh art.

15.Subtlety of mise en scene is here carried to its highest degree. He is probably the only director in the world who dares to make a systematic use of 180 degree shots and reaction shots. But what in another director would be striving for effect, with him is simply a natural movement arising out of the importance he accords to the décor and the position the actors occupy within it.

16.There are several good ways of making French films. Italian style, like Renoir. Viennese, like Ophuls. New Yorker, like Melville. But only (his name) was and is French as France, French as Fontenelle’s rose and Bonnot’s gang.

17.There are several ways of making films. Like Jean Renoir and Robert Bresson, who make music. Like Sergei Eisenstein, who paints. Like (the name of the director), who wrote sound novels in silent days. Like Alain Resnais, who sculpts. And like Socrates, Rossellini I mean, who creates philosophy.

18.There was theatre (Griffith), poetry (Murnau), painting (Rossellini), dance (Eisenstein), music (Renoir). Henceforth there is cinema. And the cinema is (his name).

19.This is why his cinema of non-communication isn’t mine. Rossellini told me that I almost fell into the (his name) error, but just escaped.

20.Thus deprived of consciousness, his camera loses, despite its honesty, the two fundamental qualities of a camera: intelligence and sensitivity.

THE “FAMILY” IS THE SMALLEST CELL OF FASCIST STRUCTURES

I just read an interview with Christian Petzold in the website of Cineaste Magazine. This is a quote from the website:
http://www.cineaste.com/articles/an-interview-with-christian-petzold.htm

“My generation was taught by all these leftist teachers whose consciousness was shaped by the events of 1968. At that time the family was seen to be the smallest cell of the state, of fascist structures, that is, as the biggest piece of shit imaginable. It was the site where discipline and training was implemented. In this context Deleuze's essay on control societies impressed me immensely when I began making films in the mid-90s, just before Deleuze's death. Deleuze argues that the extrafamiliar institutions that cropped up everywhere, those hedonistic communities, the patchwork families, the communes, and the shared apartment-living situations, which were established in direct opposition to the traditional father-mother-child neurosis—that these new forms, which were and are perceived as libratory, actually embody the modern control society, that is, are modern forms of oppression that suddenly exert their force upon people.”

I knew about Cineaste’s website from Girish’s blog:
http://www.girishshambu.com/blog/2008/06/links.html

What Petzold said reminds me of some of my most favorite films last year – CRY IN SILENCE (2006, J. G. Biggs) and MON FILS A MOI (2006, Martial Fougeron) – which deal with tyrannical parents. If I can choose a father, I would choose the father of Juno in JUNO (2007, Jason Reitman, A+). He is a flawed human being, but I think he would cause the least problem in my life. Apart from Juno’s father, I also like the father in THE SUM OF US (1994, Kevin Dowling + Geoff Burton, A-/B+) very much.
